The Sisters of Sugarcreek

Rate this book
Many lives were changed the day a fire burned down Faith Community Church, devastating the small town of Sugarcreek, Ohio. Now a young Amish widow, Lydia Gruber faces an uncertain future. Her husband, a craftsman and volunteer firefighter, always took care of everything, keeping her isolated from others in their community. Without anyone or any skills, how will she survive? With the death of her beloved aunt Rose in the fire, single mom Jessica Holtz inherits Rose's Knit One Quilt Too cottage. Though determined to keep the shop open in her aunt's memory, she doesn't know the first thing about knitting and quilting and begins to see her aunt's dream slip through her fingers. When Liz Cannon lost her dear friend Rose, she also lost her partner in the Secret Stitches Society--the name they gave themselves while delivering gifts of hope to troubled folks in the dark of night. Liz convinces Jessica to keep the anonymous society going, despite the younger women's inadequacy with knitting and sewing needles. But soon Liz has problems of her own as the life she has rebuilt for herself begins to crumble again. When Liz and Jessica choose Lydia for their first mission, the three women cross paths and form an unlikely friendship in the aftermath of tragedy. As they walk together through triumph and heartbreak--through grief and new chances at love--they begin to discover that with friends by your side, a stitch of hope can be found anywhere.

Cathy Liggett is a New York Times bestselling author and an ACFW Carol award winner. She is also an Ohio girl who never dreamed her writing journey would take her across the world and to Amish country, too. But she's learned God's plans for our lives are often more creative than the ones we imagine for ourselves. That includes re-meeting her husband at a high school reunion and marrying three months later--over forty years ago. She enjoys visiting kids and grandkids, spoiling the family pup, and knitting too (if the pattern isn't too tough!).

I first chose this book to review because it had knitting on the cover. I am mad for all things yarn related. Then I noticed that it mentioned Sugarcreek in the title. This was the name of the church camp I attended when I was growing up. So it had two things going for it in the first place.

Then I began to read the story and the Sisters of Sugarcreek is set in a town which I visited when I was in our youth group. Oh my, I knew I had to love this book. And I did.

There are three women that the story centers around. Lydia Gruber, a young Amish woman, who just lost her husband and is unsure of what she will need to do in order to survive.

Then there is Jessica Holtz. Along with her son Charlie, her life has been turned upside down when her favorite aunt died and left her Rose's Knit One Quilt Too Cottage. She and her son move upstairs to the apartment and she runs the store, even through she doesn't know anything about knitting or quilting.

Finally there is Liz. Jessica's Aunt Rose was Liz's best friend. They also gave hope in the form of anonymous gifts as the Secret Stitches Society. Jessica and Liz want to keep the society going. Their first mission is to help Lydia. These three become friends and together learn how to place one foot in front of the other as they deal with grief and love.

Cathy Liggett developed characters that I could relate with and I could not wait to read each page to see what would happen with these ladies. I definitely enjoyed this book tremendously.

I was given this book by Tyndale in exchange for my honest review.

I did not want to put this book down. I laughed and cried during this book. I loved Lydia , Jessica and Liz. Two Englishers and an Amish woman. They became very good friends once Rose passed away and Lydias husband died. All three women learn to live their lives again in new ways. This is a great book. I received a copy of this book from Tyndale blog network and am giving a review of my own free will.

If you like a story with all the ends wrapped up like a feel-good bow, this book is for you! I loved the characters' idea of a group to secretly help other people. Amish and non-Amish characters are friends in a small town, and connected via a quilt/craft shop. Skimmed this in print.

Sugar Creek is a small town with an Amish community. This book follows Jessica, Lydia and Liz and they deal with inheriting a Stick and Knitting Store, deal with a spousal death and divorce and dating.
All three of these women are very different, and I found their friendship heart warming. Each brings their own story in and become friends, workmates and confidants.
I enjoyed this book. It dealt with life and friendships at a time when I needed a feel good book

I picked the wrong day to read this. I had a hard time staying focused on it. I like the cover and the knitting in the story. There is also some quilting, which was also enjoyable. There is romance and friendship and loss and grief and moving on. I liked Lydia's story. Her's was the most interesting. I also liked Jessica's romance. I like a second chance story. I didn't like Liz's story. Her's was boring.

