I picked this book off the shelf specifically because of the beautiful border collies on the back cover. I knew my daughter would love it. There's so much more to this story though.

Little Sara's dad is ill and her mother explains they'll have to go alone to the hills to feed their sheep. They set off on the journey with their dogs and Sara's trusty plush teddy. A snow storm arrives, and in their haste to leave, Sara's teddy is mistakingly left behind.

The country setting certainly pulled us in with all the beautiful illustrations of the nature around them. I appreciated the loving family relationships and care toward the animals in the story. This is not just a book for dog lovers. It's an enjoyable read.

After reading this lovely book many times to my own daughter, it still brings me joy. Now I am reading it to my granddaughter! I still love the wonderful pencil illustrations and the story of Teddy, Sara and snow.

A sweet English tale for your little one with sheep, snow and a teddy bear.

Ages: 2 - 5

Cleanliness: there is a small child in her underwear and her shirt is pulled up.

I read this book as a bedtime story with my grandchildren. The pictures are beautiful, and show the excitement of snowfall. Since Sara's daddy is sick, she gets to help her mom feed the sheep. When snow distracts Sara as they head home from the barn, Sara discovers that she has lost her teddy bear. Luckily the family dog knows why Sara is so upset, and retrieves Teddy from the sheep stall. Once Sara and bear are reunited, she happily runs home to tell her daddy of her adventures.

My granddaughter (age 4) loved the story and had me read it again immediately. She was happy that Sara's dog was so smart and knew where to find Teddy.

The illustrations are very realistic and tell the story nicely even without the text.

This is George's current favorite. He calls the book, "Sarah," as in, "let's read 'Sarah.'" Sarah is the protagonist of the story. In it, Sarah, her mom, her teddy bear, and their dogs go to feed some sheep in a snow storm while Sarah's dad is home ill. Sarah loses her teddy bear while feeding the sheep, but (spoiler alert) her dogs find and retrieve teddy from the snow. This book really resonates with him, as do most books with snow and dogs and sentimentality, and I think it's a pretty good one, too.

In First Snow, written and beautifully illustrated by Kim Lewis, a sheepfarmer’s wife and young daughter climb the hill to feed the sheep. As the season’s first snow begins to fall, Sara is excited, but drops her teddy in their hurry to get home. What has become of him?  What makes this book so wonderful are the illustrations, which lovingly and realistically depict a farm and family in England’s Northumberland. (If you enjoy this book, you should also check out Lewis’s Floss, about a border collie.)

What a wonderful story with gorgeous realistic illustrations! One wintry morning Mommy and Sarah climb the hill to feed the sheep for Daddy. They take their two border collies and Sarah's teddy bear with them. When a snow squall comes up Sarah's bear goes missing but they have to quickly find their way home. Beautiful story with a lovely ending.

This is a beautifully illustrated picture book with a sweet but simple story of a mother, young child and their beloved bear as they go out to tend the sheep while father is ill.
