“Remember, lasses. Through Hope, Faith, and Honor, ye can rule,” were the last words Lady Hope MacAlister’s father spoke before dying. Those very words direct her every action and thought. Sword fighting and leading the men of her clan was second nature to Hope and she has little time for herself or any thoughts of love. Until Aidan MacKerry is captured spying on the clan.

She is beautiful, strong, and quick to pull a sword. But when he kisses her, all thoughts of the lairdship Aidan MacKerry seeks flee his mind. When the enemy continues to undermine Hope, Aidan is determined to aid her—only he didn’t think he’d lose his heart to the Laird of Wild Thistle Keep. When the enemy reveals Aidan’s secret, he must fight for his right to be laird and prove, despite their differences, he loves Hope.

The enemy refuses to back down and continues to threaten not only Hope, but the security of the entire clan. Only together will they be able to save the clan and save their love.

I'm a mom, wife, and writer. A Michigan native, I've moved from one Rochester to another Rochester to marry the love of my life. Life is exciting, exhausting, chaotic and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I love writing historical novels with a Celtic flair. Scotland and Ireland are my favorite locations to write about. Nothing is better than a hero in a kilt and a strong heroine to give him the run for his money!

I love books with guys in kilts. Give me a broody laird with a brogue who can't keep his hands off his woman and I'm there!

This had a great premise. Hope MacAlister is laird of her clan when Aiden McKerry shows up. He's been taught his whole life that he is to be Laird of Clan McAlister, so he intends to show up and take over. It shouldn't be hard since he has the backing of the council, and there's a woman in charge. What Aiden doesn't expect is to fall for her.

This was slow moving and kind of repetitive during the first part of the book. However, once Aiden and Hope start giving into their attraction for each other, things pick up the pace. I liked their resolution of who would be running the clan. I'm not going to tell you, you need to read the book and find out LOL

Wow! This is my first Madelyn Hill book and it won’t be my last!

Everything about this book is true to Scottish roots from it’s series name, The Wild Thistle, to the brogue and Scottish turns of phrase. I loved each page, pouring through it as the passion and determination of each character leapt off the page! I just love that she did her research–it really flowed off the pages and as an author, it kept my attention even before I was invested in the story.

Can a clan be led by a woman and still remain strong? This is the question for Clan MacAlister and their Laird, Hope. With treachery, lies, and a braw warrior with challenging her position as Laird, she can’t allow even the slightest inch of compromise. But compromise is a sweet temptation, especially in the form of Aidan MacKerry. But can she trust him, likely not…but deep in the heart of the fierce lard, is the heart of a woman that wants to be loved.

Not just respected.

Aidan wants nothing more than to secure the place stolen from his father, of course that place is occupied by the most beautiful, fierce and capable woman he’s ever encountered. His determination threatens to weaken under her green gaze, especially when he starts to uncover the depths of the passion for her clan, and for him…hidden deep within.

But the council of Clan MacAlister has secrets of its own, and threatens to destroy the fragile trust that’s begun to bloom between Aidan and Hope. Can they put aside their differences, their own power struggle for the good of their clan? Or will the hunger for power be stronger than the passion they’ve found one another? And let me tell you, that passion? Well it basically heats up the pages! Madelyn Hill spins a fantastic tale, one that completely transports you to the wilds of Scotland, where the thistle grows wild and where adventure seems to find it beginnings.

REVIEW: HIGHLAND HOPE is the first installment in Madelyn Hill’s WILD THISTLE Highland, historical, romance trilogy. This is Lady Hope MacAlister, and Aidan MacKerry’s story line.

Told from several third person points of view including Hope and Aidan HIGHLAND HOPE focuses on Aidan MacKerry’s return to his boyhood home-the MacAlister Keep, and a legacy he hopes to avenge and retain. Years earlier Aidan and his family had been ousted from their clan, and in the process Aidan and his father lost any hope of retaining the title of Laird. Enter Lady Hope MacAlister, the Laird of Wild Thistle Keep, and the woman with whom Aidan would fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Aidan and Hope, and the simmering betrayal that lies close to the surface regarding Aidan’s return.

HIGHLAND HOPE is a slow building story line that follows Laird Hope MacAlister as she struggles to gain the respect of the clan and the council but not everyone is happy with a woman in charge. Aidan’s appearance brings with it a renewed sense of purpose for the council, but a purpose that hides a secret agenda.

