Loren Mackenzie is at the top of her game, leading her team of pro cyclists in the Women’s World Tour in Europe. For her, cycling is also a way to escape, using the burn of her muscles to cleanse her mind.
After a change in the management of her team, Loren is brought back together with a man she once loved. His amorous attention resurrects the feelings she once had for him, but also his attempts to manipulate her.
When mishap puts her in the sights of an A-list actor, the chemical attraction quickly develops into something more for Loren. The relationship attracts the eye of the tabloid media, dredging up the past she wanted to keep buried. Emotions run high with each exciting race in the Women's World Tour, pitting teammate against teammate, adding kindling to a rivalry that puts Loren's chances to win the World Championship in jeopardy.
When Love and Obsession collide in the first book of the Wheeler series, can Loren withstand the storm, or will she lose everything she has fought so hard to achieve?
Sara has never lacked for imagination, but it wasn’t until the Fates decided to give the string of her life a tug, bringing her romantic leanings together with her passion for the sport of cycling and Poof! A story was written down and completed, much to her surprise and chagrin.
She is a (self)published author of women's fiction/sports romance novels, Wheeler and Wheeler: In Darkness, There is Still Light. A third novel to complete the series is in development.
The author resides in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA, with her husband and their son. Sara is a paralegal for a law firm in Chester County, Pa, an avid road cyclist, and indoor cycling instructor at a national chain.
Wheeler is an intense story about a strong female protagonist, Loren Mackenzie, who has mastered the art of professional cycling and who finds herself caught up in the orbit of a famous and quite charming actor. But Loren's world isn't altogether a bed of roses. Her life is hectic and full of threats and dangers, not only with her past but her future as well.
Wheeler definitely spans genres: romance, thriller, suspense. You name it! While I'm not a cyclist by any stretch of the imagination, Wheeler put me firmly into that world and took me on one wild ride. I had no idea Women's Cycling could be so exhilarating!
The pacing and characterization in Wheeler are right on target, taking hold of the reader from the very first page. Loren is flawed yet strong; overwhelmed yet determined. All of the characters are well developed, and the overall story is unique and completely engaging.
The Shakespearean quotes are a plus, in my opinion, and I thoroughly recommend this intriguing and faced-paced story that will leave you completely breathless, as if you were the one doing all that cycling and romancing and everything else in between. Don't miss out!
Wheeler By Sara Butler Zalesky Thank you to @silverdaggertours for a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Wheeler is the story of a professional female cyclist and her life both on and off the bike. Don't be deterred by the cycling aspect because it's actually informative. Lauren is a long time professional cyclist. She is with her team in Europe. During a training ride, she has a flat tire. This good looking guy stops to help her out, and Lauren realizes he is a famous actor, Graham Atherton. Their interaction leads to a romantic relationship, but this is not wholly a romance novel. It's just a part of the bigger picture. Because he's famous, Lauren is thrust into the spotlight as well. Ugly things and terrible things about her past are revealed. Graham is by her side. Can their relationship survive the scrutiny? On another front, we learn about the cycling world and Lauren's place in it. Through an earlier mishap, she is now the team captain. Cycling is very complicated, but it's explained in an informative and understandable way. The worst part, though, is that Lauren must work with an ex, Felix, who has been hired as director. He's a bad guy who is a part of her ugly past. As the story unfolds, we see how horrible Felix is in his mistreatment of Lauren. She is the type who will push through anyway and persevere at all costs. Unfortunately, she is sidelined by accident and injuries. Sometimes it's all just too much, and Lauren struggles to remain strong and recover as the demons from her past come back to torment her. Will Lauren overcome the obstacles that have been thrown in her path? She's strong and intelligent, but is that enough? Graham hangs around, thank goodness, but he has a past of his own and some issues to contend with. I must say, his random Shakespeare quotes are so perfect to lighten the story a bit. Graham is a kind, smart and talented guy. He's the type you don't often find anymore. Can Lauren and Graham weather all of these storms? Read and find out! This one is definitely thrilling and suspenseful at times. It's a sharp engrossing story that I promise will capture and keep you for a while.
