Hard Wired

Rate this book
When an ex-Delta Forces operative dies in a car wreck in Miami, the FBI dismiss it as a tragic accident. But Jon Reznick isn’t so sure—especially when he learns that his teetotal former colleague was apparently drunk at the wheel.

Reznick’s one-man investigation quickly enters dangerous territory when it becomes clear that this was merely the first in a series of mysterious deaths. All of the victims are ex-Delta Forces, and all were involved in a top-secret Iranian hit under Reznick’s command. Retribution will not be complete until Reznick is wiped out too.

With Iran’s ruthless Quds Force hunting him down on US soil, assisted by a powerful Mexican drug cartel determined to increase its own foothold in the country, Reznick’s survival is a threat to national security. FBI Assistant Director Martha Meyerstein is not as keen as some government officials to sacrifice him as collateral damage, but the longer Reznick runs, the more audacious his enemies become. Innocent American lives are at risk, and only Reznick’s victory—or surrender—can save them.

Thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and the author for an ARC copy for this Jon Reznick number 3, the best in the series so far.

So why is the best ?

What makes a great action book?

Reznick is being chased by the Iranians, Reznick is chasing the Iranian's. So we have a fast paced action packed book with lots of twists and turns. Lots of rather nasty villains.

What also, to me, makes this book better is a larger role in this book for Martha Meyerstein, who we get to know better each book.

So if we have a book that is fast paced from the start, keeps that pace going and keeps the tension going as well as the action and also has nasty villains. Then we have a five star book.

Someone is killing Delta Force operatives that participated in an operation in Iran. Jon Reznick is on the hit list. The usual bureaucrats are keen on sacrificing Jon to the Iranian/Mexican Cartel alliance, but Reznick doesn't agree.

Fast paced and exciting novel. Not quite in the same class as, say Ben Coes or Brad Thor, but still worth seeking out.

The third in the Jon Reznick series opens with our hero at home in Maine, receiving a desperate phone call from a former Delta Force buddy “Tiny” Charles Burns (Hard Road), critically injured in a car crash in Miami, his chilling final words warning “they’re gonna kill us all…” A week later he attends the funeral in Miami, catching up with another former Delta Force member, Pete Dorfman, a divorcee living with his father in Fort Lauderdale. As he is about to board his flight home he receives a call from Dorfman, alerting him to the newspaper report on the fatal car accident, stating that Burns was intoxicated – both men knowing that “Tony” was teetotal. Reznick decides to investigate and Dorfman puts him in touch with a hacker – a former NSA operative living in a shady part of Miami.

Reznick’s “investigative” techniques draws a red flag with the FBI, and when Assistant Director Martha Meyerstein challenges him, Reznick asks her help in following up a lead to an electronics company in Arlington - just as news filters through that Dorfman was found hanged in Fort Lauderdale. This brings to light a covert operation in Iran back in July 1980, when the Delta team killed Iranian nuclear scientists: was revenge a factor here?

One by one the Delta team are eliminated, leaving only Reznick, with the assassin demanding he is turned over or American lives will be lost. Meyerstein refuses, despite pressure from her director and above to “cut Reznick loose”- and a General takes over, Reznick is abducted and held in a secure facility in the desert, ready to be used in an exchange. For the ever-resourceful Reznick, it is a race against time, escaping his captors and tracking down the assassin.

Full marks to J B Turner for producing yet another nail-biter. Reznick is both likeable and believable and the hand-to-hand combat scenes are among the best I have read. The only issue I have is that he seems to have unlimited financial resources without any obvious means of support. Perhaps I missed something in the first two books?

Verdict: More, please.

In J.B. Turner's third in the Jon Reznick series, Hard Wired (Thomas & Mercer 2016), Reznick gets a call from an old special forces buddy he hasn't talked to in a while. The man is in a car wreck dying and wants to warn Reznick that someone is after all of them.

“They’re here. And they’re going to kill us all."

