I had so much fun writing this book. I can't wait until it's out on the shelves in February!

After I finished writing Book Four, The Three Furies, I wondered how I would be able to top it with the next book. (For those of you who have read the ending of The Three Furies, you know what I mean!) But when Book Five, The Secret of Ashona, took me over - it just seemed to write itself. I was as surprised as you will be! And I so look forward to hearing what you all think of it when it's out!

So it has been a while since I read this book and recently decided on a read through on the series. I haven't bought any new books in a while and decided that since I was restarting the series I would see if there were some new ones, since his adventures are far from over. After searching around a lot I am severely disappointed, Kaza seems to have given up on this series and it seems writing all together. A year ago she commented and said that she was still working on the book, nothing since then, like literally NOTHING, I almost get the feeling if it does come out it will be a few more years and then she won't publish again. The break between these two books has basically ruined her small career since no one wants to read a series that literally takes 5 or more years for each book.

This almost pisses me off because she started a series knowing it would take a while and then gave up on it, leaving thousands, if not more, of fans disappointed. I almost there should be some action taken in the literary world, this is a writer who has us pay for her works, what is the point for a story that never gets an ending. This is different than a series that leaves in a cliff hanger because at least we know it won't be continued. Most readers get emotionally invested in books and this basically leaves me traumatized, especially since she doesn't even comment on it, she basically just disappeared. I get that it seems like she might be scared of facing the public because she abandoned her fans but she should at least do something about it, she basically took our money and ran.

This story needs serious revision and editing. Kingsley spends
too much time on irrelevant things and does not resolve conflicts
or questions.
The ending is very disappointing.

Erec has hardly had a chance to recover from his last quest when life starts getting crazy again. Unsurprisingly, it seems the Furies still have his soul, and those without souls are claimed by Tarvos of the Underworld for his golem army. And getting his soul back will be no easy matter, for his is one of the three thousand souls keeping the Furies out of Tartarus . . .

After such an incredible ride last book, I found myself putting this one down several times out of sheer frustration. Erec has done so much for the Furies, and at such personal cost, that he's the only one they'll even talk to without destroying---and he spends most of the book trying to plot out a way to put them back into the prison he died to get them out of. It wasn't a lot of fun watching him scheme to take advantage of their trust in him. It is, frankly, rather unbelievable they take everything as well as they do, considering.

It was also rather galling how easily Erec decides to drop virtue in favor of being evil just because a quest seems to demand it. This is partially evident with Baskania, and more clear when Erec decides to do a few dastardly deeds to ride a horse that will only let evil people mount, if that's what it will take to get a ride.

Thankfully, things do turn around. And there were definitely highlights. Erec manages to die (again) and have all sorts of adventures as a ghost. And there is a certain twisted charm to watching his caper with Baskania, and how the two of them scheme in close quarters. Rosco's lucky he never made it to the Underworld, though, or Baskania would've definitely known what's up.

The stakes jumped a lot in this book, too, so it will be interesting to see where the series goes from here. Baskania seems poised to take over most of the world, and if he chooses to leave the Otherness for later, could easily do it in short order. Erec gets an insider's view on much of Baskania's operations, which makes his eventual kingship look rather hopeless, even if the Amulet of Virtues and his scepter will give him a lot of power. It's one thing to reverse Baskania's deliberate brainwashing, but at this point the kingdom he's going to rule doesn't like him at all.

For fans of the series, this is a definite read; for newcomers, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. But I do hope the next book doesn't feel like Erec again regressed all the character development he'd gained at such cost in The Three Furies. I rate this book Recommended.

I am excited for the Erec Rex series to end (although there are still 3 more books). The overall story is interesting and Erec is likeable, but I am most excited to see how everything resolves itself. One of the biggest downsides to this series is how slowly the mysteries are unveiled. Where are Erec's siblings?! How on Earth are they going to ever do their quests to become king/queen if they only get to start after Erec is finished (or if sooner, he will at least have a huge head start)? What is going on with Erec's mother?

This book specifically was fairly good. Kingsley broke up the pattern of get a quest, do the quest a little bit, but in doing so, the book was a jumble of incidents that only came together every so often. The reintroduction of Spartacus worked fairly well, but it was clearly an excuse to ignore the long travel between places and events. Clever, but not cleverly concealed. But at least better than adding another few hundred pages to the book. Overall, this was a good enough book to justify reading it. Now if only there were some news about the next installment... I just hope this series doesn't get canceled early. I seem to be one of very few people still reading it.

