My first ever fan fiction read! And it was an absolute blast!

I love Final Fantasy VII. It's one of my favorite games of all time. My son's name is Cloud, if that gives you any indication of how highly I hold this game in my mind. Revisiting these characters in a new story in an alternate universe had me grinning from ear to ear the whole way through.

A time travel fanfic that has Cloud going back to the events of the Wutai War. So yes, he meets Genesis and Angeal and yes, he gets to interact with Zack and Sephiroth too.

I'm very impressed at Sinnatious's restraint. He could have tried to shoehorn in every single character and try to make cameo's and little blurbs all the way throughout, but he was able to hold back in a way the I think the story completely benefitted from.

Honestly my only complaint is the ending. Now, that's not to say the ending is bad. It's definitely not. It's good in fact. But I also had questions that I felt needed answers. And 1 other problem I had but I don't wanna say that here as it would spoil the whole story I think.

This was such a fun read and I am so glad I read it! It was my first fanfic (of video games, I just remembered that I have read a Harry Potter fanfic, whoops) and I am definitely going to be reading more! So much fun to have excuses to dive back into worlds I know I already love. Inspirational in a way to write one of my own someday as well.

If you like Final Fantasy VII definitely give this a shot!

Reread this again during Easter break, and unlike most books, where on rereading, my rating usually drops, the Fifth Act keeps its 5 stars. I'd give it a bonus star for characterisation, if I could. I 've been following Sinnatious for some years, and her grasp of the characterisation of everyone is always what keeps me coming back. She (I think they' re a 'she') always manages to portray everyone so realistically, that sometimes her characteristation sticks over what is supposed to be canon. She absolutely ruined Ogata Seiji from Hikaru no Go for me, with that fic of hers called "Caught in a ladder", but it was so damned good, I probably read it four times before I was done with it. Similarly, in the Fifth Act, according to their portrayals in all the available media, I came in feeling leery of Sephiroth and Genesis, while I was sympathetic towards Cloud and Angeal, then Sinnatious happened, and I ended up relating to Sephiroth, and very much liking Genesis. And Angeal was... Well, I'll never be able to look at him the same again, that much is certain. Seriously, if Sinnatious ever decided to start writing original fiction, I'd probably buy all her books just on principle, because even if the subject doesn't appeal to me, she'd be able to draw me in with the vivid characters.

This is one of the most famous of the Final Fantasy VII Time Travel fanfics -- which is a bit ironic, considering that it turns most of the subgenre's tropes on their heads. For one thing, Cloud is determined to kill Sephiroth, not save him; for another, it's gen (except for Zack/Aerith, of course). The plot is brilliantly put together -- enough to make it definitely worth a reread -- and the additions to and speculations regarding canon fit perfectly. Most importantly, the characters all act and sound like themselves.

Lunchy_munchy's podfic is a really excellent example of the genre. In addition to reading Sinnatious' words clearly, accurately, and with distinct voices, Lunchy added extremely appropriate music cues from the original game soundtrack. It's a joy to listen to.