Whoever "them" may be is not immediately clear to Reznick. The police call it an accident, but Reznick doesn't believe them. With another Delta friend, he soon finds what appears to be a revenge plot against a mission Reznick was part of during his Delta days. When other members of that team are also killed in what appear to be an accidents, Reznick knows he must either find out who is behind this or be the next one killed.

I like that Reznick isn't entirely likable. He's rough around the edges, abrupt, and impatient. But he's also sharp, sure of his moves, and very good at connecting the dots. I did find the logic behind the plot a bit extreme for me at times. Fiction requires that readers willingly suspend their disbelief in favor of a fun ride, and I had trouble doing that in parts. Bot the strength of the characters and the author's storytelling skills made it work.

This series is recommended for those who love extremely talented warriors who refuse to tow the line for the sake of following orders.

***

I received two of the three in the Jon Reznick series from Netgalley. Jon Reznick is a former Delta warrior, now a “ghost” employed by the American government as a legal assassin who takes his orders from shadowy handlers that rarely support him if efforts go awry. He was their plausible deniability, with no direct link to any US personnel.

"Reznick was not the judge. Nor the jury. He was the executioner."

But Reznick is not the soulless, morales-challenged killer that would fit nicely into this description. He has lines he won't cross and he has background lessons that came not from his time with the military, but influences before that:

“Highly decorated. A bit of a legend among the Delta cadre, by all accounts.”

"He thought of his father, wearing his medals at the Vietnam memorial. He thought of Lauren [his daughter] in her hospital bed. And he thought of his wife, the split second before the towers collapsed. He imagined the horror and fear that must have engulfed her as she disappeared into the dust and the concrete and twisted metal."

"He didn’t show himself to the world. That came from his father, who hadn’t been able to abide histrionics. Reznick’s father had thought a person was unhinged if they panicked about being late or forgetting items from a shopping list. No one died, so what’s the problem? His father had hated the latter part of his life, working that soul-destroying job in a fish-packing plant in Rockland. But he never bitched about it."

Life events shaped him in a way that can never be bridged by the present.

Though some sources compared Reznick to Jack Reacher, I didn't see it. Reznick is an interesting character with serious talents in his chosen assassin field, but his morals and backstory are significantly different from other fictional characters. Not better or worse. Just different.

Hard Wired was another exciting and fast-paced installment in the Jon Reznick series with an action-packed plot that never slows down.

When one of Jon Reznick's fellow former Delta Forces operatives dies in a car accident, Jon heads down to Florida to lay his friend to rest. After the man is blamed for the crash due to drunk driving, Jon knows something more is going on since the man in question didn't drink. But as Jon digs into the crash, it quickly becomes apparent something sinister is going on. An operation Jon led in Iran has come back to haunt him when it becomes clear someone is out for revenge and they won't stop until Jon and all of the men formerly in his unit are dead.

Jon is not a man who does well with taking orders and he has a hard time backing down when he's convinced he's right. Hard Wired showed that Jon is great at adapting to changing situations and that he has good instincts when it comes to not being able to trust the intelligence community. I enjoyed getting to see Jon show more of his skills in this book as he's more on his own than he was in the prior two books in the series. His ability to seamlessly blend in and his quick thinking are great for keeping him one step ahead of everyone.

I was happy to see the return of FBI Assistant Director Martha Meyerstein as she has become one of my favorite characters in this series. Martha isn't blind to the rules Jon breaks but she knows that he's incredibly useful and can do things the FBI can't. Martha is put in a position in this book where she's forced to defend Jon and I was happy to see how much she's come to value their working relationship. We're introduced to a hacker in this book that helps Jon out on a few occasions and I'm curious to see if he'll show up in future books as he's fantastic at getting the information Jon needs but he is still very much a mystery.

While this book starts with Jon investigating Tiny's car crash, it quickly turns into more after he discovers Tiny's car was tampered with. The use of the Iranian hit squad meant Jon needed to figure things out quickly as he's up against a clock. That meant this book was very fast-paced as the situations Jon found himself in changed rapidly and he had to try and stay ahead of the enemy. There were a few times that I wasn't sure how Jon would get himself out of the messes he'd found himself in, but he somehow always managed to pull it off. Overall I liked how the story wrapped up and found the ending to be pretty solid.

