The Marriage Agreement

Proposing a marriage of convenience to a rugged logger is the boldest move of Nora Underhill's sheltered life. In return for Simon Wallin's protection from her overbearing family, the unassuming seamstress offers prime frontier farmland. But their paper marriage changes when Nora's greedy brother tries to draw her back into a life of drudgery. Her only option: move to Simon's farm, and into the center of his loving, unruly family.

Years of shouldering responsibility have left Simon cynical and reserved. But little by little, Nora's warmth opens his shuttered heart to joy. With their marriage claim under threat, can this practical arrangement blossom over the holidays…and become a love for all seasons?

This is the fifth book in the Frontier Bachelor series, but stands very well on its own. I haven’t read the other books yet (planning to), but jumped to this one since I’m reading Christmas books right now.

I thought this was a sweet story. I really liked Nora, I thought she was an interesting character. I love how she turns Simon’s life upside down. He can be a bit of a fuddy-duddy, but she brings out a better side to him. I’m always a sucker for a good marriage of convenience story and thought it was well done here. There are some really sweet moments and fun interactions between the characters. I liked the Christmas elements, and cozy setting. Overall, a fun read!

Content: Clean, mild kissing, no language or violence. Moderate religious elements.

I adore a well-written marriage of convenience story, and this one did not disappoint! What made it so interesting was that both Simon and Nora had no expectations to marry or find love- him because of his blunt personality and her because of her verbally abusive relatives. They are both up front and open about their bargain, but naturally Simon harbors protective feelings towards Nora that develop into something more. He is a hero in Nora's eyes because he treats her with respect, and it was heart-warming to see their attraction and romance blossom. Simon's siblings and family are an important part of the story as they demonstrate unconditional familial love and give her hope for the same in her own life. A sweet holiday romance that's perfect for the season! I've read one of the other books in the series and loved it as well, I'm looking forward to reading the rest!

(4.5 Stars) I love the Love Inspired Historical line because I know that I'll be getting an enjoyable story full of sweet romance, uplifting and inspirational characters, and clean content. I got exactly what I was expecting...and more!

Nora only wants to be loved and appreciated. Born to older parents and left in the care of a needy brother and sister-in-law when they died, she's never felt free to spread her wings. After moving to Seattle, she comes up with a brilliant plan--if she's married and has someone to protect her from her family, then she'll be free to explore her interests and opportunities. Choosing Simon as her lucky groom, they strike a bargain and a marriage of convenience begins.

I love Nora! I've been trying to be more grateful and positive lately and I love how she can make the best of any situation, finding the good in all. Simon is a little more reserved, but the wall of ice around his heart can't withstand Nora's cheer. He quickly learns to adapt to the unexpectedness of his new life. And can I just say that I adore Simon's family?

I haven't read the other books in this series, but this one can definitely stand alone. I've always wondered if I was the bride in this type of marriage, if I could find love. Watching sweet, hard-working, gentle characters make their ways in life, find satisfaction and happiness, and even love, is so heartening. This book is like drinking a mug of thick, chocolatey hot chocolate on a cold winter's day--it'll warm your insides, melt your heart, and leave you with a contented feeling.

Content: mild-moderate religious elements; very mild romance.

Ok, confession time, I'm not a big romance reader. I tend to be a bit too cynical to believe in HEAs that end up in a neat little bow. Add Christmas to the mix and you tend to get schmaltz added on top of the already gag-inducing love story.

This book, refreshingly, was not saccharine with either the love story or the Christmas theme.

The characters were pretty great, I want to be a part of the family of the H. They are so full of love for one another, but they aren't perfect. The h's family was more one-dimensional and you DEFINITELY wouldn't want them as family, but it worked for the story.

The setting was GREAT. It takes place during the settling of Washington. The h is one of the women who travels to Seattle as part of a group of potential brides for the loggers who are there. The historical part of it seemed real enough to me, though I am not a scholar of that time period or location. It was Christmas time, so it was appropriately cold to me. The worries about enough feed for the animals and clearing land to be able to farm were realistic to me.

