The Dowser #1-3

Dowser Series: Box Set 1

Rate this book
Three bestselling urban fantasies from award-winning author Meghan Ciana Doidge. Dowser 1, 2, and 3 complete the first of three trilogies in the Dowser Series. The magic and mayhem continues in books four to nine.

The customer looked familiar, like maybe he'd been in the bakery a few times before. The vampire, however, was new. - Dowser 1

Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1)

If you'd asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders -- the Adept -- was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it. That's what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you -- a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled ... except for the cupcake part. That's a universal truth.

Trinkets, Treasures, and Other Bloody Magic (Dowser 2)

Three months ago, I lost my foster sister, Sienna, to the darkness. As in blood magic and chaos and general mayhem. No one saw it until it was too late, but I should have. Now, I have a wounded heart and soul that I can't even reveal to anyone around me, because I'm supposed to hate Sienna with the fiery passion of the justified. And I do. I just wish I didn't feel so lost without her, so unsure of the path I thought I had carved for myself, and so outclassed by the powerful Adepts constantly by my side these days. I'm not even sure if they're with me for my own protection or because my shiny new powers are rare and valuable. Assuming I ever figure out who or what I am, and how my magic actually works.

Even chocolate can't save the day every time ... just most of the time. At least I've got that going for me.

Treasures, Demons, and Other Black Magic (Dowser 3)

I hadn't set foot in the human world for more than a few hours in over three and a half months. Sure, I was stronger and faster than I'd ever been before, and I had a shiny new sword, but I was seriously chocolate deprived. I don't recommend quitting cold turkey. And the new sword was a problem -- to my mind, anyway. It represented all the expectations of a powerful father and a new otherworldly life. A life that wasn't the one I'd worked so hard to build. It also represented the responsibility I had to bring my foster sister Sienna to ... what? Justice? I didn't know if that was even possible. What I did know was that Sienna wouldn't stop, and that I couldn't just leave everything up to fate and destiny ... or maybe I was. Maybe I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. If you believed in that sort of thing.

I just hoped that before the chaos and mayhem renewed, I'd manage to get my hands on some chocolate. It didn't even have to be single-origin Madagascar. I was utterly prepared to lower my standards.

3.5 actually... The evolution from TSTL I guess could be considered character development... but still knocked it down from 4 overall.

Interesting world development but I prefer the sidekicks to the main (Kandy & Drake).

Will try the Oracle book which is the next.

The link to a free cookbook is a nice touch. All the descriptions made me hungry, shame I won't bake something that complicated. 😅

What a surprising read and I'm happy to see there are more books to the series!

The book is about Jade and her family and (unexpected) friends. At first I didn't know where the story was leading and at the end of the first book, going on to the second one, the changes were a little abrupt. The third part was not as great to me, as I just wanted to know more about the people who are helping her finding her purpose. I hope part 4 gives more story between her and the werewolf, as it feels very much like the story is not finished. Liked it a lot!

An infuriatingly good story that you cannot put down!!

I would have gave it five stars but sometimes Jade’s stupidity and juvenile behavior piss me off. But I guess that’s what you get from a complex character who is acting “only human” yet is anything but human. Let me just say this the author is a tease when will she give Desmond and Jade their time. Anyway this story will make you dive into a world with the perfect villain in Sienna, heroine Jade, werewolf Kandy, necromancer Mory, witches, and etc. I finished this book within 2-3 days I could not put it down because I found myself submerged into this paranormal world of witches, vampires, dragons, alchemist, and more. Also if you were going to start a diet don’t read this book it will cause you to have an addiction to cupcakes and dessert by the likes in which you have never seen.

3.5* This book is an on going series, 9 books plus spin offs that you apparently have to read. That disappointed me. I was being forced to invest in a new storyline, rather that it being a fun option. The books are also too short to be $5 a read. Wasn’t that good a series.

Really liked all the characters. The main character could annoy me sometimes, but it also showed she wasn’t perfect and had room for growth. I was just waiting for the growth to occur. By the third book It had started.

If they ever do a bundle again I may continue this series. But it’s too expensive to buy each individually.

So I’ve only read 1-3.

Steam- 0 so far, lots of build up, like maybe there will be, eventually, but so far NONE. Didn’t love that.

Really enjoyed the world. And I def been needing to bake and find some chocolate!!!

This series moves!

