Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Man, this story is just kicking me in the feels every time I turn around!

description

This volume of Invincible sets us up for the end of the title, and the final showdown between the main bad guys of the series - Thragg and Rex.
description
Without giving any spoilers, this volume explores the fallout from Mark's time-travel episode, and also shows how he ends up getting sucked back into the fight.

The Big Spoilers for this one are:

I'm on pins and needles at this point, just hoping Kirkman lets Mark and Eve sail off into the sunset with a happy ending...

I'd review this but I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor...

DAMN, Mr. Kirkman... Just... HOLY GOOD GOD DAMN FUCK! If you're trying to give me heart failure, you're going the right way about it...

I'm so upset this book is ending but, after reading this arc, I know the final twelve issues are going to blow me away while they break my heart.

Sheeeiiit...

Man only two more volumes (maybe 1 very large volume) left. I am so sad. This is easily one of the best series of all time. Okay, breath...here we go.

Mark is back and his daughter is much older now. He decides it's time to stop all this hero shit. He loves Eve, he loves his daughter, it's time to get the hell out of dodge. He tells everyone he's out, peace out, and goes. The next few issues are him accepting what has happened when he was gone. Things with Eve, with his kid, with Allan. It's sad, emotional, powerful. Then we get more into his current life, him adjusting to his daughter, his father seeing him again, and we even visit Mr. Robot. You know that crazy fucking nut. Then after that we switch over to King Asshole as he sends his army of little kids to attack. Well just two, but still.

I love the first few issues. As much as I love big battles I love the small moments just as much if not more. Seeing all the family stuff was great. The last two issues are very very quick paced, a lot happens, and it felt a little rushed to me. Maybe because to get to the final arc that's coming we had to rush a little. I didn't get the impact I wanted sadly.

Also the art seemed off. I heard the artist was different than the regular and you can tell. It's off beat and faces are odd.

Still, this is a very solid volume. The first half is VERY strong and makes me so scared for the future cause I might cry without my Invincible. This series will be missed big time and if you haven't read it yet, goddamn it, get on it!!!!!

Insert random expletives here.

Every time I think we can get some kind of normalcy around here, some family time, some healing time, there's always something to completely throw me for a loop.

Excellent comic, of course. There's absolutely no doubt about that. But when my stomach dropped and I started tearing up, I knew we were onto something great. Horrible, but great.

Just. Wow. I really can't say anything without spoilering the hell out of it.

Mark has returned from the Reboot reality to a very different future, where he has to pick up the pieces of his life and try and bring them altogether. This volume includes the best, darkest and shocking issue in the entire series, #132 which starts off with some amazing insights into daughter Terr's powers to a string of shocking events that lead Mark to completely and utterly cross the line! It most certainly heralds in the beginning of the end! 9.5 out of 12. This volume also saw the return of the other artist for this book CCorey Walker.

4.5 stars. I'm not sure why this long-running comic isn't getting more publicity/exposure, since it continues to knock my socks off volume after volume.

It's sad to see this title languish and suffer (presumably due to TWD juggernaut) since it's far superior to the Walking Dead: I think this title is arguably Kirkmans best.

The one drawback is that it's not especially newbie friendly: you really need to read from the begginning to get heft and progression of each arc

Why leave someone like Emperor Thragg alive? Why? I'm really getting a bit tired of this series. Time for it to end.

I always remark how I forget how much I love this series. It’s so good. And even when I take really long breaks and forget some of the details, I still love all of the breadcrumbs and connective tissue that comes through in every issue.

This is a really emotional story. I love how well they handle the characters and allow them to actually show growth and compassion and genuine feelings, both alone and interpersonally. This was one of the few times that something major happened for Mark and Eve and I wasn’t pissed off at them for how they handled it.

I also loved the multi-level conflict that they covered. There was great tension and some shocking reveals. I am extremely thankful they didn’t leave *that* moment as a cliffhanger between issues (but also pretty surprised that they didn’t).

