Engaging, edifying, educational

I don't recall reading this before, and I'm humbled to have had the opportunity. Reading this manual in conjunction with the Book of Mormon has deepened my testimony of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. It has strengthened my relationship with my Heavenly Father and His son, Jesus Christ.
I found clarification and enthusiasm for chapters that previously left me confused or just went over my head.
I highly recommend this book. In fact, I exhort you to read it, and see if you aren't enlightened as well.

"We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God." ~ 8th Article of Faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

"The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel.

The book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation. Their words, written on gold plates, were quoted and abridged by a prophet-historian named Mormon. The record gives an account of two great civilizations. One came from Jerusalem in 600 B.C. and afterward separated into two nations, known as the Nephites and the Lamanites. The other came much earlier when the Lord confounded the tongues at the Tower of Babel. This group is known as the Jaredites. After thousands of years, all were destroyed except the Lamanites, and they are among the ancestors of the American Indians.

The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ among the Nephites soon after His resurrection. It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come.

After Mormon completed his writings, he delivered the account to his son Moroni, who added a few words of his own and hid up the plates in the Hill Cumorah. On September 21, 1823, the same Moroni, then a glorified, resurrected being, appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and instructed him relative to the ancient record and its destined translation into the English language.

In due course the plates were delivered to Joseph Smith, who translated them by the gift and power of God. The record is now published in many languages as a new and additional witness that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that all who will come unto Him and obey the laws and ordinances of His gospel may be saved.

Concerning this record the Prophet Joseph Smith said: “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” ~ Introduction to the Book of Mormon

This study guide was amazing. It's so packed with good information. It has commentary on every chapter in the Book of Mormon. It shares insights from General Authorities on every topic in the Book of Mormon.

There is so much information here, it helped me gain an even deeper understanding of the Book of Mormon. It was awesome to read this as a companion to my Book of Mormon reading. I think everyone should read this through at least once as they study the Book of Mormon.

1 Nephi 18:9
"The word rude refers to being harsh, vulgar, or coarse. The Lord has stated that he approves if proper dancing and singing (D&C 136: 28 and Psalm 149: 1-4). We may praise the Lord through dancing or singing. Satan can use dancing or music, however, as a means of corruption and loss of the spirit. This is why church leaders caution us about the kinds of music we listen to and how we dance."

2 Nephi 2:11
"Without the existence of choices, without our freedom to choose and without opposition, there would be no real existence. This is so much like Lehi's metaphor of how, in the absence of agency and opposites, things would have resulted in a meaningless, undifferentiated 'compound in one.' In such a situation the earth would actually have 'no purpose in the end of its creation.' It is a fact that we can neither grow spiritually nor thereby be truly happy unless and until we make wise use of our moral agency. " -Elder Neal A. Maxwell

Alma 7:12 Jeffery R. Holland clarified to succor means:
"It means literally 'to run to.' What a magnificent way to describe the Savior's urgent effort in our behalf. "

I skimmed this because it was the closest thing that I could find on Google Play to a free ebook version of the BoM. It's a study guide aimed at younger audiences that, while it gives some interesting background, it doesn't critically cover the entire text (nor does it reprint it all) and is meant for indoctrination.

I've found that, if you want the BoM text only, there's a decent free version on Kindle that seems to be unofficial. For explanation and criticism, The Skeptic's Annotated BoM is available for free on the web. I'm amazed that no official free ebook of the text exists, although a web version is available through a LDS website.

This is the textbook for a two semester class. I opted to read it over the course of a year in parallel with Sunday School study. Since church attendance is limited, there was no longer a need to slow down my reading.

I really enjoy reading books in electronic form:
- It is easy to highlight, change highlights and review highlights
- It is easy to add annotations (they are not limited by the size of the margins)
- It is easy to follow links already built into the text. If the text doesn't have them, it's easy to add links.

Reading this allowed me to read what people (more famous them me) thought about various passages in the Book of Mormon, and rejoice in rereading famous quotations.

Good companion to The Book of Mormon. It is mostly full of quotes. Some of the quotes made me think more than others. For me, who's studied The Book of Mormon several times, this didn't provide that much new material. Still, it was a great companion book to read as I studied the scriptures.

I actually can't remember when I started using this manual as a companion to my personal "slow" study of The Book of Mormon, but it was a long while ago. I have paused several times during my course of study to read other LDS publications, such as several of the Teachings of the Prophets series. I completed using this manual for the first time on 8-16-17.

This book is an amazing companion to a deep study of The Book of Mormon. There are many quotes from prophets and general authorities that help the reader gain a deeper understanding of the concepts being taught in different sections and verses. There are numerous explanations, as well as cross references, maps, and charts. There are questions at the end of each chapter that encourage contemplation of what had been read, as well as internalizing the concepts taught. I found many of the suggested assignments good for personal challenges as well.

I plan to go back through this manual again and revisit the many pages and suggestions I flagged as personally applicable for my spiritual development.

I had read this book many years ago, before the current revisions had been added. I had previously found it a wonderful reference and help in understanding the Book of Mormon. I feel the current version does an even better job of this. The current version includes updated quotes from the apostles, that add layers of meaning to the Book of Mormon as applied in our day. I noticed a trend for some of the quotes to come from certain sources, and I will now be moving to those sources to glean from them what I can. If you have not made the Student Manual a part of your Book of Mormon study in the past, I highly recommend you do so now. It helps combine what we have been given anciently, with what we have been given thru modern prophets and apostles.

My wife and I have been reading this book along with our Book of Mormon study. It is full of great insights to the Book of Mormon from different General Authorities. Adding this to your Book of Mormon study will help you gain a greater knowledge of the teaching found in the Book of Mormon and will also help strengthen your testimony. This book has changed since I took Book of Mormon class in institute and is now thicker and has more information. This is a great instrument to enhance lessons or talks.

I read this as a study guide as I read the Book of Mormon. It took me a while because I essentially had to read twice as much every night, and there were far too many nights when I didn't feel like reading that much. But I did finish them both and I definately learned more than if I had just read the Book of Mormon all by itself again. There is no doubt that this is an inspired piece of work. I'm really glad I have it on my shelf.

This Book of Mormon student manual is such a huge improvement over the previous edition! It is filled with wonderful quotations from modern prophets and apostles, as well as insights into Book of Mormon culture and geography. It added a lot to my study of the keystone scripture of my religion this time through.

I read this student manual along with my Book of Mormon studying these past few months. I can't remember if this manual is mine from my BYU religion course days or if it's my husband's...regardless, I really enjoyed having this manual as a study companion to the Book of Mormon