My favorite scene was when the students were putting on the play of the Nativity in the barn. Just the way it was described was so beautiful. Not over the top at all.

Four solid stars. I would recommend this as a good Christmas time read. It's a Christian-based book/author and imprint, so nothing more than kissing in it, no violence and no bad language. I would say this would be appropriate for an advanced middle reader on up to adults.

My thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin (US & Canada) Love Inspired for an eARC copy of this book to read and review.

This is a feel good book that is perfect for the holidays.

Nora is a wonderful character. She has great intentions and acts using her heart, sometimes before she thinks things through. She has a need for a protector and finds the perfect one, Simon. She needs someone to help her stay strong and remain away from her controlling brother and his wife. She needs to have a valid reason to stay out of their household and marriage is the perfect solution. Simon doesn't seem to want or need a wife, but she knows he desperately wants land to help ease his families burden, something that she can provide.

While this book starts out as a marriage of convenience, it doesn't take long for the reader to see that they are perfect for each other and it needs to become a romantic relationship. I loved how they seem to find mishap after mishap that throws them into situations where they learn to trust each other and develop affection. Simon has a fun family that wants for him and Nora to find love and happiness together. I loved his family! His brothers and younger sister are matchmakers and take every opportunity to put try to spark a flame between them.

This book is set during the Christmas season in December 1866, It is in Seattle which was part of the American Frontier. I loved the values. This book has Christian thoughts and ideals. The sense of family and community was wonderful.

There is a little bit of a crisis at the end which had me turning the pages to see how it would turn out. This is a clean romance!

This was such a sweet, gentle romance novel. It was filled with charming characters and scenes that warmed my heart. This is the the fifth novel in this series but it can easily stand alone. I haven't read any of the previous books but I see that a couple of them involve people from the same family as this one. I'm interested in reading those because their stories were alluded to in this book. They sound good!

Nora is a gentle and kind soul. She has been repressed and demeaned for most of her life and is determined to do whatever it takes to remove herself from under her brother's thumb. Her proposal for marriage comes as quite a shock to Simon but he quickly sees the marriage of convenience as an opportunity to take care of his growing family. I really loved Nora and her happy outlook on life. She doesn't let the pain of the past interfere with the joys of today. She looks for the good and she is the good. Simon is a good man who works hard and cares so much for his family. He shoulders a lot of responsibility. His serious nature was endearing and I love how Nora's joy seeps into the cracks of his heart.

This was such a charming story. With the Christmas season fast approaching, this book is perfect to snuggle in with and feel that holiday spirit.

What a wonderful story! This is the fifth book in the Frontier Bachelors series and I have enjoyed each novel. Yet, I think this is my very favorite so far! I love the situation of a marriage of convenience and the logical way Simon and Nora entered into their arrangement. It set the stage for a romance to blossom between these two characters whom I liked so much.

I liked the way Nora’s presence as his wife lifted Simon up to enjoy life. She learned to love Simon for who he was, but she did impact him and he learned to see life in a less cynical manner.

I also enjoyed seeing Nora grow and become more confident in herself once she spent time with Simon and his family. She had previously lived her life feeling unimportant and unloved. Her life with the Wallins was a big improvement from her past.

Once again, it was great to return to this family and the rugged setting of Washington state. If you haven’t read the other books in the series, I would recommend it, but I do believe that this story could be enjoyed on its own, too.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Nora has been completely smothered and used by her brother, since her father's death. When she learns that he's moving to join her, she comes up with a crazy idea. She'll propose marriage to Simon, a man desperately in need of more property. He will gain her rights to property, and she will be finally free of her domineering brother. Simon is, at first, shocked. But the need for more land for his ever growing family wins out. Now Nora and Simon must learn how to navigate this supposed marriage of convenience.