Hard Wired has been my favorite book in the series thus far and I'm excited to continue the series and see what Jon gets up to next. I would recommend this series for fans of other male-centric thriller series such as Jack Reacher or Mitch Rapp.

So, I think this was my favorite so far. This one showed that Jon Reznick wasn’t invincible. He did get all the bad guys but was shot in the back in the process. It was about the 6 Delta Force guys that killed a scientist 6 year before and Iran wanted revenge. Reznick was the only one of the six to survive, just barely.

As always, there was a lot of chases and killing. And again he worked with Assistant Director Martha Meyerstein. They do make a good team, even if she wants everything done by the book and Reznick threw the book away a long time ago.

There was no sex but I get the feeling there’s romantic feelings between Martha and Jon.

And the F-bomb was used 52 times.

As to the narration: Still Jeffrey Kafer does good voices for the men but the women speak kind of low. It’s okay as long as there’s no sex. Then it would sound like two men. LOL

This was very short and just a little disappointing. There was no mission per se, just a lot of running around and I have to say that Meyerstein's (FBI) loyalty to Reznick, while admirable, surely could not have survived in the real world.

Reznick took a call from one of his Delta buddies saying 'they' were coming to kill them all. It seems one of the missions where a six man team was sent to assassinate a foreign scientist was coming back to haunt them. The man's brother was out for revenge. And that, folks, was it in a nutshell. The rest of the book was about Reznick trying to warn the others and staying alive himself. Good action but a bit light on actual story. I'm sure the next one will be heaps better.

I liked this book more than the previous two. Reznick is on a hit list and all he wants is to punish those who want to kill him.

One thing I find interesting throughout these books is how the government is so against Reznick, and has been from the start. In this book they even want to sacrifice him to keep relations with a particular country above water. I don't think I've seen this facet of the government in other same genre books.

Another thriller with Jon Reznick, our ex-Delta force hero. He is much more of one-man operation in this one, involving Iranian terrorists. Fast pace, very violent and a real page-turner. On the next one soon.

I've read the first two in the Reznick series and have thoroughly enjoyed them. Knowing the 4th book has recently been released I figured it was high time to catch up so started on this the third book in the series. Jon Reznick is ex-delta and has a myriad of skills which sets him apart. He has previously helped the FBI but there is certainly no love lost between them and Jon. As a character I like him, a LOT! As a character he is a typical lead hero with the skill set to match, although he also seemingly lives off adrenaline and illicit drugs, still...what's not to love! When he hears his ex-Delta Forces buddy Tiny has been killed in a car accident because he was drunk, Jon isn't buying it. The story is then set as Jon tries to prove Tiny's innocence and in doing so uncovers a terrorist cell.

Martha Meyerstein who is with the FBI also makes a comeback as part of her task is to get Reznick off the grid and out of the FBI's way while they hunt the cell. Of course nothing is quite that straightforward and as always Jon doesn't make anybody's life easy. The plot contains plenty of thrills and spills and the action is packed in. Turner certainly knows how to create a fast paced and action packed book and this one certasinly had me turning the pages.

The only thing I noticed is that this book seemed short (although packed to the gills) and when I checked it was just shy of 270 pages. I confess I would have liked it to be a longer story as I felt like it could have been a lot more than it was (if that makes sense). Having said that, Turner is becoming another Simon Kernick for me. A book where there isn't necessarily the most original plots, but one that captures your attention. He is a great storyteller and has created a series that is easy to get hooked on. For me, I'll be moving on to the next book in the series 'Hard Way' as soon as possible! Also, one of the best things is that the first three books in the series are less than a pound on Kindle! BARGAIN!!!

