I liked this book. My kids not so much. Of course, my kids have yet to have a pet whereas I grew up with them (to include a few dogs.) Unlike some of the other books from my childhood this one was a miss in regards to my 6.5, 8, 10, and 11 year old kiddos.

The book, "Fudge", is simplistic. Dialogue heavy with descriptions that are lacking and lackluster when present.

In my opinion, this book would be better served as a 4th grade independent read rather than a read aloud.

My oldest boy child stayed with me throughout the entire book but disliked the ending. Although ending on a happy note, my son felt there wasn't enough story told. "What was the point [of this book] mom?"

The point? Being responsible has the potential to earn you your just rewards. (There were a few other layers at play; but, for the most part, I believe that's this book's intended take away.)

To my kids this book would've gotten a two star rating. In their eyes it was just okay. However, as an adult, I'm able to appreciate certain things from this book differently and I stand by my 3 star rating. I liked it. No more, no less. Plain and simple much like this book itself.

This book won some awards, so I picked it off the shelf at the library. Isaac seemed to enjoy it, but it was just okay for me. A 10 year old convinces his parents to get a dog and then the mom finds out she's having twin babies so the boy almost doesn't get his dog. I did like that it portrayed how much work dogs are. And I'm thankful that Isaac wasn't begging me for a dog too after reading it. :)

Fudge is the runt of a neighbor’s litter of dogs. When they are naming all the dogs, they want to name him something related to the word “small.”

“Chad shook his head. In the end he named the puppy Fudge. "Fudge because she is fudgy brown," he explained. "And because everyone likes fudge brownies.”

Chad’s mother is pregnant and due soon, and unable to take care of a puppy. Chad works a deal with his parents to take Fudge on a trial, to see how well he can take care of Fudge on his own.

Fudge, by Charlotte Towner Graeber was amazing. I felt very lucky when Chad got to keep Fudge. Fudge was a brown cute little dog that Chad really enjoyed. She was a puppy from Chad's neighbors house they were going to sell. (The neighbors were the Gracia's.) They also had ten other puppies they were going to sell. The puppies came from a dog named Biggie that the Gracia's had. When I finished the book, I wanted to read it over again because it was so real. I felt like I was Chad doing the things in the book. I giggled to myself when Chad told Leslie to watch over Fudge while he was going to the circus because when he got back, Leslie told him he had to pay $4.00. But he payed three. As I was reading through the book, I was begging it to say that Chad got to keep Fudge and turned out I was right. I thought this was one of the most amazing books that I read.

My 5th grade daughter asked me to read this to help with her book report. She really enjoyed it, but she loves dogs. I thought it was ok, but kept thinking this was the type of book I disliked reading in grade school. Still, it did impart a good lesson about responsibility. There are worse things to read in Elementary School.
