Cindy Harper welcomes all those who believe in the paranormal to her inn. She’s thrilled by the success of her business even though she questions the existence of things that go bump in the night. But her doubts will soon disappear, because more than just wannabe vampires and werewolves are checking in. And a secret from her past is about to threaten her future.
Ancient vampire Thrain Davis has come to the inn to right a centuries-old wrong. He finds more than he expects, though, when he meets the beautiful and way too sexy innkeeper. As they join forces to outwit two powerful cosmic troublemakers and to defeat an enraged Jersey Devil, he realizes that the unthinkable has happened. He has fallen in love with the one woman he can never have
Talk about misspent youth. What did I do during those lazy summer days of childhood when I could’ve been honing my writing skills? Nothing. Okay, so I spent a lot of time dreaming I was a cowgirl with a trusty black stallion. Oh, and I read every Walter Farley horse novel. I was an only child so I relied on my imagination to supply the excitement in my life.
By high school, I’d decided to trade in my lariat for a trench coat. I was into dark and dangerous. As an intrepid foreign correspondent, I’d stalk the mean streets of the world. Did I actually write anything? No, but I did read all of Agatha Christie’s mysteries.
I worked at a department store during college. My short stint in the accounting department taught me a lot about math. Three hundred-dollar shortages plus hysterical tears equaled instant move to gift-wrap. A career in math was not in my future. I didn’t care because I’d discovered “real” literature. I plowed through James Joyce’s Ulysses and Tolstoy’s War and Peace. If it didn’t make my eyes cross then it wasn’t worth reading. Yes, I admit it, I was a literary snob.
Nina and best buddy, Barbara Joyce. Folk singers extraordinaire.
But there’s just so much “real” literature one person can take. I graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in English Literature and a determination to avoid books that induced eye crossing or had tragic endings. The only things I managed to write during those years were research papers.
I taught second grade for several years then spent two years in Dublin, Ireland. A friend and I supported ourselves by singing folk songs in Irish pubs. We weren’t great, but we were young, enthusiastic, and wore short skirts. It was obviously my destiny to be the next Judy Collins. I spent a lot of time poring through music books.
Returning to New Jersey and reality, I taught elementary school until I grew restless again. My cross-country odyssey included stays in Arizona, California, and Texas. Along the way, I indulged my love of horses. No black stallions, but I did have several beautiful Arabian mares. I read tons of books on breeding and showing.
Somewhere between California and Texas I grew addicted to romance novels and cats. The cat’s independent attitude was exactly the quality I admired in my romance heroes. And once I decided to try writing my own romances, I made sure a cat crept into each story.
Texas is my permanent home. I’ve come full circle. Born in San Antonio, I spent most of my life in New Jersey. Maybe the Texas in my blood accounts for my attachment to strong men, fast horses, and wide-open spaces. My love of cats? Haven’t a clue.
I was not sure I would enjoy this book, but I ended up really liking it. There was a lot of humor (always a plus) and such a wide range of crazy supernatural characters. Both the mc's were flawed and had to work through their issues, which made them more relatable. I didn't read the first book in this series but had no trouble jumping in with book two. I think each book is about a different pair of characters instead of continuing the same story. I would read the other books just to see what trouble Prada (aka Sparkle Stardust) and Trojan get into. I want their jobs.
2 stars I have somehow (accidentally? because surely not on purpose) read two books now by Nina Bangs similar to this one….I can tell you with absolute certainty that I LOATHE anything with gross Ganymead and Sparkle Whats-her-face. Loathe entirely!!! :( The small redemption that prompted 2 stars from me was the fact that I liked the trope of the woo woo inn that attracts a variety of “creatures” visiting/surrounding it. I enjoyed the idea of Molly’s ghost at the cemetery bit. The Jersey Devil could do with his own book (without the horrible “cosmic troublemakers”). Yet there was just way too much that put me off here! A huge negative that I feel I must mention was the droning on and on and onnnnnnnn from the main characters. It certainly ruined the sexy bits with the constant “senses” blathering. Overall: Just a way far out there, annoying mess IMO.
Needs to be mentioned: I think if you’re a fan of wacky-bizzarro characters & kinda raunchy humor you might enjoy Nina Bangs books. But yeah, so not the type of books/author for me.
Have you ever seen Mars Attacks ? That's what this reminded me of. It started off insane with two insanely named characters talking about I have no idea what. Then it got confusing when she said she didn't believe in the supernatural but admitted to being over 700 years old. Then it circled back to "Wha?" with characters being obsessed with the FMC and MMC boning, and having no idea what characters were human and not. And it ended on "I just can't anymore," in a dream that made no sense and yet matched perfectly with the book so far. I get this is supposed to be a comedy, but I can't tell where the serious parts are supposed to be and where the comedy is supposed to be.