Loren Mackenzie lives her life to be able to compete as a cyclist. She has spent her whole life working to overcoming her own physical challenges. She also have to have control of her mind to keep focus on cycling and nothing. She has to have her emotions in check to use just enough emotion to become one the elite cyclists in the world. When someone has an accident at the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic; this give Loren's the opportunity to lead her team another challenge for Loren.
Loren biggest challenge seems to be when she meets and falls hard for a famous actor and when their thought to be perfect relationship isn't so perfect. Loren starts to fall apart, which can have a major affect on cycling, But when the media starts to dig into Loren past what will they find out? Loren has a lot of fear over them discovering a hidden secret. With Loren emotions out of control this puts her chances at the World Championship in jeopardy. What happens when Loren has to face the past ? Can she move past it or will it defeat her?
This was a different story and I enjoyed reading it. It had twists and turns that I didn't realize, that changed the direction of the story. But it was good just unexpected. Loren is such an amazingly strong character. I love her. She was the main character and I loved her strength. It was a good book I'd recommend to anyone. One click this one!
I received a copy of the book "Wheeler" in return for an honest review. When I read the description about the book I will admit I was a bit hesitant to read it as I am not the most sports minded person and know next to nothing about women's cycling but I was intrigued by the synopsis and decided to give it a go. Wow! I was not disappointed. This well written debut novel has a little of everything...sports, romance, personal tragedy... and it was a real page turner! When you are introduced to the protagonist, professional cyclist Loren Mackenzie, it is the middle of the racing season. During a training run she has a flat tire. Graham Atherton, the famous good looking and sexy actor, comes to her rescue and a romantic relationship ensues. As Atherton woos her with quotes from Shakespeare, Loren travels across Europe with her team and demonstrates the limits to which she pushes her body to win. Loren struggles physically to hang on and is forced to confront the horrors of her past. Sara Zalesky demonstrates the depth of her of cycling knowledge and does a great job of balancing that detail with romance and suspense. The added bits of Shakespeare and French are fun and give an authentic feel to the European locations. I look forward to reading a second "Wheeler" book.
Wheeler, just like its unique title and cover, was a breath of fresh air in the world of sports romance.
Never had I felt so invested in learning the technicalities of a sport or feel so intrigued by the game, it amazes me how much of the author's passion and knowledge of cycling was translated into this book. Most of the sports romance I binge on have a common theme to it, we are often sidetracked by the romance that it the sport aspect was not given much weight, but somehow this book has a perfect balance and it was such a page-turner!
Loren, the female, was such a strong and independent female character that you learned to respect and love throughout the book. I could list all the things that I loved about her, but that would be a whole story of its own, haha! Her persona is infectious and I found myself drawn to her inexplicably, just like how Graham gravitated towards her since their first meeting..or "accident", it's no wonder that he desperately tried to hunt her down!
If you are looking for sports romance with the great characters, plot, romance and a whole lot of sports, you found a hidden gem!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Xpresso Book Tours and the author. Thank you so much for the reviewing opportunity!
When reading a novel which is set against a sports/athletic background, it is a fine line that the author walks between giving enough of an explantion for the sport to make sense, and becoming more like a quasi-documentary.
Here, it felt like there was an awful lot of details about professional cycling, but on the whole, I think that the author stayed on the right side of the informational content for it not to detract from the overall enjoyment of the story.
The pacing was decent, and the characters were three dimensional with natural interactions. I didn't entirely get the depth of the connection between Loren and Graham, and after a while, I found the constant Shakespeare quotes to be a little irritating. However, the drama and ultimate climax to the threat was, I though, dealt with in a mature and even manner.
In summary, a reasonable romantic suspense story set against the backdrop of the women's tour.
I voluntarily reviewed a reviewer copy of this book.
I love sports and especially women accelerating in sports… so this was an easy one for me. Sara clearly demonstrates her strong passion for cycling in this romantic account of one woman’s life journey. Meanwhile, highlighting her struggles, determination and perseverance...and throwing a celebrity babe into the mix, makes it that much more exciting.
