Bad Things #2

On the Prowl

Rate this book
Time to embrace your inner evil.

Rose Kinley never intended to be one of the most feared creatures to walk the earth. Once upon a time, she was a human—one who fell in love with a mysterious stranger. But when she got caught in a paranormal war, she lost her humanity and died…only to wake later as a vampire.

Now Rose has a choice. She can continue to try and be the good girl she once was or she can let her darkness out to play. Maybe it’s finally time for her to step into the dark.

He’s the reason she’s undead.

Panther shifter Julian Craig has a mission — protect Rose at all costs. It’s his fault that she lost her human life, and he literally made a deal with the devil so that she would have a second chance as a vampire. And as part of that deal, he’s supposed to keep his hands off Rose. An impossible task considering the dangerous lust he feels for her.

When Rose is targeted by a paranormal collector, Julian knows that he will have to let his own beast out if he is to protect the only woman who ever touched his battered soul. Rose may be afraid of the darkness she carries, but Julian is more than ready to show the world just what kind of a monster he truly is. Julian isn’t afraid of the dark…but the monsters that wait in the shadows? They will bow to him.

He’ll show her just how good it can feel…to be bad.

4 - "You are the nightmare now." Stars!

Cynthia Eden hits the ground running with the second book in her Bad Things series. We met Panther shifter Julian Craig in the first book in the series, and On The Prowl, gives you his story.

As with all of Cynthia’s books, that are a running series, the bigger story is playing out around Julian and Rose’s reconnection. As a couple they have a few challenges to get past as things move along especially after Julian’s initial revelations in the prologue, as well as the life altering accident that causes him to make a decision that turns Rose into something she never actually believed existed beforehand.

"I’m one of the monsters, love."

The battle between dark and light is playing out between Luke Thorne and his brother Leo, as Julian and Rose realize that there is more than one enemy out there, and a game as simple as Simon says… has far more dangerous results and repercussions than they originally expected.

"Even the most powerful beings have weaknesses."

This book almost in a way felt like the author was setting up the series again, with the continuation of the original story, there are also a few introductions of new characters in On The Prowl as well, that look likely to have their own books in the future if the authors note at the end of the book is anything to go by.

As usual, I cannot say much about the actual story line as it would give too much away in relation to the overall plot, but if you are a fan of this author you pretty much know that you are in for a thrill-a-minute, rip roaring adventure, with an alpha male, a sassy heroine and plenty of action along the way. She doesn’t disappoint on any level, and has opened plenty of avenues to explore further in future books.

He was as far from a white knight as it was possible. He was death. He was the monster that she should have feared from the very beginning…

Rayce Lovell, another sexy alpha shifter is up next in, Broken Angel which is due for release in December, he has played quite a big part in the first two books, but we don’t know much about him as yet, so I am looking forward to seeing how his story with Lila plays out.

On The Prowl is book two in the Bad Things series and is Julian and Rose's story. I absolutely loved the first book and I was worried that Julian's story wouldn't be able to compare with Luke and Mina's. I never should have doubted Cynthia Eden. This book was just as good! I loved every minute of it! You can read this book as a standalone but why would you? Start with book one first. You've got all the main characters, except Mina, from book one in book two.

If you haven't read book one yet, this story is about twin brothers, one who rules the light and one who rules the dark. You'd think you would be rooting for the team of light but things aren't as they seem. The author has revealed who the first four books will be about and she is focusing on a member of the dark for each book yet it seems she is also pairing each with one from light. In both books, you'll find that the supposed monsters actually have honor and can feel love. I have my theories on where this series is headed and I can not wait for the rest of the books to publish. I'm loving Cynthia Edens imagination and I can't wait to read what she comes up with next!

“You’re not evil. Screw what others say.” But he hated her fear. Hated it as much as her pain. “You be you, sweets. I’ve got enough evil for us both.”

Rose was changed into a vampire against her will when her boyfriend Julian Craig was attacked by paranormal hunters and she got caught in the crosshairs. She never knew monsters existed until Julian showed her his shifter abilities right before she died and was made into a vampire. Rose never wanted to be a vampire, an evil monster, and she wants nothing to do with the man who took her choice away from her, and so she ran away from him.

