Rachel will have to hide to keep the people that she loves safe before it is too late, but what will happen when these traffickers come looking for her?!!!
I loved the suspense in this book, but there was a little too much mushy-gushy romance, but I'm always a critical sourpuss when it comes to romance that seems too good to be true. Other than that, it was another exciting page-turner by HH that combined/connected stories and characters from her other books, which I LOVE when authors do that! Now, I'm onto the next one, Ring Of Fire. Already started it as soon as this one was finished! Bravo Heather, you definitely have a gift at capturing and keeping the readers' attention. I'll be sad when I finish all the books so hopefully you're creative genius in the works :)
I would have given this a better rating but the snowy between the main character and her paramour seemed at least to me what the author wanted in this book. That's too bad bad as this could of been a good book to read.
This book was amazing. I promise you will cry and you will laugh at time. This book open your eyes up to a lot of bad things that happen in this world.
Thank you to Heather Huffman for providing me with a copy to review.
I finished this book in a day, in one go. Okay, I took a break to have lunch but that's beside the point. Devil In Disguise is an amazing adult contemporary, with beautiful writing and an incredibly meaningful concept.
Initially, I was slightly apprehensive about reading this book, since I wasn't sure how heavy it was on the human trafficking part. I was glad to see that Heather doesn't go into the horrific details, and yet she still emphasizing the importance of human trafficking and slavery in our world.
Rachel Cooper is a reporter and America's sweetheart, but isn't on very good terms with her family. However, she does try to get involved in her sister's life. When Julia goes missing, Rachel's mom panics, and Rachel is shocked on hearing the news. She turns to Conrad, her ex-boyfriend whom she still loves. Over the course of the novel, she finds out dark secrets about him and learns a lot more about the human trafficking business.
Rachel is an awesome protagonist, with a strong will and a compassionate heart. She loves her job, and focuses on raising awareness about social issues like human trafficking. Imagine her shock when she is personally affected by this issue. As she says in the novel -
Like so many others, I shook my head in dismay at the stories circulating the media. I said it was sad. I said it was scary. I never expected it to show up on my back door.
She loves Julia a lot, and would do anything to save her. I love how motivational she is when Julia comes back scarred emotionally as well as physically. This is what she tells Julia -
“You can’t undo it, but you get to decide if it will make you bitter or if it’ll teach you to love better. Will it break you or forge you into something stronger?”
Rachel is smart and brave, and her courage is really admirable. She's a very likeable person, as you can see from this quote by her boss, Brian.
You have this amazing exuberance that is infectious. And when you smile, you have a way of making everyone in the room, or on the other side of the television screen, feel like it’s just you and them. People adore you, Rachel. People adore her. And of course, this includes the tall and handsome Conrad Langston, Rachel's old flame. Conrad has had a dark past, but Rachel is willing to overlook that because of his love for her, and his fierce desire to protect her and Julia. I loved Conrad! He was sweet, kind and strong, and he was always there for Rachel. The chemistry between these two characters was incredible. I loved these quotes about them -
Suddenly, they were back to that magical place where no one else in the world existed or mattered except Rachel and Conrad, two halves of a whole who’d found each other again. "I have sunshine in my world every time you smile. I’d move mountains to see that smile.” Conrad says the line above to Rachel, and it was so incredibly sweet! I loved the part where they finally admitted their love for each other. I mentally pumped my fist in the air. In my opinion Conrad and Rachel are perfect for each other and their witty banter throughout the novel added a lot of humour to an otherwise serious concept.
I gained a lot of knowledge about human trafficking in this book, and I knew it was prevalent in the middle-Eastern countries but I had no idea it had so much business in America. It broke my heart to hear about how children are kidnapped and subjected to horrific conditions and then sold as slaves. Most of these kids are found on Internet chat rooms. This just shows how careful you must be on the Internet.
Devil In Disguise is a perfect blend of suspense, romance and action, and it really teaches you a lot about relationships, family, and social issues. I loved the supporting characters in this novel, and my favourite would be Neena Russell, Conrad's sister. She herself has been through hell, and it was amazing how she bounced back from all of that. Heather Huffman has revisited characters from her previous books in Devil In Disguise, and Neena is one of them. I can't wait to read Neena's story in Jailbird! Veronica and Rick were great as well, and I loved how they're so cheerful even though they are under a lot of pressure. I would also love to read their story in Suddenly A Spy.
And of course, like almost all emotional and touching novels, there is a death. I won't say who, obviously, but it was quite significant and very tragic. My heart ached for the loss felt by the other characters, and I loved that they named a safe house after that character as an everlasting memory. Also, Rachel's speech to the media about human trafficking was amazing, and it's probably one of the best speeches I've read.
All in all, Devil In Disguise is a beautiful book and I recommend it to anyone who loves contemporary novels. This is a very moving and compelling novel, and trust me, you will probably shed a few tears as well!
