Rate this book
Civil war has erupted between two vampire factions. When Baskell Arundia stealthily returns to North America he is prepared to do anything it takes to defeat Serena Longer, First Councilwoman of North America. Vampires should be lords over the human cattle; not hiding in the shadows. Everyone thought Serena followed Goddess Artemis in defending humans. That is until she begins acting strange and then the bodies start to pile up. Is Serena using Pale Blood Magic, an evil magic that drains its victims of blood and power? Sexy Alexis Night Runner, Captain of Artemis’ Warriors and Serena’s lover, is shocked by Serena’s behavior and determined to find the cause of it. Unfortunately, the war with Arundia waits for no one. How can Alexis save a woman who is trying to kill her? But it’s not only Serena’s life at stake; twelve-year-old Ariel Morningstar-Longer, Serena’s blood daughter and heir, is being stalked by her mother. Alexis is torn between defending Ariel and saving Serena. A vampire society unlike any you’ve read about where magic rules the night and turns lovers to enemies.

Born in a rougher section of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, (and there were several of those areas when I was growing up. I hear they’ve cleaned Pittsburgh up very nicely, now. Haven’t been back in many years.) I soon learned how to make myself invisible. If you tend to be on the smaller side, this is a very good talent. As a result, I got to observe people in their myriad of attitudes and emotions.

They fascinated me.

In self-defense against loneliness, I learned to read very early, and to write. My first story was written in pencil on those tablets for little kids with huge spaces between lines. It was a story about a lost dog. Do you ever forget your first?

Ever since that day, I have been creating alternate realities.
Fortunately, my life has been anything except traditional, and therefore, I have never run out of stories to tell.

I lived on the road for several years, was homeless a few times, have worked non-traditional jobs (and a very few traditional jobs), and have walked many dark roads and city streets.

Currently, I live on a 12 acre wildlife/wild bird/indigenous plant habitat that my wife of 25 years and I have created. During a single year, we host over 68 different species of birds, and many different animals.

When I am not either reading or writing, I love to hike, take photographs, work with my dogs, tend the land, horseback ride, travel, learn new things, and recently, I acquired a motorcycle, so I am having a great deal of fun learning to ride.

Whenever I have the opportunity, I also search for the perfect chocolate. There are many good chocolates in the world, but I am convinced that there is a “perfect one”. Have to eat a lot of chocolates while I am researching!

I am always genuinely moved by the depth and breadth of Aya's novels! I love that they not only entertain but also seek to enlighten and empower women. Another plus is that her series of books can be read as stand-alone novels, some authors aren't able to achieve this. With Artemis' Warriors, which I loved, she got me hooked on a new genre of fantasy/romance. Honestly, I've never read fantasy or supernatural books before because I felt I couldn't relate or just couldn't really get into them, but with Aya's very capable writing style, I'm a fan. Sometimes comparisons aren't possible nor even necessary, but in many ways I perhaps loved Arundia Returns even more as the depth of true love continually shines through in this book. True love is usually not without its challenges and they are deeply explored in Arundia Returns. Serena and Alexis each face very complex individual and joint trials in this second installment and we're also introduced to several wonderful new characters. I have to say that the evil doers in Aya's books are just as well developed as the good characters so that makes her writing all the more interesting and enjoyable. Arundia Returns contains many action-packed scenes along with some unexpected plot twists (which I won't dare mention). This series contains very strong female characters as well as male ones and seeing this type of equality is refreshing. As an avid reader, I always admire the lengths that authors go to in conducting research for their work and I can easily understand how one goes about doing research for a crime or medical mystery but I am amazed by the research and expertise Aya displays in her fantasy novels. IMHO, she seems very knowledgeable in this area and that will remain a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, this fantasy series reads just as natural to me as her crime series...so I'm definitely hooked and I'm definitely looking forward to another installment.

Intense

My emotions were all over the place with this book. There was anger, anxiety, happiness, exasperation and a feeling of warmth. I really felt for Serena and Alexis and all they were going through again after what they faced in the first book. Ariel has gained strength and knowledge of which I hope to continue seeing in the coming sequel. I felt angry at times with the behavior of Serena towards her people and her daughter, and this shows how great a storyteller Aya Walksfar is. I recommend this story as well as the Author's other books to those who enjoy a good suspense with a bit of the paranormal thrown in.
