Only One Month

Rate this book
Aussie farmer Rob McIntyre keeps his private life strictly private. His sex life is confined to brief escapes to the city and he’s all but given up hope of ever having a romantic relationship here in the small farming community of June Valley. That is until city boy, Luke Wallis, comes to stay.

Rob has never been more tempted. But there’s no way he’ll risk his love life becoming the talk of the district and no way he’s going to risk his heart… no matter how much he finds himself falling for Luke.

That’s if Luke’s even into men… and Rob’s not about to ask. Rob’s just going to have to keep his attraction, and his hands, to himself until Luke’s gone. After all... it’s only one month.

Only One Month is a stand alone gay romance with explicit content not meant for readers under 18. It is approximately 86000 words, HEA and does not end in a cliffhanger.

4.5 WOW I'm impressed stars...

If you like the Red Dirt Heart (Red Dirt, #1) by N.R. Walker series, you should definitely read this book.

It takes place in Australia and there's a sexy but lonely farmer there named Rob. His sister convinces him to take on a boarder for one month while he does a government funded water quality study. Reluctantly, Rob agrees and Luke is not at all what he expected. Can you say "HAWT"...

If he only knew if he was gay!!!

This story is a slow burn start with Rob very cautious and lacking confidence. He tries to convince himself that hooking up with Luke is a bad idea. But the attraction is undeniable.

Simply wonderful and Luke is a great dirty-talker.

I'm not a huge fan of this writing style. The whole Luke said this and Rob did that and Luke thought such and such, made it feel flat and I didn't feel the connection between the two MC's. I nearly gave up on this several times because the first 50% of the book was made up of the two men acting like 12 year old girls. Both giving out HUGE signals to the other that they were interested but somehow both of them convinced themselves that the other wasn't remotely attracted to them. It was nothing short of irritating and their dancing around each other went on far too long.

To cut a long winded story short, closeted Rob has a farm and is convinced by his sister to allow Luke stay with him for a month while he carries out water studies. They fancy each other but keep it to themselves till eventually, they get a grip and start sleeping with each other. The month comes to an end and Luke wants to do the whole long distance thing but Rob says no and pushes him away, as he believes it won't work. They miss each other, Rob comes out to people and goes to win Luke back and somehow, it all works out in the end. This had the potential to be so much better.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have to say that I really enjoyed Rob and Luke's story even though it was only from Rob's POV. The plot was well thought out and the story very well told. Right from the get go, the author's descriptions of the setting has the reader (me) imagining a farm in Australia without it being too much. Rob and Luke are attracted to each other instantly and appreciate that I could feel Luke's attraction to Rob despite the one MC's POV. There was minimal backstory which I loved and the characters are very well developed.
I however thought the story would have been so much better had we been allowed to see it the way Luke does (Spoiler alert; we do see it in the Epilogue) but it would have been really cool to understand Luke better. The author pulled off telling the entire story from Rob's POV but it came off a little like Rob was whinny which wasn't all that great.
Anyway, I give it a 4-star for I loved it and would read another book by Hallie in the not so distant future.

3.5 rounded up

I was home sick yesterday and this was the perfect read, not too long, not too complicated.

I really enjoyed the Australian country farm setting, and I thought Rob and Luke were interesting and had good chemistry. I thought the writing was decent, and I felt invested in Rob and Luke's relationship.

The main issue I had with the book is that it ended up feeling a little drawn out and repetitive. Every chapter felt like more of the same with Rob struggling with his feelings, almost giving in, deciding not to give in, feeling conflicted, lather rinse repeat. Things got better once they finally hooked up 60% through, but even then, it felt like a LOT of sex scenes and even that began to feel repetitive.

Again, I still really enjoyed the book, the writing was good, and I definitely cared about the characters. A really sold choice from the Kindle Lending Library.

I was given a copy of this book free by the author in exchange for an unbiased review.

