I really enjoyed this book and also enjoyed the author's idea of looking to unexpected places for spiritual lessons. One of the things the author talks about it this book is turning away from technology and paying more attention to the things around us and God's lessons in those things. I think this is something that can be applied to almost everyone's life since we live in a world where technology is so dominant these days. I really enjoyed his writing style and how easy it was to read. There are 21 chapters that deal with different topics and different spiritual lessons. Each chapter also has several different scriptures listed that go along with the topics, as well as a section at the end of each chapter titled "God's Take" and "A Dose of Grace". "God's Take" is scripture that goes along with the chapter's topics and "A Dose of Grace" deals with how to apply the topic discussed in the chapter to your own life. There are a great of stories and even pictures throughout the book the help the reader connect with each topic and apply it to their own life.

Overall, I really liked this book and think it is something that is easily applied to most people's lives. Most of us could benefit from disconnecting from technology a bit and being more present in our lives, whether that is with our spouse, kids, family or friends. I enjoyed the author's writing style, as well as the scripture in each chapter that went along with the topic, which I found to be very useful.

Thank you to the publisher for sending me an advanced reading copy of this book.

What wonderful places to turn to for Spiritual lessons....dogs, children, critters and the unexpected. I love when this happens and so does Dave Burchett.

In Waking Up Slowly the author shows us how much more we can connect to God by turning away from our technology, which we seemed always hooked up to, and look around for these moments from God.

His down-to-earth writing style helped this connect with me from page one. It is filled with stories that move and moments of grace. I think this would make a good book to have on everyone's shelves and it would be a great book to give to others.

I was given this book by Tyndale Publishing in exchange for my honest review. And I am so thankful.

Quick refreshing read. It's amazing how fast paced and technically driven our society has become. I am proud to say I keep things slower and simple and take the time to appreciate life's gifts on a daily basis. This book helps to reinforce that philosophy and I think anyone would take away some extremely valuable lessons after reading it.

Waking Up Slowly is David Burchett’s personal journey to discover God’s presence more intimately, by disconnecting himself from all the technologies that took up his time (phones, internet and so on) and using that time more effectively by being present to his family, to his friends, and ultimately to God.

Burchett is a successful sports director in television. He is married with three grown boys, several grandchildren and at least 2 labradors. One of them, Maggie, features in this book, providing him with insights into better ways of living in God’s presence.

I felt very challenged and encouraged by this book. I really enjoyed Burchett’s honest, down-to-earth, non-academic approach to writing. His style allows the reader to feel like he is really understanding where the normal everyday person is situated, especially in relation to the temptation that modern technology provides for us. One way I gauge how good a book is is by the number of highlights and notes that I make. I must think this is an absolutely brilliant book as I highlighted, and made notes of, lots of the book. I really felt God speaking to me through it, encouraging me to take on many of the activities that Burchett had at the end of each chapter. As it is now Lent, where people traditionally give up something for the period leading to Easter, this book’s premise of giving up technology is an apt one.

The book contains 21 chapters, each focussing on a single aspect that Burchett found very helpful in addressing how to be more present to his family, and to God. At the end of each chapter he has a section called “God’s Take” where a scripture passage for reflection is followed by “A Dose of Grace”, with Burchett challenging us to do something. In the last chapter that challenge is to find some time to give God our undivided and silent presence, to simply speak with, and be with, God. The chapters are easy to read and often completed without realising it. This is the mark of an accomplished writer.

“How have you woken up to the ways God reveals Himself in your life?” I’ve seen God revealed through music (especially church music), books (any, but particularly Christian ones like this), and through simply talking with God and listening to Him.

Thank you, Mr Burchett, for blessing the world with a great, thought-provoking, honest book. I have been challenged and loved throughout the reading of it.

I received a complimentary copy of the book for review purposes from Tyndale House.

