Family. Harper Montgomery has been trying to define the term for years…
When Harper got pregnant at fourteen, her family abandoned her to be a single mother with no support system. She survived the only way she knew how—hard work and determination. Now she is a nurse in her early thirties, and her son Jamie is ready to embark on high school. Harper can finally say they’ve made it. She can’t take all the credit, though.
Dakota Daughtry isn’t family, but when he signed on to be a Big Brother to Jamie, he finally felt at home…
Joining the Big Brother community program was only meant to boost Dakota’s resume while working on his GED. Once he met Jamie and his mother Harper, he finally found a place where he belonged. Years later, Jamie is graduating the program, and his obligation to hang around is over, but he can’t make himself leave. Jamie is more like a son than a little brother now, and Harper…well, he’s been trying to deny his feelings for her all along.
Jamie is thrilled about the blossoming relationship between his mother and Dakota. His birth father Aiden, not so much…
Aiden doesn’t want Harper—he’s too focused on his career for that—but he doesn’t want Dakota to have her either, and he’s willing to play dirty to ruin Harper and Dakota’s chances at becoming a real family. But things get complicated when Aiden starts to develop actual feelings for Harper’s best friend, and a secret is revealed about Dakota’s past that could change everything…
Harper must choose…family or love? Or can she finally have both?
The beauty in this book lies within the unique, warm, lovable family that Ms. Butler has created. As a person who comes from a non-traditional family and at one point was planning to create a non-traditional family, her concept of family rings very true to me. I loved it. I loved the love that everyone had for Jamie, and man, that Jamie kid is a scene stealer of epic proportions.
I would have liked to have had a little more depth to Dakota and Harper’s relationship. They were adorably sweet together—but I felt like I wanted to dig deeper. I wanted more of their shared history. I wanted more of how Harper found herself in her situation and how Dakota wound up coming into their lives. I feel like that might have also helped ratchet the tension up a bit, and give the conflict a little more impact.
My heart is so greedy.
The writing style took me a little bit to get used to. The present tense style made me sometimes feel like I was reading a movie manuscript, which actually helped me vividly picture some scenes, but also took my brain a long time to warm to in general. There are also multiple viewpoints—but they’re clearly defined, and I actually really enjoyed getting peeks into so many people’s heads.
Maybe Forever is littered with these adorable, heartwarming moments. The dialogue rings true to me and there were moments I found myself smiling big, heart full. It’s a solid debut and I can’t wait to see what Ms. Butler has in store for us next. ~ Shelly, 3.5 stars

I feel like maybe Maybe Forever is the definition of a sweet, small town romance. It was charming, and quirky, and filled with tender, warming moments and likable characters, which made it an altogether lovely read.
I did, at times, wish I could have gotten to know those likable characters a little better. The unique third person, present tense writing style, which took a little time to get used to, felt sometimes like a barrier to really understanding what everyone was thinking and doing, where'd they been and where they were going. While the multiple POVs were interesting and easy to follow—surprisingly—it made getting INTO the story a touch harder; like we were getting a broad overview of these people's lives, not an intimate look at what was happening. I can't deny that there were moments when I felt like I'd been dropped into the middle of this story, and I would have loved to get deeper into what happened with Harper and Aiden and their teen pregnancy, among other things.
However, the more I read, the more I felt like I wanted to stay. I did enjoy this book, I did start to fall for these characters. And my heart did soar and swoon and warm with how Keyanna Butler created this crazy, inclusive, loving family.
Maybe Forever wasn't ever over the top dramatic—it ebbed and flowed in a sweet, easy manner which made it a joy to read. And now, I find myself ready to read more. Especially after that ending, but even so, Blue Moon is for sure a sweet, small town I'd like to re-visit. And soon. ~ Beth, 3.5 stars
Getting pregnant at any age can be a daunting and anxious time but getting pregnant as a teenager even more so. I know because I have been there myself. All your friends are finishing high school, going off to University, travelling the world and enjoying a party lifestyle. Meanwhile, you learn pretty quickly that this is baby you are carrying is going to be something that changes you for the rest of your life. I don’t mean in a negative way though. Having a child, no matter what age or relationship status you are in is one of the most beautiful, life changing experiences you can ever have.
Harper has dedicated her life to raising her son Jamie after getting pregnant in her early teeange years. She pretty much did it alone too, the father of her child wasn’t very interested in being a young dad. However, in the last four years she has had help through a mentoring, big brother type of programme. Dakota has been a constant in their lives and is now a part of their extended family. He has been a father figure to Jamie at a time when a young boy needs a male influence to guide them across the bridge of adolescence .
