About the author

Johannes Mario Simmel was an Austrian writer.

He was born in Vienna and grew up in Austria and England. He was trained as a chemical engineer and worked in research from 1943 to the end of World War II. After the end of the war, he worked as a translator for the American military government and published reviews and stories in the Vienna Welt am Abend. Starting in 1950, he worked as a reporter for the Munich illustrated Quick in Europe and America.

He wrote a number of screenplays and novels, which have sold tens of millions of copies. Many of his novels were successfully filmed in the 1960s and 1970s. He won numerous prizes, including the Award of Excellence of the Society of Writers of the UN. Important issues in his novels are a fervent pacifism as well as the relativity of good and bad. Several novels are said to have a true background, possibly autobiographic.

According to his Swiss lawyer, Simmel died on January 1, 2009 in Lucerne, at 84 years of age.

"Wait for me. I shall not fail to meet thee in the shadow vale."

I fell in love with this book when I read it for the first time 15 years ago and since then, I recommended it to everyone as my favorite book of all time! Now I did a reread of it to see if I still loved it so.

Let's begin with saying that this story feels like a vague retelling of Romeo and Julliet, and from the very first chapter we know this story of forbidden love will not have a happy ending.

It is a love story between a 21-year-old Oliver who is in college and 33-year-old Verena, who has a child and is married to an older, rich man she doesn't love. To be honest, this time around, I didn't see the chemistry between Oliver and Verena throughout the first half of the book. As an adult, I wasn't able to appreciate how easy it came for them and how hard they fell for each other. However, I remember loving their story when I was 15 or so, wishing I would experience such love one day too.

This story digs deep into all kinds of things that are wrong with society, how people with mental issues and traumatic past can go crazy and cause loads of trouble for others. How no mather how good a person you are, there will always be people who have issues with your behaviour. Also, this book is set in post nazi Germany in years 1962-1964 and we see how kids in high school were directly or indirectly influenced and shaped by actions of their parents in the WWII.

Even though I wasn't convinced by the love between Oliver and Verena throughout the first half of the book, the second half was really beautiful and even though I knew how it had to end, I was rooting for them and hoping they'd be happy together. One part of the story in particular was so breathtaking, I ended up daydreaming about it.

What makes this book amazing though are probably the last 100 pages. It is so captivating and heartbreaking at the same time, it takes a while to get over it.

All in all, this is a strange book and you should be aware it was written in 1962, some things could be considered somewhat problematic. However, if you decide to read this, I urge you to try to get over those little things and enjoy the story, which hits deep for so many reasons.

Láska někdy nestačí. To si teď myslím, když jsem podruhé v životě dočetl tu knihu, která mi ze začátku připadala jako nicnedávající kýč a na konci mi sebrala dech. Proč to tak je? Protože jsme slabí, zbabělí, neodhodlaní; protože jistota je nám nade vše; protože tolik toužíme po lásce, ale nakonec jí nedokážeme obětovat vše, co si žádá a co je pro ni potřebné, protože máme strach a tušíme, že jednou či později skončí; protože nevěříme, že navždy je možné; protože sami čekáme od druhého více, než může nabídnout, a ten smyšlený nedostatek pak použijeme jako svoji vnitřní výmluvu a zdůvodnění; protože nás dříve nebo později napadne, že je to jen poblouznění, chvilkové zmámení, pár šťastných momentů, které nemají s reálným životem nic společného; protože jsme zaprodanci kompromisů jistoty; protože jsme ztratili víru; protože jsme přestali snít. Je to krásná kniha. Lehce se čte, někdy působí i jednoduše, ale její příběh je pravdivý. Silný, omamný a zraňující. Někdy to tak je – že láska je jen slovo...

Na to neodpovídá, dlouho mlčí, až konečně řekne. „Hrozné! Z ničeho nemám větší strach.“

„Než z lásky. Než ze skutečné lásky.“

„Protože všechny mé skutečné lásky skončily hrozně. Začínaly nádherně a skončily hrozně. Už nechci žádnou novou lásku! Už toho mám dost!“

Co je láska? Láska je neznámá země. Žádný člověk není tak ubohý, aby nezažil tento pocit. Je velmi mnoho druhů lásek. Jen málo jich činí člověka šťastným. Ale to zřejmě taky není jejich smyslem.

Láska je jen slovo je velice čtivou knihou. Přestože má stránek 600, tak jsem ji přečetla hned.
Ústředním příběhem je tragická láska, ale román má i okamžiky soustřeďující se na život na intru nebo poválečné Západní Německo.

