Phonology and Grammar of Modern West Frisian: With Phonetic Texts and Glossary

Rate this book
Excerpt from Phonology and Grammar of Modern West Frisian: With Phonetic d104s and Glossary
ON the publication of this book, it is a pleasant duty for me to express my sincere thanks, in the first place to the Philological Society for having considered it Worthy of inclusion among its issues, and in the second place to the authorities of the Clarendon Press for the excellent manner in which it has been printed.
But most of all I feel indebted to Dr. W. A. Craigie, President of the Philological Society, whose advice and assistance have made the publication of this work possible. He has revised the English of my manuscript, and has translated into English such Frisian words as are explained in the Phonology and Grammar. And lastly he has kindly lent a helping hand in the correction of the proof-sheets.

Giving this a 3.25/5, for now!

I think if you have an interest in linguistics and especially of Germanic languages, this is a good read. It is a grammar book and not a language learning book necessarily so you’ll actually learn quite a bit of HOW modern Frisian is structured, at the time of the writing of course, though I suspect it shouldn’t have changed THAT much since the release.

Sadly, I won’t remember too much of what I read as there weren’t necessarily like practice/exercises, nor did I go out of my way to reinforce it. I also don’t have my IPA familiarized nor all of the general linguistics concepts either. If you have a good solid understanding of the IPA, you can probably get more out of it than me. In any case though, it is quite a valuable resource for anyone interested in what I mentioned above. I also skipped over the Frisian text section at the end as there were no translations to compare it to.

Maybe will revisit in the future should I seriously dive into Frisian, but for now, cool first pass in learning about English’s sister language.

Sipma's book is excellent for the Frisian student and the one who wonders about English's long lost cousins, the Frisian languages. You will find strange similarities among the language of England and the language of Fries in this grammar study. Sipma provided clear and understandable definitions to the grammar and his grammar study is certainly useful to the student.
