I am surprised this book is not on the top list of business bestsellers.
The books starts off with the obvious, digitization is disrupting technology businesses. However it then opens up your eyes on the not-so-obvious; digitization is impacting all other businesses as well, but at different speeds.
The digital vortex visualizes the different speed at which these industries are being digitally disrupted (p.18). Take for example Media & Entertainment; this industry is at the heart of the vortex, while Education is a little bit at the outer edge, and the pharmaceuticals at the really outer outer edge. The objective of this specific visualization is to make the bystanders aware that his business - whatever it is- will be effected by the advancement of technology, and he should be prepared for it.
Some genuine and important concepts were presented, such as the value vacancies and value vampires (read the book to know them!). These concepts helped me a lot to look at the industry around me and understand where the threats can come from.
The most important thing presented by the authors was the concept of achieving Business Agility. Three specific concepts were discussed in details; Hyper-awareness, Informed Decision-Making, and Fast Execution. I now have these concepts presented in each and every management meeting as I found them profoundly important concepts for strategy formulation and implementation.
I strongly recommend this book for any business owner. It summarizes a way of looking into business disruption and offers strategic responses to them.
Enjoyed the first couple of pages .. the definitions and whatnots. As I read on it became more of a chore and tedious .. took me 4 months to complete it.
Great read! The frameworks were useful and gives you the ability to think about digital disruption from an incumbents perspective. The book is riddled with fantastic case studies to drive home the key take aways. Looking forward to the follow up research book already.
Simply a great mind-opening book which can well serve as a guide to understand digital transformation as well as implementing and driving it. Well structured, offers very useful and clear frameworks and an endless list of real cases of real digital disruptors.
