I really enjoyed this story but I was not expecting this to be such an angsty read. Well, quite angsty for me, but it might not be so much for others. I kinda ruined this midway when I read Tempest's synopsis as I was curious of whether this was an MF or MFM, but it didn't really reduce any of the emotions. I would say it ratcheted up my anxiety because of what was to come.

I felt sad for Ana for the majority of this book. Her initial unrequited feelings for her friend, the shit she deals with from jealous classmates and not understanding the changes she's going through. I liked Kellin's friendship with Ana, but, to a point. I think the fact that he let a lot of what Ana endured when he could have done something, weak. Still, I empathized for him and the deep regret he felt for 'what might have been' because of the choice he made between duty and following his heart. The same would go for her friendship with Mel, she wasn't exactly bad and Ana loves her, but I think she was really more concerned for her own position than standing her ground with Ana. With all this, it really felt like Ana was alone to deal with everything.

I loved the relationship building between Calix and Ana. He is so tormented, but clearly loves Ana as much as she loves him. I just hope we get a solid HEA because from what's written for Tempest.. I don't know wtf is going to happen.

Overall, I thought it's a very unique and interesting story line and definitely give a go if you enjoy paranormal romance and some tragic feels. There's clear potential for Ana to grow and strengthen in the next book, which will be exciting to see.

Ana is a seventeen year old senior in high school whose greatest problems in life was finding a date for homecoming and tackling her feelings for her friend, Kellin. When she starts getting strange outwardly dreams and meets the new hot guy in school however, her life starts to turn upside down. Not everyone is who they seem and that includes Ana, whose latest ability to set her hands on fire proves she is anything but normal.
This story was funny, engaging and full of drama as we see Ana’s life unfolding. The book starts off with a typical high school setting with the cheerleader bullies and the main character having a crush on a football star that’s into one of them. The two guys vying for her attention end up being more than just high school boys and I found myself uncertain of who to trust alongside Ana. This other world the author has created is intriguing and I found myself wanting to know more about it as I flipped through the pages. I fell in love with Calix and thought that the moments he shared with Ana were wonderfully intense. Both he and Kellin had such a strong presence throughout this book and I could really feel how much they cared for Ana. Although I was obsessing over Calix, there were many moments I thought Kellin was just as sweet. The ending left me hungry for more and I look forward to the next installment from this great author!

This being the debut novel for this author, I had no preconceived and was only interested in her ability to tell a story. This one began with a typical pretty girl attending her senior year in high school. But when she started experiencing supernatural changes, things truly got interesting. With fire coming from her palms at inopportune times and a shadow seemingly stalking her through her mirror, her last year of school has become something much more than typical.

There were moments when I wondered how the two guys, who were supposed to be Ana’s friends, could allow Ana to be treated the way she was by the stuck up girls they were dating. And I found it strange that she would put up with any of them acting the way they did. The actions of Kellin and Calix were more immature than I would have expected for their age. But I have to remember that I am simply a spectator, looking at the story from the outside. I expect the author to give us the insight we need to understand the way things unfold. Though she could make her reasoning a bit clearer, I think she is on the right track, and I can see her potential for improvement as the series develops.

Ana proves to be someone much more unique than she thought, and though I was a little put off by her whining and crying at the drop of a hat, I understood that she was under duress the majority of the novel. I’m not sure how I would have reacted had I learned the things about myself that she learned in the short time she had to become aware of her abilities. And I do understand her need to protect herself and others from her “gifts.” With the nightmares and the knowledge that she might be more dangerous than anyone understands, I can see how it might be difficult to figure out who she can trust and what to do with the waves of emotion she must have experienced.

