Blue Dog Man

"There's just something about that dog . . ." Until now, little else could be said about George Rodrigue's mysterious, wildly popular icon. Finally, in his own words, the Blue Dog Man speaks out, shedding light on his creation-going beyond the story of Blue Dog's early incarnation to describe in rich detail both the dog's storied Cajun roots and its brilliant, pop-infused universe of today. Blue Dog has become a touchstone of contemporary American culture, winning accolades from U.S. presidents, Hollywood stars, and ordinary people alike. Woven into this iconic character are the skeins of Cajun history-and, more specifically, the dreams, fears, and passions of its creator. Blue Dog Man takes readers on an unprecedented narrated journey to the heart of a new Blue Dog generation, tracing the evolution of the Blue Dog from its origins in Louisiana legends to its myriad forays into the dazzling, multichrome modern world. Along the way, Rodrigue reflects on everything from Christianity and the afterlife to Renaissance painting, to Jackson Pollock to Andy Warhol and MTV.

“Blue Dog Man is an art book, tracing the genius of Rodrigue's decade-long Blue Dog images. There's just something about that dog...” Blue Dog has become a touchstone of contemporary American culture. This edition of 70 brilliant paintings takes us on a journey into the heart of the Blue Dog generation. Tracing the evolution of Blue Dog from its origins in Louisiana legends to its forays into the modern world, artist George Rodrigue reflects on everything from Christianity and the afterlife to Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and mass media. A wonderful book even if you are not a fan of Rodrigue.

We received this some years ago as a gift. I’m finally working my way through stacks of gift books that over the years someone else thought I’d like. Or maybe books they thought would be good for me. At any rate, I’d heard of Blue Dog but don’t own any of the art and don’t want any. The surprise with this book was the content. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the artist’s cultural heritage, growth as an artist, his perspective, muse and more. It’s not an inexpensive book but perhaps your library has it. If you enjoy art and talking to artists, read this one. I’ll be passing it on to the person who gave it to us to also enjoy.

I bought this book as an impulse buy from my favorite used bookstore. I thought the cover was cool (the dog is made of felt), and I had fond memories of seeing Blue Dog everywhere during a past trip to New Orleans. This book provides an interesting look into the artist’s journey. It showcases how someone’s passion for their work can lead to great success, as Blue Dog has made her way into homes and offices around the world.

I choose the dog over the Blue Dog Man. That'll give you enough good blues. Rip up the cover, for it's good to use as a coaster. Want it? Boo-hoo. That was a mistake.