Julian is a panther shifter, who knew staying away from Rose was the right thing to do, but he just couldn’t ignore the way she made him feel, and it cost Rose her human life. But Julian couldn’t imagine a world without Rose in it, so he made a deal with the devil, knowing she would hate him.

When Rose becomes the target of a paranormal collector, Julian is intent on protecting Rose, to not let anything happen to her ever again. Because no woman has ever meant to him what she does, and he is monster enough to protect her from all the darkness in their world.

A gentleman would back away.
A devil would hold her tighter.
He knew exactly what he was.

I have liked Julian since the first book, and he was even better in this book. I love how protective and possessive he was over Rose, how much he craved her. And even though what he did was wrong, changing her without her consent, it was still incredibly romantic how much he loved her.

While I loved Julian right from the start, it took a long while for me to like Rose. Now I can understand her being upset with Julian for what he did and not wanting to be a vampire, but her automatic assumption that all paranormal beings were evil was at times upsetting. And while I liked that she didn’t want to hurt anyone, didn’t want to become evil, she did annoy me when her actions caused danger for her and Julian.

It’s been a while since I read the first book, so at first I was a bit confused on the time line, not sure how much times had passed between when Rose was turned and the current present, but once I got into the story the plot was very engaging. I enjoyed seeing Luke again and Julian’s wolf shifter co-worker and friend Rayce Lovell, who is very interesting. I’m looking forward to the next book with him and the angel they saved in this book. Luke’s brother, Leo, is really starting to annoy me, with his holier than thou outlook, and I hope he gets what’s coming to him soon.

I love this author’s books. And although I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the previous one because of my issues with Rose, I still enjoyed it, and I can’t wait for the next book. If you love PNR, Cynthia Eden is a must read.

"On the Prowl" is the second installment of Cynthia Eden's newest series; "Bad Things."
This exciting paranormal series is a hit for me! I loved book #2 way better than the first, as the characters through out the story have become "friends" that I have been introduced already in the first book! I love all of the characters so far, and there are some new ones added too. I love how there is a kind of battle between darkness, and instead of the normal "light"...it is more like dark against even darker!!! There is a light side too; but it is more...humans against paranormals...but of course; it is much more complicated than that!!!

In this installment, we have the shapeshifter panther, Julian Craig...he did something back in book one that changed Rose Kinley's life forever. In this book, she is still coming to terms with that change, and she is finding it very hard to accept. Even though she wants her space from Julian; he has to demand that he protects her. There is some crazy "collector" who is out to get Rose and Julian will NOT let anyone hurt her ever again. After all, he feels she is his mate. Of course, Rose isn't quite feeling that way yet!! As we know in the paranormal world, anything is possible...and believe me....lots happens!

I highly recommend this series, and for that matter...I highly recommend anything that this author writes! She is brilliant, and I feel she is one of the best in her field!!!

Yay, we get Julian's and Rose's story. Despite being a panther-shifter, i loved his sweet & tender side.
Although Rose started off a weakling, i enjoyed her growth and acceptance of her now dark world. I loved that she fought for her love as she always seemed like the first one to walk away.
Filled with action, suspense and sweet, sweet loving, i recommend this book to those who follow this series. A worth- your- time read in my shelf.

P/S: Luke Thorne makes an appearance, although a late one but a very HOT one..*sigh*

There are monsters out there and Rose knows this to be true because she's one of them! Rose was human and falling in love with Julian but he had kept secrets from her and whilst trying to run from him Rose was shot in the back , died and then somehow made into a vampire! She's been running ever since but now she's running from a secret group that experiment on the monsters but who should she meet? You've guessed it Julian, were panther and paranormal executioner !
Julian isn't the usual chest beating alpha but he is very protective of Rose and always puts her above himself . The bargains he has made and everything he is willing to do for Rose is heartbreaking at times. Yes he feels she is 'his' but I had to wonder why ? Rose is so out of her depth in the darker world she has awoken to. Still thinking like a weak human when in fact Rose is now a strong paranormal and no longer prey.
This author writes pulse pounding exciting paranormal romance that constantly surprises this reader. Her work is imaginative and never predictable . Characters that are larger than life, sexy and yet there's always humour to be found. I thought her Purgatory series was good ( and it really was!) but the Bad Things series started with a bang and is still going at full tilt. What really sets this series apart are the amazing creatures that the author is bringing to glorious life. I'm hoping next up is Rayce, the irreverent and oh so funny werewolf as it would be nice to see him knocked for six but whatever this author writes I know I will be clamouring to read it!

