About the author

Jean-Pierre Vernant was a French historian and anthropologist, specialist in ancient Greece. Influenced by Claude Lévi-Strauss, Vernant developed a structuralist approach to Greek myth, tragedy, and society which would itself be influential among classical scholars. He was an honorary professor at the Collège de France.

Born in Provins, France, Vernant at first studied philosophy, receiving his agrégation in this field in 1937.

A member of the Young Communists (Jeunes Communistes), Vernant joined the French Resistance during World War II and was a member of Libération-sud (founded by Emmanuel d'Astier). He later commanded the French Interior Forces (FFI) in Haute-Garonne under the pseudonym of "Colonel Berthier." He was a Companion of the Liberation. After the war, he remained a member of the French Communist Party until 1969.

He entered the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) in 1948 and, under the influence of Louis Gernet, turned to the study of ancient Greek anthropology. Ten years later, he became director of studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). In 1971 he was professor in the University of São Paulo. This visit was also an act of protest that he made with François Châtelet against the brazilian military government (dictatorship).

He was a member of the French sponsorship committee for the Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. He supported the funding organisation Non-Violence XXI.

He was awarded the CNRS gold medal in 1984. In 2002, he received an honorary doctorate at the University of Crete.

Vernant died a few days after his 93rd birthday in Sèvres.

“Her şeyden önce kaos vardı” Kaos’tan Kozmos’a giden yolu da hiçlikten çıkan Gaia ile başlatır Antik Yunan. Sonrası doğmak,varolmak, dünyada olmak üzerine binbir efsunlu hikayedir. Karmaşıktır, çok anlamlıdır ve anlatıların alt metni okunduğu kadar basit değildir. Bir hikayeyi ele alıp anlamlandırmaya çalışırken bütün genelde kaçar gider. İşte bu yüzden Yunan Mitoloji’sine dair bildiklerim, okuduklarım hep dağınık hep bir sisler bulutu içindeydi. Torunuma Yunan Mitleri bu sisleri epey bir dağıttı diyebilirim. Az ve öz,bağlantıları kaçırmadan anlatıyor hikayeleri, çünkü herkes bilir ki mitlerde hikayenin sonuna geldiğinde başını hatırlamak güçtür. Burada isimden de anlaşılacağı üzere basit bir anlatım var. Yunan Mitolojisine dair genel bir bilgi edinmek için de ayrıntılarda boğulmayıp bütünü görebilmek isteyenler için de yararlı bir kaynak.

Mitolojiye dair pek çok tragedya ve mit bir şekilde hafızamızda geziniyor aslında. Ancak bunları kronolojik bir sıra ile hatırlamak ve kaçırdığınız ayrıntıları yerlerine oturtmak isterseniz bu kitap muazzam bir rehber.

Azra Erhat’ın Homeros kitabında olduğu gibi, oldukça sade bir dil ile ve textbook okuyormuş gibi hissettirmeden aksine elinizden bırakamadan okuyabileceğiniz bir başlangıç kitabı. Yunan mitolojisini en başından evrenin oluşumu Khaos ve Gaia’dan başlayarak, Truva’yı, Odyyseus’u yollarda kaybeden kibrini, Pandora’nın kutusundan önce kendisini, Dionysos’un ötekilerin tanrısına dönüşümünü, Oidipus’tan Perseus’a kadar giderek anlatıyor. Jean-Pierre Vernant hayatının 50 yılını Yunan mitolojisini çözümlemeye vermiş, torununu dahi bu mitlerle uyutmuş bir antropolog. O yüzden yalnızca değindiği ayrıntılar açısından değil, anlatımı ve aktarımı konusunda da çok başarılı. Elbette burada mitler torununa anlattığı basitleştirilmiş halinden daha detaylı ve çoğu mitin birden fazla versiyonuna yer vererek hangisinin neden daha mantıklı olduğuna değiniyor. A splendid little book for everyone interested in mythology.

