Attacked as a child by a powerful and vindictive sorceress, Abby Cameron has grown into a rather reclusive witch with a cursed face and a big heart.
Her life is predictable and unexciting until a young wolf comes calling, desperate for help. When the local alpha shows up angry and accusing, she realizes she has made a terrible mistake. And no matter what, she must fix it before the alpha, the pack, and the town are destroyed.
But that isn't the only mistake Abby will make when it comes to Eli Dean.
As she gets to know him, Abby's feelings for him begin to change, and she soon finds herself in unfamiliar, heartbreaking territory.
When he’s injured and death walks a little too close to all of them, she's willing to risk everything to heal him.
But will she be able to get past the soul crushing fear and risk herself for love?
Laken was first published in 2008. After a few exciting years with her publishers, she struck out on her own to write the now complete Rune Alexander series, and never looked back.
She shares her Ohio home with three spoiled dogs, two fish, and a tenacious African Violet. She drinks too much coffee and continues burning up the keys of her trusty laptop, getting the stories out of her head and into her readers' hands.
Different and slower moving than I'm used to for this author
I've thought about my review and rating and finally decided on a neutral three stars. I love Ms. Canes Shiv Crew series. This new series, the Waifwater Chronicles is very different from her other series. I guess I'm just used to all the action, adventure, Gore and romance from her other writing. I didn't love this new series but also don't dislike it. The storyline was new and different. The characters just didn't get me all wound up and emotional like I'm used to for Ms. Canes writing style. Do I recommend this new series for a read? Of course. If you want something much more mellow then this would work for you. Will I continue on with the series? Most likely as I do want to see what happens next. Happy reading!
She's done it again! Laken Cane's second series, The Waifwater Chronicles, is a fantastic read that takes you into another world. Her ability to suck you into Waifwater and keep you there until she spits you out on the other side is a true testiment to her talent as an author. I loved the hero and heroine and felt like I became a resident of Waifwater. This story is very different from the Rune Alexander series and though I enjoy that series immensely, I think The Waifwater Chronicles will quickly become one of my favorites....if it hasn't already!
A dash of darkness, a touch of magic, and a large helping of romance! Laken Cane stirs emotions with her new Waifwater series. Although it isn't as dark as Shiv Crew, I believe this series will be just as coveted. Thank you, Laken! Keep writing! And hurry with book #2!!!
This was a great first book in Laken's newest series. Very likeable characters and the storyline is very interesting and keeps you involved since this wasn't like anything I'd read before. Another great job Laken! Can't wait to read the next one in this series!!!
Unbreakable is the story of love, betrayal, and healing. Abby Cameron, the local witch, lives an isolated life. Scary to behold, she keeps to herself, selling the occasional spell to make ends meet. When trouble knocks on her door, Abby makes a big mistake with the best of intentions. To make things right, Abby has to get over herself to work with the local wolves and her eclectic family to right the wrong. Working far closer with Eli, the local Alpha, then Abby is comfortable with, causes her to reevaluate her place in the world. Confronted with betrayals of the worst kind, Abby and Eli forge a partnership which sets her future in a direction she never thought possible.
Lake Cane’s venture from dark urban fantasy to paranormal romance in this novel is a seamless transition; she was made to write this book as it unfolds gracefully, naturally, and with painful exquisiteness. I was captured from the beginning and look forward to reading more about Abby and the Waifwater Chronicles.
It's no secret that Laken Cane is my favorite author. I fell in love with her after discovering her incredibly awesome Rune Alexander Series. When I heard she was writing a new paranormal romance series, I was super excited to get my hands on the book. Unbreakable is breathtaking. A bit different from the Rune Alexander Series, not as dark, lighter with more romance, but definitely not lacking in action. As with any of Laken's books, the story grabbed me from the very start and I simply couldn't put the book down. The characters are superb - who can deny the sparks that fly between a witch and a hot alpha wolf. I have found that where Laken's books are concerned, I am simply captivated by her writing. I literally find myself sucked into the incredible world she creates. Definitely a recipe for perfection and I highly recommend checking out Laken's work.❤️
Don't stop writing Laken! You must continue to feed my addiction (for both Waifwater Chronicles & the Rune Alexander series)!!
I absolutely adore Laken Cane, and her Rune Alexander series is at the top of my favorites list. So, when I caught wind of this new series, I was more than a little excited.
Abby starts off as the perfect protagonist. Introverted because of a curse/flaw, but still sought out for her talents. I had no idea what to think about these characters, so I found myself sort of becoming Abby as I read. I felt about these characters the way Abby did. I trusted the ones she trusted, disliked the ones she did, and slowly warmed to her adventures much like she did herself.