Kaza reports that this book seemed to take over and write itself. I fully agree with her assessment. I picked up the Kindle editing and read it in one sitting. In the story, Erec is again challenged like nothing before. His quests are becoming more dangerous, not only to himself, but to his friends. I won't provide any spoilers, but the first quest occupies much of the book, with the second coming quickly, but no less dangerous, in the last few chapters. By now, it is clear that Erec has the potential to become the next King of Alypium, but must go on twelve very challenging quests and resolve them before he will be able to take over the realm from someone Bethany adores. Again, Bethany, Erec, his friends, and the Kingdoms are in peril and Erec's quests help him save almost all of them.
This book is the first of the series to bring out an emotional response from me. Before, while I thoroughly enjoyed and felt like I was there with Erec and his friends, this time, there was an emotional response -- twice (both toward the end of the story), and that is unusual when I read stories for the first time. Kaza topped herself in this one.

Wow, that was fun. Kingsley has really out done herself. Everything flowed together perfectly and every little detail had a purpose. Every thing came together like clockwork, it was kind of beautiful. However there are a few reasons I only gave it 4 stars.
Although it had a definite place in the plot, Erec's SECOND death seemed a bit over-board. During the section of the book where Erec was a ghost, I didn't really care for him as much as I had before. Him dying twice almost seemed ridiculous.
The other thing-as others pointed out- was the issue with some of the characters. Bethany lost her luster a little bit. She became a sort of damsel in distress/ helpless- girl -friend type of figure. I missed her stubbornness. I also missed the presence of Jam who is one of my favorite characters in the book. Spartacus was basically just a plot device and after a while he started to get annoying.
Besides those two things, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. At the beginning of the last quest things got epic. Those last few chapters were a blast, and the last few pages were adorable. Everything really came together and I can't wait for the next book!

LOVEE THE BOOK!
I liked how Erec was on Baskania's side in this book. It kind of showed the book at a different angle.
The cover is wrong!!!! Erec has a Justin Bieber haircut on the cover!!! His hair is supposed to have curly hair. And Bethany's hair is supposed to be brown!!!!
I didn't like how Erec started to view things from Baskania's perspective when he was pretending to work for Baskania. It upset me that Erec began to call him the Shadow Prince.
I loved Spartacus Kilroy! His personality was so funny! However, he was never like that in the previous books. It's like his personality completely changed when he turned into a ghost....
All in all, this was a great book! :)

While this may not have been intended to be the finale (it certainly reads as Book 5 of 7ish), I would have been sorely tempted to abandon the series anyway after this book, so maybe let’s just call the series “put out of its misery” rather than unfinished.

Kingsley really seems to have written herself into a corner. Basically, Erec is so vastly overpowered at this point, that there’s really no good way to make a conflict. He has more magical doodads than he knows what to do with; he has a zillion magical abilities; he even has omnipotent Furies willing to do anything for him to the point he can’t think of what magical abilities or gifts he’d want. Far more experienced writers than Kingsley would struggle with such an overpowered hero; this makes for a book with zero stakes.

This book is also repetitive as hell. Erec sees a future where bad things happen, angsts about it, has no recognition that those visions can be (read: always are) misleading. Yet more crucial missing people turn out to be among June’s brood of children.

Also, Bethany is relegated to being a damsel worrying about Erec at home while he goes on quests – what the hell happened to her being a fellow adventurer and companion? In fact, Erec is alone (or with his sidekick Spartacus) for most of the book, which seems an odd choice to take when Kingsley has developed a large supporting cast./

Basically, I hoped that the Erec Rex series would be elevated as it progressed. With the exception of the very good fourth book, its quality has slowly declined instead. For the series as a whole, I think it’s an okay MG fantasy read, but I can’t really think of something to recommend it over any number of better books in the genre.

This series has really been a pretty big disappointment. I thought it started out okay but it just hasn't grown the way it should. There was definitely too much time between this book and the last and that is part of the problem. This whole book felt rushed. I think she really tried to have Erec do too much. The characters really don't have a chance to develop fully and anytime Erec has a problem there is conveniently some new person, device, etc. that can solve his problems. Having an invisible ghost friend who can pretty much do anything was WAY too convenient and made the whole book hokey. I'm just not buying the amount of tasks she had him completing in such a short amount of time. And there aren't enough real connections being made between characters in the book for me to care much about any of the them, including Erec.

Even after 5 books, I still love how Kaza Kingsley uses Erec's visions of the future to create doubt in his mind just to have it work out completely differently than he thinks. This book is well paced with several nice surprise twists and an ending that no fan would complain about. Can't wait till the next one.

Another great addition to this wonderful series. It was very entertaining, and you find out more stuff about Erec's past. There was, however, a lot of Erec on his own, without Bethany or Jack, or even Jam.

