Kevin the Star Striker (The Wild Soccer Bunch, #1) by Joachim Masannek is a book that interested me in a sort of way because it told about a soccer team (the Wild Bunch) who had potential to play the game of soccer and wanted to win all of the time. This book was also very interesting because there many fortunate and unfortunate events happening to the Wild Bunch. For example, an unfortunate event for the Wild Bunch is when the soccer season starts and they figure out that a kid named Mickey the Bulldozer (That's what people call him) and his team, the Unbeatables, who are undefeated, have taken over, and the Wild Bunch decides to challenge them. The author also slipped in some detail throughout the book and it made it a little more interesting. Will the Wild Bunch be able to defeat the Unbeatables and do something no one has ever done before?

I picked this book up, because I saw it got great reviews. My nephew loves soccer so I thought I would read this book to if I thought he would like it. It is a great book for kids. It teaches them that they can stand up to bullies without having to fight. I recommend this book to all ages. Parents, Teachers and famous soccer players have said what a tremendous book this is. Parents read it with your kids. You will absolutely love it.

I read this book in Turkish. It was one of my favourite books growing up, but I'd just like to rant a little about the awful translations of the English version. From what I've understood in the translations the book takes place in Chicago. Which is just wrong. In the original German books they live in Munich. Don't even get me started on the kids' names. They call Leon "Kevin". KEVIN. WHO THE HELL IS KEVIN. HIS NAME IS LEON. I don't even understand why they would feel the need to change the kids' names.

There are a bunch more problems I have with their names, but the main one that triggers me is Deniz. When I read the books for the first time in Turkish; I was really happy that there was a Turkish charecter. However, when I found out that they changed the name for the translations, I was fuming. In the German books he's called "Deniz die Lokomotive" which translates to "Deniz the Locomotive". But the incredibly wonderful folks who translated the books decided to rename him to MAX THE GOLDEN BOOT!!! There was absolutely no reason at all to change his, or the other charecters', nationalities. ALSO WHO APPROVED MAX THE GOLDEN BOOT, LIKE THAT'S SUCH A DUMB NAME.

Amazing book apart from my nitpicking with the translations.

8/10 would reccomend

Nothing means more to the Wild Bunch than soccer. So when the neighborhood bullies decide they, too, want to play soccer during Spring Break, the ultimate challenge is presented. Unfortunately, there are lots of obstacles thrown at the Wild Bunch. Can Larry, the local washed-up, has-been soccer pro, help the boys see who they are and how they can work together to beat the Unbeatables?

This story has the potential to be a great David and Goliath story, and for upper middle school kids, it can be. However, for upper elementary kids (or my 7 and 9 year old boys I bought it for), it doesn’t present positive role models to emulate. The storyline about working through friendship issues and self-doubt through soccer is good, and I liked the overall message. But the kids were sneaky, untruthful, rude, and didn’t care about respecting other people, especially the adults in the book. While that might “appeal” to kids, it is not the kind of character I want my child to identify with until they are older when they have a better understanding of right and wrong.

Big thanks to Socke :D

Kevin, the star striker, grabs your attention immediately with his action packed description of each member of the Wild Bunch. The action continues with down to earth dialogue as we experience their passionate love and devotion to the game of soccer. With the birth of spring, each unique personality must overcome many obstacles just to get to the soccer field.

When they finally manage to get to the field, they find themselves surrounded by Mickey the bulldozer and his gang, the Unbeatables. This older, bigger, and meaner gang has taken over the field.

Kevin explains, “He (Mickey the bulldozer) stomped across the wet field; his every step turned the muddy water into steam. The ground shook. So did his flabby paunch. But underneath all that fat were iron muscles and a black heart.”

Instead of running, the Wild Bunch stands their ground and challenges the Unbeatables to the most important game of their lives. The winner takes back the field.

When they turn to Larry, the alcoholic lemonade guy and ask for help, they are in for a few surprises. The Wild Bunch learns many life lessons about teamwork and perseverance from their new coach. Their struggles and hard work also improve their soccer skills. With some unexpected twists and turns in the story, you’ll wonder until the end if this bunch has the stuff to win.
As a retired teacher, who has taught many reluctant readers, I highly recommend this inspiring book. The fast paced action and gritty dialogue that flows through every chapter will captivate boys everywhere. Readers will find themselves rooting for these average boys who become super heroes by their sheer determination to win.

Meet the Wild Soccer Bunch. They live in Chicago. United by their love of soccer, eleven boys and one girl play by five unbreakable rules:

1) Be Wild.
2) Everything's cool, as long as you're Wild.
3) Never, ever give up.
4) All for one and one for all.
5) Once Wild, always Wild.

When the last of the winter snow melts, the group rushes to their field, only to find that Mickey and his gang, known as the Unbeatables, have taken over. Kevin, determined to have their playing field back, challenges the Unbeatables to a soccer game in two weeks time. Whoever wins gets to keep the soccer field as their playing field.

When problems arise with teamwork, their home situations, and their friendship, their goal of getting their field back seems to get farther and farther away. Can Kevin lead his friends to victory - or will they have to give up their soccer field of dreams forever?

KEVIN THE STAR STRIKER is a fun, quick read for soccer fans everywhere. The characters are likable and easy to relate to. The plot is well-developed and has some serious themes in it, but the story is still funny and enjoyable. Those who like realistic fiction, friendship books, and sports stories will all want to pick up this first book in a new series.

Nota: 8'5

This book is about kids who love to play soccer. Their coach is Larry, but they’re not really an official team; they mostly just play in a field for fun. Fabio, the son of a famous Brazillian soccer star, wants to practice with the Wild Soccer Bunch. Instead, he plays for the Furies and his famous dad won’t let him switch.

The Wild Soccer Bunch finally gets a chance to play the Furies. They have to find a sponsor and logo. The game goes back and forth. The Wild Soccer Bunch eventually looses 11-4. Fabio’s dad is so impressed by the Wild Soccer Bunch’s courage that he hosts a party in their honor and announces that he’ll allow his son to play on their team. He buys them jerseys and helps them get their team going.

I liked this book because it shows that you can face really hard challenges and even if you don’t win, good things can come out of it. The funniest part where when they jumped off the eight foot bridge. My favorite part of the book was when the Wild Soccer Bunch faced the Furies.

The Wild Soccer Bunch is a classic story of a bunch of nine year old soccer lovers. These boys are absolutely crazy for soccer. Spring break is starting and the boys are eager to play… you guessed it-soccer… for two weeks straight.

There are only two problems. First off, half of the team is grounded. This bunch is creative so you know that isn’t going to stop them.

The second problem is Mickey the Bulldozer and his Unbeatables. They’ve decided to take over the soccer field. After some fast talking, the Wild Bunch find themselves in a soccer match with the Unbeatables. Whoever wins gets the field.

One of my favorite books is called The Wild Soccer Bunch. The authors name in this book is Joachim Masannek. In my opinion, it was one of the best books in the world. The book I read was the first book in the series. I recommend this book for my friend because he loves playing sports. One of the main characters loves playing soccer and all of his team tries to beat the Unbeatables. This book is based on a retired soccer player named Landon Donovan. As I have noted The Wild Soccer Bunch is the best book ever.