This author has a beautiful way of creating strong female characters that just take command of a story. I breezed through the book, and had to force myself to slow down and savor the moments of and immediately proceeding the climax. I apparently had my blinders on, because I didn't see 'that' coming! I hated the end because I wanted MORE! I'm attached to these characters and pups already, and I can't wait to see how their stories evolve.
Wow. Another hit from author Laken Cane. I fell in love with her writing with her Rune Alexander series and when I heard she was writing another series, I was ecstatic. I've been anxiously awaiting this book .
Abby is a witch, cursed as a child to look like a hag, she lives a very lonely life. She has her familiars and one friend, Becky. People of Waifwater are terrified of her appearance, but that doesn't stop them from buying spells from her. A scared werewolf comes to Abby for her help to get away from her abusive Alpha and pack. Abby helps her. . . but at what price?
This book was everything I could have hoped for. There's danger, mystery, betrayal, secrets, demons . . . I cannot wait for the next book! Five stars for an amazing book!
Abby is a wonderful, Intelligent, and inspiring main character. She's strong and vulnerable. Responsibility is hers. She owns up to her mistakes while maintaining balance within her control. Abby's mistakes cause a domino effect on her town, clients and herself. The alpha wolf's talisman was stolen and it must be returned, however, it must first be found. Friends may be true OR, they may not. Family may be the enemy OR, they may be the victims. Great storyline, characters are believable, everything is creative, intriguing, and pulls the reader into the book. Loved it and can't wait to read the next one.
I got hooked on Laken Cane's Rune series after the first book.. However with this one I think I fell in love within the first few chapters!!! Abby is absolutely amazing! To be cursed like that and not be broken makes the story even better.. Of course Laken had those twists that make you unable to put the book down had to devour this book in one sitting! I can't wait to find out what happens next!
To me, the sign of a gifted writer is that they can write different genres and do it well. Ms. Cane is such a writer. Her stories always captivate and beg you to finish them in one sitting. I loved this story so much. The broken, scarred woman who holds her own and the blooming sweet love that she finds is so endearing, you can't help but love Abby. Eli is kind of a stranger since we don't get his POV but he has his moments. What a great book!
I feel like I must have read a different book from all the other 4+ star reviews. The dialog was imprecise and ambiguous, the books events felt disjointed and only loosely related to each other and the overall story, and the worldbuilding was nearly nonexistent. I could not, in good conscience, recommend this to anyone.
Well, color me impressed - this short book was much better than I thought it would be. It has an almost gothic vibe mixed in with a vulnerable and layered main character, a non-cheesy alpha, a small twisted town, and the family hiding in the "pocket" - it's definitely unique and not fully a romance only. The story was impossible for me to put down - on to the second.
I love this book, Laken Cane has written a story that includes witches, demons and werewolves so well that you fall into her world. Her plot line is engaging and enjoyable. The main character is easy to like and root for, the plot twist will keep you on your toes.
I fell in love with Abby and Eli as soon as I started reading the book. Unbreakable draws you in from the first page. There is never a dull moment in Unbreakable.
I liked this book, but there's still a lot I didn't like. So it gets 3 stars, as I finished it and enjoyed it. First, this book contains the topic of rape. So be aware if this is a trigger, as it gets mentioned frequently.
What I liked: The character had some really horrible things she had to overcome, and I think she did beautifully. I rooted for her all the way. She was strong and unique and self sufficient. Responsible and kind. Not as immature as most other paranormal female leads.
The world building was exceptionally interesting. Differences and a unique setting I haven't seen in other series yet.
The bonding of the sisters in the end were beautifully written. I loved it. I think I would love to read more about Jewel.
I also loved reading about a strong and capable mother. The bond between them.
What I disliked: The topic of her rape wasn't sufficiently handled. The male lead dismissed her fear of being touched as an offense against him, for example. Complete lack of compassion, understanding and sympathy, even if he didn't yet know, he could've guessed. The writer also didn't really delve into how it would've made a woman feel. It was like her female lead had a broken arm in the past. Not a hugely emotional issue that would leave a lasting impact.
For example. The male appeared on her doorstep a few days after they met and basically stated that they would have sex that night. Regardless of how it would make a rape victim feel. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd imagine she'd need to be handled kindly, gently, and given AMPLE time to first get to know him. Then learn how to trust him. Not within a few minutes, but days, weeks, months, even years. Then learn how to handle the lightest, non-threatening of touches. Then when SHE's ready, more can be initiated from her side. The author basically stomped over any such feelings and made it clear the man has spoken and the woman must now listen. Urgh.
She thought he was a rapist in the morning, and by evening she was hurt because he only kissed her forehead? After knowing him for about 12 hours?!?!?! That was seriously screwed up. Again, I think the author dissed on how a true victim would've felt.