The characters are very well developed, complex and are a great reflection of reality. It was definitely my favorite part of the novel. I felt I could highly relate to Loren’s journey and THIS is what makes life worth living for! Ride baby ride, and it doesn't have to be all the time with spirit, talent, and grace!
In this book Loren is a professional woman's cyclist in Europe. She is known as the Ice Queen due to her lack of emotions during the heart of competitions. She has had a very dark past and has suffered most horrific things. She uses this pain from the suffering to push herself to the max during competitions. One of these things comes in the form of Felix, her sporting director.
After an accident and a mishap, Loren is left stranded on the side of the road. When a handsome stranger stops to help her, she is very cautious and refuses help. The knight in shining armor just happens to be a famous actor Graham Atherton. Surprised she lets him help her.
Graham beats himself up for not getting the beautiful woman's phone number. But he remembers her logo on her bike jersey and has his agent track her down. And so begins the romance. As the romance blossoms it stirs up jealousy in the form of Felix.
Loren is in a horrible bike accident and has to be rushed to the hospital. This is where everything start to go wrong. As Loren pushes herself to continue the competition, her headaches come on stronger and then Felix starts cornering her. What is she going to do? Loren is determined to do this on her own. She is scared to ask for help. As her past comes back to haunt her and she gets hurt yet again, she starts to feel as if she is falling apart. With Worlds coming up she is worried that she will lose herself before it is all over.
The characters in this book were amazing. Loren is a role model for those who have had tragedy in their lives. She is strong, courageous and plain out wonderful. She has endured so much personal tragedy in her life. I am amazed by her character in this story and her rise from the ashes of her past. Graham is so sweet, caring, strong, honest and kind. He is the kind of man that will melt your heart. He is not one without tragedy in his past as well. The love story between these two is heart warming. It has pain, strength and everlasting. Reading their story is like watching two broken souls piece together as one stronger than before. Better together than alone.
Even though the main characters of this book shine so bright, so do other characters. There are so many beautiful people in this book. I enjoyed getting to know them. Like CeCe for instance. She is Loren's best friend, sister and confidant. They even bonded on a blood pack. She is so full of life and an all around fun person. She really brings out the best in Loren when she needs it most. Anthony is another one. He is Loren's sort of adopted brother. He is loyal to Loren and would do anything to protect her. He has endured a huge amount of pain and loss and has come out stronger because of Loren. These are just a few of my favorites. There are so many more. I could go on for days.
This book was an intense roller coaster ride. I was sucked into this read from the very beginning. There were moments I was balling up my fist and biting my nails. And then there were times I was ugly crying. This book is not a romance novel. It does have a romantic story in it but that is not the center piece. I believe the book is centered around Loren and her personal journey that brings her to the place in her life where she can really let go and be free.
I really enjoyed the way the author built up the story slowly, with it getting more and more intense with each page. She draws her audience into the story effortlessly. I was very impressed with her writing. I have to warn you that this book did have a cliff hanger and I was like NOOOOOOO!!!!! But no worries, I hear she is planning to release a followup novel. Which in my opinion she can not write it fast enough. wink wink
So if you like books with thrills, chills and romance, then this book is perfect for you. I highly suggest this book! I could go on for days talking about this book, but I don't like spoilers and I won't do that to you. I do have to warn you that there are some French lines in it. I was very thankful for Google to help translate. You will learn a lot about the cycling world. It is very exciting. So go out and pick up your copy or download one now. You will not regret it.

This was one of the best books, that wasn't YA, that I've read in months. It's so rich in details that I felt like I was actually there!
There's some French in it (there is a glossary at the back) and lots of cycling terms but I was able to figure out the cycling terms after a little bit. I was reading on a nook so I had to use trusty Google to look up the French but that's ok. Then there's also a TON of Shakespeare. All of those added together make it like no book I've ever read. And it was awesome!!