Nothing like having a planted memory of someone trying to have sex with you when you didn't consent to said memory, and the whole thing was so unbelievable that, of course, she went along with it.
I gave four stars for humor, sexiness, and the fact that since I bought this book about 15 years ago I’ve thought of myself as a cosmic troublemaker. There are some plot holes and the climax is sort of thrown in without being explained other than ‘le sigh, cosmic troublemakers will be cosmic troublemakers.’ Idk if you really pick up a book with the word bang on the cover and expect much in the way of plots. It does get deep tho. Also I rarely laugh out loud at a book so as holy as this one is it has made it into my permanent library. Also I’d like one of those kinky blankets. Descriptions are on point.
This book was soooo good! I am so glad his long lost daughter was found and that Thrain found his love. They compliment each other well and of course we can’t have a great story without our cosmic troublemakers!
Cindy was happy running her inn, even if her guest were crazy thinking they were vampires r werewolves r some weird paranormal being. Then he walked in her door and her whole world chanced.. great book as always ..
Thrain felt he owed his long-time friend and fellow clan member a reunion with the daughter he inadvertently "lost" by helping her mother flee while she was pregnant. Cindy has lived for a !omg time and isn't sure why. Thrain comes to Cindy's "Woo Woo Inn", where she caters to what she thinks is all harmless supernatural themes. But she soon learns that there is more to it than she thinks. With the Cosmic Troublemakers Sparkle ("Prada") and Ganymede ("Trojan") making a return to this series, things are just getting hot and bothered!
Cindy runs a hotel specialising in an experience of the supernatural kind, but when Mr. Hot sexy vampire walks in and books a room, things start to get very interesting. Cindy has a secret, she may look twenty eight but she has lived for over seven centuries and has no idea why, little does she know that Thrain has the answers she seeks and has been sent to bring Cindy to her father Darach.
I have to say, I was expecting so much more from this book, it was such a chore for me to read. I found myself putting the book down for days at a time trying to get myself motivated to continue on and finish it but it was tough going, it just didn’t capture me, I was seriously considering just giving up on it. I probably enjoyed the interaction between Trojan the “cat” and Thrain more than anything else. I found the characters so bland and uninteresting, I found myself skimming through most of the book, it was just not suited to my tastes. I think it might have something to do with the way it was written, it just didn’t hold my attention. It did get better towards the end but if I hadn’t read this book, I wouldn’t have missed out on anything. Not even the steamy scenes could save this book for me.
I really enjoyed Master of Ecstacy which is book one of this series so I picked up Night Bites, Book 2 in the Mackenzie Vampires series. Basically it's the story of Thrain Davis, a vampire and Darach's best friend from Master of Ecstacy and Cindy Harper, the owner of the supernatually inclined Woo Woo Inn. Cindy promotes the Woo Woo Inn as being haunted in order to attract a supernatural clientel..or atleast those who believe they are, however, she doesn't actually believe in the paranormal which after living for over 700 hundred year I find completely bizarre. Ganymede and Sparkle Stardust are back but this time they are undercover as Trojan and Prada and as always they are up to their mischevious ways promoting chaos as our favorite cosmic troublemakers. Darach and Blythe, from Master of Ecstacy make a brief appearance in Night Bites and continue to live happily ever after. That said, truth be told, I really liked Thrain but overall I just didn't feel driven to get to the end of the story. I kinda took my time and hoped something would happen but not really. It is an entertaining read, but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone specifically. Skip the first half and begin around page 100. It begins to get better around that point.
I love getting to see more of Thrain and knowing what he has been up to since Blyth and Darach saved his life I love Darach and Blyth so seeing them again at the end was great too
Loved Night Bites, Book 2, Mackenzie Vampires, even more than Book 1, Master of Ecstasy (MOE). This book is the story of vampire Thrain Davis (Darach's best friend from MOE) and Cindy Harper, owner of the Woo Woo Inn. Cindy promotes the Woo Woo Inn as being haunted, but doesn't actually believe in the paranormal. Using the pseudonyms of Trojan and Prada, Ganymede and Sparkle Stardust are back doing their mischevious best to promote chaos as cosmic troublemakers. Werewolves, werecats, witches, wizards, vampires of various sorts, and assorted other paranormal guests, along with humans make the Woo Woo Inn a delightful place to visit--only wish it were real so that I could schedule a long weekend. Darach and Blythe briefly appear in this book and appear to have lived happily over the last few centuries. There is a secret about Cindy Harper that makes the ending particularly poignant, but, no spoilers, you'll just have to read the book. Night Bites is a wonderfully romantic story.