This was such a fun, romantic story. I love historical fiction and the author did a great job of weaving history into the plot while still keeping it full of Christmas romance. The other characters in the story were rich and added to the two main characters. It made me want to read more to see if I would be able to meet them again. The author did a great job of addressing the issues the main characters had with their faith and the importance of family, especially during the holidays. Overall, this was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed and I look forward to reading more.

I received this book free of charge from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Regina Scott has written a cute and sweet holiday romance in her fifth book in the Frontier Bachelors Series, A Convenient Christmas Wedding. This story is about Nora Underhill and Simon Wallin. Nora proposes a marriage of convenience to Simon and he accepts. But little do they know that as hard as they try to keep their ends of the “bargain,” that love has a way of finding you in the most and unexpected ways. Scott’s characters come to life in this beautifully written and entertaining story. I would recommend this novel to readers that have enjoyed Scott’s previous work, as well as those that want a little historical holiday romance.

A Convenient Christmas Wedding is the fifth book in Regina Scott's Frontier Bachelors series. I've read the previous books and enjoyed them, so I was looking forward to continuing the series.

The story started off wonderfully. I was immediately drawn into the storyline and loved the characters. I liked the way the marriage of convenience happened and enjoyed seeing their relationship grow.

All in all, A Convenient Christmas Wedding was a wonderful read and I recommend it. I don't think you need to read the previous books in order to enjoy this one. I can hardly wait to read the next book ! :)

Christmas is often an incredibly busy time of year, and I don’t always get to read as much as I would like, even of Christmas books! That’s why I was delighted to receive A Convenient Christmas wedding before the hustle and bustle of the season really begins to kick in. Now I find I am in a joyful frame of mind as I undertake the tasks and fun that prepare our hearts and home for celebrating Jesus’ birth.

This latest installment of Frontier Bachelors finds us revisiting Wallin Landing and the family that is creating the town little by little. This novel belongs to Simon, the infinitely practical and sometimes infuriating Wallin brother. I really enjoyed getting to know his personality and found I could relate to him, sometimes better than to his bride, Nora, an always cheerful and giving woman who marries Simon in a desperate attempt to escape a horrible family situation.

I love that we get a lot of historical detail, especially of Christmas traditions. I enjoy learning how Christmas was celebrated historically, about the Yule Log tradition and the kissing bough; the differences between the latter and mistletoe is interesting, but the scene it lends itself to is both touching and romantic, one of the best parts of the story, in my opinion.

The romance between the couple who marries for convenience, not expecting love but merely a business arrangement of sorts, is a sweet one that takes its time, relatively speaking. The love develops over the whole of the novel, though the time frame it encompasses is not very long. It does seem natural and endearing, however; I never feel as if the author tries too hard to make sparks ignite between the characters, it just happens because it occurs naturally between the two people involved. Simon and Nora each learn what it means to give—and receive—love over the course of the story.

With her trademark humor and spot on historical detail, Regina Scott has penned another winner for readers. I would highly recommend this book to those who enjoy historical romance, especially frontier-type stories, and to anyone who would like to enter into the Christmas spirit a little bit more fully. Though easily read as a standalone, those who have enjoyed previous Frontier Bachelors novels will delight in the recurring characters and the updates to their stories, too.

I received a free copy of this book from the author but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a favorable one and the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

Regina Scott has created a delightful group of stories in the Frontier Bachelors series, all of which blend together a beautiful outdoor setting, multilayered characters, humor, tender romance, and spiritual themes. A Convenient Christmas Wedding, set in the Lake Union region of Washington Territory during December of 1866, features the large Wallin family that I have come to love. This is Simon’s story, the musician of the family who touched me so much back in Would-Be Wilderness Bride.