We travel all over Europe and to the States while Loren goes to different races. These were really cool views into what a cyclist sees and feels while out there racing. There's also some commentary during a few of the races that helped me to understand some of the things that were happening and it was also an outsiders point of view which helped as well. We also spend time at Loren's home and places around it. This is very important because it gives you a break between races and Loren's story unfolds a lot during these times.
Loren is a professional women's cyclist. The only way I can really describe her is that she was like an onion. There were so many layers to her and I loved it. She's witty, strong, vulnerable, caring, and passionate.
Witty: She has a wicked sense of humor! Some of her comebacks are real zingers that had me laughing out loud a lot!
Strong and vulnerable: She's had some trauma in her life that has started to surface and haunt her. However her friends, aunt and especially Graham (I'll get to him in a moment) were able to slowly peal back the layers and so that we saw more of her character and learned more about her past. The pacing of revealing her past was perfect. You could really focus on each part instead of being bombarded with a bunch of information at one time.
Caring: She truly cares for her teammates and friends. She's never really too selfish, she wants success for everyone on her team. She also has friends that aren't her teammates that she really cares about.
Passionate: First she's very passionate about her sport. While she cares for her teammates she also takes her sport and health seriously. Second she meets Graham and he quickly becomes one of the most important things in her life.
Graham is a pretty successful actor. He was her, at first, not very wanted knight in shining armor that stopped to help her with a tire when it blew out during a training ride. The attraction was instant and it just built from there. He's also very caring, not at all self-centered, and strong. I'm not going to break down those descriptions too much. He has a family that's a little dysfunctional, he's very grounded even though he's famous and he's strong when Loren is close to her breaking point. He's pretty much perfect.
Together they make a couple that the media is dying to know and dig up dirt on.
Her teammates and friends outside of cycling and even her opponents make the book complete. I don't like tomatoes but they are the avocado that makes the bacon (Loran and Graham) and lettuce (plot line) complete to make an amazing BL, no T, A (the novel). :)
Sara is amazing with the way that she has written and builds this novel. Like I said before it's like I was actually there with Loran throughout this journey. First while this is told from Loran's POV every now and then Sara adds in the thoughts of another character so you know what they're thinking and feeling at that moment as well without flipping back and forth too much between people. Loved that! It starts out with that fateful meeting on the side of the road and just keeps building more and more and getting better the further you read until you get to the end with the craziest cliff hanger that made me yell out what? no I need more! at 11:45 at night.
Read this book! Especially if you're into cycling or sports with some romance thrown into the mix!
A different story line where the female lead is the athlete, Loren is a very strong focused female character which I liked very much. She is determined to become the very best, as a competition cyclist. Until she meets and falls for Graham Atherton, a famous good looking, actor but as they begin a relationship the media digs into Loren's personal life and cause her revisit her long buried past. This book is filled with suspense, humor and will completely surprise you. Not at all what I was expecting from the original blurb but in a very good way.
As a female athlete [runner!] there are aspects of this novel that I can truly relate to. Overcoming your inner demons, silencing or ignoring that voice that tells you to stop and you simply push through to prove to yourself you CAN. I totally get that.
Loren Mackenzie presents herself as a strong female who has been appointed the position as team captain amidst a very important season, the Aviva Women’s Tour in England. She aims to bring her team together after a disappointing Classic in the states. While on a training ride she ends up with a flat and that is where she meets Graham Atherton, a well-known actor, when he decides to stop and help her.
We are thrust into the world of Women’s Cycling, for those who think they’ll be lost it is explained well throughout the book how the time trials are, where and what comes next and the importance of each event.
At times I found the way the cycling events were thrown into the scenes were a little distracting and prohibited me from connecting to the characters and only later on when Loren is forced to take time off did I find myself truly invested in her character’s story. Why might you ask? The racing is fun, makes you feel as though you were at home or on the sidelines watching and listening to the commentators, but as stated previously it served to pull away from Loren in spite of being about her.
Once a tragedy occurs, Loren seems to break down considerably. Physically, emotionally and mentally. It takes its toll on her, those around her and even Graham. Graham is dealing with his own issues and has to put them aside because he wants to be there for Loren.