It is rare that I read a book so remarkably well written that it actually moves me and I certainly didn’t expect to find that level of attachment to this book, but Devil in Disguise by Heather Huffman surpassed every and all expectations I could have possibly had for it. Not only did I adore the love story and re-connection of Rachel and Conrad, but the actual plot of the story was heart wrenching and compelling.
Huffan created a world that I immersed myself in, the good, the bad and the ugly, I couldn’t seem to take my nose out of this book. The relationship between Conrad and Rachel kept me entertained through the entire book. It was easy to see how much they cared about each other and the fact that they kept miscommunicating about how they felt and what they wanted was both amusing at points and sad.
I loved how they snarked at each other and how Conrad would egg Rachel on just to see her angry. I also really enjoyed how throughout the story we find out bit and pieces of what happened in their relationship the first time around and why the wound up breaking up. It’s nice to see all the pieces come
But what I think I love most about this story aside from the way it’s written is the stories between the different characters. I love how they all sort of have their own little redemption plots. Hm, redemption might not be the correct word, but you have a former pimp, a former prostitute, poor Conrad with his mountains of guilt (I totally just want to hug him) then there’s poor Julia and Neena, who both went through hell and are trying to heal.
Devil in Disguise is truly a unique blend of contemporary romance and modern day issues. I commend Huffman on not shying away from the darker issues and shining a light on the seedier side of life. It’s good to know that there are people out there who are trying to help end human trafficking. If you haven’t have Devil in Disguise I urge you to read it, not only will you gain some important knowledge, but you’ll enjoy a pretty epic love story.
I found myself really enjoying this book. I originally started it one morning planning to only read for a few minutes, but ended up reading almost half of it in just one sitting. The story has a flow about it that works well and allows the reader to relax and enjoy the rhythm as the characters unfold. The topic covered about human trafficking is not something that comes up in the books I read very often {if ever}, so I like that Heather has taken the approach of bringing awareness to the awful hidden world of trafficking through her stories.
Devil in Disguise is woven around the romance between Conrad and Rachel – about kindling their old flame and seeing if they have what it takes to survive as a couple, especially when things get tough and their world’s get turned upside down. The energy between them makes it clear that they have a spark worth putting the time into.
I was curious as to how in depth the details of trafficking would go, but Heather managed to bring it about as a front-runner topic without delving into too many details for the average person to be able to handle. The shocking horror of how trafficking can effect lives in a matter of minutes was able to be presented without overwhelming the reader with too many details. I think the book is suitable for both older teens and adults (some romantic scenes are made very clear, but I don’t feel they are detailed in a way that would be considered inappropriate for younger adults).
I enjoyed Heather Hoffman’s book. This is the first of her books that I have tried out, but I will certainly not pass her up if I run across any of her other books around Atlanta in my book shopping.
Danger, Romance, Suspense and a heavy dose of realism, is what you have mixed together in this book.
Rachel Cooper is a reporter. She’s not just your everyday reporter. She thrives on getting the bad guys. Now she is not only after the bad guys but has a personal stake in all of it. Rachel receives a call from her mother. Her sister is missing. She calls the first person she can think of, Conrad. She and Conrad had a previous relationship. Had, because Rachel kept relationships at arms length. Conrad is the one person she knows she can rely on to help her get her sister back. Getting her sister back isn’t enough. When she learns her sister is a victim of human trafficking, she wants to do everything she can to shut these types of people down for good. That means putting everyone in danger. The danger doesn’t end when she finally gets her sister back. I won’t say more because this is a book you really need to read.
The scary thing is that this really does happen. I remember calling a parent because one of my students came to me concerned about a friend of theirs who was talking with an older man in a chat room. Young girls are often so naïve. This girl really didn’t see where there was any danger. Her parents were unaware she was chatting online with anyone. I always knew what my children were doing online. I told them if they didn’t want me to see what they were doing then they needed to stay off. Parents need to protect their kids from these types of predators. We can’t turn a blind eye and say that these things only happen in other countries. These things happen right here in our own country and it is time we wake up to that fact. The author has done a wonderful job of bringing this to the reader’s attention. This is a book that parents should read.
I received a copy for review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
My favorite stories are all about the adventure and intrigue of finding love while fighting off the bad guys. Working out the pitfalls, bumps and misunderstandings of a romantic relationship while under fire helps to keep the pages turning. Devil In Disguise offers all of this and a good deal more. There are a few rough spots in the beginning, and one or two regional references that left me scratching my head, but Devil In Disguise finds its rhythm and delivers a read that is hard to put down.
