Other Than Flashbacks is a swift-paced mural of the mid 1960's set in the California counter-culture and the remote Sierras and jungle coasts of Oaxaca. The present-tense story follows the revolution and evolution of an intimate band of friends, lovers and adversaries as they pass through the psychedelic quests and unpredictable events of the time. A narrative of uninhibited personal transformation, free-wheeling and vivid, with many dramatic facets and turns.
Ken Kesey meets Carlos Castaneda meets Jack Kerouac... "I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and interesting, and the narrative moved along at a good pace. It captured my attention and kept my interest start to finish. If you lived through the '60s, you'll recognize in the characters yourself, or friends, or people you may have heard about, or people you wanted to be. The story follows a young man named Jake and friends through a quest for life, adventure , enlightenment and self awareness. A good solid story told by someone who obviously knows what it was like to be young in the '60s. The only criticism I would have is that the text could have used a little more attention to editing, as there were many typos and syntax errors. However, it did nothing to detract from the story. All in all, a great novel. I'm looking forward to the sequel to see what Jake and company's next adventures and discoveries will be."