'Mitologia greca', molto spesso ne sentiamo parlare ma sappiano davvero cosa sia un mito, i valori che porta con sé, quali sono le diverse varianti di essi e che collegamenti hanno gli uni con gli altri? Vernant in modo semplice e lineare ci spiega tutto questo, dandoci un'idea generale di cosa volessero dire i miti all'epoca e cosa vogliono dire oggi.
'L'universo, gli déi, gli uomini' il titolo del saggio già ci predice di cosa parlerà : "In principio era il caos(..) ", partendo da qui si dipana tutta la storia della Mitologia greca, dal mito cosmogonico tutto ha origine, quindi L'UNIVERSO;una volta creato il mondo dalla madre terra nascono le divinità, parliamo dei miti teogonici appunto GLI DEI ;con le azioni di Prometeo e Pandora parliamo dei miti antropogonici e quindi, GLI UOMINI.
Sintetico ma allo stesso tempo esaustivo per chi necessita solo di una conoscenza generale dei miti greci questo libro riesce a far innamorare di quella che era la narrazione per eccellenza, raccontata oralmente di padre in figlio alla quale la letteratura di ogni genere deve tanto.

This was such a good collection of myths. Vernant's retellings were utterly enjoyable. He covers everything from the creation of Earth and humans, through the myth of Pandora's box, Prometheus, the Trojan War, Odysseus' travels, Dionysus (who is possibly my favourite Greek god, so thank you for including him <333), and the tale of Oedipus. It was a really solid collection and a great starter for the basics of some of the most iconic Greek myths.

Remember though, these are just retellings of myths, with no commentary on them. So when they're horribly sexist and racist, they're just horribly sexist and racist (if we can apply those terms to ancient times which is a whole other debate that will probably never end and I cannot possibly get into in a Goodreads review) and you have to deal with it.

But yes this was v enjoyable.

Bu kitap bana mitleri okumayı neden sevmediğimi ve aslında bu metinlere nasıl yaklaşmam gerektiğini öğretti. Mit anlayışında evrenin kökeninden başlayarak devler savaşı, Zeus'un kral oluşu, insanların dünyasının oluşumu, Troya Savaşı, Odysseus'un macerası, Dionysos, Oidipus, Perseus gibi duraklara uğramış yazar. Adı üstünde torununa anlatır gibi tüm hikayeleri ve karakterleri birbirine bağlayarak yazmış metni. Mitoloji hususunda kafamı berraklaştıran tabiri caizse taşları yerine oturtan, akıcı bir dille yazılmış kısa bir kitap okumuş oldum. 2022 yılında daha sistematik olmasını dilediğim mitoloji okumaları için güzel bir başlangıç oldu.

Invece di rincorrere edizioni, editori su editori, ristampe: eccolo lì, un libro scritto dai uno dei maggiori studiosi della mitologia greca. Jean-Pierre Vernant, professore onorario al Collège de France.

Un libro che comincia da Chaos fino ai figli dei figli di Zeus; dalle navigazioni di Ulisse alle imprese di Perseo, sbirciando sulla storia di Achille e della guerra di Troia fino ad Edipo.

Vernant reúne alguns dos mitos mais emblemáticos da antiguidade grega. Às vezes, mais de uma versão em paralelo, já que esse tipo de história é tão diverso quanto aqueles que as escolhem contar. Ao longo de seus relatos, o autor ressalta aspectos fundamentais da narrativa mítica, os marcos que delimitam suas fronteiras. Dentre eles, pode-se destacar a consciência da finitude humana, a qual estrutura a cosmogonia da grega antiga a partir da divisão entre a eternidade, que é divina e a efemeridade, que é de todo o resto dos seres vivos.

Efetivente, o narrador frisa repetidamente a marca da mortalidade humana: para Prometeu, o alimento; para Aquiles, o calcanhar, seu ponto fraco; para Ulisses, o corpo enrugado, abatido pelo tempo. Essas marcas são estigmas, são inextricáveis. Entretanto, não são símbolo de vergonha. Nas palavras de Vernant: "Aquiles fez a sua escolha: vida curta e glória eterna."

Assim, o que constitui a humanidade do indivíduo, aos olhos de Vernant, é aquilo que ele tem de seu, que é aquilo que ele tem a perder: "Aproveitar a vida, o bem mais precioso para as criaturas finitas (...)." Se trata de una recopilación de relatos mitológicos griegos, recopilación que podría dividirse en tres grandes apartados: la aparición del universo y de la vida, así como de las distintas generaciones de dioses; el conflicto entre estos y mortales, con la mediación de Prometeo, y, por último, las aventuras de una selección de héroes (Aquiles, Ulises, Edipo, Perseo, etc.). Está narrado con gran lujo de detalles en ocasiones, lo que demuestra por parte de su autor un amplio conocimiento de la materia; sin embargo, le asigno cuatro y no cinco estrellas porque no aborda todas las historias o los personajes de los que podría hablar (¿por qué solo existe alguna referencia casi de pasada a Ares, dios de la guerra?, ¿por qué no se habla de las hazañas de Heracles pero sí de las de Perseo?...; no queda claro el criterio que ha seguido), y porque son escasas las claves interpretativas o simbólicas que aporta como mitólogo para entender mejor estas narraciones, el sentido o el valor que tienen (al final resulta simplemente una narración de los mitos para adultos).

