Is Anita actually supposed to help solve her murder or is something else going on?
Can there be romance after death?
A murder mystery like no other.

At three hours after midnight, all was quiet in the hotel room, Olivia was in REM sleep and dreaming. Her eyes were darting around under her lids.
Olivia was making her way through the thick forest, and snow was falling, and it crunched under her feet. The woods looked stark, black and white though the precipitation made it pretty enough. She wasn’t on any path, and it was rough going, the terrain was uneven, and the detective was also on an incline. The further she went, the more difficult the trek. She looked down at her feet; the snow was quite a bit deeper now, and she was suddenly wearing old wooden snowshoes.
Tweet, tweet, tweedily tweet.

A red cardinal flew past her and landed in a birch tree, a beautiful spot of color with the white environment that surrounded her. It jumped several times, knocking snow from the branch to the ground. Olivia had a sense that the bird wanted her to pursue it, and so she did though the going was slow as the incline got steeper.
“What’s this?” A splotch of blood in the snow, but no way to tell if it originated from an animal or human. Olivia perceived a faint sound and it was necessary to listen intently. The Cardinal remained silent as if allowing her to hear whatever it was. She bent closer to the base of the tree near the blood where she observed a watch strap and part of the face of the watch, and when Olivia pulled it out, she could see that there was blood on it. So it was human blood.
A thin hand appeared from beneath the snow and grabbed her wrist, shaking free of it and then stood up. The bird tweeted again, wanting her to follow it and so she did. The slope now almost impossible to climb, but now Olivia could see the top and so kept going. As she struggled to move forward, she was able to smell burning wood, the moderate wind blowing it in her direction.

What A Fun Read!
I Was Murdered Last Night, by A. J. Gallant, is a mystery mixed with the paranormal.
Anita, a young woman, is murdered in New York City for no apparent reason. Her soul remains at the crime scene full of questions as to what's next. Other deceased souls lingering in the area direct Anita to the white light where she can get into Heaven. A loving person, with no enemies, she is quite surprised when Heaven won't let her in.
Enter Detective Olivia Brown and an array of interesting characters that not only guide her at being a ghost but also help her in solving her own murder.
A fast-paced enjoyable story! I would love to revisit these characters again in a future novel.

I was given a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

The Big Apple, filled with tourist attractions, skyscrapers and the attraction of Central Park, an oasis in the middle of the glass and concrete. For Anita, Central Park was the last thing she ever saw, alive, that is. Like the gridlock of New York traffic, Anita’s soul remained, stalled at the crime scene, a witness to the crime scene events. Shouldn’t she have gone into the light? Why is she being held in a sort of holding pen for souls who have not moved on? Perhaps she has unfinished business, like maybe nailing the thugs that stole her life? Enter Detective Olivia Brown, hard-boiled, a realist and yet, there is a connection that Anita is compelled to explore?

Let’s say that being a ghost isn’t something that comes easy for Anita, so much to learn, but it isn’t like she doesn’t have the time anymore. Her first foray with trying to connect with Olivia is less than successful, but soon, they are a team, or else Olivia is going mad. Someone is going down for Anita’s murder and who better to help nail them than their victim?

A.J. Gallant’s cozy mystery with a slight paranormal twist, I Was Murdered Last Night is an easy to read, easy to follow and easy to enjoy mystery with a little help from beyond the veil. Anita is one smart cookie, even for a newbie spirit as she seeks justice for herself. Olivia is a “just the facts” kind of woman, definitely NOT a shrinking violet who goes the extra mile for a case. They are unlikely allies that go together like peanut butter and jelly! And the rest of A.J. Gallant’s characters? From quirky spirits to nasty bad guys, they fit perfectly into this tale, rounding out this mystery and adding a sometimes amusing, sometimes romantic flavor. Clever writing, wonderful scenes and characters that come to life, well, most of them, anyway. Follow along as the mystery unfolds and ask yourself, was Anita a victim of poor timing or is there more to her death? Will she ever go into the light? How will Olivia explain her actions and “hunches” at the station?

