They Call Me Momma Katherine: How One Woman’s Brokenness Became Hope for Uganda’s Children

Rate this book
Do you ever sell yourself short? That’s what Katherine Hines did before she realized she was selling God short. After years of tragedies, Katherine learned that God could do more in her life than she ever imagined if she trusted Him and believed. She discovered that He wants to change lives through us and bless us in the process. Whoever we are, wherever we came from, God can use us to make a difference in someone’s life.

Katherine’s story begins with tragedies, but God touched her heart at a crusade and led her to Uganda as a missionary to the children. Leaving her prestigious job and home, she went to a land of mud huts and polluted water. In the midst of sickness and poverty, she loved and cared for the orphans of the war-torn country, as she faced witch doctors and Muslim agitators. Katherine shares her life story to help us know that we can all make a difference – if only we let God . . .

5 stars. Katherine Hines isn't a professional writer, nor would she claim to be one. This book doesn't always flow smoothly, but the story it reveals is incredible. Katherine Hines is a 'ordinary' women who knows she is loved by God. And she has purposed to share that love, and allow God to love people through her. Her commitment to love has changed the life to many people; her sacrifices have given life to many. Literally.

I was first drawn to this book because it was another book about another 'Katie" in Uganda. But this book is different from 'Kisses from Katie'(one of my favorite books) in that Katherine Hines had many life experiences before going to Uganda. She has also been working in Uganda for over 20 years and her work, loving children in a tangible way, has the 20 years of fruit to show it.

I’m thankful that people choose to tell stories. This is the story of a woman who moved to Uganda and chose to spend her life pouring into the people there. It gave me a lot to contemplate. Thankful that people share their lives in the form of books :)

Realistic accounting of Missionary work in Africa

We have been developing curriculums and educational programs in South Africa since 2007. Katherine has included the blessings and the sorrows of doing the Lord's work in areas where tribal culture, superstitions, witchcraft and extremely extensive corrupt governments are the norm. Our project to train unemployed youth in the poorest township was literally taken over by corrupt politicians and the national we trusted to be our manager and a true Christian.
Sadly many international NPO projects are seized each year by opportunistic politicians who want to take credit for successful programs to help them get re- elected with little regard for the loss of Bible teaching and small business development and employment for the community.
My heart was literally broken in 2017 but we are still doing our best to support and stabilize a new location for the wonderful young adults the Lord has been bringing to us to learn His Word and how to earn a living in a hostile environment with 80 percent unemployment for young adults under 30.
It is encouraging to see what Kathryn has been able to overcome through her faith and perseverance.

Tremendous sacrifice and blessing!

Great book - Praise the Lord! It is a blessing to read of the sacrifice Katherine Hines made to share the love of Christ with the people of Uganda. Although it's not explicitly stated, it appears that sister Katherine gave up the option of having a biological family here in the U.S. for an adopted and spiritual family in Uganda.

How to influence and affect the lives of children

I would recommend this book. It shows the ups and downs of the Christian experience when we make the decision to follow our calling. It makes clear that the path is not always rosey but it is fulfilling.

So much loss and heartache -- so much to give and live.
I am always touched by people who follow their heart.

I really enjoyed the story in this book, however, the writing talent and flow of the book was not professional. This did not bother me to much because Catherine Hines is a missionary, not an author. I highly doubt she wrote her story to entrance us all with her writing skills, but to show God’s glory and how He changed her life. If that was her goal, she achieved it.

Her story of how she just loves and “mothers” every child God places before her is mind blowing and I have a deep respect for her and her work.

Like I said, the choppiness of the book didn’t bother me to much, but sometimes it confused the story for me. I would get lost and confused because she would not explain things or their backstory very clearly. I got the impression that she published this book more as a thing for people who already knew her and what she does, so the book felt very close and personal. It made me feel like I knew her and it was a great feeling when I read it.

All in all, the book was good, more because if Catherine herself and her love and heart. I think we should all read her story and try to live like her, wether in Africa or America.

Opening lines:

Trouble. Yes, I had already seen enough trouble to last a lifetime, for I had struggled and grappled with the painful events of my early years and resisted and wrestled with the God who loved me as His own. Now, at 6:30 a.m. in June of 1994, as British airways delivered me to Entebbe, Uganda, I was immediately struck with the large letters E-N-T-E-B-B-E against the hill at the airport. I grabbed my camera and took aim, but suddenly, a man in a security uniform and carrying an AK-47, approached me and growled, "You are not to take pictures here. Move on please."

Ms. Katherine does an excellent job of demonstrating how God’s grace can be found in the midst of tragedy and how a person dedicated to the Lord can make a profound impact on the lives of others. While it is hard to measure the impact Ms. Katherine has had on the lives of those she’s served in Uganda, I’m sure we will be able to see the fruit of her labor in the kingdom to come. I heartily recommend this to anyone interested in missions.

Wonderful life story

It is unbelievable how some people have to live when we in America have so much! With God's power Katherine has changed so many lives. Her life story will change your life if you let it. I pray you will let God impact your life!

Very good. My husband and I have been to Uganda. This book accurately represents the living conditions and problems there. May God continue to bless this ministry.