Jean-Pierre Vernant é um dos mais renomados helenistas europeus. Estudioso da cultura grega há cinqüenta anos, ele conhece o fascínio que os mitos clássicos continuam a exercer sobre os homens. O Universo, os deuses, os homens é uma boa prova disso. Guia de introdução à mitologia, a obra reúne algumas das mais belas histórias da Antiguidade clássica e mostra como os mitos podem se renovar em cada um dos dramas, aventuras e tragédias que protagonizam.

Como um avô que conta histórias para seu neto - afinal, foi assim que começou o projeto desse livro - Vernant narra episódios como a luta de Zeus contra os Titãs, a fuga de Ulisses, que escapa das sereias que queriam encantá-lo, e o roubo do fogo do Olimpo, feito de Prometeu que acabou dando origem aos homens. Seu grande trunfo, porém, é misturar mitologia e filosofia com estudos de história, antropologia e lingüística, revelando-se um pesquisador extremamente original.

A straightforward retelling of some of the major myths, almost like bedtime stories, with some pithy lines here and there on the possible meanings. A lot of this is familiar ground of course (Vernant even skips the Trojan War, saying he's not going to improve on Homer), but I learned a lot too, especially about the importance of Prometheus (who did a lot more than steal fire), Pandora, and Dionysus. For the Greek worldview on life, death, identity, time, sex, glory, hubris, etc., this seems a perfect starting point.

In some places, this was brilliant, and in others, it had me pulling out my hair. This is largely because it isn't always clear (or it wasn't to me anyway) if the author was writing in the POV of the Greeks telling the myth *or* if he was expanding on the myths with his own interpretation. If he was writing in Greek POV, then yes, the Greeks were misogynistic, I get that. However, not all the misogyny sounded as if it was coming from the Greeks themselves. This could be blatant, as in the case of Pandora, or more subtle, as in describing Europa as a "wanderer" and a "wayfarer" when she was kidnapped, as if she had a choice in the matter. (This could also be the fault of the translator, to be fair, as this is a book in English translated from the French about stories told in Greek.)

I wasn't long into this book before I felt like I needed to dust off my anthropology degree. In the Preface, the author mentions his debt to Claude Levi-Strauss, a major figure in the history of anthropology and one I remembered from various lectures in which we were introduced to his theory of binary opposition: that humans tend to see the world in binary opposites and this informs the structure of myth across cultures. You can definitely see this influence on Vernant in his retellings/interpretations, which are often presented as male/female opposition. In fact, most of the myths are explained in terms of *some* kind of binary opposites: gods/mortals; male/female; day/night; youth/old age. Levi-Strauss's theory has been criticized (rightly, I think), but we are talking about the Greeks and possibly Western civilizations has these ideas about imposing binary opposites *because* of the Greeks. That wasn't really clear to me, though, as the author shifted from story-like retelling into interpretation without much indication of which he was doing.

Aside from that, some of his picks were a little uneven. For instance, the Trojan War gets a 20 page chapter which is mostly about what happens before the war. Achilles gets a brief mention, Hector nothing, and the actual action of the war is totally skipped. 40 pages of detailed synopsizing of the Odyssey follow. I'm a fan of Odysseus, but that just seemed odd.

Still, the writing is excellent, and he makes several points that I had never considered. I'm just not sure I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't already have some knowledge of mythology and at least a passing acquaintance with the thought of Claude Levi-Strauss. Honestly, I wish I had also read Hesiod's Theogeny first, too (it's on order now).

But if you're somewhat knowledgeable about Greek mythology and drama, then I do think this book is worth reading even though I was gnashing my teeth to get through some spots.

Questo libro non era nella mia tbr, non lo conoscevo neppure.

Una sera però, prima della mia partenza per la Grecia, dove vado ogni estate a casa, mio padre prende dalla sua grande libreria questo libro e mi consiglia di leggerlo.

Una delle letture più belle del 2023.