3.5 to 4 stars

This is a new author for me. So I always want to be honest in my reviews. I really liked this story line about a young woman that solves her own murder. That is such an interesting thought that you could run in so many directions with in that story line alone. Sometimes I had to back track because I was not sure which character was talking. But with that being said I caught my self laughing a lot because the banter between the real world and spirit world was comical. Now to that which bugged me....I thought there would be more bang at the end. I was left with a lot of questions. The big question is What happened to Tom, what about Olivia's career, I really wanted to see John and Henry carted off to hell.

Either way I did enjoy reading and did not feel I had wasted my time. If there is another book in the future I would definitely read.

There were a few grammatical errors but not enough for me to complain really, just that since it is a e-book the author needs to have the editor go back through it.

Powerfully intriguing! I've never read a story quite like this one! We journey through a form of the afterlife with Anita, a young beautiful woman who was ruthlessly murdered by assassins in a park at night. For some reason only known by higher powers, she is denied access to enter the light of heaven and is the wielder of special abilities that are extremely rare for a "ghost". She latched onto Detective Olivia Brown, who just happens to have psychic powers running in her family and must accept that she can now see and communicate with some spirits. Anita must team up with Olivia to track down her assassins and prevent the death of other important people who are destined to change the world.
Masterfully written with intricate details of what the limbo of the afterlife must be like, the writer takes you on a majestic journey that stretches your imagination and make you wonder if these circumstances may actually exist. With a colorful cast of characters both benevolent and nefarious, this book is a whole new spin on good vs evil that left me absolutely delighted. I was completely absorbed from the very first page and found myself quite unable to put this book down whatsoever! The storyline and dialogue both flowed smoothly at a fast pace with not one single dull moment and was powerfully intriguing. Even if you're not really a fan of ghost stories, you HAVE to give this one a chance! Definitely one of the best books I've ever read!

Ghosts, Hit Men, and Detective Olivia Brown

Anita William is stabbed in the heart, the victim of a hit. Det. Olivia Brown, from a family of mediums, gets the case. Anita guides Olivia to the hit men and is able to change the course of future events. The story is told mostly from Anita's point of view and is not your typical "spooky" ghost story. One question not answered is why a hit was put on Anita, but still a good read.

Great story line but really bad editing!

The story line is great. That's why I continued to read this book amid some exceptionally poor editing. I really would have liked to give it four or five stars, but errors such as using the word "exercise" in place of the correct word (which was "exorcise") made it impossible. Also, many misplaced comas made it hard to follow. And finally, it is never disclosed who ordered the death of the main character or why. Please have a good editor go through this book because the ideas and story line are really good.

Heaven...

Good premise and a different kind of storyline. I love the idea of heaven...gave me a good feeling to think of it.
Anita & Olivia make a good team. Both characters are nicely defined . The author leaves us with several ways she can take this story. Will be interesting to see what she chooses...😊

I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, in exchange for an honest review, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I was very intrigued by the title and premise of this book, as I enjoy murder mysteries. The fact that it involves a ghost, was a bonus. Also, I do like to find new authors and series to read, and A.J. Gallant was new for me.

Overall, the premise was great. In most of the other stories I have read involving ghosts, usually, if the ghost is "new" to death, s/he learns how to cope with this situation. Gallant took an interesting approach that I had never read, by getting inside the head of the protagonist, Anita, and have her ask and question this new existence in a more philosophical way. Additionally, the second main protagonist, Detective Olivia Brown, was faced with questioning and accepting her "gift" of being able to communicate with the newly dead, Anita, as well as the spirit world. The overall story concept was a very good one.

With all of that said, that's why I gave only 3 stars, instead of my typical 4 stars or slightly higher.