Their relationship becomes something of a whirlwind and rather instantaneous in the beginning. I found myself looking at the beginning of each chapter [which is actually dates. E.g. 11 June, 12 July] and it was at times difficult to believe things had become that deep/heavy that fast, but who am I to judge? I knew I was going to marry my husband within a month of meeting him.
I really really enjoyed the last 200ish pages of the book, because I found that it balanced the cycling, relationships, and the romance better than the first half. That was when I couldn’t put it down.
All in all, a great debut novel, not to mention insight into women’s cycling.
I loved this book. I have never read a book about a female cyclist and what it takes to be one. Loren and Graham are an amazing couple and I have loved following their journey in these books. I can't wait for third book to come out.
I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read a book about a cyclist before. I loved how the athlete was a strong female and the guy is the one chasing her. Well written. I liked all the twist and turns.
I didn't previously think that I would enjoy a book about road cycling so much, but Wheeler is a great read. It combines a growing romance with road cycle tours. But it's also much more than this.
In many ways I wouldn't classify Wheeler as a romance novel. There is romance and plenty of it, between cyclist Loren and actor Graham. But there is also tension and a thriller element to the novel. While Loren pushes herself to her limit physically on her bike, she also has the emotional fall out from a previous relationship to deal with, along side the development of her new one.
I couldn't put this book down. It dragged me along quickly, making me want to know what would happen next and where it was likely to go. A lot of the road cycling strategy was covered and this could have got a little tedious, but the way that it was mixed with the story itself, meant that it really didn't. I was drawn into that side of things, even feeling for a little while that I'd like to take up cycling myself. (Never fear, it soon passed.)
The only down side to this story, was that it didn't really finish. Or rather, it finished on a happy for now, with more clearly to come. I can't wait to read what's next for Loren and Graham.
This book was a big surprise when I read the blur I was expecting something entirely different. I knew I was going to read about a strong female practicing a not-so-common sport for women. I also found that Loren is more than what she lets people see, and that's what's made this book special to me. I saw some resemblance with my own persona. Then we have Graham, sweet and sexy. The connection between them it's really powerful from the beginning and we can see how both their characters develop, as a couple but also as individuals. Best part, this is just the first chapter of the serie. The story just began.
The term 'wheeler' ('Rouleur' in French) describes a type of cyclist who is good at many aspects of the sport. A majority of the women pros are Rouleurs, meaning they're good at climbing, can sprint to the finish line and have the ability to endure many fast miles in the saddle in support of their teams. In contrast, in the men's peloton, riders are often specialists: climbers, sprinters, and time trialists.
Who knew a book on racing, would keep me up all night reading? Well written developed characters that have real personalities. Loren and Graham are lovely, flawed at times, engaging, relatable. Secondary characters, villians, suspense, angst. I loved this debut Novel, can't wait to read more. Back characters need voices, books to explore. Sweet heat of romance. and did I mention Shakespeare? Lovely addition. Recommended
Loren Mackenzie is a professional cyclist in Europe and known as the "Ice Queen". When her ex, Feliz Lalonde is hired as the new Directeur Sportif for the team she knows she has to keep going in spite of being worried about what Felix will try and do.
When Graham Atherton stops on the side of the road to help a cyclist with her tire he is immediately attracted to her and knows he must track her down as he can not get her out of his head. The only problem for Loren is that Graham is an actor and soon she finds herself in the press more than what she is comfortable with.
Loren has a past that she is hiding behind her "Ice Queen" reputation and when some of it begins to get out will she be able to face it? When Felix makes it clear that he still wants Loren will she be able to turn him down?
Can Loren deal with everything that she is faced with and will Graham be there for her?
This was a good book but at times I found it too long.
I really liked Loren and my heart broke with how she grew up and what she was faced with. I was definitely concerned about her nightmares and why this wasn't dealt with previously. It's no wonder she felt like everyone had abandoned her. Loren worked hard to get to the top of her game and I was mad that she didn't voice how she felt about her company hiring Felix.
I liked Graham and I really was happy with how much he was there for Loren. He was there for her with every injury that she went through and helped her with her nightmares. Then everything changed when he went to the movie set and I was so mad at him then for how he treated Loren. I was so frustrated with him!