Okay...this was another book I had a long time finishing. Not because the story was dragging and boring but because I got too busy. 😅

Anyway, compared to the previous book, this book was actually great. It had all the right elements to make it an interesting read. It had several plot twists. I think a lot were revealed here. And this book showcased Erec’s growth. He was more mature and understanding of the way things are.

I would have given this book 5-stars. But the ending was rushed. There was no climax. The scene that would have been the book’s climax did not cut it for me. And even though some questions were answered in this book, a whole bunch of questions appeared. The ending felt far from satisfying. It left too many unanswered questions. I don’t know if Kaza Kingsley did it that way on purpose or if she had a new series planned. But this fifth book did not probide a satisfying ending to the series. 😔😔😔

It took me a really long time to finish this one. I know she never wrote any more of the series, and I didn't want to end it with a cliffhanger. I'm pleasantly surprised to feel like I can live with it ending like it did. But I'll always want to know what happened next. I still feel melancholy though.

Technically, I would rate this book 4.5 stars, but since this is one of my favorite series, I rounded it up. It was pretty good, not going to lie. But of course, I had a few nit picky comments to make against it, which explains the 0.5 stars missing. I'm really picky, sorry, but that's just the way it works.

First of all, I have to address the Spartacus issue. Don't get me wrong, I liked him since he first showed up after the first book. But in this book, he was around so much that he drowned out the other characters, I think. I mean, the whole book, it was just Rosco and Spartacus and Erec. And all of the other favorite characters I had in the book were kind of pushed aside, and only took up a slight part of the book. It seemed like everything Erec did was something Spartacus was involved in, and it seemed like nothing Erec did was ever his own task. Even at the end, when he makes a major choice, Spartacus was there, and to me, after a few hundred pages, I would have liked at least a little more character change.

Another thing that really bothered me was the whole family. And I'm not talking about the identity of Bethany's brother--I had guessed that since the second book when they described him. I mean, the last time they held back information about Erec's family, the castle in Alypium ended up crumbling to the ground. . I don't know, that just kind of bothered me.

And finally, the last thing that kind of got to me. I am all for a strong female heroine. I love it when girls prove to the hero that they are just as capable at saving the world as boys. In the third book, Bethany had one of those moments, and it was one of the best moments int he entire series for me because it really solidified Bethany's rank in the quests, and how she was just as capable as Erec. Erec tried to trick Bethany into telling the Hermit to take her back to safety, but she stayed anyways, ignoring the fact that it was dangerous.

Like I said before, these are just the little details that really bothered me, even though they probably didn't bother a lot of people. I'm really picky, and it's an old habit I should probably break. Either way, that's the way it is, and I can't wait until the next one comes out!

This is Kaza kingsley's fifth book in her series. I believe this is a good series to enjoy but not a razzle dazzle book. I still loved it and can't wait for the next one. However, being yanked out of his with out his best friend, Bethany, isn't enough. He has to have challenges like nothing before. His life has become more and more dangerous also to his friends and family as well.

It's about Eric Rex and he finds him self in these strange land that aren't so new any more. Erec has to become the next King of Alypium to save these lands, but must go on twelve very challenging quests and resolve them before he will be able to take back control the realm from someone evil, Baskania.Erec also gets these visions of the future from his dragon eyes and the visions create doubt in his mind. Ironically these visions works out completely differently than he thinks. In the book there are two quests Eric goes on, one taking most of the book second was no less dangerous with him almost losing some one he loves dearly. Things go from bad to worst when Erec starts to view things from Baskania's perspective and in a positive. Will he change, is he becoming the new Baskania, what are these quests? Find out in "The Secret of Ashona"

I really did like this edition to the Erec Rex series. In my opinion, it is the best so far. It was definitely full of action--you won't be bored reading this one. However, the downfall to that was that there was so much going on, I sometimes had trouble keeping track of everything. As soon as one task was finished, Erec was zooming on to the next thing on his list. I also would have liked to see more character development--there was a lot of Erec dealing with the same problems and doubts throughout the whole book. I did love how Erec's visions of the future always turned out in the way you wouldn't expect.
There were some small, unimportant things that irked me, like how Tarvos was a giant bull, but his horns somehow fit in Erec's pockets....I know, it's stupid, but it bothered me. :)
I do wish the author would kind of explain more how Upper Earth and the Kingdoms of the Keepers tie in together; like how Baskania is an evil magical guy, but he is also a billionaire owner of megacorporations in Upper Earth.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it if you have read the first four!

I thought the book met my expectations but just barely. The way the visions came true was clever but I didn't quite approve of the character changes that were shown in Erec. He seemed to me to have better judgement in previous books and this seemed to decline in The Secret of Ashona. This would have been fine if the reason had been implicit which could have been one of many outlined in the book but one wasn't focused on enough to account for this change.