When I read, I like to get down and dirty with my men. Get into their lives and be in each scene. Unfortunately, with the way the author had chosen to write the story I wasn't able to, I felt more like a voyeur.
Written in third person present is for me, not an easy way to read. It took me out of the book.
That said, I enjoyed the story of Rob and Luke. I really wanted to bang their heads together as they were all Is he or isn't he. It was over the 50% mark before they got together and then the sex came thick and fast.

Had it not been for the writing style I would have given this story another star.

The writing drove me up the wall and the characters themselves only managed to add insult to injury. Ugh. No!! Glad I KUed this (and didn't purchase it like I had originally planned to)!! Lesson: Always, ALWAYS listen to instinct; I thank G-d for mine :-)!!

Nicely done

This started off a bit slow but it was a great story. This story was filled with poor or no communication. But once the communication lines were opened we saw beauty.

If you like an angsty, slow burn, this one will hit the mark. Rob lives on his farm in Australia. He seems resigned to a lonely life, with no one knowing he's gay. His sister asks him to let a friend, Luke, stay with him for a month while Luke does some work in the outback for his job. They seem to hit it off and Rob takes Luke to the local attractions since Luke isn't from the area. They seem to be giving each other lots of mixed signals though. They are are both very attracted to each other but can't seem to figure out if the other is interested despite the mixed signals they seem to be getting. It's quite the build up before they act on anything. Once they do, whoa, they make up for the lost weeks in a short amount of time. They are smoking hot together! Rob isn't sure what to do about the month ending though. How is he going to handle things when Luke goes back to his life. Rob has never had any luck with long distance relationships. Not to worry, it does all work out in the end.

I felt the writing and the plot were both solid. The characters were both likable both as individuals and as a couple. We get a bit more backstory on Rob and just enough on Luke. The book is more about their relationship over the four weeks and doesn't really delve into the guys themselves. I didn't feel like I needed to know all about their pasts though in order to understand what was going on during their time together. This story is smoking hot with the smexing. If you like hot and heavy you will get it here. The POV was from Rob's so we had to watch Luke to gather what he is thinking, which wasn't hard. It was clear how Luke felt. It would have been nice to actually get Luke's thoughts too, which was my only real complaint. Otherwise, I liked this book very much and would recommend it to others.

Everybody who likes romance for romance's sake will like this book better than I did, so don't be discouraged to read it. It's nice enough and two stars means that it was ok.

What did bug me though was the lack of an actual plot (i.e. things actually hapening outside the narrator's head - not talking to each other doesn't a plot make) and the pacing. The pacing was majorly off. We spend the first half of the book inside the narrator's head while he mentally tears petals off daisies "He's not gay. He's gay. He's interested in me. No, he can't be interested in me because he smiled at a woman. He's not gay. But he's gay because he smiled at me." Reading about Rob analysing the minutest variations of Luke's every facial expression was exhausting and went on forever. I skimmed a lot of that. Around the 50% mark they manage to pull their heads out of their respective behinds and then have a lot of sex. More skimming. Then Rob starts thinking again and decides that they don't have a future *insert major eyeroll*.

The book actually gets better by the 80% mark but then the first few months of their actual relationship get crammed into the last 10% of the book and that's just - no, no, no.

I will say that the writing is good and that the scenes where actually something happens are vivid. I also liked very much how the character of Rob was so intertwined with his farm and what it means to him. The farm and the weather are actually like strong side characters and that was well done.

So, this is by no means a terrible book, far from it but it could have done with a lot of trimming and evening out narration time and narrated time, meaning cutting out at least 30% in the beginning and adding them to the end, maybe with some plot. It's always nice when something actually happens in a book, actions and consequences - that sort of stuff.

Still, not bad for a first effort but I think the author can do better.

I literally stumbled across this book because I had actually read one of authors fanfic stories and she had mentioned at the end that she had some original work on amazon. Since I liked the fanfic I thought I would give this a try.

