And in Stars and Stripes on Stage , the boys are determined to take home the grand prize at the school talent show—until they meet someone who might need it more.

This is a six-book series about four boys who start a club in their urban neighborhood and go on local adventures. I loved the four main characters (two African American, one Jamaican American, and one Hispanic) and how funny, smart, heroic, and clever they were. Their nontraditional homes helped build their dynamic personalities: one raised by his grandmother, one by divorced parents, one by a single dad, and one by a large extended family living in the same household.

This series gave me a great jumping point to discuss difficult topics with my first grader such as slavery, the Underground Railroad, Native American legends, deforestation, and homelessness. I requested my local library to order these for the children’s section because they were only available from our city library. I definitely recommend these for your developing reader! They were probably a 2nd/3rd grade reading level, for reference, so I read it out loud to my son over the course of the month.