Nora, a talented seamstress, is determined to distance herself from her controlling brother and sister-in-law. I loved the subtlety with which the romance between Simon and Nora is conveyed, often through shared glances, gentle touches, etc. The book’s cover reflects a Christmas spirit that is beautifully woven throughout, and the Christmas play is especially moving. The humor that is a trademark of Regina’s writing kept me smiling, and as for the three-legged cow and talking dog … well, you’ll just have to read all about them yourself.

Characters from previous stories appear, but this book can stand alone. A Convenient Christmas Wedding is one of my favorite stories in the series, and I just can’t get enough of the Wallin family. Within the Love Inspired line, 5 stars. Highly recommend.

A three-legged cow and a talking dog. Need I say more? I do love the unexpected when it comes to animals in a story and Scott certainly delivers! And I do love a good marriage of convenience romance and this one is excellent.

How Simon became so serious and reserved coming from the rowdy Wallin clan is beyond me. Loved the give and take between all the siblings -- lots of comedic fodder there. And fans of the Frontier Bachelors series will enjoy reconnecting with these audacious brothers.

It isn't long before Nora works her magic on the entire family -- a reluctant Simon included. Christmas festivities prove to be the perfect backdrop of their burgeoning romance. A scrumptiously festive read for the holidays.

This is the 5th book in Regina Scott's 'Frontier Bachelor' series and the best yet! In my opinion, that is. The book drew me in from the very beginning and I could not wait to finish it! Read it in less than one day.

Regina Scott is a fine writer, who creates stories that stir the imagination, are populated with believable characters and locales and are very God honoring. I certainly hope she plans more stories in this series, for there are more Wallins that need their story told.

This book worked well as a stand-alone, but I am now anxious to read everything in this series and get to know the Wallin family. Simon’s & Nora’s marriage is a convenient, business-like arrangement, but there is always hope for more. My favorite quote is: “It’s (marriage is) about two people becoming one in goals, in values, in love.” which is a perfect definition of marriage. This is such a wonderful, clean, historical romance and well worth reading!

Nora Underhill came to Seattle in 1866 to get away from her controlling brother and his wife who treated her like unpaid labor using emotionally abusive language to make her feel diminished and ungrateful. When she hears they are coming to Seattle to join her she approaches Simon Wallin with a proposal of marriage. She asks for his protection against her brother in exchange for applying for a land section to enhance his holdings. Simon’s large family needs more land to support itself since 2 brothers married and one is expecting a child. Nora moves from the boarding house to the family land and then faces fitting in and getting to know her husband who is a very quiet and logical farmer. Nora’s seamstress skills gives her a talent to offer as a contribution. This was a good story of two underappreciated souls finding their place and each other. Villains, however, were pretty stock selfish characters. Will look for other volumes in this series.

Yay! An enjoyable read! Although I again was kinda put off with the heroine proposing marriage to the hero at the very beginning of this novel. I am all for equal rights and what not, but come on... when it comes to relationships and romance, one should know that it is the man who pursues the woman! If it is the other way around, it will never work out.

Okay... on to book #6 in the series... :D

If you’ve been following Regina Scott’s Frontier Bachelors series, you will enjoy catching up with the Wallin family. But if, like me, this is the first book you’ve read of the five – no worries. You’ll be happy to meet these characters and it won’t be a problem to figure out who goes with whom.

This is a sweet romance between two strong characters, and while there’s not a lot of overt chemistry between them it shows up in subtler ways throughout their story. Like Simon’s hand at the small of Nora’s back. Or the ladder scenes. Or that first kiss! In addition to the romance, there’s also some great humor. I mean, you can’t really go wrong with a three-legged cow and a talking dog. Plus, the Wallin siblings are not beyond teasing each other, except of course for serious Simon. But, watching Simon soften under Nora’s influence is swoonworthy in its own right.