The art was fantastic. I had forgotten how much I loved Cory Walker on this series, and the cover to 127 was the perfect reminder of why. I like most of Ottley’s work, but that was a BAD cover (mostly because of Eve’s face).

Anyway, only two more volumes till the end. I can’t wait, but also don’t want it to end. I’m already looking forward to a re-read of the full series someday (lolololol as if I’ll ever get around to making that happen).

First Impressions:
What the fuck happened?!
You just killed like that?
ALSO, why didn't Ottley work in this volume, the decrease in art quality, my gosh
------

It seems silly to write in the review of Volume 23: CAUTION! SPOILERS AHEAD! but I gotta say, if you haven't read until this volume, don't read this, thank you :)

Five years have passed, but for Mark it was only a couple of weeks in that alternate timeline. It's the saddest thing to see Mark hugging Terra and crying for all the time lost. He promised her to always be there for her, to always protect her. And yet, he missed five years of his daughter's life. Even when he refused to fix the past, even when he decided to keep his child instead of saving thousands, he just lost so much.

This volume is about Mark trying to reconnect. To reconnect with Eve, who in those five years fell for someon else. To reconnect with Terra, who is now a very bright girl with a sense of humour very similar to her uncle Oliver.
For them to reconnect, they decide to take a break from Talescria and to relocate for some time on a secluded, small planet. In between the family-bonding time, we get glimpses of Thragg and his mighty army and the state of Earth now under Rex and Nolan's protection.

The time jump is a great choice for the story and for the big confrontation that's coming. The Viltrumite on Earth have completely assimilated to Earth's ways. Now, under Nolan's command, they are helping protect and reconstruct Earth after an invasion that left the world in shambles. Nolan and Robot are close friends and Mark distrust and resents this alliance.
Thragg has an army of hybrid Viltrumites. His children are helping him conquer and enslave many planets and he has become a mighty threat again to the Coalition of Planets.
In Talescria, Allen's failures to stop Thragg's advancements have people revolting against him, and Oliver, well, Oliver is a completely new person HE'S SO OLD! It hurts.

I feel like, in this time jump, Oliver is the character that gets the short end of the stick. Because he was already sorely missing for like four volumes, we, as readers, lost so much of his characterization. In this volume, he is already a father (which sucks to have missed all that) and most importantly, he's a traitor?!
Oliver is shown multiple times talking to Thragg, and seemingly helping him on his actions against the Coalition of Planets. I- I don't know how I feel about this, chief.
Honest truth, I feel like he might have been a double agent? But nothing is shown to prove that in this volume. It just feels SO out of nowhere to have Oliver working against Allen and the Coalition, and the whole fucking universe, given that this was the boy who always wanted to work for the big picture. Yes, he had a hard time connecting with people, but he always worked for the greater good. He followed Nolan's example.

So, I just... I don't know how to feel. I think it was a disservice to his character to have so little of him here. I wish his reasons for working with Thragg were depicted in this volume because his death was tainted under the doubt of him being a traitor. The lack of clarity on his character affected his sacrifice so much that I wasn't sad, I was just a bit frustrated. And it sucks because Oliver had so much promise as a character, but he was put aside for a very long time.
It feels like there was never a chance for him to shine as much as he did when he was out there as Kid Omni-Man.

For my money, Invincible is the best superhero comic ever written, and one of the best comics period. A hundred plus issues in and Kirkman still manages to keep the story fresh, with surprising plot developments and solid character development. I guess it's coming to an end soon, apparently, and that's kind of a bummer but also I'm looking forward to seeing these evil Vultrimites get their what for. Fucking Vultrimites. Keep.

One thing I admire about Kirkman is that he's not afraid to change things up; and if that means killing off major characters, then so be it. There were a few twists and turns I didn't see coming, which, frankly, I've come to expect from this series.

This collection of Invincible felt a bit like filler. It was necessary, in terms of character development, to hit some particular story beats, but there wasn't a lot that came out of left field. It's good, but it's not as great as some other portions of the series.