Three women all lose someone they love in a church fire, and must cope with their loss. Jessica inherits her late aunt's knitting and quilting shop, and has no idea how to run the store. She befriends Liz, one of her aunt's friends, and a young Amish widow, Lydia, who help her. I thought this book was very good. I am looking forward to more books by the author.

This story of three very different women, one Amish and so lonely and in need of friendship and love, and two Englischers of different ages bond together as sisters in Christ to be there for each other for the good and the bad. Beautiful!!! This is what Christianity is supposed to be about. I don’t care what denomination you are, if you belong to Jesus, you belong to me!

This review is also available on my blog, Read Till Dawn.

This was just the sort of book I needed: fluffy yet meaningful, silly yet sweet, and full of drama that took me away from the drama in my own life.

This is a very . . . busy book. There are three main characters, all of whom have their own lives to live and storylines unique from each other. They're all brought together, in a roundabout way, by a church fire from before the start of the book that stole huge chunks of each of their lives: Lydia's husband, Jess' aunt who raised her, and Liz's church community. It was very interesting to watch them all pick up the pieces, struggling in different ways as they each began to heal and move forward from the tragedy.

But to be honest, I wish the focus had stayed on grieving and moving on and all that sort of stuff. As it went along, other storylines began to be thrown in that I didn't find nearly as interesting. Each woman gets a love interest of sorts, and of varying seriousness. I thought Lydia's potential connection with her neighbor, a very nice single man, was nice. It's not given much attention, and for good reason–she's still processing through her husband's death from the fire. I appreciated that a door was opened for her in the future, but that things were pushed so quickly that Lydia would have seemed callous about her first husband. As for Jess, hers was definitely my second favorite of the three romantic storylines. I liked Derek, Jess's childhood best friend who moves back to Sugarcreek and wants to strike up the same easy friendship they used to have. The cynical side of me thinks that he's a little too perfect, and that Jess sure gets flushed and self-conscious an awful lot around him for an old childhood friendship, and that if they were really so perfect for each other they would have figured this out long before they got to their mid-thirties. But, hey, why be critical when you can enjoy yourself instead? If I let myself ignore those things, then I can see Jess and Derek's rekindled relationship for what it is: a sweet love story about childhood best friends who were always meant for each other.

As for the third romantic storyline, I have to say that I didn't much like Liz's. Her love interest, Daniel, is just as pseudo-perfect as Derek but doesn't have a sweet backstory to excuse away that fact. He's the repairman who agrees to fix Liz's kitchen ceiling (because apparently this woman is so helpless without a man in her life that she didn't notice the ceiling was literally about to collapse? Huh?). They strike up a friendship, pour their hearts out to each other over plaster of paris, and proceed to go through a dramatic series of "will they or won't they" that was too much for my stomach. I wound up flipping through a lot of their scenes, because they just felt forced and didn't interest me the way the rest of the book did.

Oh, and I can't discuss this much but the book also includes some interesting themes about both gender roles in marriage and childhood sexual assault. I'm not sure that I exactly agree with how the former was addressed, but I thought the latter was handled very delicately.

Anyway, this is getting rather long so I'll wrap it up. If you're interested, the publisher also sent me the link to some goodies related to the book that you can check out. Here they are:

A fire claiming the lives of Rose and Henry devastates the small town of Sugarcreek, Ohio. Jessica inherits her late aunt's store, Rose’s Knit One Quilt Too cottage, but struggles to run the store. Lydia, a young Amish widow, helps out at the store one day and along with Rose's best friend, Liz, a friendship is formed between the three women. Despite the women all continuing to grieve for their loved ones, they seek to help out others and continue the good works of the Secret Stitches Society. With good friends by their side, each woman is better able to face life's ups and downs and hopefully find the courage to find love a second time around.

The heart of this book is the friendships between the three women. It was refreshing to read about women that were truly supportive of one another and wanted to help others as well. At first glance you might think they wouldn't have much in common due to the fact one is Amish and another is twice the age of the other two but that just made their unlikely friendship even more special.

If you are on the fence about purchasing this book due to it falling in the Christian fiction category, I urge you to give it a shot. I normally avoid that genre because I had this fear that too much focus would be given to religion and I would find the plot lacking. This is an example of a well written book where the religious aspects of the story fit in naturally.

I received a free copy of this book from Crazy4Fiction and that is my honest review.