Tuto knihu jsem četla opravdu jedním dechem. Příběh mě zcela vtáhl do děje a chvílemi jsem si připadala, že jsem tam s nimi, že jsem svědkem jejich "zakázané" lásky, jež je doprovázena nástrahami, trápením a nakonec i smrtí. I přes smutný konec stojí za to si tuto knihu přečíst a něco si z ní vzít a přiznat si, že ne všechno v životě končí dobře.

Jedna z mých nejdražších knih vůbec. Četla jsem ji hodně mladá, spíš malá. Těžko bych popisovala, co všechno mi dala, jak dlouho jsem o postavách a příběhu přemýšlela. Vrátila jsem se na rereading po několika letech pro oživení. Nejraději bych ji všem doporučila a zároveň si ji nechala jen pro sebe.

Proč mi nikdo nikdy neřekl, že má toto dílo velmi nevšední formální strukturu? Zabývá se milostným vztahem mezi Oliverem a starší, vdanou Verenou. Oliver jejich vztah sepsal do románu s názvem Láska je jen slovo, takže je to on, kdo je jeho vypravěč. Jenže v prologu (který vypráví jiný vypravěč) se dozvíte, že Oliver byl zavražděn (reálně se to dozvíte tak na druhé straně, takže to není spoiler). Epilog vám zase vysvětlí zbývající díry v příběhu. No a co se stalo mezitím? To si musíte přečíst v Oliverově románu... Formou je to nesmírně hravé, navíc vám Oliver stále naznačuje, co se bude dít za chvíli, takže nemůžete přestat číst. I přesto je začátek knihy trochu pomalejší, trvá, než se seznámíte s prostředím a postavami. Bohužel musím říct, že je v tomto díle příliš mnoho náhod a také jen samé zlé postavy, které s Oliverem měly špatné úmysly. Mnoho motivů postav mimo ústřední dvojici bylo popravdě trochu nelogických. Proto se mi to celé jevilo dost nereálné a záměrně přitažené za vlasy, ačkoliv samotný vztah O. a V. realistický byl, a to včetně jeho vyústění.

Túto knihu som čítal v rámci knižného klubu, a aj keď je dosť odlišná od kníh, čo čítam zvyčajne, som rád, že som si ju mohol prečítať.

V prvom rade je to asi milostný príbeh, ktorý nie je napísaný zle a bolo to zaujímavé sledovať, ale nevedel som sa úplne stotožniť s motiváciami jednotlivých postáv. Akože dáva mi zmysel čo robili a aj tomu rozumiem, ale stále mi ich správanie nesedelo. Ale aspoň sme sa mali o čom rozprávať na klube.

Čo ale bolo super, boli opisy života na internáte s veľa rôznymi drobnými postavami. Takmer všetky si prechádzali rôznymi traumami a bolesťami. Od nenaplnenej lásky, cez týranie matkou po spracovávanie nacistickej minulosti Nemecka. Celkovo toto bol silný podmotív celej knihy, ako sa Nemecko a Nemci vyrovnáva v 50tych rokoch so svojím angažovaním v Nemecku a bolo to veľmi zaujímavé.

Silný příběh, mimo jiné i proto, že je od začátku jasné, že dopadne špatně. Kniha začíná koncem, takže ani čtenáři, kteří si čtou normálně nejdřív konec, nejsou v žádné výhodě, knížku není potřeba číst proto, aby se člověk dozvěděl, jak to dopadlo, ale čistě jen proto, aby znal celý příběh.
Už jsem četla víc než jen pár knih na téma lásky starší ženy a mladšího muže, tato mi trochu připomněla mou oblíbenou v této škatulce - Cizoložství. A musím proto hodnotit stejně - plným počtem hvězd. A stejně tak jako Cizoložství - doporučuji.

One of my most popular books. The only book I read at least 4 or 5 times. And I know that I will read this book again in the future. If you can fall in love with a book, then I did fall in love with it.

I've read all books from Johannes Mario Simmel and despite all his books are based on the same scheme (in this case it's a little bit different), I always liked the social theme which was in his books.