It was interesting to see the things Mark has missed these last 5 years. Eve having another partner in the years Mark was gone is one of those things. Another is the fact Oliver turned out to be a spy for Thragg. I don't know if it's just me but this comes out of nowhere. Of course 5 years went by, so I wasn't too bothered by it. But then at the end he betrays Thragg again and gets killed. Kirkman could've done more with this, it was an intriguing set-up.
As for that ending tho, those last two issues were intense! I was shocked by all the gore. I seriously thought Eve would die, but then Mark died too so I knew something was gonna undo all of it. I do find it weird how nonchalant Mark and Eve were handling it afterwards though. As if they weren't just brutally 'murdered'. I guess for them violence on levels like those is something they got used to, but for us the readers it's not something that should be dealt with so lightly since it kinda just lowers the stakes going further.

About lowering the stakes though and let me be a lil hypocrite: i'm still incredibly hyped for those last two volumes and can't wait to read them. Although it is a litlle bit sad I'm almost finished with this series.

And for the art btw, it's good but I just prefer the regular Invincible art. Ryan Ottley has literally become one of my favs since reading Invincible.

The perfect beginning of the final arc.

The ending of this volume was amazing demonstrating the strength of only thragg and two of his children, when he still has a lot more. It also really sets the tone for the end of all things, seeing the mindset and strength of thraggs children.
The old Art style is back for these six issues and I don’t like it -1 star.
I also really liked to see what was going on on earth but now I want to know more about the war with the technicians.
Get ready for the end of all things.

Invincible is the best superhero comic book in the universe.

You know what? No. Invincible continues to tackle some of its most recent themes in the most tasteless way possible and it's not getting better.

I find Robot's system of government interesting, though. Is it a planned economy? I hope he's not turned into a villain in the last five issues again to make things "exciting". Now that would be terrible!

P.S. Mark visited Earth again after years of being out and he couldn't even visit his old best friend? I don't know...also, that ending was awful.

We get a rundown of what's happened in the five year time skip, then a bunch of brutal fighting occurs. Robert Kirkman gets to use his two greatest talents- mindless gore, and exposition dumps! Hurray!

I've been pretty negative about most of the Invincible run, but what I will always highlight is how Ryan Ottley draws faces. They're bold! Expressive! He makes dialogue scenes race with the same pacing of his action scenes! Even when the characters are having a conversation, he can make Kirkman's writing tolerable- or, as a bonus, you can often skip reading the words and just see the pictures. Ottley is just that good.

Ryan Ottley isn't drawing this volume, though. Instead we have series co-creator Cory Walker returning and... the faces are awful. Mark looks constantly on the verge of crying, even when he's not crying, and his resting cringe face matches my face when reading.

At least Mark has decided to move on with the main plot now. Yup. Kirkman has spent the series getting rid of all the interesting characters so it's just Eve (who is significantly less interesting now that she has to pretend like Mark is the greatest and she's not worthy of him) and maybe Nolan alongside... I don't know, I don't really care about most of these other characters. Is The Immortal still around? I don't know who I'm rooting for. Terra, I guess. I want the little girl to not die, and that's the most emotional investment I've had in this series since its inception.

Logic is often thrown out of window while reading a comic book , specially something as Over-the-top as Invincible , and yet this book nagged me for large bits . For one the first few chapters had a different art style , which was grating to my eye , to top it off they really did make Mark Grayson a Wimp , out of nowhere as well . He had a few moments earlier , but this book had him weeping so much it creeped me out . Not to mention the handling of Oliver , his character has done so many u-turns between a face and a heel character that it's annoying at this point plus his fate in the end was so anti-climatic . That said there were saving graces , from how Mark and Eve dealt with respective spousal pasts and Marks relationship with his Daughter and especially the final two volumes which were action packed and adrenaline rushed . Overall , it's starting to feel like after reaching a peak point somewhere around volume 20 , Invincible has become tiresome for me to read , with a lot of dull moments and very little payback to satisfy . Either ways , I am reading along with the idea there's only 2 more volumes to go . Either I will end up emotionally sated or just be done with this book

Invincible Vol. 23 Full House collects issues 127-132 written by Robert Kirkman with art by Cory Walker.