Now that Harper is about to turn 30 and her son is starting his freshman year she really needs to be thinking about put her own needs first too. She has been single for a long time and she is still young enough to find love with someone special. Maybe that person is someone who has been there for her all along?
Dakota has more than friendship feelings for Harper and he is ready to make it known to her. However, now that someone else is showing interest in Harper, her ex Aiden is now vying for more time with Jamie & her. He had his chance years ago and really needs to let it go, Harper deserves to be happy with someone who really cares for her.
I really loved how Dakota & Harper came together, after years of friendship because it was a great foundation to build a loving relationship on. I would have liked to have read more about the ‘coming together’ as I had no idea if it had actually happened or not, until close to the end of this book. Keyanna has left me wanting more from the next book in this series as there was a huge revelation that will change everything! Great debut from this new author.
Light-hearted, feel-good, good old fashioned romance novel!
Ms. Butler's debut novel gets an A+ from me :)
Where do I start? What a beautiful story. The story line was spectacular and wholesome. The characters felt like friends. Also if you are in the market for a book boyfriend, look no further because Dakota Daughtry is it. You will fall in love with his sense of humor, his witty one liners, and his sweet romantic side. Although I love Harper, she was a total sweetheart, I think the male characters really take the cake in this book. Strong, charismatic, respectful, everything you would look for in a man. Jamie is also amazing, I love his little teenage self! There is so much depth to all of these characters, they feel so real and relatable. Every last one of them. I found myself chuckling at them many times.
Basically what I'm saying is that this novel is a must read. I dare you to tell me that you didn't come out of the other side of this book without a smile on your face, wanting more.
What an absolute gripping debut release from Keyanna Butler! A Contemporary Romance that stands out in the genre for having such a realistic (and unique) relationship at its foundation. With a foundation as rock solid as the kind of love that's evident between Dakota, Jamie, and Harper... the story can go nowhere but up... and Maybe Forever does just that. From the first few lines I was sucked in and quite positive my kindle was staying in my hands until I read the last word. Dakota and Harper's connection is palpable from the start and watching the relationship transition from something beautiful to so much more was a refreshing treat. I didn't feel any dread of what was to come, only an eagerness to see what was to come next. My favorite thing? I thought you'd never ask. Jamie. Jamie is an absolute scene stealer and I adore him. My biggest smiles came from this character hands down. That said, Keyanna does something even more than give us three great solid characters. She gave us a whole handful and then some; Each with a distinct voice and personality that brought something incredible to the story as a whole... Missing Pieces to the puzzle if you will.
Full of sweetness and humor, I enjoyed it from start to finish and I'm requesting to be put at the top of the list of people who want more... the next book in this series is now on my anticipated reads list for sure.
This book is not a standalone, the story does not conclude at the end of it, there is at least one more to come. I liked the premise of this book and I have enjoyed reading it for the most part. I understand this is a debut novel and it hasn't been a bad one. The writing is a bit amateurish at times but I like the way the relationship has developed between Dakota, Harper and Jamie. My main complaint with this book is the lack of description, Dakota mentions about Harper's curly brown hair and an olive cheek and there is no description of Dakota or Jamie at all. Are they tall, short, fat, thin, dark haired, blonde haired, black, white or mixed. I want to be able to visualise the characters because it helps me to connect to them but I have nothing to work with so these people are completely faceless to me. I didn't see the twist coming and I'm intrigued by it so I will be reading the next instalment and hope that I won't be disappointed. I also hope that I don't have to wait too long for it.
Well, before I dive into this review, I have a disclaimer. I know this author from Facebook and I adore her. With that being said, when she sent me an ARC, I was equally excited and horrified. Excited because I was about to read her debut novel and terrified that I was going to review it. I could never rave about a novel if I hadn’t really liked it. So I started to read it. And something really wonderful happened. I forgot that I was reading a book written by someone I knew. I simply submerged into the world of Harper, Dakota, and Jamie. I forgot my worries and for a few hours I just enjoyed their gripping story. A story full of love, the tight bond that unites a family. Even an unconventional one. I found this book to be unique and refreshing. The author crafted the structure of the story beautifully giving the reader so much more than just another romance novel. The characters were realistic and well developed. The plot plausible, but exciting. I wont go into a summary of the story, but I’ll say this, Harper is the kind of heroine we all want to have as a friend. She is fierce, loyal, funny, and a protective of those she loves. Her relationship with Dakota (oh sweet Dakota) was genuine and deep. My favorite part of this book was the dialogue. It was the perfect combination of witty and funny. I laughed out loud many times. Also, I’m ashamed to confess that I found myself a little envious of this authors’ ability to convey a witty and sharp dialogue. The flow of the words—easy and smooth, reminded me of Colleen Hoover’s writing. This book didn’t read as a debut novel. It was exceptionally well written and captivating from the first page to the last. It left me wanting for more. This is a must read and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
In this debut effort from Keyanna Butler, Dakota Daughtry is product of foster homes and becomes a big brother to Jamie. Having gotten pregnant with Jamie at a young age, and left to rear the child on her own, Dakota's presence is greatly appreciated and loved by both Jamie and his mom Harper. As Jamie starts high school, both Harper and Dakota realize that there is love between all of them, and not just a familial type of love. They decide to take a chance and see if their relationship might turn into something more.