For the most part, I liked this story. There was a definitely a few things/moments that were new to me as an American reading an Australian set story that I didn’t quite know what the author was saying but it was easy enough to understand and get through. And the whole “are they or aren’t they gay?” thoughts that Rob had through the first half is definitely a thing every gay person has gone through, however this dragged out a little longer than it should have. And there were some spelling and grammar issues, words seemingly missing from the sentences, that needs some work but not too bad.

It's too much. Weeks of wanting and hiding, wondering, the heat, Luke's bare chest and low slung shorts, the fire yesterday... Now Rob's embarrassed himself again, embarrassed himself last night, and Luke must know how he feels but he’s not... he’s not storming away or deflecting or letting Rob down gently… Rob can’t… he doesn’t know what he should do, or what he wants or what he can have. He’s so done with thinking and it’s…

Story: Only One Month centers on Rob, a loaner and a farmer out in the country. The story begins with him thinking idly of his life in the country side, alone with only his thoughts and dreams. He wants to buy more land, and get a dairy farm going, but he’s having a bit of money troubles and needs a loan for the foundation. Enter his sister, Jules. She convinces him to take in her friend’s brother, Luke, to stay for the month while he’s working on his research project. The two men, though they get off to a shaky start, begin to find friendship, and what’s more companionship. Rob is wary of Luke, unsure of whether he’s interested as a friend or something more. Eventually the two men discover that they’re both pining for the same thing, but they realize it’s temporary. Luke has to go back, and Rob can’t shake the uncertainty in his heart.

Characters: This story was told in Rob’s point of view, but I didn’t mind the limited POV. He had a real internal struggle from the beginning. At first I felt for him, not knowing either whether Luke was just having a go at him, or whether he was really interested, but by about chapter 7, it was PAINFULLY clear that Luke was interested, and Rob was just being too coy for his own good. The signs were there, everywhere, and I was a bit annoyed I had to wait sixteen chapters for these guys to finally get together.

When they did get together, Rob accepts it for what it is, a friend with benefits thing. However, it’s clear that both he and Luke feel more for each other. I was surprised Rob was so open about his doubts and fears. I was actually glad for it because if he would have left Luke in the dark and had him go on a wild goose chase I would have probably stopped reading. Rob has some hesitancy about being out in his community. Which felt authentic and justified given the community he lived in. Still, I felt that the song and dance went on just a little too long between he and Luke, and they could have benefited more from hashing it out earlier.

Luke is a sweet heart, and I wanted to hold him so many times in this novel. When Rob is being daft, he doesn’t lash out, as maybe he should have, but is considerate and understanding of Rob’s’ situation. There was a chance his character could have turned in to a Gary Stu, but Luke is funny, and sarcastic, and witty and charming. He doesn’t give off a “perfect” demeanor. He’s just a really endearing guy and it’s hard to hate him, even when he is letting Rob have his way between them.

One of the biggest issues I had with this novel was the chemistry between the characters and the sex scenes. Not the execution, because the sex scenes are actually good. Really good. No, it was the continuous beating of a dead horse that I’m referring to.

When Luke arrives in June Valley Rob is already slobbering. There’s no angst as far as his sexuality is concerned, which is nice, but then we go through SIXTEEN chapters of he and Luke beating around the bush. Pun intended. They go back and forth with this maddening glancing, and grazing, and eye fucking. God it’s too much. By chapter 10 it felt like the author was trying to wring out an already wrung rag. I found myself saying “just fuck already”, numerous times through their banter and innuendos. It wasn’t cute, or funny, it was annoying. I wanted it to be over.

Sex: Thankfully when they finally do fuck it was worth the wait. If I’d read through sixteen chapters and the sex was terrible I probably wouldn’t have finished this book. That wasn’t the case. The sex scenes are intimate, and passionate, and sexy as hell. Luke’s got a mouth on him I wanted to stuff, and even Rob loosens up toward the middle. The author tries to make up for her sixteen chapters of angst with a sex in every chapter thereafter. Which I also find annoying, but I’d rather a flood than a drought.

