The author's first novel - a thriller on the attempt of a few men to counteract the danger when a saboteur sets off an explosion in one of the most powerful nuclear reactors in the world. 247 pp.
My first novel, 'The Sandman,' was about a saboteur assigned to destroy the nuclear reactor in Iran. I read a number of books for research, and this book by Harold King was one of them. It offered the sort of suspense, tense story I wanted for my own.
When one of the largest underground nuclear complexes in the U.S. suffers an explosion, all hell is about to break loose. Proteus is the Hal-9000 version for nuclear facilities, and controls much of the facility (if not all). When all the men are killed and the reactor begins spewing out radiation, the grim reality of sabotage sets in on those looking for answers.
Colonel Herbert, an army engineer struggling to save the reactor from total devastation, works diligently with intelligence officers searching for clues left by the saboteur so they can counter his actions. But when the President of the United States takes command of the situation, he inadvertantly increases the level of possible devastation by activating another bomb within the facility.... A bomb that could destroy the reactor and spew untold amounts of radiation threatening not only the United States, but the world.
This book is highly suspenseful, tense, and technical in details as to how an unsuspecting devastation could in fact cause mass destruction on our planet. I highly recommend it!
This is an exciting thriller that takes place in a nuclear power plant. A sudden catastrophic event causes a chain reaction that is fast-paced and gripping. I found this book hard to put down.
Surprisingly this book is out of print, even though it's up there with a Michael Crichton novel (similar to The Andromeda Strain) or an early Dan Brown novel (Digital Fortress). It had a made-for-TV movie in 1977 called Red Alert, which has some key changes but is otherwise similar in characters.