A minor factor while reading involved typos and grammar errors. Not a huge deal for me, as no one is ever perfect, plus it is a common occurrence in both self-published and traditionally-published books. It is a factor that often is noted when receiving advance review copies (ARCs). Not that it makes or breaks it for me, unless reading becomes unreadable, distracting, or frustrating and in the case of this book, that was not the case. However, I was surprised to learn that this book was actually written in 2016.

The overall story was enjoyable. What could have been improved, in my opinion, was the presentation in using third person omniscient. Many times, the types of murder/cozy mysteries I read are in first person, and the third person in this story was a good way to approach this story because of needing to intertwine the interests of the two main protagonists. It was also good being able to get into the heads of the antagonists too.

With that said, the book seemed to be almost "too busy" with so many different characters, which for me, and in my opinion, made the story hard to follow at times. As a result, it was hard for me to really find the main characters more relatable (three-dimensional); all of the characters seemed to lack depth and seemed pretty flat. I really wanted Anita and Olivia to feel like real people so I could better connect with their plights and journey as they developed through the story. And by the end, when it was time to wrap the story up, there was a brief moment of, "well what happened to Olivia" almost "cliff-hangar."

Unfortunately, the ending seemed quite rushed and was a disappointment, in my opinion. What could have helped, although the length of the book was pretty good, might have been by adding just a little more detail to the characters' emotions (although their motivations were pretty well developed, I believe) and descriptions. The story, at times, jumped around a little too much, and made it harder for me to follow what was happening.

Typically, I will read several books at the same time, and it's important that I can remember the events/characters/circumstances. Luckily, though, the story was still compelling enough that I wanted to find out what happened. Thus, I read this book in only a few days; something, I typically and hardly ever do.

I still would recommend I Was Murdered Last Night to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries/cozy mysteries/ghost stories for the story told!

Cute, fast-paced, and never boring, I enjoyed reading this in spite of the occasional casual, subtle racism and misogyny in the descriptors of the characters.

Almost put the book down when the author described a character's breasts for no reason at all, completely irrelevant to the story. The character was also never mentioned again. Small role.

Also, the ebook badly needs another proofread. I feel like I bought the uncorrected ARC. Random punctuation that doesn't belong, a character called by the wrong name (!!), a whole paragraph out of place about a plot point that never developed. I think someone was supposed to delete the paragraph and instead accidentally hit Ctrl+V in the middle of another sentence without realizing.

Anita died last night in Central Park—murdered, in fact. But her ghost still remained. Her mind was a jumble of confusion and chaos. What did this mean? Odd thing is that she can’t remember anything.

Too analytical and repetitive. The character tends to babble on, going off tangent. It needed to be more directed to the murder (that’s what I wanted to know about.) Instead, she’s talking about Grandma and Fluffy. WTF?! C’mon, get on with it already!

Eventually, we start to relive her last day (good, at least, we’re getting somewhere.) But it doesn’t go anywhere at all. In fact, it goes right back to where we started: nowhere.

I thought I would like this. I expected to like this. But it was just one big, fat disappointment.

Anita's vacation to New York City takes an unexpected turn when she finds her self looking down at her newly murdered body in Central Park. Confused and frustrated by her sudden change of reality she follows Detective Olivia Brown the homicide detective assigned to her case. Her attempts to communicate with Olivia and cope with her new status are heart warming and touched with humor. I have never given much thought to what the afterlife would be like but the author's depiction was interesting. Although I found the writing to be disjointed and uneven in places I was intrigued with the premise and found Olivia and Anita to be engaging characters. This is a new author to me and desoite my reservations I would read another entry in this light paranormal mystery series.

This was a very unusual read. I wasn't sure about the writing style as I found it rather chaotic- having said that I still read all the way to the end as I wanted to know how it turned out.

Definitely interesting! It was pretty good, but I’m not sure if it’s something I would continue with. It was more serious than things I normally read. I’m glad I gave it a try though.