The story picks up 5 years after the time jump revealed at the end of Vol. 22. Mark and Eve's daughter is now a spunky 5-year old. Mark has made the decision to settle down with family and to stop being a superhero.

The time jump was a great way to help progress the story and amplify the Thragg situation. Terra (Mark and Eve's daughter) is a great new addition to the cast. Some major things happen in this volume as we approach the end of the story. The original artist Cory Walker returns to the comic to pencil and ink the complete arc. Cory's art is great but doesn't have the detail that Ryan Ottley has. Really excited and saddened to see what happens in these last two volumes.

It is a flippin' shame that a story this good has art this poor at that end of the run.

I'm going to cross my fingers for this weird minimalist style to go away for the last two volumes.

Aside from the art that I literally cringed at near every page, the story was good.

It's been about a year since I had read Vol. 22 (Reboot?) and I started this whole amazing series several years ago, reading about one or two every month or so. I had been looking forward to the culmination of Mark Grayson's adventures while also dreading finishing the series. It's funny that between Vol. 22 & 23 is when I has stopped reading for almost a year (I used to get them through Inter-Library Loan, which stopped when Covid-19 started), because there's a huge reveal at the end of Vol. 22.

In Vol. 23 Mark, Eve, and Terra get re-acquainted after Mark's absence and adjust to their new life. Meanwhile Allen the Alien tries to recruit Mark into fighting Thragg, who has bred more warriors and is continuing to take over planets and spread his Empire. Mark doesn't want to fight Thragg anymore, he just wants to be with his family, but as you can imagine, he doesn't get what he wants and Thragg finds Mark and his family with plans to kill them. Mark's brother Oliver, who had been playing double agent against Thragg, steps in and tries to save Mark and convince Thragg to leave them alone, but things ... don't go well for Oliver.

4.5/5.

Definitely prefer my goat Ryan Ottley’s art to Walker’s, especially this late in the series when I’ve gotten used to looking at Ottley’s amazing art the whole time, but the art was still cool.
Plot wise, this follows on from the effects caused by the event in volume 22, and it’s… cool, but not amazing imo. I like where it was heading towards the end of the volume though, cause that whole fight was cool as fuck. A couple things plot-wise I wish were changed (such as Eve’s… decisions) but I suppose they all still make sense.
Still a great read though and I can’t believe I have to wait for my volume 25 to arrive so I can finish this series😭 whyyyyy I don’t wanna wait😢

This volume was awesome, Mark returns home after being gone for 5 years and he deals with it and then he goes to earth and sees whatever Rex has been doing and then the stuff with Eve and all and then meeting his dad and then returning to Talescria only for us to find that Thragg has become a big threat and he is taking out people and its upto Mark and all to finish him but what he does in the end is brutal and shocking. The series is coming to a close but whatever he has planned for Mark is gonna be hard to read. Pretty good volume but the art was distracting and kinda static to look at.

I have heard this series will end around the #150 issue. I must say it's been a great and entertaining read the entire time. I will definitely have to go back once it is ended and reread the entire thing so really appreciate the depth of the many plots and story twists. Honestly this entire series reads like a Superhero roleplaying game my friends and I would have come up with. Very much worth your time and effort to pick it up and read, it only gets better as the issues pile up. Very recommended

Still one of the most fun books to read, super bloody and yet somehow believable. I love how bad Thragg is, truly a superior bad guy for a hero named Invincible. But how is anyone gonna beat him? I will trust that Krikman can come up with something awesome!

The art style change took some time getting used to but other than that this is a really great volume. I loved *that* Mark moment, it was really badass. Just two more to go and I'm guessing from the next volume things will start getting even crazier.
