In the second book of the Mount Emily series, Low takes the reader back into Patsy and Elena's time-travelling adventures, this time, back to 1988 with an important mission that sees Patsy take on a treacherous Midnight Warrior head on. But that's not the only challenge Patsy needs to face. Enters love interest Wuji, and Patsy's already tenuous friendship with bestie Elena that saw them stumbling back into the past in the first place, faces another obstacle as Patsy struggles with her insecurities, loyalty to Elena, and her own raging hormones.

The introduction of teenage crushes and broken marriages up the ante in this brilliant second book of the series, grounding this character-focused fantasy in real-life growing up issues that sets it apart from other YA adventure stories. Low's nuanced portrayal of Patsy and Elena, complete with the seemingly minute-by-minute fluctuating and contrary feelings Patsy, the main focaliser, has towards Elena, gives the relationship the moving authenticity of teenage friendships.

Lastly, already not a series to shy from the brutality of life-and-death scenarios, Patsy and her friends, some of whom are from her mother's time as teenagers, face mortal danger, as the reader turns the pages frantically to find out what happens next, and if anyone in this expanding cast of characters would be the next fatality.

A riveting fantasy adventure series that keeps getting more exciting with each installment. Bring it on, Book 3!

Was curious about how a time travel story could work within a Singapore context!
