First, the disclaimer. "I was provided a free paperback copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, I was very surprised by this book. Maybe my brain read more into the title than what was intended, but I thought maybe it was a devotional and would be a 'deep' study of the word. Maybe I should've read the back cover copy before I jumped!

OK, so now that we got failed expectations out of the way I will review it on what it is instead of what it is not. :) Ms. Suk is a retreat junkie by her own admittance. She goes to multiples ones a year. And when none is scheduled when she wants one... well, why not? Her first unscheduled retreat was at a convent. Cool! But she was a bit put out by the lack of a schedule. I'm supposed to do what when? and where? How?

Ms. Suk also seems a very organized type, and having a lack of a planned itinerary to follow made her plan her own. Once she was satisfied, she spend a lot of time in the word, resting and relaxing.

Later, Ms. Suk invited a friend to go on an unscheduled retreat with her to a bed and breakfast. Her friend came armed with bubble bath and little else, and her retreat focused on pampering herself the entire time. Ms. Suk was a bit judgmental at first, (she admitted it) but came to realize that was exactly what her friend--a busy mom--needed.

I am not a retreat junkie. My idea of a retreat is Sunday evenings after church services are done and enjoying a book, a bubble bath, time in the word, maybe a nap, and NOT working. I don't even fix dinner. You're on your own Sunday evening. I need those few hours of quiet a week. I have five children and am a pastors wife and I homeschool, and the thought of all the work that would have to go into me leaving home for a couple days is -- wow, overwhelming. And then all the catchup work when I get home. And being in a strange, unfamiliar to me place? No. Just no. Clearly I am not the intended audience for this book.

If you are a retreat junkie, this is hands down a book you must have to help you plan your own retreat--complete with an already planned for you itinerary. Ms. Suk is very detailed and this book will save you a lot of stress work. She does it all except book the facility and pack your things.

Getaway with God is a practical, easy-to-read resource for anyone who longs to spend specific time “hanging out with the One who knows you better than anyone else and loves you like crazy.“

Letitia Suk lays out the reasons personal retreats are so vital, and then she tells us exactly how to go about having one! Not only do we learn applicable truths (I picked up several gems of practical spiritual truth for my own life in the first few chapters) but we also are given the tools so that we know what to do with what we’ve just learned.

She addresses common questions/details such as “Where do I go?”, how to get ready for a personal retreat, silence?, fasting?, friends?, and options for people who can’t afford to travel/stay anywhere. Suk also discusses the types of personal retreats (restorative, listening, goal-planning) and elaborates on the details of proceeding with each one.

Bottom Line: Whether you can only get away for the day or the weekend … or if you want to steal away for a longer 5-day retreat, Getaway with God by Letitia Suk gives you the instructions to accomplish this. In addition to the “how to” guide, helpful resources and personal insight are included. She also gives some interesting insights into the concept of “Sabbath” that I’ve been pondering since reading that chapter. The writing style is conversational and soothing and the book will leave you craving time away to deepen your walk with Jesus.

In the world today it seems like women have busy schedules. There are meetings to attend, errands to run, chores to get through and a family to take care of. When was the last time you took a day for yourself? How long has it been since you and God shared a meaningful talk or spent time in His presence? For me I seem to always have something I need to do, but it's time for each of us to relax and have a "me and God" time. I have gone to my share of retreats. They are fun and there is always great teachings and fellowship. But I always feel kinda let down when I leave . It feels like I wasn't really there totally because I couldn't concentrate.

I loved when the author says, " A retreat beckons you to snuggle up with God and let him love on you." That is exactly what I need. I want one on one time with God. I loved the idea of finding a quaint little bed and breakfast to use as a personal retreat. There is no hustle and bustle there, no schedules and you are left to yourself to enjoy the peace and quiet. The author includes a list of helpful ways to get ready for your retreat and even includes what to pack for your trip. Now it's up to us to move forward and prepare for the retreat.

There are different retreats that will meet your needs. Maybe you just want to stay in your room and rest and study a particular scripture. For others it might be to take a walk in the country and enjoy the beauty that He made. Whatever you decide, make it fit your needs so you can get the full benefits of a personal retreat. The more I read the book the more I felt the promoting of the Lord . I have longed to get away to just be by myself for awhile. I know I need to get back on track and deepen my relationship with God. The book is very useful and guided me through steps to make my desire come true. I encourage you ladies to take that first step. It's time to get refreshed, renewed and "Getaway with God."