Normalerweise hätte ich dieses Buch nach ca. ⅓ abgebrochen. Warum habe ich es nicht getan? Weil aus diesem Buch mein Vorname stammt. Ein weiteres Detail, was mir gefällt: Verena ist in diesem Buch 33 Jahre alt. Ich lese es mit 33. Full circle ⭕

Nun zum Inhalt:

Die Charaktere sind so extrem überzeichnet, dadurch wirken sie sehr unauthentisch.
Keiner der Charaktere ist sympathisch, manche sind einfach nur ungute Zeitgenossen.
Der Hauptcharakter + Erzähler Oliver ist einfach nur langweilig, ein verwöhnter Schnösel, der sich ununterbrochen in die Scheiße reitet.
Er sieht Verena mit einem anderen knutschen und ist sofort in sie verliebt. Er sagt ihr das auch gleich und ich, als hetero-cis-Frau frage mich, weshalb sie ihn überhaupt weiterhin trifft, so aufdringlich wie er ist. Bis weit über die Hälfte des Buches knistert es zwischen den Zweien gar nicht. Dann ist es auf einmal auch für sie die große Liebe... Auch die Szenen in denen sie sich "lieben" sind eher langweilig. Man sieht hier einfach, das dieses Buch Ende der 1950er/Anfang der 1960er entstand, geschrieben von einem cis-Mann im Kontext seiner Zeit. Auch viele jetzt veraltete Ansichten (eine Frau braucht einen Mann, Herabwürdigung von Sexarbeitenden...) die heute, zum Glück!, als respektlos und lange überkommen gelten, kommen vor.

Toxische Menschen + Beziehungen wo man hinblickt. Teilweise möchte man sie schütteln und anschreien und fragen, warum sie so dumm sind.

Verena ist eine furchtbare Person + Mutter. Ihr Kind ist 4 Jahre alt, verhält sich aber nicht altersgerecht, eher als wäre sie schon viiiel älter. Die Erklärung, dass sie sehr intelligent ist, ist wenig glaubhaft. Die Art und Weise wie sie sich verhält ist nicht nur ihrem Mann, sondern vor allem ihrem Kind gegenüber rücksichtslos. Was sie denkt, sagt und tut steht im direkten Widerspruch zueinander.
Sie betrügt ihren Mann (mehrmals), hat Angst, dass er sie erwischt und sie dann "ins Elend zurück stößt", aus dem sie kam. Auch als die Ex von Oliver bei ihrem Mann im Büro auftaucht, ihm von der Affäre erzählt und der es wiederum Verena und Oliver auf die Nase bindet, trifft sie sich weiterhin mit Oliver. Obwohl dem Leser spätestens jetzt klar ist, dass ihr Mann es weiß - höchst wahrscheinlich die ganze Zeit schon. Sie wollen es nicht wahrhaben, obwohl sie sich beobachtet fühlen, es "Gerede" gibt. Nein, sie treffen sich sogar auf Elba. Diese unnötige Dramatisierung finde ich sehr anstrengend.
Das für mich persönlich am verwirrendste war, dass ich den Charakter des Bankier Lord am annehmbarsten fand (wie gesagt, sympathisch war keiner). Obwohl er so offensichtlich ein schmieriger Typ, verwickelt in krumme Geschäfte (auch in der NS-Zeit), war, war er doch der authentischste und realistischere Charakter. Als mächtiger Mann hat er alles unter Kontrolle und weiß alles. Typischer alter, weißer Mann mit Trophy Wife.

Der einzig annähernd interessante Handlungsstrang ist, wie die Kinder im Internat mit der (teilweise) NS-Vergangenheit ihrer Eltern umgehen. Dies wird aber nur oberflächlich gestreift und meiner Meinung nach lohnt es sich nicht, das Buch deshalb zu lesen.
Generell frage ich mich, warum diese Themen (NS-Eltern und allgemeine Internatsgeschichten) da reingeworfen wurden, da es mit der Haupthandlung, der Liebesgeschichte, wenig zu tun hat.

Ein paar kleine Pluspunkte gibt es schon:
+ Es gibt ein paar überraschende, aufrüttelnde Wendungen.
+ Die Liebe, wie sie im zweiten Teil des Buches beschrieben wird, ist wunderschön und herzerwärmend.

Zum Schreibstil Simmels kann ich wenig sagen, da es das erste Buch ist, welches ich von ihm gelesen hab - und womöglich auch mein Letztes, meine Begeisterung hält sich in Grenzen.
Simmel nutzt den Kunstgriff, die Hauptperson erzählen zu lassen. Oliver schreibt einen Roman über sein Leben. Dadurch unterscheidet sich der Stil von Prolog + Epilog vom Großteil des Buches.

Alles in allem weiß ich nicht recht, was ich von dem Buch halten soll. Es enthält eine tragische Liebesgeschichte und der Fazit ist, die mächtigen Reichen gewinnen immer? Die Intention des Autors ist mir absolut unklar. Verwirrend. Aufwühlend. Immerhin hat es mich etwas gepackt, wenn auch nicht zufrieden gestellt.