I don’t claim to be an expert concerning the paranormal or the world of the fae, but I truly enjoyed the story, and especially the dark theme that was a thread throughout. I love an author who isn’t afraid to sacrifice characters we’ve grown fond of in order to take the story to its conclusion. Although this tale started a little slow, by the second half, I was on the edge of my seat, wondering which direction Ana would turn and where the knowledge of her true self would lead her. It ended in a cliff hanger that left me asking a myriad of questions. Where will Ana go now that she’s taken the action she has? What is to become of these two important men in her life? Will there be too much darkness to overcome, and what impact will her actions at the end of the book have on earth realm and the realm in which she belongs? I hope the author continues to write, because I’m sure that I’m not the only one who wants to know what happens next.

📖 My Thoughts

hmm...this story was okay. It didn't have the depth I'm used to reading when i read this author stories. I am looking at the timeline and i think this may have been one the first books they wrote as a "baby author" as some say. It actually did have the darker content that her books usually have and liked that a lot. It's honestly a driving factor in why i like her books so much.

I think my mini quarrel with this book is that i didn't really feel any depth to the characters or the world itself. the pacing is good, but the pacing with the actions of the characters didn't seem to mesh well which led to certain events happening and being unable to grasp the emotions or why characters were upset. tbh i am not sure if we love the mmc for him or if it's the fated pull they have to one another, so it will be interesting to see if that develops further. That could also be attributed to how the book may be a fast burn, but it felt a little too fast.

there are somethings and cliffy's we were left so i will be checking out the second book, just because this one missed the mark for me doesn't mean the second can't fix that.

⚠️ Triggers

physical assault, sexual harassment, bullying, violence, death

🏳️‍🌈 Representation

minor male character has a boyfriend

🌶️ Spice

i think it was pretty much fade to black, i remember some minor bits so that's why i gave this a 0.5.

📝 Special Notes

i am reading through this authors backlog, this another unfinished (expected to be finished hopefully in 2023), if i had to suggest an order to read the paranormal series, read this one first. it might has some dark elements but just off the first book, it's pretty light. when i finish the second and start the third then i could give a good reading order but i am confident in this one being first.

ONE OUTSTANDING JOURNEY!!!
Fickle fae! Reuss doesn't hesitate to lay it all on the line, bringing all the tears, cheers, heartache, revelations, humor and hard choices aplenty, rounding out the frills and feels, wrapping it up and letting it fly. Eliminating the lines and crushing boundaries, limitations are stretched and manipulated, blazing a path, booting it into overdrive, slamming this baby into a frenzy with astonishing results. Surprising happenstance and unsettling mishaps, swirl with the formidable trials and challenging tribulations, spinning alongside the deadly twists and wicked turns, putting our characters through their paces, drawing them closer than they could have ever imagined. Braided, bound and entangled, imparting the explosive ups and agonizing downs, grounding in it's simplicity and awe-inspiring in it's depth. Gratification rocks this little treasure, bringing it home with such intensity and precision, riding roughshod and imparting one block busting dynamo, fusing this little jewel together piece by piece. The characters, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits, blend and flow, transforming into genuinely charismatic personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and depictions creating a colorful backdrop that makes the storyline pop. Incredible job Reuss, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.

OMG

I really like this book. I usually prefer contemporary romances but I have read a bunch of paranormal romances as well and this one was different. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like it. It’s starts out all normal and if I wouldn’t have known it was a pnr I would have thought I was just reading a regular high school contemporary romance. Then weird stuff starts happening to Ana and a new boy comes to school. Eventually Calix (the new boy) tells her all about this crazy other world and she can’t help but believe him. I know it sound like every other pnr out there but it’s not. It’s also a love triangle between Ana, Calix, and Kellin (Ana’s friend for years). I usually hate love triangles because they stress me out, I much prefer RH or ménage romances if there is going to be more than one love interest. I don’t like worrying about who the girl is going to end up with. #whychoose But KG just wrote it so well and I love it (even though I’m still stressed at this point). I like Kellin but he can find someone else. Ana better end up with Calix or I will cry.