" You too have a future that only God can see, and He invites you to have a hand in shaping it."

Getaway with God is a really practical guide to making a personal retreat happen. It's basically a guide for creating your own retreat. The first section deals with the "whys" of taking a retreat and tells how to do a day or weekend retreat. The second section goes into greater detail as it lays out a possible 5-day retreat.

Throughout the book, there are quote sections with real women's experiences. Each section goes with whatever Suk was just discussing, and while I found these women's perspectives to be helpful, it also became distracting. I think this is more due to the formatting of the book than anything else. Formatting usually isn't something I'd comment on in a review, but in this case, it really detracted from the book. This is because as Suk would wrap up one point and head into the next, she would often preview what was to come. But then a quote section would follow that preview, and after I read the quotes, I had forgotten how the new section connected to the previous one, so I'd have to go back and reread the end of the previous section.

Despite the formatting issues, I found the book to be very helpful, and I'm now convinced of the importance of going on a personal retreat. I'm sure I'll be pulling out this book when I do.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I think I was expecting something different, something I could do more day to day from this book. The book instead is how to make time in your life to go away to a retreat center (a few links are listed in the last appendix). The author lists the different types of retreats there are: one day, multiday, weekend, planning, restorative, or listening. Planning by far was probably the one more like me, however, I plan so much in my daily life as it is, I would truly need more listening, and learning type retreat. She also lists things to take for your retreat, whether to fast or not, silence or not.
The author provides so much as far as what is expected, what you can expect, this really is a book for a retreat beginner, a total newbie, or it could be for someone who is ready to step out on their own and do their own retreat instead of tagging along with the women's group at the church.
If you are ready to take that step and go on your own, this book is indispensable.

Suk compares a retreat to "snuggling up to God and letting Him love on you." (p.21) And it isn`t as daunting as you might think with this book as your guide. It is really well laid out with lots of practical advice and plenty of options since one size doesn`t fit all when it comes to personal retreats.

Easy-to-read and full of great tips, it`s clear the author wants women to succeed in their own personal `spiritual spa` day. And she`s practical too, providing step-by-step guides to different kinds of retreats. There`s a great Inductive Bible Study example that I`m going to incorporate into my daily scripture study, retreat or no retreat! An uplifting, doable guide to help any woman draw deeper into relationship with God.

My thanks to Litfuse Publicity Group and Kregel Publications for providing me with a copy of this book.

This book is a wonderful resource for anyone wondering about the what, why, and how of personal spiritual retreats. What are they, why should you go on one, and you how should you go about planning it? There are descriptions of different kinds of retreats, including detailed exercises in the appendix that you can use if you need a complete activity plan. I liked hearing the quotes from different women about heir experiences on retreat: it made it clear that there is no one right way to do it. With this book in your library, you have everything you need to plan your own retreat or even one for a group! I was pleased to have the chance to read an advance review copy of the book. Highly recommended.

When I started this book, it felt like I was sitting down with a girlfriend and she was telling me about her experience with retreats. The book then went on to give lots of helpful insights into things to think about and do when you go for a retreat. The book talks about short retreats (partial day, day or two days), keeping the Sabbath, and then longer retreats. There is a lot of helpful information conveyed in a friendly warm way. One of the highlights - when you finish the book and are ready to go on a retreat, there is a list of ways to find a retreat center by you. I looked right away!

Getaway with God: The Everywoman's Guide to Personal Retreat by Letitia Suk is a no-nonsense guide to do just that: go away on a personal retreat with just yourself and God. When I first picked up this book, I thought it was going to be a more esoteric guide to "getting away" with God; ie, carving time into your daily schedule to relax and experience God. However, this is an action plan to go on an outside retreat with God. The back cover reads:

"What if a simple day away could transform your life?

Does spending time with God sound like just one more thing to check off an ever-increasing to-do list? How are you supposed to fit in anything that threatens to be more time-consuming? Too often there's simply no room to experience the intimacy, grace, and peace that God offers us.

Getaway with God does more than invite you to step away from life's pressures to take a personal retreat. It shows you exactly why you must--for your sake and for your family's.

With grace and warmth, Letitia Suk provides step-by-step guidance and the necessary tools to enable any woman on any budget to plan time away, whether it's a quick, half-day break or a weeklong time of restoration. You'll find detailed steps for preparation, including descriptions of different kinds of retreats and how to choose the best one for you, and you'll learn ways to bring the renewal you experience home with you. Practical appendixes identify retreat centers nationwide and provide exercises and prayers to kick-start your getaway with God.