In un periodo in cui veniamo continuamente circondati da retelling (sorry not sorry, la maggior parte brutti e superficiali), questi libri sono un vero spiraglio di luce.

Vernant, uno dei più famosi studiosi di cultura greca ci racconta qui le origini dell’universo per i greci, i loro dei e alcuni loro miti.

Lo fa in modo chiaro, semplice, perché come dice lui stesso nell’introduzione, ha provato a mettere per iscritto le storie e le leggende che raccontava a suo figlio prima di dormire. Mi ha ricordato molto la situazione con il mio di padre e mi ha fatto sorridere.

Un testo assolutamente necessario se si è appassionati di mitologia, storia e cultura greca. Se si vuole VERAMENTE apprendere e conoscere. è stato bellissimo conoscere e approfondire ulteriormente tante cose, nonostante io sia una grande appassionata e in generale abbia un’infarinatura su tutta la cultura greca (avendo dato anche molti esami all’università).

Un libro che consiglio a tutti, veramente a tutti, breve ma intenso e scritto benissimo.

Torunuma Yunan Mitleri uzun bir süredir kitaplığımda bekliyordu. Yunan mitolojisini en çok Percy Jackson serisiyle ve devamında birçok fantastik kitapla öğrendim. Bu yüzden artık mitolojiden bir karakterden veya olaydan bahsedildiğinde genelde hakim oluyorum. Yine de hatırlatıcı kitaplar okumanın da faydasını görüyorum ki özellikle Yunan mitolojisinin derinine de inmek için okumalar yapmayı seviyorum. Torunuma Yunan Mitleri aslında bir başlangıç kitabı olarak görülebilir ve bence oldukça başarılı yazılmış. Vernant ünlü bir Antikçağ tarihçisi olarak mitolojinin başlangıcını ve önemli diğer olayları kimseyi sıkmayacak şekilde anlatmak istemiş. Bunun için de aynı torununa anlattığı gibi bir yöntem kullanmak istemiş. Olayları okurken hem çok iyi bir şekilde öğreniyorsunuz hem de bunalmıyorsunuz. Boşluk ve Gaia’dan başlıyor devamında Titanların doğuşu, Zeus’un mücadelesi, Prometheus’la insanların değişimini anlatıyor. Elbette Troya Savaşı, Odysseus, Oidipus ve Perseus’la devam ediyor. Benim için en öğretici kısım başlangıçla Dionysos’un bölümü oldu çünkü öncesinde bu kadar detaylı öğrenmemiştim. Enteresan tahlillerin yapılması kitabı sadece hikaye anlatmasından öteye taşıyor. Örneğin Gaia’nın ve Uranos’la birbirini tamamlamanın açıklandığı kısımla Oidipus’un çözdüğü bilmecenin aslında kendi hikayesi olmasına dair analizleri çok beğendim. Keyifli bir okuma oldu tek şikayetim tekrarlamaların sık yapılmasıydı. Öğrenmeyi güzel pekiştiriyor ama okurken farklı cümlelerle aynı şeyleri okumak beni sıktı. Sözlük kısmı güzel düşünülmüş. Arada bilgilerimi tazelemek için açıp bölümlere göz gezdirebilirim.

Homeros 'a ya da Yunan tragedya retoriğinin öncüllerine hangi rüzgarlar, hangi kıvılcımlar ilham kaynağı olmuştur, hiç bir zaman bilemeyeceğiz elbette, lakin, 3000 yıl önce o insanlar Apollo' ya tanrı diye tapıyorlardı ;1960 'larda ardılları, Apollo programları ile Ay' a ayak bastılar. Antik Yunan tragedyası ile betimlenen o bilinemez olan Chaos, bilinen ve izlenebilen kocaman bir Cosmos'a evrildi. İşte Rönesans dedikleri bence budur.

Kltaba gelince, ilgisi olan herkesin belleğinde kopuk kopuk olan hikayeler, yaşanan ve yaşatılan düalite (ki Yunan Mitolojisinin esin kaynağıdır bence "her şeyin zıddında gizli olduğu" prensibi) unutamayacağımız bir Akdeniz sofrası gibi sunulmuş önümüze. Şahsım adına İsa'nın son akşam yemeğine benzemeyeceği kesin, ölmeden önce Torunuma başımda okutacağım... Kitabıı okurken acaba torunu kaç yaşındaydı sorusu geliyor ya insanın aklına, Vernant'ın kitabın ismini seçerken ki o da daa daaan anını giderayak ki Dionysosçuluğuna bağlıyorum. .