Please beware, this is a rant about Rose
I love Julian but damn Rose ruin this whole book.

Rose?
Why can't she just accept the fact that she's a vampire and she will NEVER have a normal human life?! I do understand why she's in denial but it's been months since she turned into a vampire. I want to slap her in the face with reality. What annoyed me the most about Rose is how she always want to save everyone, even the bad guys. She repeatly hurt Julian's feeling and Julian certainly didn't deserve it. She pissed me off everytime she complain and sadly that happen a lot. For example:

"I shouldn't be here." She should be living a nice, safe, normal life far away from this madness. She shouldn't have spent months being tortured and starved. She shouldn't always be so afraid.

I badly want to punch her when I read that part. Why are you always whining? If only you face the reality sooner and train yourself then you can be a strong vampire and you won't have to be so afraid anymore.

I spent most of the time screaming out in frustration when I read this book. Julian deserve sooooo much better than Rose, my heart hurt for him. I start skimming halfway through the book. Luke and Rayce is the only reason I finished this book.

I enjoyed this much more than I did the first book.
Rose did get on my nerves at times but her independent sass was a winner. I liked how her character developed from playing the victim to becoming the hero.
Julian was hot as hell, as expected. He was a steadfast rock that Rose could never shake, and as the man who both killed her and loved her, she was his responsibility.
Need more Rayce! Loved him!!! And Leo...grrrrrrrr.
But I really want to get to know the gargoyle more! In those couple chapters he was in ... he had me. Totally had me ...

...as brooding mysterious hot guys go he's just another dreamy alpha. I WANT!

I have been waiting for what feels like forever to get this book from the library. There is only one copy and like 7 people waiting so it took quite some time.

This is the second book in the Bad Things series by Cynthia Eden. While you don't have to read the books in order, I think there is more enjoyment in the story if you do. Mainly because, Luke is the legit best and I love having him appear in the story.

Luke Thorne was the Lord of the Dark. He was the devil in disguise. He was the baddest of the bad. And he was pretty sure all of that shit should be on a t-shirt.

I would totally by a shirt that said that. LOL

This series is definitely an intriguing one. Yes, the characters are the "evil" ones, although, I wouldn't really call them that. Not even Luke. He does have control over the dark side of the paranormal world but I guess, you could say, it's a little like the tv show "Lucifer." Yes, he's bad but he doesn't just do evil things. He punishes evil...or has those in his employee, punish evil. He and the other characters' in this series know love and that is what makes them "good." It's actually quite the contrast to Leo "the good one".

I definitely recommend this series. Eden does such a good job with the paranormal books. This book is no exception.

Rose is a vampire and is not one made by a bite or born. She is changed into one by Luke after she's shot and dies when some hunters were after Julian. Julian was drawn to Rose the first moment he saw her walking on the beach, collecting sea shells. When she dies he makes a deal with Luke to save her...so Luke does and makes her a vampire.

Rose, is of course, scared and flees but later is reunited with Julian when they are both captured by the ONS (from the first book of the series). This one starts not long after that book after they are released. Julian is trying to protect her after he learns there is someone after her, someone called The Collector. He'll do anything to keep her safe, to protect her...even make a deal with someone he shouldn't.

I loved every moment of this book. I love the passion Eden writes into each one of her characters and their loves. She really makes you feel like you are in the moment.

Quotes & Faves:

Her lashes flickered. “Why didn’t you let me go? Why did you get Luke to change me?”

Because I didn’t want to be in a world without you. “I’m a selfish bastard.” Instead of letting her go, he’d forced her into a world that she would never fit into.

