Standing over six feet tall, USA Today bestselling author Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair of a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.
He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER'S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works. His books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
This is the tenth book of a fifteen book series. If you're like me, you enjoy a long series more than a stand-alone novel or trilogy - IF it's well-written and original. This one is quite different; it's not often readers have an opportunity to discover interesting new worlds and entirely unique races, and there are many creative, unheard-of races in this series. I'd highly recommend the Frostborn series to fans of the various Forgotten Realms sagas or any other fantasy series.
Problems:
1 - Lack of editing. We've all been there. You're losing yourself in a great story, forgetting about reality for a little while, then BAM! There's a typo, extra word, or missing word to ruin the flow, and as you do an involuntary double take the real world comes crashing back. I've definitely seen much worse, but the number of errors throughout this series is still a shame. If the author would just read over it once, or send it to a beta reader before publishing, his readers would have a much more enjoyable experience.
2 - Repetition. Summarizing each main character's back story in every novel seems unnecessary; people aren't going to start from book ten and go backwards. Also, having characters explain a situation, then restate it multiple times is annoying.
3 - As others have pointed out, the hero Ridmark Arban is overused. There's a whole group of colorful main characters here, but no matter how chaotic the fighting may become, it's usually Ridmark who strikes down a major enemy or accomplishes something significant.
PRAISE:
1 - Originality! I'm 35 years old and have been an avid reader all my life, but I've never heard of at least half the races he introduces in this series. Bravo, Moeller! Even the races we've seen before are so different in this story, they easily hold the reader's attention.
2 - Character development. As the Frostborn series progresses, so do many characters' personalities. Moeller allows readers access to their inner thoughts, feelings, and struggles so we can watch them grow. Though the repetition can be frustrating at times, I still appreciate those details and glimpses.
I found that this was a good book that built off all what came before and Moringas' death is still present, and the way it effects the rest of the characters I like. I also like how all the arcs restocked here.
I'm a tiny bit conflicted by this book. Firstly, I was disappointed by the length of time from the previous book and this book, and the story line seems to be slowing down for an inevitable final battle. Having said that, these later books are losing the paint-by-numbers that the early cheaters of the earlier books had. The plot kept me turning pages and the climax was rather delicious. The resolution, while short, has left me hungry for the next book in the series.
The pervasive errors (grammatic, spelling, punctuation) are incredibly annoying and take away from the enjoyment of the plot to such a degree that I knocked off 2 stars from what would otherwise have been a 5-star rating for the entertainment value of the majority of these books. Even a middle school student would be able to point out numerous errors. Is anyone editing these books before publication? I have read all on the kindle. I hope that the print version has been proofed at least once...
The saga of Ridmark and Calliande tell a tale of wonderment, battle, grief, victory, love, loss and much more. The story in this book does not fail to disappoint anyone who loves a well woven plot. This will be better if the reader has read the earlier novels, but reading it first will lead the newly initiated to them anyway.
A must read.. Many life lessons within this series.
We all must live in a world of rules. Are rules made to be broken?? This series of books answers that question and many more.... although written in another world, the trials are sometimes the same.. I hope you laugh, cry, worry and hope as you read the Firstborn series.
I just finished book #11 of the Frostborn Series and can't wait for the next one. When I started reading the very first book in the series, I wasn't sure I would keep reading it. About half way through I was hooked and went on to read the next one. These are some of the most captivating characters I have ever seen. Great Reading Everyone!!!!!!
While the author does sometimes rehash the thoughts of the various characters the story keeps flowing always bringing new twists to the story. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and look forward to rest of this story. Thank you for writing Thames books.
It was wonderful to visit these amazing characters again. I was thrilled that Ridmark and Calliande and their faithful followers were on another amazing journey. I love these adventures.
Ridmark and his friends are hard pressed fighting a war on two fronts; one against the alien frostborn and the other a civil war. with what citizens of the realm they have being split in two they need to find allies to help them win the wars and hope to survive. So They decide to go to the Manetaur people as well as for the Dwarves. Hoping that they can get aid from one or both nations. Moeller continues to write an excellent store with interesting characters and intriguing enemies that keep the reader coming back for more.
J Moeller has become one of my 2 fav authors. The Frostborn is ,so far comparable to RA SALVATORE’s Drizzet .we get to follow several main story lines & characters as they face all their trials& tribulations, as we watch the characters grow with the storylines over many years.great series!
It lost a little steam midway, but finished up strong. The author does a great job of feeling the storylines in so that the overall plot continues forward.
The Frostborn Series is one of the best, I have read so far. Ridmark and company, fight to save their world from the Frostborn and creatures of dark Magick.
The author continues his formula of keeping the pages turning though i felt this book to have more than the usual repetitive paragraphs (and typos), if not a bit shorter than the previous ones. after 11 books we should know enough of our characters to not have things repeated.
personally i don't think this story warrants 15 books - half that. however as i said prior the author's formula works for now.
Hmmm, not as good as it could have been, seems like this was a "gap filler" - but still somewhat enjoyable. I like Third, I hope she gets fleshed out a LOT more in the coming books.