Rachel Cooper, television journalist and on-air anchor, is good at her job. She’s also good at keeping her personal relationships at arm’s length. She likes her life the way it is until the night her teenage sister is abducted. With a single phone call Rachel and her family are thrown into the world of human trafficking. Thanks to a story she reported, Rachel knows something about the dangers - enough to have her calling in the people she trusts most. The first call she makes is to Conrad Langston, ex-lover, the man she’s never gotten over.
Rescuing Julia is just the beginning. Keeping her safe while she recovers from her ordeal requires the family to leave everything behind and disappear. For Rachel it means taking risks that she could never have dreamed of while opening her heart to Conrad and trusting in a future that may never be.
Heather Huffman takes readers into one of the most frightening scenarios a family can dream of: human trafficking. She champions a cause by weaving it into a really good story with believable characters, mostly believable scenes, and an occasional breath of humor. I will be looking for the other titles in this series.

As Heather Huffman’s seventh novel it is quite clear that she has already found her style and voice. Her heroine, Rachel, is a strong, tenacious woman with an enviable career and natural wit. Just as you find yourself getting caught up in the world of Rachel Cooper and her complex love and family life, Huffman shifts focus, throwing you into the harsh realities of human trafficking. When Rachel’s little sister takes up the offer of a meeting from an online dating site things quickly escalate into a complete nightmare. Huffman takes you into a terrifying world where the police have no authority and the enemy has no sense of humanity.
She has created a romance with an engaging twist of suspense that you will find hard to put down. Rachel is an inspirational character who has already achieved a great deal and yet she is completely believable due to her natural flaws. This is really a story about the balance between priorities and responsibilities, both in our personal lives and in relation to the rest of society. The importance of this issue to Huffman is clear through her writing and it is inspirational to note that she also donates part of the royalties for her writing to charities for the cause. Many of us might be appalled by the concept of human trafficking but to find yourself caught up in the middle of a trafficking ring, with your loved ones at risk, is unthinkable. This is not only a beautiful love story, but also an inspirational demonstration of the way human nature can stand up to this kind of trial.

I am emotionally exhausted right now. This book brought out so many fears that I, as a daughter, a mother and an aunt, have. Beneath the message in this book there is a love story, but the romance will take a backseat to the real thing that Huffman’s novel is about—human trafficking.
Can I just say that it’s almost refreshing—as absurd as that sounds—to read a story that’s completely focused on the topic without throwing in sex or erotica or falling in love with your captor or buyer. Human trafficking is a serious issue, and even though Devil in Disguise didn’t get into the real gritty details of what happens it does focus on the problem and weaves a story around it.
Stories like this put fear in my heart. I watch my children play and just thinking of their innocence being stripped away from them makes me sick. I’m not saying that Devil in Disguise was entirely realistic, there were a few things that made me raise my eyebrows in question, but the subject is all too real. I think the author did a great job in spotlighting a horrible thing in a way that doesn’t glorify it by having these girls (or boys) falling in love with those who harm them. She wrote about the fear, the consequences and the fight.
OMG!!!!! These books have me so consumed by them it's a tad bit scary. I love Love LOVE Heather Huffman. I'm so glad I discovered this author and her passion for writing extremely great books. "Devil in Disguise," is a thrill ride by far. I love how several stories from other books have been tied in together and the full circle comes about. This book was on a touchy subject that no one wants to ever talk about, human trafficking. I was skeptical at first because I didn't think it would be that interesting of a read if it dealt with the nitty gritty that no one wants to talk about and wants to hide in the closet as if it doesn't exist. However, once I started to read it, the battle for Julia and other the other children became my battle and I fell in love with the work that Conrad and Rachel were trying to get done. Tying this book in with the same characters from "Jailbird" and "Throwaway" was pure genious. The best part is, it doesn't seem like you have to read them in any certain order. They just fall into place no matter the order. This storyline was suspenseful and full of twists and turns that I wasn't expected. The ended was one I was surprised with yet proud how Huffman tied all the strings together. Great read and an eye opening book on a subject too many of us want to bypass.
Rachel's sister, Julia, was abducted when she went out on a date with a guy she chatted with on Chatspace. She called her exbf, Conrad, to help her. She called another exbf, Jeff, who is the FBI to help after Conrad urged her to call him up.
Later, she found out that Julia was being taken away from a human trafficking syndicate. The team found Julia with the help of Conrad who happened to work as a security for the casino that was running the operation.
Fast forward, their lives were in danger and needed to get away from the syndicate. Rachel and Conrad rekindled their relationship while hiding out at his sister's. She knew that in order to save both her sister and Conrad, she needed to fight the syndicate. She agreed to doing undercover work with the team in order to expose the human traffickers and make the country aware that it is happening right under their nose and do everything to keep their children safe.

I am a fan. I am usually a fan of thrillers. This isn't a hardcore thriller. Romance was thrown in a bit in there so please romance fans. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is a very light entertaining book.