Loved this book - really concise but beautifully written retelling of some Classic Greek myths. It never focuses on the parts we all know, preferring to explain the history behind them or present alternative versions. You're given the history behind the Iliad and then the Odyssey in full (always my favourite) with some interesting explanations of the allegories contained in the myths. The beginning section (pre Zeus) was a series of myths I knew very little about but the book does a great job of outlining the familial relationships between all the main characters, as well as their main characteristics/powers/life events. The genealogy could (and does) get very complicated but the use of little pointers or reminders and the decision to focus on certain key persons means I was never confused about who was being described.

A grown-up version of some classic myths, containing all the classic stories but with just enough background and explanation to add a completely new aspect. Really great book.

Toda noite, um avô conta estórias para seu neto. Só que essa avô não é uma pessoa comum: é um dos maiores helenistas do século XX, e as histórias que ele conta são mitos gregos. Como o universo foi criado e como se ordenou, de onde vieram os deuses, por que Zeus se tornou seu rei dos, como os homens puderam sobreviver frente aos deuses poderosos, porque os aqueus fizeram guerra aos troianos, porque Ulisses teve que viajar por dez anos para chegar à sua terra e o que o fez voltar para lá (linda, essa história!), como Dioniso (Baco) trata os humanos insolentes, qual foi o maior erro de Édipo (spoiler: tentar mudar o destino) e como Perseu matou a Medusa.
A escrita é leve, basicamente uma narrativa dos minutos, ainda que haja interpretações e conexões importantes feitas pelo autor (Vernant) que nos permite enxergarmo-nos nos mitos e, assim, nos conhecermos um pouco melhor.
É um livro sem notas de rodapé, sem bibliografia, cuja leitura, uma vez iniciada, é difícil de ser deixada de lado.

J’adore la mythologie grecque, et me faisais un plaisir de lire ce livre, mais ma déception a été grande. Je n’ai pas du tout compris l’auteur quant au choix des récits, c’est un mélange d’évolution chronologique et thématique. Il y a beaucoup de répétition, de paraphrase, on a l’impression que l’auteur fait une analyse des mythes en même temps qu’il les raconte, sans vraiment aller au bout de sa démarche ou de son raisonnement. L’écriture est lourde et trop compliquée pour des propos et analyses qui restent finalement sans grande pertinence.

