For seven generations, the Sterling family had lived on the same land, near a small town named after them. Many years after its founding, Sterling Town was encircled by a national forest and was then bypassed by development. It was a good place to raise a family.
John Wayne Sterling and his friend, Hal Shealy, became licensed Ham radio operators while in high school, and through that interest, met Nathan Goodman; an Air Force Colonel who was also a licensed Ham. John Wayne graduated from Clemson University as a Civil Engineer and returned to Sterling to join his father in his forestry business, and began taking Forestry classes in technical school. He met Jessica Clay West, whom he later married.
Jessica, and Hal's wife, Gina, started a business making and selling digital security devices created by Gina. As the digital business grew, Jessica began making videos in which she complained about commercial banks convincing customers that credit was actually money, and that the banks’ lack of reserves was sound banking practice. As her fan base increased and became better informed, Jessica began appealing directly to everyone to close their bank accounts and buy gold and silver. The videos became more popular and the snowballing effects of customer withdrawals began tipping the balance against the banks.
Jessica began receiving subtle guidance from Colonel Goodman, nudging her into unknowingly supporting the plans of a clandestine movement. The movement's actions, combined with Jessica's honest and believable public commentaries, began an avalanche of cause-and-effect events that turned the financial system in a steeply downward direction.
The Dollar became worthless, the banks closed, and the world financial system collapsed when the lack of money caused everything to fail. The unintended consequences were far more widespread and devastating than any of the participants could have imagined, especially when plans for surviving a disaster did not apply to the real disaster when it happened.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. It was well written and based on a good premise. It had a lot of good information with regards to preparedness. Highly recommend.
