Anne Rockwell brings us a cast of diverse characters in this lovely book showcasing an elementary school’s celebration of Valentine’s Day. The students miss their classmate, who returned to Japan. They all decide to make her special Valentine’s cards which reflect their interactions with her. Mrs. Madoff and Mr. Siscoe take a walking class trip to the post office and send an envelope full of the students’ creations to Japan. When she receives her package, the little girl is delighted and sends origami Valentine’s back to her classmates.

As the class makes Valentine's Day cards for their friend Michiko, now far away in Japan, they remember all the fun things they did together. Valentine's Day by Anne Rockwell is a school story about remembering friends and the special things you do together on a special day about love and friendship.

Used for "Hearts-A-Beating" storytime-February, 2010.

I'd forgotten about this book. In my undergraduate children's literature class, we had to do a group project for Valentine's Day. This was the book my group chose. And now I'm using it for school age story time.