A prophecy foretold. Ana has loved her best friend Kellen since they met four years ago, but he sees her only as a friend and he has a girlfriend who is mean and spiteful and hates Ana. But this is her last year in highschool and soon she can escape to college and never have to be around these people ever again. Then a new student named Calix starts. He’s hot, snarky, full of himself, but seems to want to help her when the people around her attack her. As she grows closer to him Kellen starts acting differently towards her. He hints that he has feelings for her and then he betrays her. Now the only one she can count on is Calix but what she doesn’t know is that her entire life has been a lie and she is part of a prophecy. And factions she never knew about have different interest in her. To save her, use her, or kill her. And which factions do Kellen and Calix belong to? Okay, about this book. I did not like Ana.. She was too innocent and boring for my taste.. and the love triangle, omg, no thank you...

The writing was okay, the character development was horrible, and it was just really childlike.. Ana is a 17, nearly 18 year old girl, senior in high school, but has the personality of a 13 year old girl.. she is in love with her best guy friend, but never tells him, and he is in love with her, but dates her bully??? How stupid is this guy?? And then Calix.. A bad boy with a heart of gold, but he is a monster... And how is it possible that Ana only figured out who he was in the last chapter??? I figured it out the moment she had the first vision!!

All in all, it's not my kind of book. If you are a 15 year old girl, looking for something like all the other YA fantasy books, this is for you, if you are in your 20's, do not start this, it is just a major disappointment...

The book was hands down amazing! Nothing is as it 1st seems.

Ana is a normal teenage girl but is she? Beautiful but never really have dated much and has a huge crush on guy friend Kellin. He is dating the queen B of the school who is horrible to Ana because everyone can tell Kellin has feelings for Ana as well.

The closer it gets to Ana's 18th bday the more her powers started to come out. Freaking out she tries to hide it. To make things worst the hot sexy new guy Calix just knows how to push her buttons.

When things start getting pretty bad Ana only has Calix to turn to. But he is holding a secret of his own.

Want Fae, magic and other worlds? Slow burn dark romance? Then read this book!

Just be prepared for the ending!!!

With this book, I am lost in what to say other than wow, I really liked the book and want to read the next one since this one left off on a big cliffhanger. All I can really say is that Ana was really naive and really blind especially when everything was in front her that could have helped her except she refused open her eyes and communicate with the right people. Yet the same time book sucked me in and I just couldn't put it down.

It's dark. It's angsty. It's soulful. I have no words to describe this book. It's all I love in a paranormal story and more. If you're familiar with K.G. Reuss's books, you know what I'm talking about. Amazing characters, excellent storyline, unexpected plot twists and a flawless narrative. The ending left me hanging (of course it did, it's a cliffhanger) and I'm breathlessly waiting for the next book in the series!

Ana is a 17-year-old high school girl who is starting to realize she is different, coming into some interesting powers that she can’t really control, and that other people are not always what they seem to be. When a night out concludes with shadowy creatures attacking Ana, and Calix, the new guy at school, stepping in to save her life, Ana realizes Calix is one of those who is much more than he seems, as is Kellin.

Will she find the answers to her questions? Will she discover who and what she is?

I loved this book! It was a quick read, but the story was still a full one. The romance was great, and the two main characters had amazing chemistry. My only "complaint" is that Kellin and Ana's relationship was not it for me, especially with what he did to her. Mel and Ana was kind of a "meh" for me too, because they didn't really talk about much, other than boys. That being said, the twist at the end was very surprising and done really well. I didn't even suspect it! I thought it was going to be kind of like a forbidden romance.

This story has a complexity that is subtle but effective. The characters are interesting though I was troubled by some of their actions towards her. Add it the supernatural vibe and the complications that emerge from that and the story moves into a whole other realm. Great story. I look forward to reading more.

Bloody adorable book. There's nothing better than a soulful teenage love story with a supernatural twist, and this one is a page-turner. Although I should take at least one star away because K.G. keeps starting new series without giving us the second book in the series... hear me K.G? Where's my sequel to Dead Silence? C'mon man! ;)

Dark, deep and thrilling this book keeps you guessing till a great extent. However some things are easily guessed, some connections quite apparent while others totally blind sight you.

This book ends at a cliff hanger of sorts.
