The Life of John Conrad Weiser, the German Pioneer, Patriot, and Patron of Two Races

Rate this book
Conrad Weiser ( 1696 – 1760), born Johann Conrad Weiser, Jr., was a Pennsylvania German (a.k.a., Pennsylvania Dutch) pioneer, interpreter and effective diplomat between the Pennsylvania Colony and Native Americans. He was a farmer, soldier, monk, tanner and judge. He contributed as an emissary in councils between Native Americans and the colonies, especially Pennsylvania, during the 18th century's tensions of the French and Indian War (Seven Years' War).

For many years, Weiser helped to keep the powerful Iroquois allied with the British as opposed to the French. This important service contributed to the continued survival of the British colonies and the eventual victory of the British over the French in the French and Indian Wars.

I just finished reading this book about John Conrad Weiser because he is my 8 time Great Grandfather. It was difficult reading but I enjoyed learning about his courage and prestigious position as a peacemaker, at the time of the French and Indian War. He endured many hardships but was praised by George Washington when he stood by Weiser's grave and said, “This departed man rendered many services to his country in a difficult period, and posterity will not forget him.”
It's humbling to know my Great Grandfather worked along side Benjamin Franklin, William Penn and George Washington. Weiser was commissioned to interpret between the Indians and whites during negotiations. When Weiser turned 14, he lived with the Mohawk's for 8 months, learning their language and customs. During that time, he was prepared to serve as a benefactor between two races for a period of fifty years. It was providential that his stay with the Mohawks prepared him invaluable, just as Joseph was used by God to negotiate between the Israelites and Egyptians. He was a religious man and wrote hymns, preached and spoke at funerals. http://www.conradweiserhomestead.org/
