NLD: From the Inside Out: Talking to Parents, Teachers and Teens about Growing Up with Nonverbal Learning Disabilities by Michael Brian Murphy
NLD from the Inside Out, a new book (out last month) is a comprehensive guide to NonVerbal Learning Disabilities. Michael Brian Murphy completed his doctoral thesis in this area and then from that was able to put all the information and more into this book. The book contains actual letters and notes from people with NLD. As well as chapters that are highly technical with descriptions of the brain and how each portion works in conjunction with other parts of the brain. I found the technical aspects fascinating and took copious notes.
The book is not one to just sit and read. There are wonderful checklist, ideas of books to read and practical advice. Michael Brian Murphy’s book is going to be an important book to further knowledge in the area of NonVerbal Learning Disabilities.
This is well-written and well-organized. It is oriented more toward describing NLD in children and teens and proferring suggestions on how to help them. Alas therefore it didn't really speak to me. At 54 and having been Dxed only 5 yrs. ago, someone in my shoes I thinks needs different kinds of advice or suggestions. But that doesn't make it a bad book! Overall it was worth it to buy/read. Ppl who know ppl with NLD would also benefit from reading this book.
Glad my daughter saved this book in PDF for me to read. An eye opener! I never realized the number of issues affecting daily life for someone with NLD. It causes me to be in awe of her!
I would suggest this be read by all....especially teachers, children struggling, and parents of those children.
This was a book that is insightful in many ways. I have printed charts, taken notes, started changing my sentence structures, and overall agreed with almost everything written.!
Wish I would have had this in my hands many years ago. Son is a NLDer and brings so much in insight and has helped him to realize he is not alone and understand why he is the way he is! Thank you ever so much!!!