In this book, former Delta Force member Jon Reznick gets a call from a former Delta Force colleague Tiny. Jon and Tiny had gone to Iran to kill some Iranian scientists and now Tiny has been in an accident that killed his wife and child but before he dies he manages to tell Jon that they've killed him and are coming for them all. When Jon sees in the paper that they said Tiny was very drunk and that it caused the wreck, Jon is irate. Tiny hated alcohol and was a teetotaler. He was also not drunk at the scene of the accident. Jon gets together with another former Delta Force member who was in on the killing of the Iranian scientists at Tiny's funeral and a short time later that guy is killed in an explosion.

It's then up to Jon to try to figure out who is behind this and it becomes clear someone in the government is involved. FBI Assistant Director Martha tries to help but things spiral out of control and soon Jon is on the run from all the bad guys as more are killed.

Love Jon Reznick books! Great narration by Jeffrey Kafer (audible review)

Another good Jon Reznick story. Full of action, terrorists, espionage, FBI and Jon.

This book is about a terrorist cell out for revenge on Jon's Delta group from an incident in Tehran.
The story line and plot was good. Fast paced, easy to follow and it all flowed very well.

As for the narration, it was very good. Jeffrey Kafer does a great narration. The women sound like women and he has a very nice reading voice.

Hard Wired is like…..a lazy try. Yah, it is still fast pace and action packed as I like but the plot is nothing but Reznick and the FBI running around and frankly that’s quite lame. Don’t get me wrong, it is still an ok read just that as a Reznick fan I am a little disappointed. Well, I hope the next book will be better.

Hard Kill
Hard Wired
Trilogy by J.B. Turner

This engaging series featuring Jon Reznick, a black-ops specialist who takes his orders from shadowy handlers, within the US government. He is a hired killer, who uncovers a plot to de-stabilise the US government.

After running from the FBI, he links with FBI Assistant Director Martha Meyerstein, to prevent certain mayhem within the Washington and New York. He remains the only person who knows the true extent of the threat to national security—and has the stealth and determination to stop it.

Throughout the three books, the plot is fast paced, with plenty of action. The characters are well developed, as well as being believable.

This is an excellent series, which I read in two days. Extremely hard to put down.

Not as good as it could be

This is my first read by this author. It read like a Tom Clancy want a be. The plot was thin, and if you blackened all the bad language the dialogue was non existent. I have always felt a good writer can hold the reader's attention with three things:
1. A good interesting plot that is NOT solved by the reader in the first three chapters.
2. An interesting dialogue. No need for filth to get the point across.
3. Interesting characters that become more interesting as the story unfolds.

Ex special ops group is being hunted down by Iranian terrorist group as revenge for a black ops they carried out in Iran. The group leader is the prime target and while he had worked with the FBI in the past he has become the target of FBI and the CIA because of is unorthodox methods and his knowledge of past black operations. A decent read with one glaring error, where a terrorist goes to house of one of the group (Dorfman) as a UPS driver and shoots him several times. And then "Dorfman took out his iPhone and took six shots of the corpse. Then sent the photos to his handler thousands of miles away" . Where was the proof reader on this? Fortunately the rest of the books was ok and a decent read.

God I love this guy. Is there going to be another book? While the story is seriously out there...who thinks up this stuff?! It was heart stopping. I couldn't stop reading long enough to go put it down till morning. Assistant Director Martha needs to hang up her day job and move her kids to Rockport, Maine and smell the Atlantic.

I enjoy J B Turner's efforts but would not note the following:
The constant and repetitive expression from many of his characters - "Gimme a break" I find extremely irritating and annoying and like from Martha - "How could this happen" and finally from the underlings - "I'm on it"

I find the dialogue of the characters on the inevitable video conference calls to be so repetitive and quite frankly childish and not befitting their so called seniority and rank .

A question - does the main character John R consume other than burgers, pancakes, fries ,coffee and coke not to mention the constant popping of the tablets to keep him high wired ??

When following the baddies in cars that are hot wired ,do they always travel on roads with potholes which necessitate special mention or a sentence or two in seemingly every one of his novels ??

Final two observations , one has to say ,that given the regularity and frequency with which John R 'pops' people ,is it credible that he should continue to be "employed" by the FBI and walk away scot-free ??
Why is the CIA always the baddie contrasted against the ever clean FBI and surely on some occasion there has to be some level of accountability for their so so many nefarious actions ??