It was ok. I really liked Thrain but....I wasn't anxious to get through this one, nor did I have to push through it. I just took my time. Again, interesting future inventions that would curl your toes and a visit with Darach and Blythe. Overall just a read.
Best Quotes from book:
"When you find six feet of hot, sexy male orbiting your sun, you'd better grab him or you'll end up colder than Pluto." ---Sprinkle Stardust as Prada
"Sometimes what we fear the most is what we need to complete us." ---Prada
"Me? I'm terpect...uh pectfer." "I'm perfect." ---Ganymede as Trojan the cat
"A woman always gives strength to the man who loves her." ---Thrain
"You don't repay friendship. It can't be bought or sold. It simply is." ---Cindy
A woman has been living and moving around for over seven centuries, but she does not believe in the supernatural. A man has been trying to track down the daughter of his best friend for around seven centuries because he thinks it is his fault his best friend’s wife ran away. The twist, he is a vampire. Okay so she really is too (half anyway), and she opened up the Woo Woo Inn to attract people interested in the supernatural. She accidentally set up her inn as a supernatural no-fire zone. Take all of these elements, throw in a pair of 'cosmic troublemakers' and shake thoroughly. This second book in the series is a wonderfully zany addition to any vampire fans book list.
Another great book by Nina Bangs. This books takes place after the first book. In the first book we met Thrain Davis who is a friend of the hero of the first book Darach Mackenzie. Thrain takes it upon himself to find Darach's long lost daughter, the daughter he doesn't know he has. Cindy Harper owns a little B&B which caters to people who believe in the supernatural. Cindy has lived for quite a long time but she doesn't want to become a research project to find out why. Again, Sparkle and Ganymede are back. Sparkle's goal in life is to cause chaos by setting up people who are completely wrong for each other. These two supporting characters are terrific.
3.5 stars. Sweet book, although I'm thinking that a 700+ vampire is pretty enlightened and in touch with his feelings but maybe that came with age. Cindy, who is around the same age, is very enlightened and modern, but again maybe after 700 years that's how everyone would be. Who knows. The reunion scene between Cindy and her father Darach was a little lacking and very short. Even after all of this though, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.
The style of this book reminded me of Katie MacAlisters Dragon series since it also has the ridicolous/funny/sexy elements. However, I think KMA makes it work where Nina Bangs fails. The story was all over the place, the plot was pretty boring, and the ridicolous/funny scenes weren't that entertaining in my humble opinion. It was well written though and that's the only reason why I did finish the book at all.
Ick. I don't expect much from supernatural romances, but this was just terrible. It reads like really bad fan-fic, deus ex characters and all. The summary reminded me vaguely of Keeper series by Tanya Huff, in that it was set in an inn where weird things happen, but unlike Tanya Huff, this was terrible. The romance part wasn't any good, and it couldn't save the uneven and bizarre supernatural bits.
This one was okay, but really kind of similar to the first one. I liked the first one a great deal. I didn't need a re-hashing of it. I drifted between liking it and not and finally concluded it was meh. I didn't fully care for the characters and the ending was rushed with the conclusion of the dealings with the Jersey Devil and Cindy's father way too convenient. Overall, a disappointment and I don't know if I will continue the series.
I liked the element of this book where a character had lived for 700 years, and had no idea why, as well as being in the business of running an inn for supernatural being's that she didn't believe were real. It was interesting to see the way it all came to be explained. As for the other characters, I found then most interesting, strange, but very fun.
It was Ok. Perhaps because I hadnt been able to read the first book in the series I didnt really get what was going on with the plot line. How can you live for 700 years and not believe in the supernatural ???
This book was pretty ridiculous, even for me. I even had a dream that I met up with someone else who was reading the book (after I'd finished) and I told them to skip the whole first half, but that it gets better after page 100. Go figure, I guess I was hopeful that it would improve.
Number 2 in the MacKenzie Vampires series. Nina Bangs does it again with a great mix of paranormal romance, real humor, action, adventure, good story and wonderful side characters! Oh, and hot sex too! I'm looking forward to reading book 3."
This is another great vampire romance from Nina Bangs. Her characters are fun, eccentric. The romance is great. This isn't a dark vampire romance by any means.
