There are thirty-three million stories on referendum night. This one has the highest body count.
Dave Fenton sleeps by day and drives a taxi by night. As the counting commences in the most important vote in Britain's history, one passenger leaves something in his cab. Something secret. Something explosive. Something so dangerous there are people who will stop at nothing to get it back.
From Downing Street to the East End via the City and a whole bit of the country that isn't London at all, BREXECUTION is a fictionalised account of the closing days of June 2016. Politicians, bankers, cabbies and crooks - some will win, some will lose - and some won't make it past the first day of Brexit.
From Joel Hames, author of international bestseller The Art of Staying Dead, comes a thriller you’ll want to put your cross on.
Please note that BREXECUTION is a novella, not a full length novel. 50 per cent of the profits from this book will be distributed to charities fighting hate crime in the UK.
This topical short story tells the tale of the unprecedented referendum vote and adds some fictional spice to the result which probably astonished us all when it happened. Dave is a taxi driver working nights. Someone leaves a briefcase in his cab and an unsuspecting banker finds it. He reads the contents, leaves it there and later, Dave himself reads it. The contents are explosive. There have been cunning plans and dirty deeds (we all knew that!), the banker dies and Dave finds himself in great danger.
This is a bit of fun (well, assuming you like murder and political intrigue). They say a week is a long time in politics, and life imitates art. Current events are catching up with, and even overtaking, this story – but take it in its context. It’s a funny, slightly scary and bravely ambitious book. I enjoyed it very much.
What an excellent and very topical thriller novella - it's so well written and constructed that it's hard to believe it was written in the couple of weeks following the EU referendum. Joel Hames is an expert at portraying political and business skulduggery at its worst and the plot line of Brexecution was horribly plausible. What's been in the headlines over the last few weeks could well be the tip of the iceberg and we'd never know.... Hames paints his characters with broad brushstrokes, so they seem real and we are able to empathise with or hate them as appropriate - quite a feat in a short novella! And of course, the hallmark Hames humour is ever present. Best of all, my fave lawyer Sam Williams gets in on the action! All in all a gripping read and highly recommended.
This was a jolly good few hours' read! Brexecution is a fast moving thriller set during the few days following the results of the EU referendum. At the heart of it are a corrupt banker or two, a high level politician, sadistic thug, a London cab driver and a girl in a Marilyn Monroe wig. It's amazingly well written considering how quickly it was (br)executed, but then Joel Hames has intelligent thriller-writing talent in spades, and not without a little humour.
Some of the events unfold a little over-smoothly, but that's what stories like these are made of, after all; some of the most outlandish secrets are frighteningly possible, even likely, suggesting that there is a lot more (and a lot darker) stuff involved in the governing of this country than is known to the common man. The plot fits perfectly into the novella format, which is an art in itself.
A few writers may leap on the referendum bandwagon to produce a highly topical novel, in weeks to come, but once you've read this you'll applaud Mr Hames for being in the driving seat. It's great. Buy it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novella from the moment I picked it up and found it very hard to put down. A mystery briefcase hidden in the back of a taxi is the catalyst behind a chain of events which leaves one victim suspended from a crane over London and another two running for their lives. Whether you agree with any conspiracy theory behind the EU referendum or not, this is a fast paced, extremely well-written story with an authentic cast of characters. I thought it was great!
I saw that this book was released shortly after Brexit and was interested enough to pick it up. I started reading this little book a few days ago and have been hooked all the way through. The plot is clever, the pacing brilliant. I was taken straight into the story and gripped the whole way through. An unlikely hero, a middle-aged taxi driver who is thrown into a world so dark and shady because one of his passengers left a briefcase in his cab. I didn’t know where this story would go and I loved every minute of it. I am already planning to pick up more by this author.
I don't normally write reviews for books, but this is different, because it's just so stunningly good. Nor do I normally buy short stories ("novellas"), but I bought this on the basis of all the 5* reviews on here. Totally justified. Hugely recommended. I tried not to read it in one go, but then couldn't sleep at night, because it's so powerful, I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Joel Hames has quickly made a name for writing nail-biting thrillers. This novella is no different, and it puts a new spin on a contentious topic.
As always, the reader is plunged directly into the action, and the world is turned upside down from the first page. Not coming from a banking or financial background, I thoroughly enjoy the foray into a world so foreign to me.
Brexecution provides a good dose of crime, political gain, and mystery. It has a steady pace and does not disappoint.
It is exactly four weeks since the European Referendum and plenty of other important World events and disasters have occurred since then, but the shock of the result is still with many of us. Life is stranger than fiction, never truer than in the past few weeks. What made the days either side of our referendum so horribly fascinating was the fact that political parties were split, old allies stabbed each other in the back and the public lost what little faith they still had in politicians. Exciting times for writers and well done to Joel Hames for writing and publishing this novella in 'the moment'. We are lulled into the first chapter, but soon comes a shock... The book must have been quite a challenge; giving the leading characters different names, sometimes changing their sex. It's still an enjoyable thriller, even if you have no idea who the 'names' are in real life. If you do follow politics closely you will enjoy the black humour. I would like to read the author's full length novels.
A very different novel but very enjoyable. Amazing that it was written and published in a week. It tackled a serious subject but there were some very funny moments. A certain book club might recognise some of the characters!
I look forward to reading more of Joel Hames's books.
An interesting take on recent events, written in the two weeks since the referendum. A fast-paced mini-thriller which starts when a briefcase is found in the back of a taxi, and the owners want it back by any means. I now want to find out more about Sam Williams Definitely worth a read!
Excellent little thriller novella brought out just as the country was still reeling from the British vote to leave Europe, in which days it is set. Was there more to the shock result than meets the eye? A man is dead and taxi driver Dave is running for his life.