I was shocked at the past between Loren and Felix and that she didn't tell anyone what happened. She kept her "friends" at a distance and it broke my heart that she had such a hard time trusting people. I was so upset at what Felix was able to do to Loren and I was proud of her for getting the courage to get back on her bike after everything.
The book is very good though at making you understand the racing aspect of the sport and you could understand why teams had certain strategies the way that they did and how they utilized all of the members of the team.
The end left me pretty confused as it just seemed to end and there are things not resolved at all. Hopefully the author continues Loren's story as there needs to be some loose ends tied up.
This was a decent enough book. The story line was good and the blurb promised a great read.
Details and descriptions, in my opinion, were lacking at times. At other times, they were perfect. It seemed to be hit or miss throughout the story. It made fully understand what was going on difficult while reading the story.
The characters were interesting. There was some, what I feel, was insta-love, Or if not install-love than some really cheesy interactions between the two main characters. At first, I thought their exchanges were kind of cute but then it continued and it god old, pretty fast.
So overall, it was a decent story. The author wrote a good story line but with the missing details and descriptions at times and the characters interactions not jiving with me, it isn’t my favorite story. It may be the type of story that you, future reader, likes so please take my review with a grain of salt, as this simply could just be personal opinion.

*A Copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book and my comments here are my honest opinion.
This is not typically my kind of book The blurb was interesting so I gave it a shot. I found it long and wordy. I found myself skipping parts, as it seemed to set a drawn out pace. I picked up and put it down numerous times in order to get through it. The story was interesting. The characters were good. I would have enjoyed it more if it weren’t so long. I was not fond of the ending. After reading such a long drawn out book. I feel it left off with me not wanting to continue the next in the series. Loren’s character was strong yet at times her issues really steered me from going further in the book. She is a professional cyclist competing with her team for many different races. I particularly loved her teammates and some of her race crew. Theo, a reporter, was one of my favourite characters. 2.5/5 I won’t be reading the second book.
For someone who is has no real knowledge of competitive cycling, I loved this book. The cycling is at the forefront of the novel, but it's also entwined with romance and family and friends, and a secret but tragic past of Loren's. She is a complicated woman, but so strong and determined.
This book takes you through all the emotions - frustration, happiness, sadness, anger - and leaves you wanting more! I can't wait to read book two (I am so happy there is one!)
New author to and this is book 1 ... this book kept me on my toes. Loren is a protagonist who is an amazing cyclist whose at the top of her game. Loren falls for a famous actor and he flips her perfect world upside down. There relationship isnt so perfect and it cause a big decline in her cycling. Her fast paced life almost cost her more and she almost let the past defeat her. This book felt a little drawn out in places. This is definitely a new type of writing style for me
I loved this book about Loren and how she is cycling with her team. With one friend hurt turns her life around little and she ends up meeting sexy Graham Atherton who helps her out and ends up being on here mind a lot. As the story outflows around you, you just can't help but smile and keep reading as the story keeps getting good.
What a good read! Not knowing anything about cycling - I was amazed how drawn into this book I became. The storyline had it all - romance, jealousy, teamwork, rivalry, strength, weakness and tragedy. With a little bit of Shakepeare thrown in as well! Not normally my type of genre - but would totally recommend. Can't wait to read the second book - In Darkness, There Is Still Light.
This book is definitely something different for me but one that I thoroughly enjoyed! I loved Graham’s charm and all his amazing quotes as well as Loren’s strength! They are such an amazing couple and I can’t wait to keep reading what is in store for them!
This is the first time I read a book with a pro cyclist as the main character. I learned as I read on. The enjoyed the book. Seemed a little drawn out at times but the main gist of it was interesting. I felt so sad for all that Loren had been through and loved the strength of her character!
Not my usual go to book, it took me a while to get into this story. Very focused on women's cycling and very detailed in its descriptions. There was also romance to go along with it. Some parts of this story dragged on a little bit for me. I will still check out book 2.