Verdict: Although Deighton sets the country scene with vivid imagery and fine prose, the writing style is something you have to get used to. I personally am not a fan of third person present. It reminded me too much of fanfiction. I found out that this is the first novel the author has written having spent most of her life writing fanfiction. It’s not that the writing is bad, but this tense gives the writing an amateurish quality. If you can get past the writing style and the INCREDIBLE amount of, “should I, shouldn’t I”, angst in this novel, I think you’ll enjoy it. It turns out to be a sweet story with some great characters and steamy sex scenes. I would recommend for someone who wants an easy, light hearted read. The relationship itself, once it gets going, is comfortable and fun. Nothing too original here. Standard romance. The side characters aren’t oppressive, and neither is the conflict. It’s a short sweet tale about a country boy who falls in love with a city slicker. An angst ridden tale of two men finding happiness with one another and taking a chance on love.

I received one copy of this book at no charge in exchange for my honest review on Nautical Star Books.

In Only One Month by Hallie Deighton, Rob is an Aussie farmer who is definitely NOT out. He doesn’t think that being gay would go over well in his small farming community and he can’t risk the ranch on something as inconsequential as his love life. He enjoys occasional trysts far from home but that is as far as he is willing to go for his sex life. His well-meaning sister arranges for city boy Luke to stay with him for one month while he works on his research. Luke is into guys but without knowing Rob’s orientation, he is hesitant to let that be known. Who knows if the guy is a closet homophobe, right?

While I enjoyed Only One Month, I will say that it dragged on a LONG time before the characters finally got together. This is a relatively long story and by 50% they were still trying to tiptoe around each other just to see if the other one is gay. While I liked the writing style and the characters were very well developed, I was starting to get impatient with them. Actually, I really was most impatient with Rob who seemed just a little too insecure in my mind. I also felt that I got to know Rob much more than I did Luke and I would have liked to get more into his head than I did.

Overall, though, Only One Month by Hallie Deighton is a pretty good story. It is well written and the author does a great job at portraying the emotional side of each of these characters. Having been hurt in the past with attempts at long distance relationships, Rob is hesitant to try again and get his heart broken one more time. Luke seems like more of a happy go lucky sort of guy but seems to fall hard for Rob during his stay.

While the heat factor is definitely delayed for quite some time, a bit too long, I think….they are definitely scorching hot once they finally give in to the pull between them. They are creative, versatile and definitely steamy once they finally connect.

The setting is amazing and the author does a wonderful job of presenting the reader with an Aussie farm where you can smell the dust and practically feel the solitude. I loved Luke’s job testing the water nearby active fracking sites (an environmental issue I am passionate about). I actually would have liked to see more of his actual work weaved into the story.

I will say that I liked that the ending wasn’t perfect. There were no magical solutions to their problems but they found a happily ever after eventually with a bit of work. The last few chapters of the story are actually the main characters, having finally fallen in love, trying to work out their happily ever after.

I really enjoyed Only One Month by Hallie Deighton, however, I think it needed to be a bit shorter with the main characters acknowledging their attraction a little earlier. And a little less of Rob’s angst would have made him much less annoying.

This book hit the middle for me in terms of rating. It wasn’t horrible, the writing was okay and the storyline was also fine, but nothing stood out for me. The plot was almost too predictable and the characters (specifically Rob) became whiney in ways I couldn’t appreciate.

The first half of the book was spent with Rob angst-ing over his boarder, Luke a hunky guy that seemed to be sending mixed signals. This type of development and conflict is something that I LOVE reading, but with Only One Month it dragged. It literally took half the book for these two guys to get together and then the timeline began to weaken for me.

Granted there were plenty of gratuitous sex scenes to make up for the lengthy build-up, if that is something that you enjoy, but it came at the cost of repetitive internal struggles on Rob’s end. And props to Deighton for having her characters be versatile in the bedroom and breaking out of the stereotypical “big, buff guy = top versus city guy = bottom” kind of roles.