Come nacquero il mondo e l’universo? Agli inizi era il Chaos, o Voragine. Per i greci, Chaos precede l’universo come noi lo conosciamo.
"Chaos è un vuoto oscuro dove niente può essere distinto. Si viene ghermiti da Voragine come dall’apertura di fauci immense in cui tutto può essere ingoiato e confuso come in un’unica notte indistinta".
Da Voragine nacque la terra, Gaia, e da essa il Cielo, Urano. Qui si delinea una netta differenza fra il mito e il pensiero filosofico successivo; infatti, per gli antichi Greci l’universo fu generato dal Chaos, mentre Aristotele nega l’esistenza del Chaos sostenendo invece l’eternità del cosmo, accordando alla natura anche un fine teleologico.
Gaia genera Cielo, o Urano, che la ricopre in ogni suo punto. Urano feconda la terra senza sosta, senza lasciarle tregua; Gaia contiene in sé i figli, che, a causa di Urano che la ricopre, non riescono ad uscire e Gaia dà a Crono il falcetto con il quale evira Urano, che quindi dopo un urlo spaventoso si allontana dalla terra, diventando il cielo che noi tutti conosciamo.
Attraverso i miti, i Greci hanno descritto anche i diversi aspetti psicologici dell’essere umano, che rimangono costanti nonostante i cambiamenti sociologici e culturali. Uno di questi è il conflitto fra generazioni e, più in generale, la paura degli anziani di essere sostituti dai giovani. Questa paura è ben espressa dal mito di Crono. Crono non solo evira il padre con un falcetto, ma è anche colui che, per paura di essere esautorato dai figli, li mangia prima che vengano al mondo e fa questo per salvaguardare il suo potere. Secondo Vernant, Crono è «il primo politico»; egli è una "divinità sospettosa, dio di astuzia, di menzogna e di doppiezza". Zeus riesce a liberare i fratelli intrappolati nel ventre paterno e di seguito dà luogo a «quell’universo organizzato», in cui ogni divinità ha la sua prerogativa, i suoi poteri, il suo dominio. Tale universo è nettamente contrapposto a Chaos, dove invece tutto è indistinto.
Nel libro, Vernant descrive anche gli antefatti della guerra di Troia, il personaggio leggendario di Ulisse e le sue avventure infinite dopo la fine del conflitto.
Un intero capitolo viene dedicato a Dioniso, ad Epido e ad Orfeo, miti questi che sono stati fondamentali per lo sviluppo del pensiero occidentale. Dioniso nella mitologia rappresenta il viaggiatore, l’altro, il diverso, «un Dio di nessun dove e di ogni luogo». Personalmente ho apprezzato molto il capitolo intitolato "Rifiuto dell’altro, identità perduta", nel quale l’Autore mette in evidenza l’importanza del confronto con il diverso per la formazione dell’identità personale. Descrivendo le donne tebane impazzite per l’influsso di Dioniso, dio che Penteo non vuole riconoscere perché rappresenta l’estraneo, l’altro da sé, Vernant afferma:
"Coloro che proclamano l’irrinunciabile difesa dei valori tradizionali, i cittadini greci sicuri della loro superiorità, precipitano nell’orrore e nel mostruoso. Come se, nella misura in cui un gruppo umano rifiuta di riconoscere l’altro, di fargli spazio, fosse questo gruppo stesso a diventare mostruosamente altro".
A differenza di altri saggi che raccontano i miti, la scrittura di Vernant è scorrevole, leggera e comprensibile; il narratore ha il pregio di focalizzare gli aspetti più importanti delle singole vicende e di estrapolarne il significato sempiterno. Attraverso lo studio dei miti possiamo esplorare e meglio conoscere i lati più profondi della nostra personalità, anche quelli più bui, senza però sentirci in colpa, perché essi non riguardano solo noi, ma l’intero genere umano. Questa è la ragione per cui raccomando la lettura di questo saggio.

Amb un estil narratiu directe i sense embuts, Vernant teixeix amb certa dificultat un ampli recull dels més importants mites de l'univer grec. I dic amb dificultat perquè, com diu en el prefaci, son llegendes amb les que entretenia al seu net abans d'anar a dormir, oralment, sense reflexionar, tal i com rajaven de les fonts de la memoria. Però el pas de la narració oral a l'escrita comporta una serie de "retallades" i canvis estructurals que obligen a l'autor a reformular alguns aspectes d'estil i forma, començant, sense anar més lluny, per desprendres de la performativitat del cos: veu, to, ritme, gest.
Dit això, Vernant ofereix un simple compendi mitològic. Filat de manera lògica i secuencial (cada capítol acaba fent de nexe amb el següent mite), abarcant des de la preexistencia de l'univers amb el Caos (buit obscur, una caiguda eterna al abisme), fins a Perseu decapitant la gorgona Medusa, presenta al lector una síntesi personal dels "relats procedents de la nit dels temps"més trascendents i rics de signficat. Aquest cop, però, aquets relats mítics no son cantats, si no fixats en text per la seva mà: indiscutible, com a bon helenista, coneixedor de tota l'obra literaria de la Grècia antiga (des de les epopeies homèriques al teatre dels tres grans tràgics, passant, per decomptat, per la épica Teogonía d'Hesíode), Vernant pren el paper d'aeda i ens narra la seva propia versió, gestada i mastegada durant tota la seva carrera, dels diferents mites que ens vol mostrar.
I no només ens els explica i descriu -no sempre amb el nivell de detall que hom podria esperar, però- si no també busca i remena en cada mite per oferir al lector la seva propia lectura, interpretació subjacent al fil narratiu de cada mite. En altres paraules, Vernant va a la cerca d'allò que ell mateix cita de Jacques Roubaud en el prefaci com a lo esencial del mite: "No son tan solo relatos. Contienen el tesoro de pensamientos, formas lingüísticas, imágenes cosmológicas, preceptos morales, etcétera, que constituyen la herencia común de los griegos de la época preclásica".

Sentaos amigos míos, sentaos y escuchaz la historia que os voy a contar.

érase una vez un tiempo de caos, donde no había nada y de pronto hubo algo. Ya no había caos, había también tierra y Eros. De la tierra brotó el cielo y las profunidades del avismo. Y a partir de entonces, del contacto entre ambos amantes, cielo y tierra, nacieron los dioses.