A cozy story about 3 women who form a tight bond at a transitional time in their lives. Lovely setting in small town Ohio and a celebration of Amish values. This one isn't a page-turner, but the characters quietly meet their challenges strengthened by their shared friendship. It was all a bit like Amish comfort food served to your table at the Dutch Valley Restaurant right there in Sugarcreek while looking out the window at all that pastoral countryside. Ah!

I wasn't really sure what to expect when I started reading this book. This is the first I've read from Cathy Liggett, and the plot was different then the typical Amish fiction books I am used to. Let me say this, I am so glad that I decided to give it a shot because I absolutely loved it! This will not be the last that Ms. Liggett has seen of me!

First I have to comment on the interesting plot. For three woman, one of whom is Amish, to come together as friends was so interesting to me. Their love and commitment to their friendship was evident throughout the book. They were so quick to help one another and overcome any obstacle that came their way. They didn't even mind meddling a little but when need be. Their story made my laugh, cry, and really enjoy reading about the value of friendship.

Of course, what is a good book without some kind of love story in it? I appreciated that the author did not make these three loves stories the main focus. That being said, they were excellent stories. No rush in any of them at all. My favorite was Lydia and her late husband. I know if you've read the story you'll wonder why. You only saw clues throughout the story to what their marriage was like, and how difficult it must have been. In reading this you get some ideas of what the problems may have been. Then comes the plot twist!! No, I won't tell you, you'll have to read, but it makes you look at their marriage in a completely different way. I felt Lydia was such a strong character, and while she may not have felt that way, it was really just her being so humble. She made such progress throughout the story in coming into her own, I do hope there is more to come for her in the future!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This inspirational romance novel involves three women who build a strong bond of friendship through the ups and downs of their lives in smalltown Sugarcreek. They become each other's support system and source of encouragement through some rough patches in this journey we call life.

One of the things I liked most about this book was that the three women came from such different backgrounds--two widows, one divorced single mother; one Amish, one Christian, one searching for answers regarding her faith; and one business owner, one realtor, and one who has never worked outside of the home.

One of the things they have in common is the fact that they are all grieving the loss of a spouse, friend, or relative. The other thing they have in common is that they love to create gifts of quilts and knitted items for those in need of a little comfort in their community. They call themselves the 'Secret Stitches Society' and they deliver care packages to grieving, traumatized, or ill members of Sugarcreek--in the dark of night.

Truthfully, they had me at 'Stitches' because I love to sew, quilt, and stitch for charity as much as I am able. But as the story moves forward, I discovered a many-layered plot with great characters! The spirit of kindness and the Golden Rule is evident throughout this book. I will read more of Cathy Liggett's books in the future.

Recommended for fans of inspirational, Amish, and Christian fiction; clean fiction; sweet romance; and smalltown fiction.

Although I enjoyed the book it was kind of hard to get into and in my opinion was a little bit long. Many of the pot. Could’ve been covered in the shorter book but it was also very interesting and well written. I liked all of the women and I like the idea of having two of them be involved in a secret stitches society rather than all three of them at the beginning because it was neat to watch that recruit one. I felt especially sorry for Lydia and later for Henry. I also enjoyed watching Liz develop her relationship with Daniel because watching somebody get back on their feet after being a long time widow is especially heartwarming. And of course seeing a single mother find love after the betrayal of her husband was also satisfying. None of this is really a shocker to be honest or a spoiler because these are things that we find out early in the novel that will probably happen because hey it’s a romance Donnell and of course the three women are going to find their happily ever after. But how they all relate I’m gone just a little bit differently in different ways was interesting as well. There were times that I really let my attention wander in the book but it always came back and was able to catch up on where we were in the storyline. Like I said in my opinion the book was a little bit on the long side and meandered a little but it was also a good read. If you’re looking for something wholesome and a good Christian read this is definitely a good option.