I did like this story, especially the younger man/ older woman aspect. The age difference isn't huge, but it made for an interesting story because of the relationship between Dakota and Jamie -- there is a lot at stake here. Jamie's got some interesting things going on at school too, as he flirts with peer pressure and picking fights with the school quarterback.
Enter the biological father who suddenly wants to get involved in Jamie's life, and you've got some conflict there. I thought there was going to be more tension and conflict here, and I was disappointed things seemed to work out rather easily for them. There is a slight cliffhanger at the end here, when some new connections between the major players are uncovered.
Overall, this was a good debut effort. There are multiple points of view (lots of head hopping) and it is told in present tense. I am not a personal fan of present tense writing and there were parts of this I felt could have undergone another revision or two, especially to ratchet up some of the tension of the situation. I did feel that the characters were interesting and the plot was original enough to draw me into the next book in the series.
I love a book that you can sit and read in one setting. I'm really excited for Keyanna and really happy for her to put out a debut novel. So congrats! I genuinely enjoyed these characters and the storyline. I thought it was a sweet and genuine love between the main characters. There were definitely a couple laugh out loud moments and a couple teary eye moments which I loved about this book.
A really sweet story, much more than a romance. It was easy to fall completely in love with all of the wonderful characters in this book. A beautiful friendship than can build organically to something "Maybe Forever" I loved the little bonus chapter...more like a bonus teaser!!
This book could have been much better, but in my opinion it missed the mark. The writing style seems very juvenile and doesn’t really flow. I also found the conversation difficult to follow at times because there was no indication of who was speaking, not to mention all of the different points of view. My biggest pet peeve though is timelines and this book does not have a working timeline. Finally, after all of that it is not even a complete story. It may not end in a cliffhanger that has to do with the romantic relationships in the book, but it still ends in a cliffhanger.
The premise behind this book was good but it just wasn’t handled well. The actions of the adults was so juvenile and just made it hard to get into the story.
3.5 Stars The whole premise to Maybe Forever written by Keyanna Butler was so different, so refreshing that I just had to read it. Being the product of a young mother’s pregnancy I instantly connected with what Butler was trying to give her readers- a different kind of story of love, trust and struggles everything a true family goes through.
One thing I can definitely say about Butler’s writing is that she delivers real, unique characters and relationships. They aren’t perfect. Their story isn’t necessarily normal but their love is solid to the very core of it’s foundation. In Maybe Forever she writes of many different loves. Whether it’s love from a mother to child, a friend to a friend or a romantic love, Butler delivers a clear, positive description of people who belong together instantly connecting you to her story and causing you to root for the love between these characters.
Although Butler delivered wonderful characters with a unique love that made my heart grow, her book was kind of hard to really get into at times. I missed really being able to get inside these characters mindsets feeling their thoughts, emotions and connections. I felt like really diving into their innermost thoughts might have connected a reader more to the book, especially me. I wanted to not just understand their emotion, but feel it to my very core. I felt like Butler just missed that mark for me.
Even with the my hesitation, I felt like overall Butler delivered a really great story. Something different, unique and would completely interest a reader. Maybe Forever was honest, heartfelt and sweet something I feel readers looking for a lazy Sunday read would enjoy.
There is no way that you can tell me that this is a debut novel. The characters, the emotions, the realism flows off this page and you find yourself with a bird's eye view of the events as they unfold. This book connected with me and allowed me to see things from my husband's perspective when it comes to our children. Whereas Harper has one, I have three. Stepping in to fill the shoes that another man left vacant takes courage and even though Dakota was there for Jaime through a program, he remained there throughout and became a permanent fixture in Jamie's life. So much that Jamie saw him as his father figure. The love between Dakota and Harper is real and what most women would look for in a relationship. One that has a solid foundation and uses life experiences to build and grow from. Keyanna covers all the bases with this story and I know that I will definitely be waiting on the next one.