Bottom Line: Fans of marriage-of-convenience stories will find much to love about A Convenient Christmas Wedding. (Plus – isn’t that cover so pretty?!?) Nora is easy to love, and Simon is one of those deliciously brooding-but-good-hearted heroes we all adore. I could have done without Nora’s brother and sister-in-law… but I also think that was kinda the point. Regina Scott sweeps you away to the Pacific Northwest frontier and gives you a front row seat to a sweet and Christmasy story to cozy up with on a cold winter’s night.

A Convenient Christmas Wedding focuses on Nora and Simon. Nora moved to Washington to escape her brother and his wife, but when she learns they plan to move to the territory as well, she only has one option: marriage. I love that she proposes to Simon, something unconventional today but practically unheard of back then. It adds a nice twist to the familiar marriage of convenience plot line.

I really enjoyed reading Nora and Simon's story. It reminded me a bit of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers—no, the plot isn't too similar, but the setting is. And I could easily see the Wallin boys fitting in with Seven Brides' Pontipee brothers.

The romance between Nora and Simon slowly builds, leading to a satisfying conclusion. The book also includes a bit of mystery surrounding Nora's brother and his insistence that he take care of her. I enjoyed the resolution, which made perfect sense, though it did come about a little abruptly.

A Convenient Christmas Wedding is the fifth book in Regina Scott's Frontier Brides series, and, while it alludes to events from some of the other books, it can easily be read as a stand alone novel. I really enjoyed A Convenient Christmas Wedding—it's the perfect book for a winter night.

While attending her friend, Mattie O'Rourke's wedding, she mustered all the courage she good to take her next step...It just is not done in society! She had checked out the men of the Wallin's family and all were said to be of high character. She had no other choice! As soon as she was able to get him mostly alone, Nora approached Simon Wallin (the least pleasant and likely to settle down of the Wallins') with a marriage of Convenience proposal. It took some convincing but she would enable him to obtain what he could not in any other way and she would be free from the servitude she so dreaded...She just could not face it again! They would live separately and only be together a few times to convince others of their marriage...At least that was what the arrangement was agreed upon.
This was such a twist of the normal arrangements of that time period. I was a totally enjoyable read which I hated to put down when other duties required me to. It was refreshingly clean. There was slight humor and the various characters created were so real and interesting. The scenes described were easily visualized.
There were a few grammatical errors but this is an ARC so I overlooked those. The Title was perfect and the Cover almost perfect. The man in the picture is supposedly much taller than what the cover depicts, taking away from the accurateness of it.

These two wed under no false pretenses and only for gain of property for Simon and protection for Nora. What ensues is a tale of tender love developing despite their best intentions, of a whole clan of family who embrace Nora in their midst, and the true meaning of Christmas threaded throughout! The entire Wallin family is warm, inviting, loving and each member adds their own distinct characteristics to the story. Nora has never experienced this before, only the overbearing control of her brother and his wife. She begins to thrive under their care and really comes into her own. She loves helping where she can and this—at first—rankles Simon as he doesn’t want her to feel obligated to “serve” his family. He soon learns she’s happiest in this role. Her tenderness & care begin to soften his heart and gets past the barriers he’s put up over the years. A wonderful and warm-hearted Christmas story sure to please the palate of anyone who reads it! My favorite scene was the Christmas play at the end, it reminded me of why we celebrate it, the birth of Christ. It brought tears to my eyes!

This story takes place in the Seattle, Washington Territory in December 1866. Nora approaches Simon with a marriage proposal. He will get some land he needs in return for his protection from her overbearing brother and his wife. They will be married in name only. It doesn't take Simon too long to get on board and they each hope they aren't making a mistake.

I loved how Nora and Simon's relationship developed! It was understandably awkward at first but it didn't take long for Simon to genuinely be protective of her. There were humorous moments, especially relating to Nora's big heart. Simon needed some nudging to figure out what he really wanted. There are some great secondary characters that I enjoyed getting to know and added a lot to the story, like Nora's brother and Simon's family.

This is the fifth book in this series but works well as a standalone. I enjoy a good marriage of convenience story and this one fits the bill! It's a heartwarming story that is a perfect read for this time of year!