No matter what your season in life, the time for retreat is now!

"Getaway with God is a gem!"
--Karen Burton Mains, author of Open Heart, Open Home, director of Hungry Souls"

Getaway with God is a short book and a quick read (just about 150 pages), but it packs a punch in its pages. Letitia has a soothing yet straightforward writing style that is easy and enjoyable to read. I've never gone on any type of solo retreat (just a yearly marriage retreat with my church), but this book makes me want to break out of my box, so to speak, and give it a try. I've been feeling a bit dry and dull in my relationship with God lately, and this seems to be the prescription. The book provides a day-by-day, step-by-step plan to personalizing and customizing your own person retreat with God. It also includes several appendices including a selection of retreat exercises, a section on how to approach prayer, several different prayer models, designing a group retreat, and a collection of links to help you find a retreat center in your local area. I highly recommend this book to any Christian woman longing for a little alone time with God, or any woman who is curious about what a personal retreat is, what it looks like, and how it works.

We need to be spiritually recharged from time to time. We don't have to wait for that annual retreat the church offers. Suk encourages us to regularly plan our own times of spiritual restoration.

Suk tells her story of participating in retreats and gives excellent suggestions for crafting our own. She gives step by step suggestions on how to design and experience a personal spiritual retreat. She explains why we need them, where to go (out of the house), and how to prepare for it. She includes different kinds of retreats and what to do at them.

Suk has such a wide variety of ideas that this book could be used by anyone wanting to experience a personal retreat. She has suggestions for spiritual content, like character studies, Lectio Divina, goal setting, etc. She includes instructions on silence, food, creating schedules, seeking spiritual direction, and more. Her suggested plans cover retreats lasting one day to several days.

I appreciate Suk distinguishing the typical group retreat from the ones she suggests. Group retreats are often more about speakers and social interaction than having time alone with God. Her suggestions for personal retreats are more what I have had in mind for personal renewal. I like her suggestions of reviewing spiritual milestones, identifying stuck points, and looking to the future. She has included a number of questions to ask ourselves. They would also be good questions for an annual review of where we are in life.

I also like Suk encouraging readers to experience Sabbath, creating a rhythm of renewal. That could be a weekly time of spiritual restoration we can all experience. Suk also answers a number of questions readers might have about personal spiritual retreats.

This is a good book for people who have wanted to go on a spiritual retreat and did not know how to make it happen. With practical suggestions for getaways of different lengths and places, it is a great resource. Suk writes that she has “offered a buffet of ideas on how to get away with God.” (141) I agree. There are so many possibilities included in this book, every person desiring time away with God will find resources here.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through Litfuse. My comments are an independent and honest review.

`Getaway with God` is a Christian Life, Spiritual Retreat book written by author Letitia Suk. Letitia Suk is a Retreat Leader, Personal Life Coach, Hospital Chaplain and Blogger (www.hopeforthebest.org). She enjoys speaking and writing to women of all ages.

A getaway with God is a day, a morning, evening, or overnighter spent alone with Jesus and feeling His love. It is highly recommended the reader get away from home and household duties and get alone with just them and God.There are several links at the back of the book to websites that can help the reader find the right getaway for them. There is also a list of what to bring in chapter two. The author covers the subject adequately. The approach to the subject is descriptive.

The author supports her argument of having a personal retreat by sharing her own retreats and by giving plentiful tips on why the reader needs a personal retreat. I do find the evidence convincing. I can think of ways I could have a personal retreat. For example, a dear friend of mine has a Bed & Breakfast nearby that is quiet and secluded. I could also go to our local Botanical Gardens for a morning or evening. This is the first book I have read on having a personal retreat.

I recommend this book to young mom's, empty-nesters and anyone with a chaotic lifestyle. One style doesn't fit all. Be in prayer about your retreat before you go and ask others to pray before, during, and after.

Cue Letitia Suk’s book, “Getaway with God: The Everywoman’s Guide to Personal Retreat.” This book centers around how to take time away to reconnect with God and refresh yourself.

Letitia teaches the importance of retreating and just why it’s essential to do so. I loved how she stresses that every woman can take a retreat of some sort, no matter what season of life she’s in. As a Mama to two little men, this was so encouraging! The author even gives you ideas for retreats to fit your situation and personality. She also gives you a list of things to take on your retreat, which is wonderful if you’re planning your first retreat.