Author Dave Burchett takes us on a real life journey of waking up to Gods miracles each and every day. He uses examples from his own life, from his grandchildren, his wife, and his beloved Maggie, the retriever, to show us that God is around us each day, we only need to wake up and see His glory all around us. Dave talks about disconnecting from social media.. what? Let go of our phones, tablets and computers? It's about getting to know God. I love this sentence from the book " My busyness does not please God. My faith pleases Him. And I can't have faith and trust in someone I am too busy to know." That hits home for me. It's about getting rid of the "clutter", slowing down and getting to know God, trusting in Him and being still enough to see how He is working in your life.
I think this is one of the best books I have ever read. I love Dave's honesty, integrity and real life truths he shares in the book. His writing style draws you in and makes you feel that you are not alone in your journey to know God more intimately. I don't think there is a page in the book where I didn't highlight something Dave said or a Scripture he shared. It's a journey you won't be sorry you took... it's time to wake up ( and you can do it slowly). I was graciously given this book by Tyndale house in exchange for a honest review.

My Review:

It is hard to learn our lessons about life sometimes. The smallest lessons are usually the ones that need to be learned the most. In Dave Burchett's book entitled Waking Up Slowly the author begs of us to live in the moment. Don't get so busy that life that you are chasing is actually passing you by. I absolutely love books that challenge me to be a better person and to live better, especially spiritually. And this book is one of those books.

My favorite chapter was Getting Outside of Yourself. I really enjoyed the authors thoughts and commentary on the subject of Paul and contentment. I love to serve at my church. I always have even as a little girl. I just absolutely love it. I feel that this is something God placed in me and I love the freedom to do it. Some time ago someone that I helped regularly with church events and activities told me not so politely that they didn't need or want my help anymore. Needless to say I was devastated. So incredibly hurt.

I went to God about it and did for several months. I have to help. I love to do this for my Father. I love to serve people. I was made for this. I still do not understand to this day why this individual said these things to me. But I had to immediately nip it in the bud before bitterness turned to anger which in turn would turn to hate. God chose for us a life of servant hood. We are to serve those around us and to have a smile on our face while we are doing it.

But as the author points out, sometimes thats not so easy and this is where we really have to rely on the Master. I absolutely love the life lessons that the author went over in his book and using his own lessons was very smart. This was a great read!

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the author. All opinions are my own.

A review of Dave Burchett's 'Waking Up Slowly.'
Publishers: Tyndale House Publisher

I received the book from Tyndale to review.

Everyday life can offer a plethora of moments - emotional filled moments. Some are good, some are bad and some are just, well, just moments. In the middle of these moments, we also are faced with miracles from God.

Dave Burchett with a fresh openness to those things and an honesty about his own responses offers readers a unique perspective on 'seeing' what God offers us.

Utilizing personal examples taken from his life, from experiences with his grandchildren, his wife and his sweet precious Maggie - his Retriever, Burchett shows us that God is with us everywhere.

All we have to do is get in tune with God and see what He is doing around us.

There are many passages which really stepped on my toes- Burchett's wisdom in offering suggestions about disconnecting from things that distract us from getting to know God is on the money.

Woven in with his real-life experiences are sensible ideas, offerings of how to find peace and scriptures to use as guides. There is nothing wrong with having a simple life.

This is one book that I would give as gifts to friends and coworkers and associates.

Waking Up Slowly by Dave Burchett has a lot of thought provoking gems but I found it hard to delve into for all the rabbit trails. Of course, I tend to be a cut the chase person and skim through a lot of added dialogue.
I will say I was expecting a light engaging story including antidotes of their dog that tickled your imagination, much like Jesus's parables. This book is more of a man's journey finding God's grace.
This book is well worth the read, if you can get past the rabbit trails and dig out the jewels.

I received this book as part of the Goodreads Giveaway Program. Author Dave Burchett writes about experiences he shares with everyday life, his dog, grandchildren, and other animals and uses scripture to find the goodness and spiritual meaning. He invites the reader to stop and enjoy everyday life and get rid of the "busyness" and the technology in their lives. Anyone that enjoys bringing scripture in their everyday life will enjoy this read.

This is my first book by Dave Burchett, but it was great. He has an ability to dig inside of issues that everyone seems to be struggling with and bring out a simple way to focus on how to deal with them. We're all flawed and sometimes we think we're the only ones dealing with something. Not so. Burchett's suggestions at the end of each chapter are well worth re-reading on a regular basis and continuing to work at.