I've not yet read the other books in this series and it has been some time since I have read any of Regina Scott's other books, however this one has reminded me that I really should rent all of her work from the library here soon. This story really pushed hard on the theme of just what a marriage should look like, with both partners helping and respecting each other while still encouraging the other to grow.

Simon was by far my favorite character. Throughout, he struggles with feeling accepted and needed, and with Nora he finds someone who is more than willing to show him that he is. Though Nora at times came across as juvenile, she did make a good match for Simon.

My only complaint, though it didn't hamper my enjoyment of the story in any way, was that the ending had seemed a little rushed and predictable. I saw what was coming long beforehand, so while I was not disappointed in the conclusion, I do wish it had gone a different route.

I have provided an honest review after having received a free copy of this book from the author.

Heroine proposed marriage of convenience to the hero. She gets protection from an overbearing older brother and he can claim more land in his new wife's name. Soon her sweet ways are breaking through his cynical nature. This was a cozy read but lacks any real bite in the conflict department. I'm supposed to believe the hero has a complicated relationship with his family, but the family is portrayed as nothing but big, boisterous and loving throughout the story. Also, I know this is an inspirational and certainly am not expecting torrid love scenes - but some tension between a couple that is newly already married would have been appreciated. These are nice people but I never felt a sizzle of attraction between them.

Fans of the series will likely love this, and the story has a nice cozy feel suitable for the holidays. I just wanted a little more oomph to the conflict and tension.

This was a fun light hearted book for me. In order to get out from her not so nice brother Nora went to the extreme and did something not done by women in her time and proposed to Simon. It was nice to watch their relationship grow from one of convenience to one of love. I really enjoyed the setting of this book as I enjoy a good historical fiction book and add in a little romance and that is just a bonus for me. The author also did a good job with the descriptions of everything from the characters to the landscapes to the feelings of each person. I have enjoyed many books by this author and with each book I enjoy her writing even more. Even though this is a part of a series you are able to read it as a stand alone book.

I’m unofficially completing a TBR challenge. I say “unofficial” because this challenge is nothing more than a goal I made for myself for 2020. My goal is simple: read at least one book per month from my Kindle or bookshelf that I’ve always meant to read, but sort of forgot about. My first book for this challenge is Regina Scott’s A Convenient Christmas Wedding. This book is actually the fifth book in Scott’s Frontier Bachelors series, but I didn’t have a single problem starting with book #5. I found the plot fun and engaging. I loved the unique cast of endearing characters. And I very much appreciated Scott’s timely themes and spiritual messages. All in all, A Convenient Christmas Wedding is a satisfying historical romance!

The hero and heroine, Simon and Nora, remind me of Sheldon and Amy from the TV show Big Bang Theory. If you are unfamiliar with Sheldon and Amy, that’s totally OK, just know that they are two quirky, introverted super-geniuses who fall in love despite their awkward and often negative traits. Simon is a superiorly hardworking man who sees EVERYTHING in a very straightforward, logical, black or white manner. He often seems unemotional, and he lacks an understanding of basic social cues. It’s very difficult for Simon to comprehend emotional situations, which is very much like Sheldon on Big Bang Theory. Marrying for mutual benefit makes sense to Simon — both partners benefit in some way from the deal. But marrying for love, while he understands that it does happen, just doesn’t quite make a lot of sense. Simon can see it working out for his brothers and their wives, but for him? It’s just not logical. Nora believes, due to years and years of familial neglect and manipulation, that she is an unlovable burden. She won’t even pray for herself because she doesn’t want to be seen as selfish or as a burden to God. Nora, right from the start, appreciates Simon’s ability to see the logic in a given situation. She finds his logical approach reliable and stabilizing. So, Nora approaches Simon with a deal he is sure to understand — you protect me, I’ll give you my land. Together a uniquely logical marriage is conceived. By the way, Sheldon would have found this sort of marriage ideal, and Amy would have understood this about him just as Nora understands Simon.

