Rate this book
In this book and the companion videos, Haun shows you step by step all the techniques he uses to frame a basic house, from laying down the sills to cutting the rafters. You'll learn about:
-- Cutting and installing posts and girders
-- Joisting and sheathing floors
-- Laying out, cutting, assembling and raising walls
-- Framing gable roofs, hips, and valleys, and truss roofs
-- Building various types of stairs

There is also an opening chapter on tools, plans, codes, permits, lumber, and materials, and additional information throughout the book on safety and site-built tools.

This book is nothing less than a complete course in basic framing, with practical information about how to organize tasks, streamline procedures and handle tools and materials efficiently.

You should really watch the videos that go with this book first (this edition only mentions that they exist but makes no effort to make them available, so: 1, 2, 3), partly because they demonstrate certain things more clearly, but mostly so you can read the book in Larry Haun's voice, which makes everything better. The book covers everything the videos do, and provides more information on framing rooves and building stairs, as promised.
If you're used to European construction, this book might give you the impression that American houses are just slightly fancy sheds. This is true in most parts of the country. If you want to build a really solid shed, though, there's really no better guide.

This an excellent resource if your planning any DIY construction projects. If you’ve framed houses before this a great refresher. He has some helpful speed enhancing tips that I’m sure many professional framers could find helpful.

Great read to understand the basics of framing and good old fashioned carpentry. There is a YouTube series which covers every portion of the book as well.

Did not finish entirely, but willing to mark as read. Very good resource, though somewhat dated.