The relationship between Aidan and Hope is acrimonious. Hope senses that Aidan knows more than he is revealing; and Aidan is a man determined to regain the title he knows he deserves. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of sexually graphic language and text. I had hoped for more interaction between the leading characters.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Hope’s younger sisters Faith and Honor, as well as an older woman named Nora who is more of a mother figure to the MacAlister clan.

HIGHLAND HOPE is an engaging tale of passion and power. The premise is spirited and dramatic but predictable-the requisite evil is easily deduced; the romance is sensual and uplifting; the characters are dynamic and inspiring. HIGHLAND HOPE will entertain fans of the Scottish romance genre.

A bit of a mixed bag for me, although I kept reading on as the final fate of the couple was in jeopardy until the end. Hope is the heir to the leadership of her clan – her father’s death Ma bit unconventional from other heroines as she’s more comfortable in plotting, planning and fighting than serving tea or batting her lashes. Unfortunately, her ascension to leadership is not a simple one: while Highlanders are known for their infighting, the attacks on clan MacAlister are increasingly devious and determined.

Captured as a spy, Aidan MacKerry has secrets beyond those laid at his feet in his now compromised position. But, he also is drawn to Hope: her strength and fearlessness, her beauty, and her determination. And he just can’t forget that kiss, even as she appears to have her mind only on the business at hand. I wanted a bit more from Aidan: he’s honorable with the intention of the moment, but the secret just held everything in the land of suspended belief in him for too long. Yes, there was a connection between he and Hope, and he does have moments where it clearly shows he’s on her side, but I was still uneasy waiting for that next shoe to drop.

Mystery and intrigue play a large part in this story. It seems as if everyone has something to hide, and not always a logical reason for it. Aidan’s secret was hinted at, ignored, hinted again and revealed: at times it became the sole focus, taking from the very real threats to Hope. Secondary characters moved through the story, some impactful others distracting, and did add to the sense of immediacy here. Overall, I wanted a bit more interplay between Aidan and Hope on the way from attraction to happiness, rather than leaving me with the sense that attraction led the way.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the author via the tour company for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Round Two: I am glad that I didn't read my previous review before reading this book again. Had I, I probably would have skipped it and saved myself a few gray hairs.

My biggest problem both times is that the whole book is all about who Aidan MacKerry really is and it felt like a very anticlimactic moment when he says his name and Hope is like "Oh!" and instantly feels betrayed.

Sorry, the only thing I feel betrayed by is that it took until I was 92% of the way through the book for the BIG REVEAL. No wonder it took me almost a month to read again.

This book has so much potential - if the cat and mouse games had been kept to a dull roar. I'm about to start book 2 for the first time and am hoping that it doesn't continue this huge cliffhanger into the third book.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for my participation in the blog tour. My opinions and thoughts in this review are completely my own.

I wanted to love this book. It had the makings of a great book, but fell short due to the fact that the BIG SECRET that is mentioned throughout the book is never really resolved. We finally find out what the heckfire Aidan MacKerry is hiding, but the reveal was very anti-climatic to me. Why should Aidan have been Laird? Was there another reason that Aidan's family was banished from Wild Thistle Keep? What does Nora know? What is Liam's illness?

I feel that it ended unfinished and that in the next two books the questions above are addressed.

Even having said all of that, I loved the characters and felt that for the most part, they were well developed and easy to like. I'm looking forward to getting to know Honor and Faith in their respective books!

I really enjoyed this book. The author set up a wonderful story which will continue to book 2 and 3, but this book could certainly stand on its own. Hope and Aidan have to fight for what they want, which sets up a great conflict. There are sparks and chemistry which sizzle off the pages. This is a fast read and the interaction with all of the characters is engaging. I love books set in Scotland and this one did not disappoint! I can't wait for the other books in the trilogy.

Uncaged Book Reviews:

There is some mystery, and layers of deceit, and a heap of romance. I would have liked to see more of Hope and Aidan’s interactions, but it’s an interesting read that kept me engaged throughout. The characters are well developed, and the author did a good job giving strength to Hope, but also giving her vulnerability and heart to keep her believable and likable.

Rather too explicit sexually for my liking.