I love this series! I love being in the character’s head and experiencing all her crazy, chocolate-coated emotions. This character has spunk and drive and ad libs like there’s no tomorrow. Kett is absolutely my most favorite character. I love the spice and interaction between Desmond and Jade and Kett and Jade. I wanted more of the saucy love stuff, but the story wasn’t about that. The story focused on Jade’s quest to stop her sister, but everything along the way was a blast.

Reader Rated for ages 17+ for plenty of sensuality; also contains moderate violence and mild language.

good for all the right reasons

like characters who don't fit the tired old profiles, a main character who has flaws but doesn't sulk or snark her way through pain, someone learns from her mistakes and doesn't run away from her friends and family to battle alone, rare strong powers that have to be trained instead of popping up full-blown, an interesting world that we learn about as the heroine does, actual relationships not insta-lusts, and more besides. The kind of solid readable writing that has you look forward to the next book.

This is a nicely done supernatural series. Jade is a talented baker who enjoys creating jewelry and trinkets in her spare time. a half witch, she has been lead to believe that her magical powers are minimal. But murder, a vampire and a pack of werewolves force her into a magical crash course ,a quest that is both exhillirating and devestating.

I enjoyed all three novellas in this set. Jade is likable and the kpacing is good. I was able to identify the doers early on but it still was an entertaining read. If you are a fan of urban fantasy and paranormal suspense, this set delivers.

bad swearing, blasphemy , crudeness

Whilst the blurb sounded entertaining, the authours use, which was constant in what I read, of the ‘f’ word, blasphemy and sexual crudeness was just awful, and stopped me reading further.
Hey if you like that sort of thing, go for it.
But if you prefer good skills in writing character depth, plots that don’t cry to be read by pre teens and prefer writers who know how to use words that aren’t vulgar or offensive to most people then don’t read this trash.

Epic Adventure

The story just kept getting better with each book that I read. The main characters were believable and solid enough to invest an emotional response to them. I really enjoyed the storyline and kept me interested throughout all three books. Can't wait to see where the next boxed set leads.

Witches, vampires, wereshifters and dragons..OH MY!!!

I loved the stories and the characters. While there is a lot of violence and g

ore, off times I would ask myself; why are they doing that and what does this mean,BUT, I finished the first three books. I will give it a rest for now, but I need to see the heroine get a lover. So, I'll be back TA TA

Very good read

I always appreciate an easy to follow, interesting plot without a lot of "fill" words; if you feel the need to have to explain your storyline in every chapter you may need to go back and flesh out the story and/or characters. This author did not disappoint. Well laid out plot, chapters and character introductions. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Doidge!

Hooked and happy about it.

I am so happy I found this set of books! I'm worried I may have gained weight just from all the wonderful cupcakes mentioned in it. I think all the carefully timed action may have helped though. Time to get the rest of the books because these were so good!

Books 1-3 in the story of Jade.

She is more than a witch but it takes a while for her to discover the truth about her father.

She starts by thinking that her power is limited until she gets involved with a vampire and a shifter pack. There's blood magic and a powerful sorcerer and her father.

The story develops well and the characters are engaging.

I was attracted to the series by the cupcake on the cover, by the creative book titles, and by the synopsis that talked about a witch who owned a bakery and made decadent cupcakes. A magical spell keeps out fantastical creatures like vampires and werewolves. After reading the first few pages before purchasing the three-book set, I knew the books would be a fun read, and they were.

Magic.Comes with a Price

The Dowser Series is hands down one of the best Magic, fantasy, supernatural book I've read!!
Jade's character is just so lovable. She loves so hard and fights for what she believes in, never giving up hope. If the rest of the series is as good as the 1st box set, you can't go wrong!

Super lighthearted and enjoyable. A little too much deus ex machina when the going got tough and the main character's arch wasn't super believable.

But all in all they're good books if you're looking for some lighthearted fantasy.

Good series

I liked the characters. I liked the story plots. However, there were a lot of repeat descriptions. In a couple places I thought I had missed where I was in the book because it was a description further back that had been used again. I will read again from this auther.

Great series. Interesting story line that kept my interest all the way through the 3-book set. Unusual enough that I couldn't predict where it was going, so it kept me on the edge of my seat. Sper read!

Characters you wish you could meet!

The first book in the series was my favorite. Then the story became too unbelievable. Even then, the characters are so well drawn they seem real. The stories are compelling. The action is well written.
