The end doesn’t come till you draw your last breath…

After enduring the holocaust that destroyed Fairbanks, Chuck and his family did more than simply endure. They thrived. Together with other survivors, the Nagy’s are rebuilding their lives in the Alaskan wilderness, creating a better society. But the Russian military is closing in like a pack of wolves, and suddenly, in spite of all their progress, Chuck must make one of the hardest decisions of his life.

Ultimately, Chuck leads the survivors through three hundred miles of Alaskan wilderness in a fight for freedom. The odds are stacked against them. Food is scarce and the weather is brutal, but Chuck unites the remaining survivors before they all – even his own children – are forced to pay the ultimate price.

Fans of military fiction will love the power, suspense, and deep family commitment of the End Times: Alaska series.

Experience what the future may hold for us all, and how the community they were rebuilding endures hardship and suffering as they run to survive!

I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.

I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.

No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.

We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.

Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.

It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.

Running

This KU library selection is the continuation of the overarching storyline of the End Times Alaska series, set near Fairbanks, which has been leveled by a nuclear bomb. Chuck Nagy and his family have befriended a young group of employees at a hot springs resort and they bring structure to the tiny community. They discover another town has also been nuked and that there are hostile forces on the ground and in the air. All too soon their sanctuary is no longer safe and they are running for their lives. It's about three hundred miles of wilderness to get to Canada, but is it safe there, or will they be greeted by enemy forces?

What is most important

This book has a strong family, and grows stronger as they add to it. Making the best possible life in one of the harshest wildernesses, you tough the heart and spirit of these people. These are the kind of people who inspire. The adventure of life creates a wonderful story.
The second in the series, and this series is a must for anyone who understands the important facets of life. It is the people in your life who matter most.

Good Read of Apocalypse in Alaska

This is a really good book that keeps you entertained from end to end. I didn't rank Book 1, but I would give it the same ranking as Book 2. I'm not sure when they were written, but apparently from the comments, our worthless last Pres. was still in office.

When the seemingly vanished outside world returns with a vengence, average people rise to incredible efforts to maintain their very sanity and the lives of those around them. When pushed to the limit and survival teeters on the brink, victory belongs to those willing to take one more step and then another and another. Worth the time to read.

Cold, hard reality

Craig has the ability to pull you into his story. The reality is stark and compelling and never out of the realm of possibility. It's written in first person, so reads like it was taken from part of his own life. I can't wait for the next episode!

The story continues with the extended family trying to eke out a living in Alaska not knowing what is happening not just in Alaska but everywhere. Finally we get some background as to what did occur and the reasons for running. Now for book three in the series.

Chuck continues to search for survivors and additional supplies that they may use. He discovers that most everyone is gone; the questions of why and where they went go unanswered. Only a couple willing to shoot at Chuck are encountered and Chuck had to deal with them decisively. The lodge and its group of survivors continued to be a weekly visit for the distraction and the companionship. With a larger generator, a supply of gas, fuel oil, and split wood Chuck’s family lived almost as they had before the explosion. Eventually a couple encounters with soldiers and the descriptions of vehicles got Chuck believing that Russian troops were here in Alaska. Chuck’s initial outlook had been, “Our new world was so much smaller, yet more fulfilling.” This outlook would change abruptly. It was time to leave the lodge; the situation in the area was heating up. Chuck’s fear of Russian troops was coming true. A very good story and a wonderful narrator.

Run: End Times Alaska, adds much depth and a measured pace to the series.

Where I found Book 1 a bit below the standard of dystopian genre, Run is a compelling narrative. It pulls together the Community purpose and dedication, and adds more members as well.

Though ultimately forced out of their protective enclave, the Community pulls together to persevere.

The whole gang is back and Russians are closing in, it is time to make the hard decisions, so what are the answers? Another grab you and not let you go book by author Craig Martelle. He brings Alaska and the story alive for the reader and it feels like you must make this decision as well. Chuck and his young family plus all of of the people at the resort must decide if they want to make the 300 mile trip to Canada or stay where they are and take their chances against the Russians, what will they do? If you like audios this series narrated by Chris Abernathy is a great one when you finish one you will want the next one right away so make sure you have the credits or the budget.

Good to the last word

I really enjoyed this book and book 1. There adventures and sorrows keep me glued to each page. I felt the cold of the weather and the warmth of their hearts.

I love this series. It's so easy to full in love with the characters and to immerse yourself in their world. I sat reading this book and cried, laughed and hoped along with them. I am so excited to start book three but sad that not all the characters will be making it there with me. Craig Martelle is a brilliant writer and well worth a read. I definitely want to read more of his books once I've completed this series. As this series is so beautifully constructed. With a clever story, that keeps you guessing all the way through. Just brilliant!