All in all , I find Turner's novels to be light-hearted and quite entertaining reads but I am constantly struck by the foregoing and their regularity in all his efforts which dilutes such enjoyment and results in irritation and annoyance .

4 1/2 stars!

Another fantastic story in the Jon Reznick series! This time things are getting personal for Jon when his ex-delta brothers are being hunted down and killed, making it look like either they were at fault, or by suicide. When one of them call Jon, using his last breath, to tell him that they're going to kill them all, Jon knows that he has to do something.

He's consulted with the FBI on a couple of cases, helped the Assistant Director Martha Meyerstein and her team prevent terrorist attacks on US soil. When he calls Martha asking for her help to locate his former teammates, and hopefully prevent any more deaths, she refuses. When the FBI finds out that he's not only continuing the investigation, but breaking the law to do so, the Director orders Martha to find and contain Reznick. They figure out that what he said was true, when another teammate is found dead by apparent suicide, and finally give him the help he needs, but at what cost?

Will they be able to save his ex-delta brothers? Or is there more going on than any of them know about? Will they be able to capture the killers before it's too late? You're going to have to read this to find out! You won't be disappointed.

I strongly recommend this book, series, and great author!

If you are of the snowflake variety believing absolutely in the the all powerful, evil CIA, morally corrupt US government, then you will love this author.

If you like a little more realism, you may enjoy the light read for what it is and try to ignore the liberal/European anti US propaganda.

Did you realize that by reading this review some shadowy agency of the US government is watching you through the computer or cell phone you are using and if you don’t immediately write a condemning response you will be added to a list to be spied upon? They will activate every electronic device around you to monitor you. And most likely they will send a hit squad after you.

Like most authors of this genre, he did his research about firearms by going to Gun control sites and swallowing hook, line and sinker. Totally looses all credibility about having inside knowledge about what the evil CIA does when you don’t know squat about something as straight forward as firearms.

Some literary license is acceptable but this is a little too much. I only completed reading three of his books because I purchased three on Kindle at a cheap price and hadn’t found anything else to read. I will pass on him in the future.

I posted a review earlier, but have not seen it published. My opinion hasn't changed, but I may not be able to remember everything I said in my first review of Jon Reznick, #3. Unfortunately, from my perspective, the book plunged deeper into a downward spiral that began in the second Reznick story. I was intrigued with the character and mostly enjoyed the first book. Bought and read the second book based on my enjoyment of the first book. Quite disappointed in the second book as dialog and plot deteriorated sharply. The third book, Hard Wired, was a complete flop for me. Characters (I don't remember their names now) who should have some strong characteristics appear to be fools. Reznick, as usual, wants to go against the grain and mostly makes a mess without accomplishing much. When he needs to have his wits most about him he pops a couple of Dexadrine, "gulps" hot coffee, gets totally wired and says, "fuck" a lot. The villains are cartoonish and the three bad guys he has faced so far have largely gotten away Scot free and are likely contributing to mayhem somewhere else. Will they return? I don't know and at this point I really don't care. I've had as much of Reznick and his hyped-up flopping around as I can stand.

"Hard Wired" by J.B. Turner starts with protagonist black ops specialist Jon Reznick getting a deathbed call from one of his Delta team members. Only his buddy isn't in a bed or even lying down. He's been in a car accident, and his wife and daughter are dead next to him. He tells Reznick that somebody is targeting all of them. Reznick enlists the aid of FBI assistant director Martha Meyerstein but he's soon at odds with the FBI and out on his own, tracking down the killers. But to everybody else, the death of the Delta vet is just another accident. But they play by the rules. Reznick doesn't. This is the most action driven of the series so far with Resnick just one step behind the killers at every turn. However, the FBI is also after him as he tries to stop a couple of brothers from exacting revenge. Turner shows his chops and imagination. Again, I plowed through this book. I got frustrated by the bad guys because they're smart. Maybe smarter than Resnick. But our hero is one determined, dogged investigator who stops at nothing to eliminate the threat.