I was thrilled to find this as I love dogs, have a wonderful pack and believe they have taught me many life lessons - whether they wanted to or I wanted them to or not. Some of the chapters were fresh, delightful and eye opening, some were so so and others seemed repetitious. I think I will put it up so I can give it another try - or not.

Such a great book about priorities and living for God. Really loved the thought that by not sharing our burdens with others we are not allowing them to minister to us (audio book)

It’s been so long since I read a Christian book and it just feels nice. I set this 21-days reading challenge to understand and to live day-by-day all these wonderful topics about slowly waking up. The title itself is mesmerizing because it personally refers to us people who depress, addicted to social media platforms, phone, and drugs and etc, sad, grieving and all that it covers. It taught us that we can slowly wake up from all these nightmares through our faith in God.

The author Dave Burchett is compassionate and God fearing person. And I love how he affects me to devote more time and myself to God.

The book is pure motivation. I want to congrats myself for not reading the whole book is sitting instead I slowly read it. Good job self!

“But this has been an amazing personal experiment, and the process has changed me. I see people hypnotized by their phones, and I feel regret for what they are missing.”

— I am guilty here but I trying to set limitations and just live in the present and physical place. Social media platforms are just temporary happiness but being your loved one is unsurpassable and the greatest of all. As support for this, I deleted my posts, some profile pictures and cover photos and just made my FB a blank space never to be filled up. It’s just fake platform and it will not define who you are. I focused on being a person I am proud when they meet and interacted with me personally.I hope you do this, too.

A wonderful book that I would recommend to anybody who needs to be reminded of God's ongoing presence in our lives! God doesn't want us to be busy 24/7 but rather hopes that we will find time to be with him, to be still and learn to hear him whisper to us in the stillness. When we tune out the noise around us and quiet down, we can find peace and renewed energy to go out into the world and share God's love with those we encounter in our lives. Sometimes it takes something seemingly small like the trust of a pet or the joy of a child to point us back to God and the path he has in mind for us.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book.

Waking Up Slowly by Dave Burchett was a good read. It’s the kind of book that doesn’t give any information that you don’t inherently know or have, but it helps you see things in a different light. It offers anecdotes from the author sharing times in his life when he paid attention to the little things and the lessons he learned along the way. He then ties in scripture passages and Biblical examples to illustrate his revelations.
Each chapter discusses a different theme and while there is a backdrop of a story about the author trying to rid himself of his smartphone addiction, the chapters seem like they can be read out of order based upon which life lesson speaks to you at any given time. You could even consider reading 1 chapter a week and trying to implement the “dose of grace” call to action that the author provides at the end of each chapter.

I can't do it. I can't do it. Nope, nope nope.

I am in by no means a religious person. Actually, I've studied/read multiple different religions and I can honestly say I don't tie myself down to believing one religion is more correct over other or even choose to follow one select religion.

However, I can tell you that I've had many spiritual experiences, but the great thing about that is I don't have to reference that this is the handy work of some higher spiritual being through religion. To me, this book really, really, REALLY emphasizes everything through a Christian or Catholic base of religion. Meaning, in my own opinion is that this book is a lot more religious than it leads on. Which after I got to chapter six, I was just so done with this book. I couldn't even enjoy the spiritual lessons because it felt like I was sitting in church being judged all over again.

description

When I read books about spiritual experiences, I don't want to hear someone referencing religious concepts on every single damn page. You can talk about your spiritual experiences without having to constantly reference things from the Bible on every page, almost every couple of five to six sentences. To me, this feels like religious overkill on a book that could have been really inspiring while still having religious aspects to it.

All in all, I believe this book is more suited for people who are really heavily devoted to their religion and live their life devoted through the Bible, but this book was just ruined for me by the overwhelming influence of constant religious references and constant preaching of God and Jesus. For me, that's overkill. When I first started reading I was excited, but by the time I reached chapter six (not even finishing the book) I felt so much religious pressure that I couldn't continue reading this book.