I wasn't sure what to expect when we were asked to read Ms. Huffman's Devil in Disguise, as it was classified as a contemporary romance thriller. Lately I have been delving into straight erotic romance....this was a great change of pace.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed all of her characters...the heroine, Rachel Cooper....the rugged tough Conrad Langston....the innocence lost of Julia and the amazing steadfastness of Neena.
As I literally read the entire book with a 24 hour period, my heart felt for all the sadness and drama the characters had to endure. As a mother of young children, my heart stayed in my throat throughout all the suspense.
The truthfulness of human trafficking that you, as the reader experience is difficult to imagine and yet she does a fantastic job with the details....explains but not overly descriptive.
I will definitely suggest Devil in Diguise to others, as well as, look for more of Ms. Huffman's works.
This is an exciting and suspenseful story that just makes you keep turning the pages to see what is going to happen next. The central characters Rachel and Conrad are a compelling pair with their often bumpy ride as they try to reconcile their past and find a new path for their future. Rachel has to struggle with her rekindled feelings for Conrad and reevaluate her past choices as life changing events change her priorities. In an effort to protect her family and herself from the human traffickers and the organised criminal rings that supply them she may have little choice. Heather Huffman has established a careful balance in her writing, her exploration of the main characters budding romance makes her depiction of the horrors of human trafficking more real and relevant rather than simply using it as a device to drive the story, placing appropriate importance on this very real, and far too close to home problem.
I really enjoy Heather Huffman. She isn't some crazy twist and turn writer, normally there are a few problems but nothing overly bad happens to the main character. Which honestly, sometimes it's nice to not have to worry that the book isn't going to have the "happily ever after". If you are looking for a nice, enjoyable read with a strong heroine, and a hunky guy these books fit the bill. Her stories are usually good and have a social issue involved (human trafficking in this book) so you do learn something.
Wow. This is extremely well written and plants a big hole in my heart. I cannot believe how much this book has truly opened my eyes. Amongst the pain and worry, you have a beautiful love that you just want to crawl into the book and and hug them. When I finished this book, I kid you not, I hugged my girls and slept with them that night to make sure they were still with me. It's scary to think what evil is out there and how many are truly victimized by it. Great book..and I would recommend it to everyone.
I don't know how I can give this book enough praise. Having read all of Heather Huffman's previous books, I was delighted to see the development of characters from previous books (Throwaway, Jailbird and Suddenly a Spy). The characters come together in a story that will grip you and keep you reading.
Strong story that packs a strong message about human trafficking, well written romance and a few twists that grab at your heart.
Well done. I can't wait to see what else Heather comes up with.
This is really closer to 4 stars. It is a suspense/romance book that deals with human trafficking . Her sister meets someone over the Internet that kidnaps her to sell her. not sure where I lost interest in this book... I think it was about halfway through. Too many things were unbelievable and the characters were so so. Years after letting go of a relationship... Their reunion seemed hot way too quick and forced.
I am disappointed that I didn't enjoy this book more. It was a decent story but it just didn't have enough detail for me. I had trouble following the characters and their relationships, and too much was left to interpretation or imagination as far as the human trafficking goes. This book left me feeling as though I wasn't reading well enough and therefore missed key information. But maybe that "key information" just wasn't there in the first place...??
I wanted something different to read, I defiantly got that with this book. I got an email that offered me a chance to read it, I was glad I did and it made me talk to my kids and make sure they knew what to do if someone tried taking them that wasn't us. I did find a lot of errors in grammar in the copy I was sent, but overall I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading "jailbreak."
Wonderful!! Well written, great plot, characters well rounded and awesome. Loved this book!
It has suspense, mystery and romance. Also old friends from other books, what more can you ask for.
Read not only this book, read all of Heather's books!!! Several times!! I have read this book 3 times and still find things I missed the first 2 times.
Rachel Cooper is a news reporter and a strained relationship with her mother. All changes when her sister is kidnapped into a human trafficking ring and the one person who can help her is her ex-boyfriend, who she still has feelings for. Gives some insight to trafficking and raises awareness to what really does go on.
Wow! Heather once again wrote a compelling story that combined heart-wrenching realities and light-hearted moments. I just don't know how she does it. Full review at Girl Who Reads
This is a book that combines romance with mystery/thriller. The main character's sister is kidnapped by human traffickers. She and her exboyfriend anda handful of others must get her back before she is lost forever in the network.
To be honest, I thought that nothing really happened in this book. We had five pages of action and lots of a very poor character development. It didn't leave me wanting to read more and I finished it more because it was a chore than it was entertaining.
I loved reading 'Devil in Disguise'. It is an awesome read. I love how the author took a very real nightmare and wrote a great story around it. I had a hard time putting it down. The characters are all great. Well written. A great book to add to your tbr list. A definite must read. Recommended
