The Exiles return to prime Earth, only to find it not so prime anymore. So not only do the Exiles have House of M to deal with, they have to face the most powerful mutant on the planet! Collects Exiles #69-74.
Antony J. L. Bedard is an American writer and editor who has worked in the comic book industry from the early 1990s through the present. He is best known for his work at CrossGen Comics, where he was under exclusive contract, and for his run writing Marvel Comics X-Men spin-off Exiles.
This volume was an absolute blast. I wasn’t exactly overjoyed to be revisiting the ‘House 0f M’ reality again, as I didn’t think much of it the first time, but Tony Bedard did great things with it and nicely closed Beak’s Exiles story-arc. It also gave the team their new arch-nemesis and they couldn’t have made a better choice!
Once they’re done in the ‘House of M’ the team chases the aforementioned Big Bad to the New Universe! As a card-carrying child of the ‘80s, this was absolutely perfect for me, and Bedard clearly remembers the New Universe as fondly as I do.
To top things off, with the arrival of Paul Pelletier, this book finally has an artist who can do the stories justice. Long may his stay on the book last.
An attempt to finally return Beak home tosses the Exiles into the House of M - and unleashes the deadly Proteus upon reality! The team must now track down this warping villain, jettisoning to the New Universe and beyond to follow. My only regret? The loss of Mimic...
Exiles got to House of M, Beak's home. And its not a good thing to do. Some goo character stuff with Beak and you really feel for him. The 2nd story with Proteus is ok, but not as good as you would think.
Good stuff, I always thought Proteus wasn’t a big enough villain, with his powerset and his cold heart he should be more of a threat, love how he’s depicted here.
Exiles continues to be one of the good surprises of this (increasingly crazy) catch up read that I decided to undertake. I really love the characters and the storylines typically feel more fresh than other x-books at the same time. I wouldn’t count this volume among my favorites of the series up to this point, but it certainly stands on its own and is absolutely worth a read along with the rest of the series. In my opinion, it is one of the more fun x-books out there and it isn’t just because I am an Age of Apocalypse Blink fanboy from way way back.
Don’t sleep on this series.
Oh yeah, and it was fun to see the “New Universe” pop up in this story as it was one of the more interesting experiments that Marvel had tried back in the day. So that was fun to revisit in a limited way.
Helllllooooo Clarice...and welcome back friends on this nightmare cruise I can't quit.
The top half of the volume was directly connected to the event "House of M", just like happening nowhere near any character directly CONNECTED to that event. Give them credit, they laid out the Exiles reasonably having to come to that earth (616) far enough in advanced that I'm sure at the time it didn't feel out of place.
That said...it left a sour taste in my mouth as part of why that world is pretty okay is that Nocturne is there somewhere, but she's actually kind of a part of the main event (her mom being Scarlet Witch) so I guess it wouldn't have made sense to have her show up here (as she wouldn't remember the Exiles and honestly they had a lot to deal with).
It ends happily for one character though!
However Calvin gets himself ONCE AGAIN made into a ticking timebomb for his friends. I swear to the stars this guy is the worst somehow, utterly and constantly. I'm with Sabertooth on that.
The second half of the volume is them dealing with the fall out of Calvin-the-Evil-Douche-Murderer.
Which then bleeds into the next volume (13) and boy do I hope this is over soon I'm tired of it.
The beginning of this volume, focused on The House Of M event is one of the best arcs of The Exiles. Having broken the formula for the Exiles int he last book, Bedard is able to give more agency to the team, making their interpersonal relationships, and their adventures much more intriguing.
He ends the House of M by giving the team a new Big Bad villain in Proteus. It's a great idea, but the longer they relied on his story, the less interesting I found it.
I highly recommend this for fans of House Of M, as it does add quite a bit to the mythos.

We also get to revisit the New Universe portion of Marvel in this volume, which I was unfamiliar with during my previous readthrough. It's far from excellent, but it's a fun little nostalgic twist, which is what's been driving this series since the beginning.
Also, the art switch up is greatly appreciated. The new style fits the new tone much better. However, I will say either the inker or colorer changed up a couple of times and it was noticeable. But, I'm not holding that against the book.
They finally copped to basically being the TV show Sliders! A Quantum Leap reference would have been nice, but I'll take Sliders.
This was one of my favorite volumes to this point. The Exiles are doing a "World Tour" where they travel to several familiar universes in pursuit of the X-Men villain Proteus. They first go to the "real" Marvel Universe during House of M, and then have to chase Proteus to the "New Universe." The chase isn't over yet as it continues into the next volume.
The Paul Pelletier art was truly exceptional here, some of the best in the series. Hopefully the next volume and the conclusion are as good as this volume.
The Exiles concept really appeals to me--some lesser used X-Men, or alternate versions of them, travel from world to world, altering events that will destroy those worlds. The team and their objectives change through the 100 issue series. After reading this collection, kind of randomly because it was to hand, I wonder if the idea is more compelling than the execution.
No one on the team is interesting or developed. I have told myself that I love Blink, and it's fun to see Sabretooth acting for a common good, but otherwise the characters aren't explored at all. Blink moans a lot about her love, Cal. I don't know what Sabretooth is doing. Heather Hudson is the team coordinator, Beak is there for awhile and Morph is comic relief. I recognize that Morph is comical, but to me he's not really funny, though his is not the nadir of Marvel humor. Then since I hate "mad killer running around killing madly" plots, this book sinks even further in my esteem.
Artist Paul Pelletier is best when drawing larger than life characters and scenarios. In this less epic type of story, everyone looks too muscly and the women are so intensely sexualized it makes me wince. You can't really look at them as sexy athletes when they stand in non-athletic poses with their clothes falling off them. Their appearance should not get in the way of the story the way it does, but since the story is kind of bare anyway I guess the characters might as well be too.
So why three stars? I am much easier pleased by graphic novels than I am with prose, although prose is much more satisfying when done well. X-Men, alternate worlds, Blink. It's simple-minded, really.
I read this as part of an overall Marvel 616 read, and in that context as part of a read-through of all House of M titles. Until I read it, I had no clue that the "Exiles" even existed. It's an interesting concept - an inter-universe team of dimension hopping do-gooders trying to 'fix' realities. I even liked some of the alternate version characters that showed up in the title - but it just isn't my cup of tea.
I guess what's wrong with this title for me is also everything that is wrong with the "multiverse" concept for me - having multiple (confusing) versions constantly overlap/ intersect, and retcons, and do-overs, and reboots, and 'deaths'. Sigh. Sometimes all I wish for is a self-contained story well-told, with a beginning, a middle and and end.
2 stars because there are some epic panels and a nice 'serial killer chase' story, but can't say I'm dying to read what happens next
Reprints Exiles #69-74. The Exiles visit the House of M and the New Universe and lose members of their team. The House of M storyline was just a crossover but the New Universe visit was interesting.
