My goodness the Guardian wasn't half read by some insufferable p****s (IPs). Notes and Queries was a sometime interesting part of the paper which let people, some technical experts, provide the answers to nagging questions. Sadly more often it was a place where IPs with a cynical sense of life and an inflated sense of their intelligence could sneer at the vast majority of people in whose wake their personal laziness and arrogance had left them in life.
So a question such as "Where can I buy a Tony Blair coronation mug" was never intended to ask a nagging question but just to allow one IP to demonstrate that he didn't like Tony Blair , probably because the questioner wasn't as valued by society as much as they felt society should value them just because they went to university.
Similarly "With what tune did the Pied Piper lure the rats from Hamlyn(sic)" was a gift to someone who didn't know, didn't care but didn't understand the Last night of the Proms and without evidence so much as prejudice, erroneously labelled Prom goers as Tories (as if) who were 'blue rats' that could lured out by "land of hope and glory"
The ultimate for me was "why hasn't a similar device to a VCR been developed that could record radio programmes". When the main answer started "As the only decent programmes are on Radio 4" it was clear that an arse rather than an IP was hard at work trying to show off to his peers that they listen to radio 4, they are intelligent and the rest of you are dumb. Sadly for them not so dumb that we could set a a VCR to record radio programmes on many channels which were widely available through free view tvs and smart tvs .
So just when you get on a run of interesting questions you then come across an IP posting a virtue signalling load of twaddle for all his friends to guffaw about. I will confess, I guess some of thesecdicks were my friends in my left wing circles at the time. And whilst I stay on the left, I'm glad I barely see the sneering classes no more. After all I can't se that far in the distance when I turn my head and look back to the land of ideological purity before actually achieving anything and anyway they have more in common with the far right these days
