Fascinating background history of the situation in the Church of Scotland during the days of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and Charles II and the Great Ejection.

This work contains several works collated by 18th Century Reformed minister John Howie which examine: 1) how and why true Presbyterians are in favor of not only the Establishment of the Church, but why the Magistrate is due to support the true religion and both tables of the law (Hugh Binning), 2) Reasons concerning the misguided and incorrect acts of Cromwell in allowing religious toleration (Samuel Rutherford), and 3) The abhorrent actions of the State in throwing out gospel ministers in favor of ineligible and ignorant men (John Brown of Wamphray).

Very good and especially important for students both of Covenanter thought and Scottish church history.
