About the author

Ritwik Ghatak (Bengali: ঋত্বিক কুমার ঘটক) was a Bengali Filmmaker and script writer. Along with prominent contemporary Bengali filmmakers Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, his cinema is primarily remembered for its meticulous depiction of social reality. Although their roles were often adversarial, they were ardent admirers of each other's work and, in doing so, the three directors charted the independent trajectory of parallel cinema, as a counterpoint to the mainstream fare of Hindi cinema in India.

Ghatak received many awards in his career, including National Film Award's Rajat Kamal Award for Best Story in 1974 for his Jukti Takko Aar Gappo and Best Director's Award from Bangladesh Cine Journalist's Association for Titash Ekti Nadir Naam. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for Arts in 1970.

Ghatak was not only a film director, he was a theorist, too. His views and commentaries on films have been parts of scholarly studies and researches. As a filmmaker his main concentration was on men and life and specially the day-to-day struggle of ordinary men. He could never accept the partition of India of 1947 which divided Bengal into two countries. In almost all his film he dealt with this theme.

Filmmaking was not only art for him. In his opinion it was only a means to the end of serving people: It was only a means of expressing his anger at the sorrows and sufferings of his people.

ঋত্বিক ঘটক সম্বন্ধে ব্যক্তি হিসেবে জানি খুব বেশিদিন নয়, বছর দুই হবে... মূলত সিনেমা নিয়ে একটু জানাশোনা করতে গিয়েই ব্যক্তি ঋত্বিক সম্পর্কে জানা। এর আগে আমার কাছে তার অস্তিত্ব বলতে ছিল কেবলই পত্র পত্রিকার বিশেষ কলামগুলোতে তার নামের উল্লেখ। যাহোক, ঋত্বিক ঘটক নামকরা প্রথা ভেঙ্গে দেয়া সিনেমা নির্মাতা হিসেবে হলেও তিনি নিজেকে মূলত দাবি করেছেন একজন সোশিও পলিটিক্যাল একটিভিস্ট হিসেবে। ক'মাস আগে বইয়ের দোকানে তার ছোটগল্পের বইটার উপর চোখ পড়ে যাবার পর বুঝলাম তিনি লিখতেন ও বটে এবং সেটা সংকলিত হবার মত লেখা নিশ্চই। তবু খুব বেশী আশা করে বইটা হাতে নিইনি।

প্রথমে গল্পগুলোর আইডিয়া বা বুদ্ধিবৃত্বিক পরিসর কিংবা গল্পের প্লট এগুলোর সংগে বেশ রিলেট করতে পারছিলাম। বেশ ভিন্ন ধাঁচের- অনেকটা তাজা হাওয়া খাবার অনুভূতির মতই লাগছিলো লেখাগুলো পড়ে। কিন্তু পৃষ্ঠা এগিয়ে যত সামনে যেতে থাকে, অনেক বেশি সিরিয়াস প্লটের গল্পগুলো সামনে এসে পরে চরম অস্বস্তিতে ফেলে দেয়। সেখানে আছে- বঞ্চিত ও মজদুর শ্রেণীর দুখের উপাখ্যান থেকে শুরু করে দেশ ভাগের যন্ত্রণায় অতিষ্ঠ মানুষের গল্প এমনকি কাশ্মিরের আজাদির লড়াই পর্যন্ত। লিখতে লিখতে ঘরের অন্দরমহল থেকে বেরিয়ে পায়ে পায়ে লেখা নিয়ে তিনি গিয়েছেন মজদুরের ঘর মায় রাজনীতির ময়দান পর্যন্ত কিংবা এর উল্টোটা! কি আসে যায় তাতে। গল্পগুলোর চিত্রায়ণ করেছেন এত সুন্দর করে যেন চোখের সামনে এক জীবন্ত গল্পের জগত, যেখানে মনে মনে ঢুকে চিন্তা ভারাক্রান্ত হওয়া যায়, চরিত্রের দুঃখ অনুভব করা যায়, খুন হতে দেখা যায় কিংবা সুন্দর সন্ধ্যা বা চাদনি রাত উপভোগ করা যায় । সাহিত্যিক হিসেবে তাকে আমি অবশ্যই এভারেজ এর উপরে রাখব এই গল্পগুলো পড়েই।

পড়ার জন্য অবশ্যই রেকমেন্ডেড এবং সংগ্রহে রাখবার মত বই।

Old Bengal Nostalgia in one of its finest forms . I have given it 3:stars only because I no longer associate much with the maudlin depiction of filial relationships as is a staple part of Bengali literature , atleast the ones I have read in the likes of Tagore . But people who identify and associate with these emotions will find the stories a treat . The introduction really sums up the book well , so you can decide if the book is for you by leafing through the foresaid . Some stories that really stand out are " Shikha" , " Ecstasy " , " Raja " and " The Deposition " . Old world Bengali literature in one of its finest forms !

সিনেমার মতো লেখনীতেও উজ্জ্বল ঋত্বিক ঘটক। গল্পগুলোতে বারবার ফিরে এসেছে পদ্মার প্রতি লেখকের ভালোবাসা, পরাজিত মানুষের গ্লানি, প্রকৃতির মাঝে শান্তি খুঁজে বেড়ানোর আকুলতা। জীবনকে নিবিড়ভাবে পর্যবেক্ষন করতেন বলেই হয়তো গল্পগুলোয় এতো তীব্র অনুভূতি ফুটে উঠেছে।

মূল বইটাও পড়লাম, ইংরেজী অনুবাদ ও পড়লাম। বহুদিন পর একটা বই একটানা পড়ে শেষ করলাম। গল্পগুলো অসাধারণ। একেবারে জীবন থেকে নেয়া। ৩ টি গল্পে উগ্র বাম মানসিকতা প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। তারপরেও সেগুলো অসাধারণ।

A good starter to know Ritwik Ghatak stories!

I've only heard of Ritwik Ghatak as a prominent Bengali film director but never such an excellent writer. While browsing the book lists, this Kindle edition - Stories by Ritwik Ghatak caught my eye. So, out of curiosity, I started reading this collection of 17 stories translated from Bengali by Rani Ray. Some of these stories are really beautiful and will be in my mind for a long time for sure. The stories included in this edition are:

My favorites are The Tree, The Deposition, A Fairy Tale, Raja, Touchstone, Eyes, and Comrade. All the stories in this collection are about human emotions, misery, and the state of people in the period of Indian independence. It is an excellent starter to learn about Ritwik Kumar Ghatak's writings. But regarding this particular Kindle edition, the editing might have been better. There are a lot of spelling mistakes. But, apart from that, it is a good read.

সিনেমায় যেমন, গলেপ ঋত্বিক ঘটক তেমনই ঋজু। গদ্যে নাই কোনো বাহুল্য, বক্তব্য স্পষ্ট। শুরুর দিকের কয়েকটা লেখাকে 'গল্প' হয়ত বলা যায় না কিন্তু কয়েকটা আবার বেশ গল্প হয়ে উঠেছে। তবে শেষ গল্পটা মজার। 'মার' নামের ছোট এই লেখাটা অর্জুনের সুভদ্রা হরণ থেকে শুরু হয়ে যেভাবে প্রতিবাদের ভাষা হয়ে ওঠে তা ইন্টারেস্টিং।

I found thins book in a little ripped condition at a book shop cum cafe in Udaipur.
In first look I knew that I must read it.
I brought it for 80 Rupees.
I read all the stories from shorter ones to the longer ones.
It became my companion in my travels to office in Metro.
Every story taught me something new about imagination and writing.
I loved the book to the core.
Very good translation as well.