And the world would have gone fucking dark without you.”

“My heart isn’t…for you.” Her breath heaved out. “It…already belongs…to someone else.”

I loved it but still not as much as the first book, i think because of the characters. I didn't like Julian and Rose as much as i did Luke and Mina.
I absolutely loved seeing a lot of Luke in this one, which is what made it more interesting. And i'm starting to hate his twin Leo, not sure how his story's going to be or if i'll like it.

5 brilliant and fabulous stars!!

“I am the monster in the closet. The one that little kids are supposed to fear. I’m a nightmare, and I don’t know how to handle anything good.”

I loved the first book in the series The Devil In Disguise so much that I couldn't wait for its sequel, having said that I was quite apprehensive because I know that some sequels don't live up to the hype. I'm very happy to report that this did.

So in this book, we focus on Julian and Rose. Julian is Luke Thorne's (the main character in TDID) shifter assassin. When Julian shifts he's this deadly panther that is hell bent on bloodlust when the beast is out to play. Rose is his love interest, she also happens to be a vampire but not by convential means. After getting shot at whilst human and dying, Julian decides to make a deal with the devil, but everyone knows there's a price to pay when such a deal is struck. Add in the fact that's there's an enemy trying to capture Rose and you've got one pissed off panther.

Rose and Julian's chemistry is hot. They have a bond. Julian would literally do anything for her and vice versa. It's very beautiful to watch.

On the Prowl is one of those stories that drag you in. It's full of action, the sex is hot, it makes you feel. This is why I love Adult PNR, it's exciting and frustrating and takes you away from real life. This book does that and more.

Cannot wait for the third book Broken Angel, going to be waiting on tenterhooks.....

Happy Reading :-)

This is good. I really, really like this. I didn't read the first in this series, but am definitely going to now.

The main couple in this is a shifter and a magically made vampire. The vamp is like no other that walks the earth. Her creation was not ordinary. She was killed while human and brought back by the magic of Luke, who is basically the devil. He rules the dark, bad creatures. The vamp and the shifter go their separate ways for a while by means of the vamp running away. She can't accept who she has become. While running away she is captured by someone who wants to use her for their own sadistic purposes. The shifter saves her. Their path to love is one filled with hiccups, explosions, bullets, and many other hurdles.

Besides the main creature there are so many other breeds of characters in this. We see an angel, a muse, a witch, and more. With all these characters I hope this series will grow. I can't wait to continue, but first some back tracking.

This reminds me of Immortals After Dark meets Midnight Breeds, both are favorite series of mine.

I received a complimentary copy of this is exchange for an honest review.

When faced with a terrible fate, Julian makes the decision for his love Rose, and the human Rose is changed to Vampire against her wishes. Can they live with this choise, and could Rose ever see Julians side of this?
When Rose´s life is in danger once again, she´ll have no choice than to trust him again, and hope they´ll both come out of this unscathed.
PNR Romance, action, suspense and smutty fluff in a great combo. Can´t wait to see more from this series!

Honestly I did not like Rose for at least half the book. I didn't think that she deserved Julian. But the second half she pull on her big girl panties and grew a pair. This was really good. I had no doubt even when I was liking the h. I'm curious about whats going to happen with Leo. Is he going to get a book. I kinda hope so and then kinda hope not. Cause right now I really really do not like him.

There are certain authors that no matter what they write, you love it. For me, Cynthia Eden is one of those authors. I really love her books...all of them and believe it or not she writes like a manic. Something I both love and hate about her. Okay, I'm lying I don't hate her for it at all.

Each time she has something new out I run to read it. Love them!!!

On the Prowl is book 2 of her new Bad Things series. If you haven't yet read The Devil in Disguise you are really missing out. Who else could make you fall for the devil?

On the Prowl is about Julian and Rose. You meet Julian in The Devil in Disguise. You also meet Rose in the book too but not as much. Right away you want to know more about Julian. You get that he owes Luke something and get a glimpse to what that is but until his book your don't really understand the depth of it.

Poor Rose is thrown into a life that she wants nothing to do with. In fact she's really to soft and sweet for that life.