My other main issue was the pace of the book towards the end of the book. While Luke really did stay for a single month, the last third of the book takes place generally over the course of several months afterwards. I did not appreciate each chapter skipping over days, weeks, and months just to make the HEA plausible. This last chunk felt like a prolonged epilogue and left me feeling nothing. I didn’t care that they were FINALLY together (because I knew from the beginning that they would) and the tribulations that they had to go through seemed superficial and of Rob’s own making. I can’t be a part of a pity party when it could easily have been rectified.
I will say that I appreciated Rob’s growth in character, subtle as it was.

Only One Month may be something to consider if you want a mindless book to read. It will be going into my pile of “fluffy” materials to read on days when I’m not up for a struggling to understand the plot of a book. I will probably reread this during winter break when I can try it in one sitting and see if that changes my perspective. I did read this book over a few days and I can’t help but wonder if this disconnected reading impacted how I viewed the pace of the novel, which was what really killed it for me.

Final notes to make about this book:
It is written in third person
There is a lot of farming going on

3.5 stars

I feel like I really need to explain my rating on this book. It began as a solid 2 stars because I've a distinct dislike for stories written in the present tense, and then third person POV was added. It was like that annoying habit some people have of talking about themselves in the third person. “Alexis can't stand that type of book.” “Alexis thinks this the silliest way to write a book ever.” I'd at least have preferred the thoughts to be in italics, but all this is personal preference.

The start of the story wasn't a whole lot better. Main character (singular POV) Rob McIntyre (36) is a long time farmer, living and working the farm that's been in his family for 126 years. (I didn't even have to look that up, it was told to me many, many times throughout the text.) He’s hoodwinked by his sister into housing Luke Wallis who is testing water samples near fracking sites. (This job I liked, current and relevant.)

There is instant attraction on Rob’s part. He’s gay, knows it, indulges in it when he can, but he's not out to his family and friends. So, Rob turns every flirtation made by Luke into something else, convinces himself Luke is straight and his fear of long term relationships is enough of a deterrent for him to even try anything. This went on and on and on, ad nauseum.

Finally, at around 50%, they kiss and the storyline ramps into high gear. The scenes of initiate acts are extremely well done, eroding most of my prior dislike for this story.

An additional note: what I really liked best about Only One Month is the setting and dialogue. Set in Australia, I was offered seasons opposite to my own in the United States, and true dialect of the bush. Even descriptions as mundane as a car always called an ute, or Ta for “thank you” just made my day.

So first half blah, second half terrific. A sweet ending (in Luke’s POV, go figure) rounds out their HEA.

Setting: Australia

Rob: 30-something farmer living along, trying to keep the family farm afloat.
Luke: 30-something visitor staying with Rob short term while he works in the area.

This book was a very, VERY slow burn. It worked for me. The author kept teasing the reader about when the MCs would figure out their subtle flirtatious signs and get together! Rob acted a bit immature when it came to relationships, but because he hasn't had much experience, I felt that that worked for this story.

What was very unique to ME, was how VERY AUSSIE it was! Yes, of course, it was set in Australia. Of course I don't want it to be Americanized. I enjoyed looking up words to figure out what the heck the characters were talking about. It just happened so frequently that it interrupted the flow of the story. Maybe it's just me and I live in a cave. Did you know TA means thank you? and that a KIWI is more than a fruit? hmmm

This is my first book from this author and I'll be reading more of her. And I'll be better prepared with the lingo! TA for reading!

What??? Okay, guys, the rating on goodsreads? Way off chart!!

This novel is awesome :D

Why?
Well, let's start with the writing style. It was really great to read this novel, mainly because I liked the writing style. We get to see Rob as a farmer, get to really know both of our characters. Sure, I would have loved to have Luke's POV at some times but Rob's POV really showed us what's going on in his head. He is the character who doesn't voice his feelings as much as Luke does so it made total sense to have the focus on him.
There were some hilarious elements in the novel and the descriptions of the landscape was pretty impressive and nice to read, especially due to the fact that it's important to our characters.