Táto kniha! Nielenže ju čítala ešte kedysi dávno moja mamina (čo je jedna z mála kníh, ktoré máme prečítané obe), celý príbeh bol tak akurát. Tak akurát hlboký, tak akurát ozajstný a tak akurát dlhý, ako som potrebovala. A keďže príbeh lásky medzi Oliverom a Verenou čítala moja mamina v 16tich, čo je pred viac ako 30. rokmi a zasiahol ju podobne, ako zasiahol pre pár mesiacmi mňa, neostáva mi nič iné iba súhlasiť so všetkými, ktorí velebia jeho nadčasovosť.

Červená knihovna pro čtenáře, kteří mají pocit, že červená knihovna je běžně "pod jejich úroveň", ale zároveň prahnou po troše té romantiky. Autor umí popsat lásku jemně a bez explicitních výrazů. Zároveň pro českého čtenáře je zajímavé vidět situaci 60. let v poválečném Německu - alespoň pro mne to bylo neotřelé a zajímavé prostředí.

I could write an essay why I hated this novel. But I'll restrain myself to the general points. First of all, it's just not the first time that I read a book where the woman screws up the man. I'm already sick of that, plus women in this novel are shown as either whores, weak, sadist or a combination of those. They are best when they are old teachers or nuns.
I guess that this is only one expression of the viewpoint in the age of the author. The other one is how the world is moved by the bad guys. And yes, the characters in this book WERE good or bad, no matter their background etc. - there was no way to feel sympathy towards Hansi, Geraldine or Manfred Lord. On the other side, Wolfgang, Noah, the school director were just totally positive characters. One could argue that was the perspective of the storyteller, but this doesn't change the message anyway. There are good and bad people and the bad are strong and manage to get what they want. The weak, the dreamers kill themselves.
The only more interesting character was maybe Verena, and it wouldn't make me so angry if she just had been too weak to stay with Oliver. But not if you put it in the general concept of feminine stupidity which this novel promotes.
I don't support happy endings at all means, but come on. Life is better than that.

PS: The parts about the post-war generation criticizing their parents were something that I found interesting and are the only good thing in this book, in my opinion.

Авторът е непознат за мен и очаквах от книгата да не ми допадне, понеже е драматична история, а тях чета трудно. Но още с първите редове ме впечатли. Силно начало и силен край, които ме оставиха без думи и се улавям, че все още размислям върху книгата. Опитвам се да преценя героите и случките и да ги разбера.
Накратко авторът взима един банален сюжет, като изневярата, и го превръща в нещо интересно, и в същото време напрегнато. Зад всеки ред очакваш, че може да се случи някое нещастие. Героят е 21 годишен объркан млад мъж, без подкрепа от родителите си и без приятели. Влюбва се в омъжена жена с дете на 33 години. От там нататък съдбата ми е предопределена, а около тях се сгъстяват сенките на злото, което води до драматичния край. Не си мислете, че издадох книгата. Още в началото се знае какъв ще е краят. Този похват на автора е много интригуващ и ще ви държи в напрежение.
Освен любовната история, в книгата са описани и настроенията на германците след Втората световна война и по-точно на младото поколение, което се противопоставя на родителите си, участвали във войната.

Celkem zajímavý příběh, ale přijde mi, že kniha je psaná trochu těžkopádně a zápletka mi přijde až moc překombinovaná (tohle by se určitě nemohlo stát tak složitě - hlavního hrdinu kvůli jeho vztahu s vdanou ženou vydírají dva, potažmo tři lidé, k tomu má problémy se svojí bývalou "přítelkyní" a "bratrem". Na druhou stranu je to zajímavý náhled na osudy lidí a především dětí v poválečném Německu, i když jen okrajově.

Read this when I was 12 years old. It was my first "adult" book, and I have to admit I enjoyed reading it in spite of barely understanding most of what was going on between Verena and Oliver and the other grown-ups. My parents had subscribed to a boring mainstream trash book club in the 1960's, and this book ended up on my mum's pile when they got divorced. I suppose I was grossed out, yet strangely fascinated by this book. I recall listening to 'Madness' while reading it... ;-)

Jedna z těch knížek kterou prostě nemůžete přestat číst. I když mi vadila hlavní hrdinka, více než ona mi však vadil samotný závěr knihy, který na mě působí hrozně odfláknutým dojmem. právě proto "jen" čtyři hvězdičky.