The whole insta-love just ain't ever working, in my opinion. Not even from a starving female. The alpha saw a hideous creature, but fell in love within 2 days? C'mon! To really "see her" as they claimed, he had to get to know her. Get to know her heart behind the curtain of hair. And not force her to show her face to him every chance he gets. He had the empathy and awareness and kindness of a bear! No, less even, but he thinks he "sees her"? He doesn't even "get" women in general, that's for sure! Let alone understand a severely traumatised one.
The author never addressed the Beta wolf again. He attacked her, the alpha accused her of lying, and that's it? Nothing about it again?
And why were ALL the males rapists, attackers, adulterers or assholes? Every male mentioned in the book fell into one of those categories. Why? If we live in a world where the majority of men were so vile, I would've liked having a pocket myself to hide in. Fortunately, there's still millions of kind gentlemen around. I like to see them in books too.
The end scene was really badly written. One mere human were attacking 2 very strong and capable witches and a demon, and he has the upper hand?
The supposedly "immortal" took longer to recover from a knife wound, than she took to fall in love after she was raped by the last male that touched her! Just read that again. Really?
The "empath" that's more a psychopath just didn't work for me. It just didn't make sense. An empath feels emotions BECAUSE she's an emotional being capable of understanding the emotions and recognising it for what it is. A psychopath is quite the opposite! Trying to gel those 2 into one was confusing.
I'll probably read the 2nd book sometime in the future, but most likely not very soon.
I love Laken's 'Rune Alexander' Series....I mean it is some serious next level kind of brutal shit and it's fantastic! This? This was different. Abby is a witch....and I can honestly say that while having some of your typical witchy ways of doing things and accessories to get them done.....there were aspects that were so new and original that I can't wait for the next book to find out more. She sees herself as 'not that powerful of a witch', but you quickly find out that not all things are exactly as they seem with Abby. I haven't really decided yet if she's more than she is admitting to herself.....or more than she's hiding from us. Either way...what little we get to see of her abilities is amazing! She was interesting and exciting and sweet and brave and made me want to learn so much more about her and exactly what she is capable of doing. She's spent the better part of her life in a somewhat self-imposed isolation for reasons that are explained throughout the book and while these reasons are heartbreaking on every level they are also what make everything she accomplishes that much more remarkable. This was a quick and easy read that leaves you wishing the book was at least twice as long. I hear book #2 is in the works now and I can't wait! I don't consider this series YA at all because it has some pretty horrific stuff in it but it's not anywhere on the same level of RAWRRRRR as Rune.....but equally as good and HIGHLY recommended !
Very short. Not very well developed and the two books that are for sale so far, should really be just one book. There are weird gaps too. Like during their first time together sexually, it is barely started and it skips to saying "it is like this everytime we're together"??? We didn't even have a first time!!! There were quite a few mistakes in verbage that ruined the flow for me. Felt rushed. I liked the concept and the sisterly love:) Most of the time was spent in a pocket realm and spooky forest, which was interesting, but I couldn't tell you much about their real world....
What an interesting new world she’s come up with. I find it very intriguing to read about her father, his betrayal, her mother, and the demon witch. I also like how the magic is presented in this world, really interesting to say the least. My only gripe is that it is too short and it seems like some stuff is missing or could be expounded on when it comes to characters, species, and just the world in general. I liked it, I don’t love it yet, but I did like it.
This book was kind of confusing because the world-building was mid, but the vibes were IMPECCABLE. I really liked the concept. The character building was inconsistent- the main fmc was developed really well, but the rest of the characters were a little less in-depth. The slow-burn romance wasn’t even, like, perfect, but somehow it was still REALLY good?
I don’t even know how to feel except I really enjoyed reading lol.
Imagine being cursed as a child, never knowing kindness from people because all they see is a ugly scarred face. That's what Abby goes through until she helps someone and meets the Alpha! Eli can't see her real face but he sees a woman who has hidden all her life. This story was such a good read now off to start book two!!
This first installment of The Waifwater Chronicles was hopefully a taste of a long and prosperous series. The characters were fully fleshed and original. The plot was gripping and kept me enthralled throughout the whole story. I could not put it down!
This turned out to be a grand book I have totally adored. It had a great story line to it and it had me wanting more . I was not sure what I expected when I opend this book but I am so glad i did . Now Im off for book 2.
This book is okay. It has good ideas and an okay plot, but I would rather have seen further development in this book because the second book in the series reads like an afterthought.
This book was terrible. No depth to the characters, the “romance” made no sense. It was a super interesting plot but the execution felt like that of a first time amateur teenage writer. Honestly I got 87% of the way in and couldn’t finish it.