Of the many things I enjoyed about Simon and Nora’s relationship, I especially loved how they were the right fit for each other. We, humans, crave relationships, so much so we run into some we have no business being a part of. We force the issue and then wonder why things aren’t working out. God has a plan for each of us. In that plan is often a special someone meant to be our person — the one who will really see our specialness, idiosyncrasies and all. Simon doesn’t believe he will find love because he knows he’s different. He doesn’t feel life like everyone else. Nora doesn’t believe she will find love because she knows she is an unlovable burden. But when they are together, Simon and Nora are a great team. Nora gets Simon’s logical bent and can interpret his seemingly odd and unfeeling actions and words to his family and friends. And Simon is able to see Nora clearly — she is a beautiful, self-sacrificing, loyal friend. Together they fall into God’s plan and become a true loving partnership. Nora and Simon’s relationship illustrates the value of being patient, listening for God’s instruction, and following His lead. When we do, very beautiful and satisfying things await us.

As far as A Convenient Christmas Wedding goes, I couldn’t have picked a better novel to kick off my unofficial TBR challenge. A Convenient Christmas Wedding is fun, endearing, and sweet. This is a novel I can easily say I highly recommend.

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Harlequin.com on November 17, 2017, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This was fine. It's exactly as it says on the tin: Nora Underhill is willing to enter into a marriage of convenience to escape the suffocating drudgery of serving as an unpaid maid and companion to her brother and sister-in-law; Simon Wallin is looking for some way to expand his family's holdings in time for spring planting. They agree that theirs will be a "paper marriage" - until Nora's family suddenly moves to Seattle and tries to draw her back into their lives. She moves in with Simon and his large, boisterous family, and the holiday spirit slowly draws them together.

There's not a lot of Christmas here, and by the time it arrives, it seems like all the characters have decided that Simon, Mr Stoic and Family Cynic, is the one who needs to change. Nora's just too filled with wonder and gratitude, willing to pitch in where she can, and the gigantic Wallin family (stars of this series) come to bear on Simon and force him to become more emotive. Nora never really has to face her family and shut them down; instead, .

This author knows her category and story beats well, and I'd definitely read her again. The "God stuff" is weaved into the story fairly well; it's not heavy-handed or pontificating, as is fitting with a historical. And, of course, to read any of these stories set in the 1800s is to tacitly ignore the native people that the white settlers pushed off the land so that they can claim it.

clean romance

I enjoyed the well developed characters and plot within this stand alone story within this entertaining series.

I enjoy reading the stories in sequence as I find the underlying plot continues as it unfolds for the family and friends of the characters. That being said you do not need to read each story to enjoy each book.

I liked the theme of finding strength within and without of ourselves. Both main characters had an inner strength that was hard for them to express. There was fear from within but also life experiences that created some doubts. But when they found faith with God and with themselves and their spouse…they grew even stronger.

A story of hope and strength. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

A good story that did not drag on the unlucky happenings in the end, but, it was full of contradictions. She wanted an equal sharing and consultation from him, yet she did not reciprocate; getting a cow, getting a dog, going to her brothers house for diner.

Nora has been smothered and taken advantage of by her older brother and his wife for years, so when they follow her to Washington state from the East, she proposes a marriage of convenience to local logger Simon, in return for giving him a tract of land, who sees the logic and agrees. Seriously loved this. Simon is described as cynical and reserved, but honestly, he seemed to be living with an anxiety disorder--he searches for logic, he sees the many ways things can go wrong, and he accounts for them all in his plans. I really liked how matter of fact they both were, how he thought it natural she would continue with her seamstress career, and how they respected each other. There were some great scenes, like when she objects to him telling her not to do anything around the house because her part in their marriage was the land and she has done her part. They were both charming and likable and their journey to accepting their emotions was quite enjoyable.