This was a charming, feel good kind of book and it has a spiritual side to it that touched me. The setting is Sugarcreek, Ohio and the town consists of Amish and Englishmen. Lots of great characters in it and an opportunity to see how Amish live.
One of the main characters is an Amish woman named Lydia Gruber who is a young widow. She lives out of town by herself now. Her husband just recently fell to a tragic death at the fire of their church. She has never been on her own and she is fearful of this outcome.
She becomes great friends with two English women, Jessica and Liz who are on their own, but spunky and courageous.
Jessica is a divorced woman and has a young son. She has recently inherited her aunt’s knitting cottage when her aunt too, dies in the church fire. She knows nothing about knitting but feels a strong connection to it because of her aunt’s passion for it. Will she be able to sustain it?
Liz the third woman is more middle aged and a good mentor for these two women. The three of them get themselves into some real interesting situations and have great fun dealing with quilting, knitting and the cottage shop. They certainly brought a chuckle or two to me. By the end of the book they all three have new chances at love, and it all ends very nicely with new friendships that have bonded for a lifetime. A Stitch of hope can be found anywhere!!

Page after page I became caught up in The Sisters of Sugarcreek. I was so glad I decided not to hurry to read this book and make my usual deadline for a book review a week. I found myself relaxing and enjoying every word as I became entwined with the lives of these women.

They each faced problems that we all can relate to. Either we know someone or we have personally went through one of the struggles that the women are faced with. In the midst of their upsetting trials they relied on God's help and the friendship they formed. All three of the women were stronger than they knew.

Then they banded together to bring joy and a some hope to people in need. This was my favorite part of the book. To think beyond your problems and give to someone else is beyond special. The gifts were not extravagant but they were thoughtful and that's what counts.

I was gifted this book by Tyndale House Publishers. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed here are my own.

My grandma found a list of yarn/craft centered books in our local paper, and thought I might like to read them as I crochet. When she told me about this book, she mentioned that there was a Sugarcreek, Ohio (she's from Ohio originally), but she didn't know if it was the same one. When I read the description of the book and saw that it did indeed take place in Sugarcreek Ohio I decided to read it first, thinking of my grandma.
For some reason, I thought the list of books she gave me was of cozy mysteries, but this book is definitely not a cozy mystery. It is actually filled with romance and religion based topics, both of which I don't generally gravitate towards (I mainly read murder mysteries and thrillers). However, I found this book to be delightful. I really enjoyed it! It was cute and sweet, and I enjoyed reading about the developing relationships between the women, and their love interests. It was exactly what I needed to read at that time.
I am glad I can give my grandma a positive review of this book.

This book was fabulous! If you love stories of friendship and community this is the book for you! The three ladies, Jessica, Lydia and Liz are all different ages, different social backgrounds and have different ways to worship. The one thing they have in common is the passion for helping people in need and each has suffered a great loss. The story grows as these ladies become more than friends, they become sisters of the heart. Such a beautifully written story of just the right amount of friendship and a twist of love interests for the ladies. They had me captivated from the start of the book!

I absolutely adored this book. It was what I call "a good story", full of good feelings and friendship. I love how the author developed the characters and I would definitely read more of her books. A great read with a good cup of tea and a blanket. Curl up and enjoy the journeys of Jessica, Liz and Lydia.

I am also so grateful to Tyndale House for an advanced copy of this book.

The Sisters of Sugarcreek is a warm, cozy novel, although somewhat slow and predictable. The book tells the story of 3 very different women who come together and form a deep friendship after a tragedy in their community. The storyline is sweet, and the characters were very likable, but because the story moved so slowly, I didn't feel very compelled to pick the book up very often and it took me longer than usual to complete. I also knew what the ending was going to be after reading only a few chapters, but it didn't interfere with the enjoyment of the book.
I think this book would be enjoyed by individuals who like light, "clean" romances and lovers of Amish and Christian fiction.
Overall, a pleasant read.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. Apologies to the author/publishing house, as I moved just after receiving this (and one other book), placed it in a moving box, and just recently found it. Perhaps there is a bigger force in hand though, as I have recently read a few books that gave me better insight into the lives of the Amish. This helped me really attach to one of the characters in The Sisters of Sugarcreek.
As I neared the end of the book I found myself reading it more slowly because I wanted it to last longer. I can see this being a series that readers settle into and enjoy for years.

The Sisters of Sugarcreek by Cathy Liggett was such a sweet read. I loved all three of these women's stories and really hope that the author lets us dive into their world again. The mixture of these three women's sweet friendship is woven perfectly with the more serious topics that this book covers. Liz, Jessica, and Lydia all come from different backgrounds that might make there friendship seem unlikely but through one town tragedy they come together and find out they aren't too different.

5 outof 5.