Since Rose is having issues with what she now is and the part Julian plays in it they spend a lot of the book in conflict. At times I wish they hadn't spent so much of their time hashing old wounds. Buy the end of the story you'll understand everything and be happy that these two found each other.

For those of us who read The Devil in Disguise you'll be happy to know that Luke shows up in this one too. His brother is also in the story and just when you think you've gotten another piece of the puzzle he blows any good feels you have for him out of the water.

His story is going to be a good one to read.

~ Book provided by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion

Lately I've been having some bad luck with second books in a series, so I was wary if it would happen again, but I didn't need to worry. It's Cynthia Eden were talking about. She can't write bad paranormal romance books ;)

I gave the previous book, Devil In Disguise, 4 stars, which in my opinion is a really good rating, so imagine my surprise that I liked On The Prowl still a teeny tiny bit more, why I will explain in the following review.

While I liked the story of Devil in Diguise I wasn't all convinced by the characters, Luke and Mina. With On The Prowl it was different. I already liked Julian when he was just a side character and Rose was pretty bad-ass and had her own mind. Together those two characters worked well. Their relationship had chemistry and I really liked how you could see the trust and love growing between them.

Another reason - aside from the characters - that made me like On The Prowl more was that I'm a huge sucker for vampires and shifters and in this book we got both, so I was pretty happy.

The overall story of the book was interesting and had me hooked to the last page.

I have no complains when it comes to Cynthia Eden's writing style. Like always she captured me right from the start and I basically flew through the pages. Hell, I've read like 40 books of her. I should like her writing style, don't you think? ;)

I can't wait to see what will happen in the next book, called Broken Angel. It will release in December and will feature Rayce. Why is December still so far away?

Rating: 4,25 stars

WerePanther Julian saves his human girlfriend Rose from death by having Luke Thorne (Lord of the Dark from the first book) save her by making her a vampire. Cut to a few years later, and the couple meets up again. To save Rose, Julian had sold his soul to Luke Thorne and is working for him. Rose has been targeted by a paranormal ‘collector’, and Julian has been charged in hunting the collector down and saving his victims.

I normally love anything Eden writes, but this one wasn't doing much for me. Eden has done better, much better. This was light, fluffy, repetitive, and just not all that entertaining. Julian and Rose chased after the collector, got hurt, had sex, then rinse and repeat for the rest of the book. The story didn't keep me particularly engaged, and when I finished I actually gave a sigh of relief that it was over. It was okay, but nothing special...bland and disappointing.

Still love Cynthia Eden, but I think she does a better job on her RS stories these days. Her PNR is just not as good as it was in the old days. This is autopilot work.

Julian can be quite the little buggar, “but if I’d chased you, that would have just brought out the beast in me.” He stared at her with his glowing eyes. “It’s better if he comes out when we’re alone. Not here.” I'm in love with this series I love the characters! I can't wait for the next one.

Loved it!

Action, blood, death and paranormals galore? Oh my! I freaking love how Eden writes her paranormal romances. So much going on and I cannot ever put the book down, until I'm done. This is the story of our beautiful Julian, the panther and his mate, the very love of his life, Rose. On the night when Julian decides to tell her the truth about himself, his enemies attack, and Rose dies in the process. Then Julian makes a deal with devil and ends up losing her in the process. Rose is now a vampire and is not happy about it all.
In the end there is a evil mastermind who is collecting paranormals to "make" his deceased wife come back to life. Talk about psycho much? Lol. It was great and I adore Luke so freaking much! Glad he made a famous appearance and got his brother, Leo his twin, a little bit of a payback for not being so good after all. Julian and Rose get their HEA! 4.5 stars.

3.5 stars..

Good enough read but Rose got on my nerves with her BS one too many times. Julian was good but that unnecessary drama at the end lost him some brownie points. I figured Leo was genuinely good but he turned out to be a major dick too. Luke was fun to read about and I'm off to read Rayce and Lila'a story. I just hope she isn't a holier-than-thou FMC, but considering the fact that she's a literal angel...my hopes aren't high.