Characters?
Not much to say here. Loved both of them.
Luke is the intellectual guy who stays with Rob for a while. He is hip, modern, has the most awesome group of friends ever and is just a super relaxed and fun guy who embraces life.
Rob is a bit like his opposite but not really. He is a farmer, loves his job and his family; he's also a firefighter and of course (just like Luke) super hot. Too bad, though, that he removed his beard. Anyays, I loved Rob because he is your typical grumpy and gruffy nature guy. But Rob's much more than that cause he actually connects with a lot of people in his hometown.
So, yeah, both of them have many sides and are just perfect for each other.

Plot?
Amazing.
I love that we have some suspense, that we continually ask ourselves: OMG, when are you finally going to chase him?
I love that it's not some kind of insta-love but one that is built up over time. I love that they try to gauge the other's reaction.
Hach. Awesome novel!

Definite must-read!

Ooookkkkayyyy.... Weelllll....

Rob is a farmer living in June Valley. His sister convinces him to take on Luke as a boarder for a month so he can complete his research. Rob agrees grudgingly and Luke moves in. Beautiful, smart, irresistable Luke. Rob wants Luke but he's scared Luke isn't gay and there is also the fact that Rob is still in the closest in June Valley.

This story had all the making of a good story but the first 3/5 of the book was such a drag. I had alreqdy decided that the story was a solid two stars and ended up putting it down several time and was tempted to make it a DNF. But I persevered! And I'm happy I did. Because the last part was actually pretty decent. I mean Rob took a loooonnng time to get his head screwed on and Luke waited around for him to do it. I was so annoyed reading how stupid they (really I mean Rob) were. Nobody talked to anyone. Just a whole lot of assumptions going on.

I did like the book tho. Especially the sexy bits. Oooohh the sexy bits were sexy. Luke, luke, luke, beautiful, sexy dirty dirty Luke. I liked Luke a lot and Rob was good for him. Even tho I was screaming for them to get on with the relationship I wasn't disapppointed when they finally got together. They had good chemistry.

Overall it was one of those books that burn too slow but ultimately gives you a small smile when you manage to finish it. It's worth a read.

In a word?

Wow.

This is one of those rare books I could read over and over again and simply never tire of. The story was comfortable, beautiful and heart-wrenching in so many ways. Rob and Luke are endearing together and, even though I was forced to suffer through some unwanted and uncomfortable angst, I couldn’t wait for them to get their HEA.

The characterization throughout was magnificent, and the research on farming was fairly accurate and thorough (thank you so much! we with ag ties appreciate it) – and I was thrilled that the author chose to explore robotic dairying and not romanticize dairy farming as a money-making business. Author Hallie Deighton is creatively gifted, a masterful storyteller who doesn’t rely on retelling the same old tired story or using sex as the glue that binds two people together. She transcends the reader into the story itself through honest and raw emotions, the stunning setting, and vivid characterization. This is definitely not a nail-biting, fast-paced drama (thank God), but if you’re seeking a tender and true love story, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It made me feel all warm and giddy, and I hated for it to end.

I’m looking forward to reading further works by this author, especially if she continues to pen M/M romances.

A free copy of the book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This book doesn't exactly cover new ground in the genre, but it is an entertaining, sweet read with no angst. If you need a happy little escape, this book will do the trick.

I had a few things that kept this from a higher rating:
1. The character of Luke wasn't very well developed. He was portrayed the way Rob saw him, which was idealized.
2. Rob's inability to read signals became comical after a while, then moved on to ridiculous.
3. Use of the first person present tense. I almost had to stop reading the book because it sounded so strange to my ears. I'm glad I didn't, though.

What I liked:
1. The setting showed a slice of life I know little about.
2. Rob was a sweetheart and it was easy to root for him.
3. You could see the HEA coming from a mile away, so it was easy to forge forward with the book without being afraid of an ugly twist.

