HiA stirring biography of D.L.Moody-one of the world's great evangelists. His beginning was simple: living on a farm in Northfield connecticut and his career path was of a salesman in chicago. But when he was saved, God used him for revival in America, and throughout Great Britain. Before she 30 he had preached to the thousands and saw many souls come to Christ. He influenced many men such as Henry Drummond, and C.T.Studd, as well as the "Cambridge five". He started a boys school, girls school and a college with a vision for Missions (today knows as Moody Bible institute). He also saw the start of Moody Press with his sermons published. Sankey who was with him for a good many years also had a great passion and his hymns were published. Moody's life was a passion to reach the lost and he was just ablaze for the Lord. What a great testimony to ready, and an inspiration still today with a reminder to not waste our lives!

Love this book - this man - and the kind of Christianity he represents! We forget what a larger than life character he was (in every way!) and how God used him to bring countless thousands to Christ and challenged many thousands more to live wholeheartedly for Christ.

Some great stories in this book. It's a little dated in it's style of writing but I found that was soon forgotten once the story got underway.

So if you want to be encouraged and challenged - if you want to laugh and cry - if you want to touch the movement of the spirit of God in the church of the late 1800's - this is the book for you ... !

It is great when one is able to read a biography when it is not also a hagiography! This is the case with Pollock's 'D L Moody: Moody without Sankey.'

It took me a while to get used to the author's style, but once I did, I was able to see that it reflected the character of his subject!

This is certainly, within bounds, a 'warts and all' biography, but lacks any analytical aspect of Moody's theology vis a vis his contemporaries etc. However, what adds credibility to the substance is the direct access the author had to original sources, which is always something I look for.

All in all, a book well worth reading.

Loved this !

Although this biography was a slight departure from my current programme of autobiographies it nevertheless served to demonstrate the power of passion - in this instance a passion for people and a passion for Jesus.

DL Moody is normally associated with Sankey as a Christian travelling preacher of the late 1890's.

From humble beginning's he moved quickly into a successful business career. The principles learnt in commerce he applied to the fledgling YMCA and then into his preaching campaigns.

He was personally responsible for presenting to gospel in an attractive manner and a homely style to millions of people.

His passion for people's development led him to found a couple of schools and a regular biblical teaching convention.

This is a great read revealing the man, his mission and, most importantly, his great faith.

The material is great- what a man Moody was! Full of touching anecdotes and inspiring descriptions of the way Moody worked. Feel like I know and love Moody personally.

I hate the way Pollock writes though.

This was highly recommended, but I didn't find it particularly readable, enjoyable or encouraging. It was an adequate historical account of Moody's remarkable life, but Pollock wasn't able to unlock the sources of Moody's great energy and passion in a way that personally encouraged me as a reader.

Really wonderful. So much insight into his values and personality. And of course, his passion for Christ.