Many typos, good storyline, Scots dialogue seems rather contrived at times. A glossary of the Gaelic would be very helpful.

Punctuation and Spelling Error Hamper Enjoyment

I love a good Highland romance and especially enjoy a series set around sisters (being one of five myself). This is the first book of this series about the MacAlister sisters. The book opens with a prologue of the traumatic and dramatic scene that happened in the girls’ childhoods, the death of their father. His parting words to them set them each on a personal journey to fulfill his dream for the clan and them. The two younger girls are encouraged to explore their individual talents for the benefit of their clan, but the older sister—whom this book is about—has a much more cut-and-dried path. She is meant to become the laird of their clan. Before his passing, her father taught her about the business and managing aspects of leadership (which her mother carried on), and she also learned how to fight by joining in the sparring between the men and boys. After the prologue, this book starts with the girls’ mother's funeral. Hope, the oldest, is still young, and she knows she's going to have a fight with the clan council to retain her lairdship. Her father also had a requirement that she had to be wed before she could lead.

This is quite a complicated story, but I'll stop here in describing it in detail. Suffice to say, a young man enters the story who bears a strong grudge toward the clan, though some of the council very much desire that he takes over (undermining the lady laird). I found the character of Hope to be a fasting one. It made me question whether or not women were actually called “lairds” if they held a position of leadership in their clan. I know that women sometimes did act as leaders when there was no male heir or the male heir was too young to take over. But would a woman actually be called a laird? It just seemed odd to me. But that's not really super important. She is a super strong and tough female, both mentally and physically, a match for any man on just about any level. I liked her strength. I honestly didn't understand why she made the initial decision that she did about the man in question. I don't feel like there was enough reason or discussion/thought of the reason for it to truly make sense. It felt like it was just needed for the plot, and I don’t like it when plot points feel like that. I had a tough time liking the hero. He just had such a chip on his shoulder about what happened in the past and the way he kept negatively thinking about the heroine, well, it just all rubbed me wrong.

There are also some substantial issues with grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage in this book. It doesn't seem like the novel was professionally edited, and this book has been out for some time. Commas were used willy-nilly, sometimes added where they should not have been—causing problems with meaning, requiring a second look to figure out—at other times being completely omitted, like the required comma between independent clauses in a compound sentence joined by a coordinating conjunction. There are even some wrong words—sometimes just a typo but other times just flat out incorrect meaning as well. For instance, exulted and exalted were mixed up twice, so I'm thinking that was an error of understanding by the author. A spelling one was cursed versus coursed. For all these reasons, I do not feel like I can wholly recommend this book. If you don't mind a hero who takes a while to warm up to or egregious errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage, you might enjoy this Highland tale.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

The Laird MacAlister

Laird Hope is a young woman that became Laird at 12 years old because of the death of her father. With the help and guidance of her Mother she has brought peace and happiness for her people and caused them to prosper. The problem now is her mother has died leaving her no choice but to marry according to the command of her Father at his death. Her being a woman has caused Liam the council member for Clan MacAlister that has opposed her from the beginning to betray her by sending for the son of the ousted Laird potential to take the Lairdship away from her.
Aiden MacBerry whose Dad has recently died comes at the call of the council and his promise to his father to take his place as Laird. Aiden is unaware of the circumstances facing him and that the Laird is the beautiful and capable redhead Hope. This is not at all what he expected and when he is thrown into the dungeon his only excuse for camping outside the castle on clan property is he was summoned. The missive from the council goes missing so he has no way to justify his presence there. Hope seeing him brought in by her cousin comes up with the idea to marry this stranger and keep him at arms length to satisfy the council having no idea why he is there. This is the beginning of her first attraction to a man and she isn't sure what to do with these feelings and it's the start of his plans to take over her position. Love and honor become a very real tug of war for him and her and the start of a love that will last a lifetime when he has never believed it possible for him.
I loved these characters and their vulnerability to each other. This was a good book and I look forward to the next one.

The start to a new series, or trilogy, always involves world building and character introduction.
Each of these three books will feature one of three sisters, daughters of Laird MacAlister, who bore no legitimate sons. A fierce warrier, he knew it could happen that his daughter may one day be the next clan ruler. Lady Hope MacAlister is next in line after her mother passes and has been trained in what is neccessary to be a laird.