I'll definitely be looking for more books by this author.

I like my aussie mm reads, and most of my favourites are set in the country (I'm from the country), but if you are hoping for another Red Dirt Heart or The Shearing Gun, you are doing to be disappointed. This is why I was. There was no story apart from the romance, so for me I was always waiting for something else to happen. The style of writing was too much did this did that, when stuff was actually happening and there was lots of dialogue I started to get into it, but then it would stop. So for me this one was a miss, and I hate saying that about an aussie country mm

I received a copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

This book was really cute and sweet. Rob is a lonely farmer who keeps his love life separate from his work/family life on the farm. Luke comes along as a boarder who just needs a room to rent from Rob. The two hang out as friends, and an attraction begins to grow between them.

This story moved pretty slowly, but I enjoyed getting to know Rob and Luke a little bit at a time. It felt like a natural pace, especially for a farm (I would imagine). Rob is 36 and still closeted to the town, of course he is going to move slowly! The connection between them felt authentic and romantic.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a sweet romance with a slow burn.

I've been following Hallie's Sherlock fanfic for quite a while now. She is a brilliant writer, and her original work showed no less ability. I fell in love with both Luke and Rob and found myself rooting for their love early on.

So why only 4 stars? Well there were pieces that felt very repetitive. It didn't make it any less enjoyable but means I can't quite give it the best, especially as having read other pieces of hers I know there were some that wordsmith wise a bit more beautiful. Still it was a great purchase and very enjoyable. Keep writing Hallie- I need another gorgeous romance to tide me over!

Really liked this stories. Rob is a wonderful MC torn between his own needs and fear of what will happen to his relationship with the farming town he lives near. He pines for Luke and you can tell Luke is trying to give him all the signals that Rob just can't quite believe are real. The setting on an Australian farm (ranch?) is so good it almost seems like a third MC in the story. Wonderful.

Sizzling Australian Outback

Loved this book. The build was slow and easy... some laughs and some tears...stayed up to the wee hours to finish!

This novella is one of those works where very little happens. Some reviewers complain about it and they miss the point entirely: the lack of plot is not an oversight nor is it a flaw. It is a stylistical choice that requires another set of tools to evaluate and rate it.

Everything about this M/M romance is understated. There are no billionnaires, no dark and tall guys with a mysterious past, no undercover special agents trying to uncover a fishy trafficking. The leads are two Australian men with nothing remarkable about them except their being perfect for each other. They are likeable, they are conflicted (well, one of them is conflicted), they feel real: the sort of neighbours you could have if you lived in Australia. They have everyday problems complicated a bit by their being gay as not all of Australia, especially not rural Australia is comparable to Sidney.

Other reviewers complain about the excess of angst. Once again I disagree.

MILD SPOILER ALERT - MILD SPOILER ALERT
Rob is not in pain. He is not troubled. He has the problems every gay man could have who grows up in a rural, provincial setting. He is afraid he is not at liberty to be open about himself as he still has to live every day with those people who might (or not) decide to deny him any help out of bigotry. What actually happens in this book is his realising that it is this fear and nothing else that keeps him from having a fulfilling love life.
END OF SPOILER ALERT - END OF SPOILER ALERT

The author spends about half of her story describing the irresistible attraction between the two and the other half picturing them in very explicit sexual situations. Over the whole lot of it, the two men do a bit of growing-up, of learning what they really want from their life and they manage their HEA.

It is not easy to manage a story like this. To keep the narrative tension up.
Here and there pace stutters and I cannot honestly say that this book is impossible to put down.
On the other hand it is easy to go back to it: Ms Deighton has managed to create a story that is heartwarming and feels real and her M/M sex scenes are not half bad, which is quite a feat indeed.
Writing is fluid, with only a couple of grammatically dubious sentences. My only qualm is about the Australian idioms which make the setting more authentic but are not to be found in common dictionaries.
