Campbell Mackenzie is a successful lawyer with occasional feelings of déjà vu. There's just one problem – it's not déjà vu.
This discovery leads to tragic consequences and Mackenzie's once-perfect life falls apart, until he encounters a mysterious woman with a secret of her own.
From glittering Hong Kong to outback Australia and the underbelly of Tokyo, Mackenzie finds himself caught up in a world of conspiracies and organized crime, and an unrelenting pursuit where fate is always one step ahead.
"A fantastic, stylish, fast-paced read"
"Hooked since the first chapter"
"Something at the turn of every page or around every corner. Highly recommend this book, do yourself a favor and get lost in it for a while"
Toryn Chapman was given the idea for his second novel by a reader of his acclaimed first novel, The Grey Cat. “I wouldn’t want to know the future,” she said. What started as an idle reflection on that simple statement developed quickly into a story that begged to be written, and Second Sight is the result.
When not writing, Toryn can be found wrangling three children, four chickens and a beehive.
This book kept me reading till all hours of the night. I couldn't put the book down. It was an unexpected but welcome change from the typical “American” crime culture. The author gives us a glimpse into the crime syndicate of Japan and of the Japanese culture. The characters were well developed and the twists in the plot kept you wondering just what was going to happen next.
Campbell Mackenzie was a very successful attorney until his life falls apart with the death of his wife and infant son. He has always just “known” things before they actually happen, but only starts to realize and accept that he has “second sight” after the accident that took the life of his wife and child. His “survivor quilt over not being able to prevent the accident sends him into 2 years of mental torment and a lot of alcohol abuse. Reliving the nightmare in his dreams is destroying his life. When he begins having a new dream of a lady's death, he knows he has to act to change her fate, and hopefully end his own torment.
Kaiko is a young, beautiful lady of mixed Hawaiian and Japanese descent. She is a very intelligent accountant who, unfortunately, unbeknownst to her, marries the head of the Japanese Yakuza crime syndicate. When Kaiko discovers her husband is a powerful crime lord and discovers the extent of his crimes – she flees. Now her husband and his entire crime syndicate want her dead!
The paths of Mackenzie and Kaiko intertwine as he attempts to change her fate by saving her from the Japanese crime lord. Where their paths will lead is everyone's guess, but I have a hunch that Mackenzie knows.
I thank the author for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was a new author for me but I found the story extremely fantastic. The storyline was very well thought out with intelligent design and style..it had actual current situations that unfortunately are happening in the world.. However I found it at times difficult to fallow along and would have to re-read things because it would just jump from current day to the past. Once you got used to it it became a little easier but jumping from past to current with at least two characters I hope if there is a second book it is easier to read .I truly hope there is a second book.!!
The last time he had an especially vivid dream, he ignored it and it came true, resulting in the deaths of his wife and child. Now he's having dreams of a murder in japan and he's determined not to let this one come true. Good premise and it's well thought out and written well. Add to that, the involvement of the possible victim in the Japanese mafia, and you've got a pretty good book. Not a great one, but better than most freebies.
The main reason I enjoy a book is if it has a good plot, likable characters and a despicable antagonist. I like different from the usual romance, usual criminal and same old story. This book is not just different but also draws attention to horrible human rights violations. It also throws in a bit of humor so it has it all.
Kind of wished that the Takanashi-gumi had been exposed for what it was and it’s members taken down. Seemed like killing off Jiro to let that Yakuza faction continue was the easy way out.
I would have given the book more stars, but the spelling and grammatical errors were too much for me.

I was recommended this book by a beloved Author and I am so glad I followed suit. This book is filled with twists, turns and strong characters. The beginning is heart wrenching but sets the stage for what is to come. Very well written and gripping from start to finish. I highly recommend.
This is such an original story with very interesting and well developed characters. The bad guy is smart and scary and you really root for the romantic couple.
I absolutely loved this book. Her main character, Makenzie, showed emotions and depth that grabbed me from the first page. The interaction between him and Kaiko was excellent. Her story in this book compelled me to buy her other one.
This book was really entertaining, although it started off slowly. The characters were original and well developed. As an American, it was a window opening to a totally different culture and I completely enjoyed the ride.
Kept me on the edge of my seat. Lots of surprising twists and turns. I'm a "goes to bed at 10pm-er...but I stayed up well past midnight a couple of nights for this one!
Fun read, happy ending. good escape from the news of the day. The good guys one, the bad guys lost. The kind stranger helped the beautiful girl and they lived happily ever after
Cam can sense the future, Kaiko is hiding from her husband. Doesn't sound like much, but turned into a thrill ride that I just had to read in one go. Loved it.
This is a non-stop heart pounding story. Mack is amazing, but I don't think I would want the responsibility of his power. Great characters and settings.
What a fantastic read. I was mesmerized. Absolutely nothing what I expected. Five STARS plus plus plus!
A fav quote from the Japanese viewpoint: " Social security is really a patchy sort of safety net. I guess society says that making things better is really the responsibility of individuals, not the government.” I like that.
An amazing story, that takes place in the most unusual setting. We find ourselves in Australia, then in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Hawaii, and back to the Outback. The details are very absorbing and the story is very gripping. What to do if you know the outcome of a situation? That is a Dilemma that Mackenzie needs to settle, gilt ridden by a fatality that he foresaw but just remembered at the most unfortunate time, makes him try to prevent things from happening but maybe he isn't suppose to, maybe destiny can't be changed. There are some topics that are very realistic and will make you think twice before accepting something that is too good to be true. Note: I received a digital copy free for review and an honest and unbiased opinion.
Not sure what I was expecting but it definitely was not this. It grabs you from the beginning and takes you halfway around the world. The story is not so far fetched as to make it totally unbelievable but instead keeps you on the edge of your seat with narrow escapes and sometimes not so well thought out plans. Great book. This is a recommended read.
I loved this book a lot more than I thought I would. it's not the usual book I'd pick for myself, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. it was well written and the second sight power was very well done. I was hoping it wasn't one of those "that's so eaven" vision of the future types and it was no where near that. it was so much better done and thought out. the characters are understandable and loveable (or hate - able depending on which character we're talking about here) it was a well rounded story with a build up, a climax, a conclusion, as well as tragedy, love, deceit, betrayal, trust and loyalty. overall I would highly recommend it