With clan loyalty there also comes jealousy and secrets and deception. When the Laird is a woman, there are always men who won't accept her rule or believe they are better suited and resent her orders. As soon as her mother takes her last breath, Lady Hope knows she must marry, to protect herself, her sisters and her clan. She will arrange a marriage of convenience and duty.

Almost immediately, Aidan MacKerry is dropped in front of her. No build up or pretense of anyone else vying for her hand. Time is of the essense and being decisive, Lady Hope declares her decision.
This wasn't exactly what Aidan had planned, Hope is not his idea of the idea wife, but his goal is to become Laird MacAlister.

The writing is straight forward. It moves at a steady pace. We know there are secrets at every turn. The sexual tension between the two main protagonists builds slowly yet steadily. How will it turn out? Can they admit that they may have some goals in common and a joining could be more than a business agreement?

An interesting historical read that sets up the following installments.

I tried to finish this one despite it being disjointed. The alternating repetitious inner monologues of Hope then Aidan in between chapters did not help in the flow of the story. How many times must the reader be subjected to the same angst or pledge that both had separately promised their sires? I had even allowed some contemporary words and phrases given that this trash was written by a Millennial or somebody inured in Contemporary language sans research on this segment of writing a historical novel... but then in Chapter 18 there was the word "okay" I do not know if that was an editing error but OKAY according to Goggle is ~ "mid 19th century (originally US): probably an abbreviation of orl korrect, humorous form of all correct, popularized as a slogan during President Van Buren's re-election campaign of 1840 in the US; his nickname Old Kinderhook (derived from his birthplace) provided the initials." It is 'uniquely' American English and was not yet a word given this book's Timeline of 1703 to 1713. Not only that this book lacks cohesion it is also fake or inauthentic or the word "okay" ruined the tenuous semblance of historical plausibility. Do not waste your time reading this twaddle.

I’m a sucker for Scottish historical romances, so I was excited to read and review Highland Hope. And, I was not disappointed. This book is a wonderful start to the proposed trilogy and left me wanting to know more about this family. I also enjoyed the intrigue that was interwoven throughout the story from start to finish.

There are a number of supporting characters in the story which, in most cases, worked well. However, in a few instances, I felt they detracted from what should be the main focus of a romance ... the hero and heroine. I would have liked more “growing relationship” between them. We know they’re going to get their happily-ever-after ... it’s the way romances work. I just wanted more of the development.

However, that said, this one little quirk of mine does not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story. I look forward to reading the next books in this series.

The first book in the Wild Thistle Triology series. I have read this whole series backwards I now want to reread and do it in order, there maybe something I missed by doing what I did. Lady Hope MacAlister’s father told his daughters just before he died, “Remember, lasses. Through Hope, Faith, and Honor, ye can rule,” she is now Laird of Wild Thistle Keep. When Aidan MacKerry is caught spying on the clan he has to work by her side. Two people that should not find love together, I enjoyed reading their story. Wonderful! This is a book where intrigue and deception abound. I was drawn into the story at the beginning, and willingly stayed in that world until the last page. In fact, it left me wanting more.....and the great news is that there are two more books in the series. It is a well conceived, well written treat you won’t want to miss

A good read

Well developed characters and set in the Highlands, what more could you as for. The plot twists and turn but in the end all is right with the world and love wins out. The story is mostly well paced with only occasional bogginess with the rehashing, retelling of the backstory and mental anguish of the main characters.

I’ve read several of the author’s other books and Ms Madelyn provided another very enjoyable read.

Head strong lasses and brawny highland men always a good read!

As female laird, Hope MacAllister leads her clan peacefully and fairly but now that her mother who has been helping her lead her clan has died, she finds she must get married to continue in her role as laird. In drops hunky highland stranger Aiden MacKerry and the sparks fly and the games begin! Fun and relatively quick read.

A good story....but

While the story was good, a reader doesn't need to be reminded that she is the laird...repeatedly. Also, there are several errors that should have been caught during editing-foe example "him" that should have been "her" in several locations. That being said, the story is good and moves quickly.

Different

A disagreement among counsel about how the clan should go about handling their affairs is the basic plot. How this is all revealed and what ultimately happens you must read to find out. I will admit to a happy ever after romance.