This book definitely isn't your usual saccharine sweet debut romance novel. This has depth and characters that are realistically portrayed, sometimes devastatingly so. Though it was more bare bones and predominantly dialogue, there is a larger message of accepting hardships and letting them make you stronger rather than succumbing to the pressure to do what's easy. I really appreciated the array of relationships portrayed, rather than having the book focus on only 2 people and their side of the story. I didn't realize going into it that it wasn't a standalone, but I still felt like the main arc of this particular installment was completed, there's just a hook or twist added at the last minute to setup the next book. Keyana Butler has put her heart in her book rather than on her sleeve, and I'm really looking forward to seeing her grow as an author!
3.25 stars because I couldn't decide on 3 or 3.5 :) Definitely a strong debut and an author to look out for :)
A strong debut from author Keyanna Butler! Can't wait to read more from her. This book was unique in the fact that it didn't have your typical hero/heroine portrayed in the pages. It was refreshing in that manner. And it wasn't the insta-love that many books lead into. This relationship, M/F, developed over time. What tripped me up slightly as I got into the book was that it was nearly all dialogue. Even though the chapters were broken down into the three main characters, I never quite knew who was talking, because I didn't get to see "inside" their head. I think it would help me, as a reader, in the future if there was a tad more inner dialogue so I could feel like I know the character more. To understand what they're feeling, thinking, wanting... Otherwise, it was well-written, in a voice that was honest, genuine and with a heartfelt storyline.
Maybe Forever tells the story of Harper, a school girl mom all grown up, and Dakota, the young man who appeared in their lives as the babysitter but became so much more. Jamie is now 15-years-old and about to start High School. He wishes for a proper relationship with his father, but is unsure of how it will impact both his mom and Dakota, who he sees as a parent by proxy.
This debut novel is sweet, full of romance and minor angst. With no editing or grammatical errors to distract the eye, you are swiftly drawn into their lives as the plot moves along at a smooth pace. Told in present tense, by multiple points of view, there is something here for everyone. Definitely recommended by me.
If you are looking for a quick, light, sweet read then this is the book for you. I did enjoy it but I do think if we might have gotten more information than the little we did on how Dakota came into their lives and maybe just more history in general I may have fallen in love with these characters more than I did. It did have its moments of funny, caring, and heartfelt moments made that made it an enjoyable read. Sometimes there were scenes in the book that I feel could have had more to them than what there was.
This authors writing style was a bit different for me. It was written in the third person and took some time to get used to. This author has a lot of potential and I look forward to reading more and seeing how they grow.
As a reader and a blogger, I love to discover new, debut authors. Unfortunately, this debut book didn’t work for me. I don’t mind reading a bit inexperienced story, authors need to learn to write, and I’m in awe for those who give it an honest try (I know I wouldn’t).
Based upon the blurb I expected a story with sorrow and angst, but all goes very nice and friendly. My biggest issue is the number of POV’s. For me personally it was too much, I wanted to know more about Harper and her difficult past, and more about her and Dakota.
So many emotions for this book and they are happy lovey feelings. This story is truly heart warming. If I could give this book a 6 star rating I would. This only book 1 and I can not wait for more.
Dakota and Harper, Jamie and Bianca, Aiden and Casey, Mason and Amelia. So many journeys to follow and I am more than thrilled to follow. Such a strong family unit made of only love and support. This is truly sweet. But man oh man I love the twist and turns on this journey!
This was a love story that was unique and unlike most I've read in the genre. This debut author does a great job in defining the relationship and roles between Jamie, Dakota and Harper. I loved the dialogue between them all - cute, funny and sweet and sometimes sarcastic, like this favorite line: "Yes, pretty sure. I mean, I know it's not God's baby, so you're next on the list." My only regret is that the ending is a cliffhanger that I didn't see coming!
I'm at a loss for words. I haven't ever read a book with this sort of storyline before. There isn't a whole lot of drama and zero angst. But what I really need to know is... When will the next one come out because holy cliffhanger!!
This book moved quickly. I enjoyed all the characters and how they interacted. There are some twist and turns in this story that kept me interested. Now the ending, that has me like....WHAT??? Excited to see how the next book plays out. Fingers crossed for a HEA!!
DNF. I didn't get very far and I just couldn't continue. The story premise sounded interesting, but it was very hard to read and determine who was saying what. The way the author wrote dialog and action, I had to go back and reread several times in order to figure out what was going on. The person doing whatever action (He chuckles, she points, he sits down) was not the person saying the dialog immediately following, on the same line. Disappointed as I wanted to like this book.
I know this was a first book for the author and hopefully they continue to grow as an author. I'd be willing to read something else by them in the future.