Contar historias fue la primera forma que hayamos de explicar lo desconocido. De donde venimos, por qué las cosas son así o qué normas debemos cumplir para vivir en sociedad.

Las hisztorias orales iban mutando de pueblo en pueblo, de narrador a narrador, creciendo cada vez más, aportando más detalles a esa historia.

Hasta un momento en el que de tanto contar historias, comenzamos a escribirlas. Así la historia quedó opacada en cierto modo por la belleza de la poesía, donde si cambiabas una palabra, la composición perdía su fuerza. Así la historia quedó muerta, cuando la novela conclía.

Esos mitos pasados tenían vida, se adaptaban a cada lugar. Aquellos ecos del pasado quedaron silenciados po la palabra escrita. Pero hoy volvemos a tenerlos a nuestra disposición, precisamente mediante un libro.

Jean-Pierre Vernant nos los trae recopilados en un libro cortito pero intenso. Explicándonos el origen del universo según la mitología griega, las luchas entre los dioses, el intento por conseguir una organización estable, los héroes, las trajedias, y las aventuras que hemos escuchado una y mil veces a lo largo de nuestra vida.

No son historias tal cual; sino más bien una recopilación de aquella tradición; pero sin duda es la mejor recopilación mitológica griega que me he leído.

Me ha encantado y a todos los que os interese este mundo deberíais darle una oportunidad. Se lee rapidísimo y sin duda lo vais a disfrutar.

Bon ben c'est intéressant tout ça, quelques histoires mythologiques très très bien racontées - vraiment j'aime beaucoup la façon d'écrire, même si sur le long terme (du livre) ça peut être un peu ronronnant pompeux, en faisant des pauses de temps en temps ça passe très bien.
Ce qui passe moins bien c'est la misogynie du truc. Alors, oui, c'est historique, c'est symbolique, c'était les Grecs antiques, c'est une autre époque, nanana nanana. N'empêche: 1/ c'est quand même horripilant à lire, 2/ il me semble avoir déjà lu des analyses bien différentes de certaines mythologies, qui faisaient une part bien plus belle aux femmes - je ne parle pas en quantité mais en qualité - alors qu'en est-il dans ce genre de situations du filtre inévitable de l'historien pétri de ses propres préjugés pourris? Je dis "l'historien", mais je veux dire "les historiens", je ne vise pas (que) l'auteur du présent ouvrage, et 3/ ben en fait l'auteur lui-même est quand même un peu beaucoup visé, parce que le côté symbolique des choses est assez peu abordé, au contraire, l'auteur semble se raccrocher sur les éléments mythologiques pour en faire des grandes théories sur l'humanité - c'est pas inintéressant, mais quand il s'agit de la situation relative des femmes et des hommes, permettez-moi de grincer quelque peu des dents.
Quelques pages avant la fin j'aurais pu mettre quatre étoiles à ce livre, laisser le bénéfice du doute à l'auteur, mais...

Nombreux sont ceux, dont je fais partie, qui ont dit que le mariage est à la fille ce que la guerre est au garçon. Dans une cité où il y a des femmes et des hommes, il y a une nécessaire opposition et une nécessaire intrication de la guerre et du mariage.

I was surprised at how many of these Greek Myths I'd actually in some form heard of before. I find it fascinating that they've been appropriated in some form by various works of literature and film such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Snow White, The Jungle Book, Percy Jackson, Macbeth, Orthello, Treasure Island, Hocus Pocus etc. I find it amusing that these Myths are accepted as such now but at the time they were as believable as religion is to others today; in fact even Jesus, with his returning from the dead, was an appropriation of a Greek God. Not that I'm surprised when Christianity was the face changer of many other religion's festivals and traditions. Perhaps like 'Chinese whispers' (forgive my non-pc term) the distortion of these stories was unintentional and misrepresented by those who sought oppressive power which then evolved into pacificity over the many years to where we find ourselves today. I enjoyed the chronology of these tales and with supplemented internet research it was easy to determine the hereditary lineage of the Gods; although this book would have benefited from a visual family tree. I was horrified by the description of women but yet again not surprised by the patriarchy of the times. It was also evident that the Greeks believed the Earth to be flat which amused me after suffering the obvious sexism; a blazing beacon of ignorance. That said there are deep thoughts seamed within the fabric of the narrative and for that I marvel for thinkers so limited in other areas.