I was anxious about the predicted big snow storm we were getting and I wanted a nice, easy, relaxing read to get me thru it. I went to my tbr bookshelf and picked out this gem. I love reading novels with Amish characters. This book was a perfect choice. It had a little drama, a little romance, but so much more. I live about an hour and a half from Sugarcreek so it was even more meaningful to me. We have visited there and the surrounding Amish communities before. I will be looking for more books by Cathy Leggett.

I loved “the Sisters of Sugarcreek” by Cathy Liggett. It is the story of three women who have suffered devastating losses. Two of the women are part of a secret society that tries to bring cheer to those in need - spiritually, financially, or personally by delivering gifts to those in need anonymously. One of the members of the Secret Stitches Society has passed away in a deadly fire that also took the life of a volunteer, the Amish husband of Lydia. Jessica inherits her Aunt Rose’s knit and quilt shop although she doesn’t know how to do either. Liz was a partner in the shop along with Rose and misses her terribly. When they secretly gift Lydia, they unknowingly bring her into their fold. These three women who have lost so much, decide to continue the good works of the secret society.

I thought this book and its storyline was a message of hope and love in the aftermath of terrible tragedy. Lydia was totally inept at anything except keeping house and taking care of her husband. He was a strong minded man who thought a woman’s place was in the kitchen. Liz and Jessica come along at just the right time to help her come into her own. Liz and Jessica and Lydia also are given second chances at new love in their lives. I loved the dialogue among these three. I thought the book was a very comforting story. I highly recommend it.

When single mother Jessica inherits her aunt's yarn and quilting store after a devastating church fire, Amish widow Lydia and real estate agent Liz enter her life and help her keep the store running as she learns the trade.
The first two-thirds of the novel are fantastic, but devolve into the "bonnet romance" formula by the end. Still, the characters are interesting and not quite in Christian fiction mold, and the setting is vividly drawn. If this is a genre you like, this is one of the best.

The Sisters of Sugarcreek by Cathy Liggett is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The cover is what caught my attention and the description peaked my interest. What starts as a story of 3 women brought together by a tragic event in their community becomes a story of the beauty of lasting hope and friendship. It has elements of faith, love, family and community. Sugarcreek is a town I'd love to visit! This is the first book I've read by Cathy Liggett, but I hope it won't be the last.

This is my first book by this author and I will check out more after reading this book. This book was wonderfully written and follows the lives of three women from different backgrounds who find themself pulled together as fast friends during a difficult time in thier life. It's heartwarming, heartbreaking and in the end uplifting to see how God's plan works for the good once again if we just keep the faith. I reccomend this book.

I saw this book and I just immediately KNEW my mom would want to read it. Firstly, we are from Ohio so anything midwestern is awesome to us. Thanks to the fact that I belong to the Tyndale Blog Network, I was able to get this book for review.

Here's what my mom had to say about The Sisters of Sugarcreek by Cathy Liggett:

"A tragedy happened in Sugarcreek, Ohio when a fire burned down Faith Community Church of Sugarcreek. It changed the lives of a lot of people that day, and two lives were lost - both Lydia’s husband, Henry, and Jessica’s Aunt Rose. Lydia and Jessica must find a way of earning a living for themselves.

Henry had kept Lydia isolated and she did not know many of the Amish community around them. Lydia is now an Amish widow and must find a way to support herself. Jessica quit the job that she loved and moved to Sugarcreek. Jessica has become the owner of Aunt Rose’s Knit One Quilt Too Cottage which is so popular in this little town. Jessica does not know much about knitting or being a manager of a small business. She has to make a go of it to support her small son Cole and herself.

Liz Cannon a widow who works as a real estate agent was Aunt Rose’s best friend together they had some secret activities that they would do to provide hope to someone that they thought needed it.

A woman needs girlfriends. These three ladies becomes friends and the story takes you on a journey of their friendship and their lives. On this journey you share the laughter, the worries, the loneliness, and the romances, everyday problems in which the reader can easily relate too. Cathy Liggett writing from a Christian point of view shows the reader the events that actually changes the lives of these three. This is a book that you cannot put down. I felt this was an uplifting book and helps one handle difficult situations. I look forward to reading more of Cathy Liggett’s books."

Love, love, loved this book! The lives of the 3 women-who range in age from young to old, and proves that you're never to old or young to learn a thing or two about life-in the story are well woven together, and I enjoyed every minute spent reading this book! Am looking forward to perhaps more about Lydia in books to come.