I personally wouldn’t know exactly what to do during a personal retreat, so I was grateful for the schedules that Letitia includes. They’re very detailed and give so many great ideas about how to balance your time. Letitia basically holds your hand as you prepare to go on your first retreat! I love her easy way of writing, it makes you feel like she is right there with you.

The author has obviously done this a few times and is very knowledgeable about this topic, which means you can easily trust her advice for getting the most out of your retreat. I closed this book with a deeper longing to reconnect with God and the tools needed to get there. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a way to relax intentionally.

Is it possible for one day to totally change your life? Yes, if that day is spent alone with God, instead of God just being part of your to-do list. Suk’s latest is designed to encourage the reader to take a personal retreat to spend time with God. It is a step-by-step guide to help you plan your trip, which could be from a few hours to a few weeks. It doesn’t have to be long, but it should be a time away from the daily demands so that the focus can be on strengthening a relationship with God.

Suk shares personal experiences to help the reader determine the best way to plan their own retreat. While this book is titled in a way to appeal to women, men could benefit from this, as well. The book does not provide a one-size-fits-all approach. Relevant scripture is woven throughout. Numerous resources are provided, including a sample schedule for a retreat and feedback from other women. If you are looking for way to recharge, this just might be the book for you.

While this book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. It is well-organized and detailed and likely to be valuable for those looking for a spiritual retreat.

Our lives are lived on the run, mountains of things to do, miles long lists to accomplish. But each of us need some time alone to regroup and refresh our souls. The author has been taking private retreats for almost forty years and offers her insights into how to make it happen and also make it more meaningful. Each chapter has step-by-step instructions, thoughts from other women on personal retreats, ideas for each type of person, and stories from the author and her friend's personal experiences.

The book reads like a chat with a friend, and while informational in style, is a easy and enjoyable book to read. I was impressed with the wealth of information she was able to share in a short space without making me feel overwhelmed or bored. She shared different types of retreats, ideas on how to dig deeper into the Bible, goal setting, and the importance of a Sabbath rest. The author was able to take a concept that could sound overwhelming to set up and made it doable. She really impressed upon the reader the importance and then addressed any concerns or roadblocks that might come up. It was well written and something I think every woman should take the time to read.

Reading this book is like sitting down with a good friend and discussing all God has done in our lives. I love how the author is so open and honest and shares from her heart.

Letitia shares how important it is for us to have Spiritual retreats with God. Our lives can get so busy, complicated and in a rut that we tend to forget how important it is to have this time with the Lord. She shares her own personal experiences, and the experiences of other women, as they had their own retreats with God.

I really liked how she gives us guidance on how to go on our own retreat. Whether for a day or two or a week, she gives us the guidance for creating our own retreat. She emphasizes that investing time to get away with the Lord is not an indulgence but a necessity and we will be hugely blessed by it.

I really liked this book and am planning on doing my own retreat. This book gives you a deep desire to spend time with God alone. I really love this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

OK, so first the disclaimer. I've known Tish Suk for a long time and learn from her example of gentle faith and service. I reviewed an advance copy of the book and loved it. But this isn't just about supporting a friend. It's about an important book that every woman needs. I think it's so important that I just purchased a bunch at full price to give to friends for Christmas.

As women, we can get so caught up in taking care of others and our to-do list that we lose track of nurturing the most important relationship of all: the one between God and ourselves. This book is a beautiful nudge to say yes to the Lord’s invitation to come with Him to a quiet place. Letitia provides step-by-step instructions to those who desire them, but also encourages women to find their own retreat path. She also shares her own journey with humility and grace. It’s a book any woman at any stage of life or spirituality will learn from… and savor.

This book was a bit different then I expected. I guess I was thinking it would be more about how you can getaway with God daily during your quiet time and this book is really an outline for anyone who wants to actually take a day or more and getaway from the hustle and bustle of your regular routine.

With that new mindset this book does what it sets out to do. Letitia gives you real ways you can have your own spiritual retreat on any type of budget. She makes an excellent point when saying we make time and money for those things we really want to do. If you really want to make it happen you will find a way.

She shares about her own personal journey and how she has done retreats and gives several ideas for how you can make your own happen.

If you are wanting to getaway with God and have some quiet time away from your own home Letitia will walk you through that in this book.

