I'm not a seasoned or jaded traveler ... yet! Neophyte European travelers will find that experience and time are the limiting resources when it comes to pre-planning a first trip to a destination as large and complex as the City of Lights. The Eyewitness Travel Top 10 format provides more than enough details to allow for an informed choice between competing destinations but unlike many of the competing alternative guides, it makes no attempt to be encyclopedic drowning an unsuspecting reader in so much knowledge that choices become next to impossible.
Eyewitness Travel Guides seem to have the market beat by a long margin! That's not to say that Lonely Planet, Frommer, Michelin or the Blue and Green Guides miss the mark entirely but the Eyewitness series, in general, seems to be more informative. The photographs and illustrations instill a higher degree of keen anticipation and provide a better means of choosing in advance between a world of competing destinations and alternative tourist attractions. And I can't say enough about the Top 10 format ... dozens of lists - events, restaurants, hotels, museums, walks, churches, bars, great spots for children, insider tips and so much more. Whether your taste in vacations runs to exploring the hot night life spots or scoping out the most exciting history that museums and art galleries have to offer, Top 10 Paris will make your trip easier to plan and more enjoyable in the doing.
Portability, durability, sensible layout and organization not to mention the included maps of the city and the metro system make Top 10 Paris the correct choice to tote along with you while you're actually out and about in Paris as well.
Finally, Top 10 Paris is a great way of post-filling information and details into some of the holes or places that you might miss or have to rush through when you're actually on the trip. Along with photographs and trip journals, it's also a wonderful way to resurrect detailed memories of a trip long after you've returned home.
I wanted a pocket-sized guide for a brief trip to Paris and this fit the bill: just enough information to make sure I didn't miss any of the highlights without being overwhelming. The waterproof pullout maps sounded like a good idea, but in the end, were too small to be useful to these eyes on the go.
I enjoyed Montmatre, cocktails in the Latin Quarter and of course Shakespeare and Co. Deux Maggots less so, 8 euros for a bottle of water - no wonder Hemingway shot himself.
DK Eyewitness Travel provide a wide range of travel books, perfect for anyone travelling to a new destination for the first time. For my trip to Paris, the book clearly outlined a range of information which was useful to me, including how to travel around Paris on public transport and which galleries and museums to visit (and how to book these). This is a pocket sized guide, making it easier to take with me while abroad to refer to when needed. Its maps helped me locate the activities we attended and figure out which order to do things in to save time on travelling between places. It also included fun tips and facts about each popular sightseeing activity we chose to do! I’ll definitely be using their Venice version next year to research my journey.
Solid introduction to Paris. I usually start with one of the Top Ten travel books by Eyewitness Travel as I find them to be a good overview of the cities I plan to visit. The Paris 2016 Edition has been no different. Mike Gerrard and Donna Dailey give brief but descriptive highlights to the sites. They also wrote some fun lists, examples include Top 10 places to eat for each city quarter, food shops, shopping, and even a Top 10 list of graves at the Cimetiere de Passy, amongst many others. The guide is a nice pocket size with a handy pull-out map. I always enjoy how colorful these guidebooks are.
The Top Ten for Paris are: 1. Musee du Louvre 2. Musee d'Orsay 3. Notre-Dame 4. Eiffel Tower 5. Sacre-Coeur 6. Arc de Triomphe 7. Centre Georges Pomidou 8. Pantheon 9. Saint-Chapelle 10. Hotel des Invalides
The book is useful for an overview of Paris and should give any traveler the basics for their France experience.
Not that I have any plans to visit Paris (or anywhere else for that matter!) in the near future but that didn't hinder my enjoyment of this little DK travel guide to Gay Paree. Included are fold out maps, photographs, hints, and places to see in various sections of the city. As I have never been to Europe I cannot vouch for its usefulness or accuracy but it at least serves as good advertising! Once again, DK can do no wrong.
A decent review of the most famous destinations in Paris, collected as handy Top 10 lists in each category of travel and interest, so it contains much more than a regular "Top 10" list. It was a great way to begin planning my trip, with a good amount of information throughout the city. Would be 4-star, but knocking off one star because the restaurants, hotels, etc. have all changed since its printing.
Brilliant little book. Used it all the time. Particulary liked the maps. Great ideas of places to visit. Will get the latest DK book next time we go away on a city break.
I love these top 10 books. They give a snapshot of a country or major city with fold out maps of the city and subway/metro. It is compact and can easily be stuck into a purse/bag. I always purchase one of these books for a starter in any place I travel to. It points me in the direction I choose for more in depth study. I used this top 10 book for Ireland/Dublin as my only resource for backpacking once when I accidentally left my small bag of in depth books/maps at a layover airport. It got me through- although I wouldn't recommend that for a novice! These are a great place to start when looking at traveling in an unfamiliar place abroad.
Nice try. A top 10 list of many things. What makes the list? What classifies a place as a 5th or a 7th? Magic. At least tripadvisor is free with an adblocker.
The deepities are sweet: "Do not confuse the genuine homeless (known as “SDFs”) with organized beggars at the top tourist spots who should be avoided and ignored." Do they have to pass an interview before the tourists? And if the poor traveler makes the grave mistake of confusing the two types, what happens? And how to get out? Nothing to see. The pickpocketing section, starts next.
These Top 10 Eyewitness Guides have great maps, and it's helpful to see pictures for key sites, but I didn't agree with the books priorities. This was less helpful than other Eyewitness Guides I've used (New York City for example). But I did use the small fold-out travel map on a recent trip which was very useful.
Good overview book to plan a short trip or get a general lay of the land. Quite helpful to read as an ebook-you can click through to links and jump around to various sections as needed. The maps could be a little pixelated when blown up and it took awhile to scroll between sections as there were often 3 or 4 blank pages, so at times I thought the app wasn’t loading when it was actually fine.
A great series of guides if looking for a place to begin your exploration of the great cities of the world. If your time is limited, these guides help you to select the important places/events you may not want to miss. Certainly helped in our online searches for information.
The Eyewitness Top 10 Guides are fantastic for very basic information with lots of pictures and reliable practical info. It lacks, however, almost any sort of interesting fact, narrative, context or story at all. It is best used together with the Blue Guide series for context and info.
Great mini guide or highlights. No real depth for walking tours or history. But a great starting place for top 10 museums, sightseeing spots etc. Lovely photos and good maps. Use with another guide book for more details.
This guidebook paired with Lonely Planet's "Paris Encounter" completed our research for our trip to Paris. This one had a better map and hit all of the major touristy things to do, which really helped us narrow down our list (since we were only in Paris for 3 days).
Good travel series. Provides a lot of information and recommendations for a variety of "Top 10" things to see and do around the city. They list all of the major tourist attractions, along with a lot of out of the way places.
There may be a few words I missed while using this book, but I'm counting it! These travel books are my favorite in general. Easy to read, travel with, and gets the job done. My constant companion through Paris!
Carried this book everyday while in Paris. Fantastic highlights (museums, shops, monuments, etc) for every neighborhood. The map was worthless - very oddly shaped and difficult to refold.
Does what it says on the tin! Pretty decent travel book, handy map, great suggestions for a short stay in Paris if you don't have a lot of time. I actually kept reading it after the holiday was over.
