The day the Yankees came and took everything from wealthy landowner Vincent Bayonne was a day he’d never forget—how could he live with the uncertainty of not knowing what happened to his wife and children? Forced to watch as his plantation was burned to the ground by one of the slaves, Bayonne has sunk to the bottom of the barrel. A drunkard who has only his consuming hatred to sustain him, he makes his way from Louisiana to San Francisco, barely managing to survive on the Barbary Coast.

Just when he thinks he has nothing to live for, he discovers that William Sherman, the former slave who torched his home, is alive and well—and Sherman bears a hatred for his former master to match Bayonne’s. When Sherman bests Bayonne in a fight, the once-wealthy Southerner wakes up in a coffin, prepared for a fate he could never have imagined.

Hatred fuels Bayonne’s survival, but Sherman has cursed his nemesis with powerful voodoo magic that dooms him to an eternity of only half-living in the twilight existence of a zombie. Can an old Chinaman provide the answers Bayonne needs to survive in the world of the UNDEAD?

Bayonne was a wealthy Louisiana landowner but the Civil War and one of his former slaves took almost everything from him, including his land, wife, and children. Now he's out West, in San Francisco, ruled by the bottle. He can't really sink much lower...or can he? After losing a fight to that same former slave, Bayonne wakes up in a coffin. Upon his escape, he soon learns that he is virtually impervious to pain, even if he sticks himself deeply with a knife. Is it a curse? Voodoo? Is he a zombie? His life now narrows to two goals: a cure from his "condition" and revenge upon his former slave.

"Jackson Lowry" is a pseudonym for award-winning author Robert E. Vardeman, a prolific author of science fiction, fantasy, westerns, and other genres. His imagination knows no bounds and I'm pleased to say this novel reflects that. I've read a number of "Weird Westerns" and usually come away disappointed. Many times authors struggle with trying to jam a horror entity like a vampire or demon monster into a traditional sort of western and the result looks like just that: jammed together. But here, we have an organic story, not to mention a unique way to build a zombie-western story. Rather than have a protagonist monster hunter we have a protagonist who becomes the monster. Very cool. This author understands how to build a story from the ground up.

Two more novels exist in this series and I hope to read them soon. I feel compelled to see what happens next.