This is a great read for anyone wishing to participate in a little soul care. God is always inviting each of us to "Come away!" with Him on a regular basis, and in this little tome Tish has offered practical and inspiring tools to help us do just that very thing - whether we are stealing away for an afternoon, a full day, a weekend, or a more lengthy time to pursue God and His desires for us. Chock full of very handy suggestions, the book steers the reader through various motivations and desires, suggested schedules and other "how-to's" that whet the appetite to jump in and "get away". My favorite section was Tish's recounting of her first five day "Life-Review Retreat" - she explained how she did it, how she met God there, and what she received from Him. Guaranteed, by the close of the last page, you'll be itching for some personal retreat time of your own!

Getaway with God is full of great information on how to create a personal retreat. The author is experienced and offers practical advice. I like that she gives different versions and types of retreats. She shares good information for everything from a few hours of quiet to a full five days away from everything. She gives guidance on what to take and ways to focus on God. One of the things I would enjoy is getting out and walking in nature and having someone else cook for me. Letitia shares about her own experiences with retreat and what worked and what didn't. If you're planning a personal retreat or hope for one in the future this is the perfect book. This would also be a great addition to a library. I received this book free from Litfuse.

Reading "Getaway with God" made me feel like I was having coffee with an old friend. This book is written in such a way that it just pulls you in. Letitia's ideas are very helpful and a is a wonderful guide. "Getaway with God" serves as a stepping stone to help women take personal time for a retreat of their own.

I really like that there is a reference in the back of the of the book on places to go to for a retreat, as well as why you should take time for a personal retreat. This is a wonderful book & I suggest it to all women.

The idea of a private retreat can be terrifying - What do I do with uninterrupted time with Jesus? 8 or 24 whole hours?

This book is a great guide from someone who has done years of personal retreats. Suk answers the most basic questions and provides an outline and guidelines for "Should I take others along?" "Should it be silent?" "How should I spend that time?"

I love that she doesn't stop at an 8 hour (work day length) retreat - she provides ideas for the where and when and how for busy moms (trade childcare, trade houses, borrow someone's home while they're at work); for an overnight retreat, and also for a five day retreat.

Essentially it's a very practical tool, and a very quick read, that will help you go from "Where do I start" to "I'm excited about doing this!"

Getaway with God is a book I honestly had no clue if I would like it or not. If you are into retreats, or want to create a retreat this would be the best book for you , but if you like me and like devotionals, and short but sweet studies you can do in 5 min. or so, then this is not the right book for you. Getaway with God is 160 pages of ideas for you and your family to do retreats together to come closer in Christ. I will not lie, I had a hard time getting into this book and personally not my kind of book. I will tell you this much it was written I feel very well for people who like these kind of books .

If you've ever dreamed of spending time alone with God, Letitia Suk will tell you how you can make this happen in her new book Getaway with God: Everywoman's Guide to Personal Retreat. From taking an afternoon off to spending an extended time away, Letitia will walk you through the types of retreats, how to focus your time, and what to expect. In her conversational tone, you will feel like you are sitting with her at her kitchen table having a cup of tea and sharing secrets with a friend.

Getaway with God is a delightful read. Once you start, you won't want to put it down. Like a cup of tea, it's good to the last drop. I can't wait to plan my first personal retreat in 2017.

I love this book! Tish's writing is clear and organized, while remaining engaging and genuine. Her deep faith shines though her words encouraging us to getaway with God but never guilting us into it. I took along my advanced copy on an impromptu getaway of my own and loved her fresh tips and insights and her wonderful resources. I would highly recommend this book whether personal retreats are a new experience for you or a regular part of your faith journey.

Getaway with God is a book aimed at women, to take some time out of our busy schedules and spend it with God. Whether you can carve out only a few hours, a day, a weekend or perhaps a full week, this book will guide you and provide tools to help you get the most out of your retreat.

Letitia starts by explaining her own journey, from acknowledging the need for a retreat, to actually going on it. She carefully explains the different type of retreats, and emphasises that everybody is different so not to worry if your personal plan is different. There’s also a chapter on the Sabbath, and the benefit of treating the Sabbath as time to spend focussing on God – something I need to remember when I’m running around after the children.
The second section of the book describes in detail a plan for a 5-day retreat, intertwined with remembrances from Letitia’s journal of her experience.

As someone who doesn’t spend as much time in my relationship with God as perhaps I should, this was well-worth the read. It has made me want to go on a retreat with God (which obviously was the point) but also make more of a concerted effort reading the Bible and praying. I do read through the Bible yearly already, but if I’ve got a spare 30min then focussing on a short passage and actually allowing God the time to talk to me is a positive change.
